DAYTON, Ohio -- About 150 people from an international organization dedicated to peace,
human rights and honoring the Earth will speak briefly at the University of Dayton on Friday, April
10, from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Kennedy Union ballroom. The event is free and open to the public.
The speakers, from the organization Walk Across America, began a walk in New York City on
Jan. 31 and will complete the cross-country trek by arriving at the Nevada nuclear test site on Oct.
12, the Columbus Day quincentennial.
"The walk is designed to counter all the Columbus Day hoopla," said Mary Effler, Walk Across
America Ohio coordinator. "It is a learning trip, to bring issues out to the people and to show
solidarity with the native Americans."
Issues to be discussed at the UD session include environmental degradation, nuclear testing and
the suppression of the rights of indigenous peoples. "Since they are an international group, they will
bring different perspectives of why we need to change our policies," said Sister Nancy Bramlage,
S.C., coordinator of UD's campus ministry social concerns office.
The walkers wlll arrive at UD Friday afternoon and will stay overnight in the Frericks Athletic
and Convocation Center before moving on to EG&G Mound Laboratories in Miamisburg on
Saturday.
The event is sponsored by campus ministry, the University Activities Organization, and EARTH,
a UD environmental awareness organization.
