Cleveland Way

The Cleveland Way follows a route of great contrasts through the high, remote moorland of the North York

Moors and the spectacular coastline of North Yorkshire. This 110 mile route was the second national trail to be

established and remains one of the best.

From Helmsley to Saltburn-by-the-Sea, the route traverses classic moorland scenery, through forests and

along escarpments, with panoramic views over the Cleveland Hills and the heather clad North York Moors. At

Saltburn-by-the-Sea everything changes, as you follow the route along some of highest sea cliffs in the country,

dropping down to historic fishing villages, bustling seaside towns, and beautiful beaches.

RouteHelmsley - Osmotherley - Along the eastern edge of the moors ThefirstsectionoftheClevelandWayprovidesaneasywoodlandwalkacrossthebeautifullandscapeoftheRyeValley,passingtheruinsofHelmsleyCastleandthemedievalRievaulxAbbey.ThewalkthenrisesgentlytotheflatlimestoneplateauxoftheTabularHills.ItisalsoworthallowingtimetovisittheKilburnWhiteHorse,justbeforeSuttonBank.FromSuttonBankthewalkfollowsthewesternedgeoftheHambletonHills,overlookingtheValeofYork.TheviewsfromSuttonBankarebreathtaking.Followingolddrovers’roads,theroutepassestheidyllicsettingofOakdale’s

reservoirs,enroutetoOsmotherley.

Osmotherley - Kildale: Across the top of the North York Moors Thisisthemoststrenuoussectionofthetrail,asthetrailfollowsthenorthernescarpmentofthemoors,brokenbyaseriesofvalleyscuttingintotheuplands.TheviewsarestunningoverthecoastalplaintotheNorthandacrossthebleakmoorlandanddeepvalleystotheSouth.AfterClayBankTopasteepclimbleadsuptoRoundHill,thehighestpointontheroute,wheremoremagnificentviewscanbeenjoyed.TheroutethendescendsgraduallytoKildale,studdedwithsignsofthepast-waymarkers,boundarystonesandburialmounds.

Kildale - Saltburn-by-the-Sea: Roseberry Topping and on to the Sea ThefirstpartofthewalkisdominatedbyanascentofEasbyMoor,toCaptainCook’sMonument,andthentheiconicRoseberryTopping.Althoughonly1000ft(300m)high,thisdistinctiveconicalhillisprominentinthelandscape.Fromthetoptheviewsareexcellent.Gentlerfarmland,woodlandandariversidepathleadontothecoastatSaltburn-by-the-Sea.

windsweptbeaches.FromSaltburntherouteheadsalongasectionofdramaticcliffstothehighestpointontheeastcoastofEnglandatRockCliff.ThisroutetakesyoudowntosealevelonthreeoccasionsandthroughtheprettyvillagesofStaithesandRunswickBay,endingatthefishingvillageofSandsend.Cliffpaths,orifthetide’sout,severalmilesalongthebeach,leadontoWhitby,withitsfineharbour,fossilfilledcliffsandoldtown.AvisitmustbemadetotheimposingremainsofWhitbyAbbeyhighabovethetown.WhitbyandRobinHood’sBayareseparatedbyaneasyclifftopwalkwithgreatviewsalongthecoastlineandovertheNorthSea.
