Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League’s Pup-Up Adoption Shop at CityPlace features Adoptable Animals and…

In an effort to find loving homes for animals from Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League, CityPlace

and Peggy Adams teamed up in December to present the PUP-UP ADOPTION SHOP - a satellite operation of Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League. Adoptable dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens are available in hopes that families would adopt a pet during the holiday season and into the New Year. The PUP-UP ADOPTION SHOP officially opened Saturday, December 16, 2017 and is located next to H&M on Rosemary Avenue in West Palm Beach. The shop will remain open until the end of March. In addition to pets on site, the store also includes a variety of pet care items and toys for sale with proceeds benefiting the League.

Peggy Adams also holds 2 sessions of Kitten Yoga on select Saturdays, allowing participants to relax their mind and body as the kittens provided a stress free environment. All one needed to bring was a yoga mat and we supplied the kittens.

Rich Anderson, Executive Director/CEO of Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League said, “We are so pleased our CityPlace partnership is growing. It makes perfect sense to be in the heart of downtown West Palm Beach during season and it compliments our upcoming Walk for the Animals at CityPlace this March.” Anderson continued with, “We are very grateful to CityPlace and Related Group of Florida for making this long-time goal of ours a reality by donating this amazing space.”

Launched in 2014, Countdown 2 Zero is a public-private partnership between Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League, Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control, and the Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners. Its goal is to ensure that all adoptable animals in Palm Beach County are being saved by the year 2024.

Saving Palm Beach County’s Most At-Risk Animals.

As part of our Countdown 2 Zero efforts, Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League regularly transfers animals from Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control into our care – a total of 497 cats and 763 dogs in 2017. Often, these are animals with medical problems that require the kind of special care the county-run shelter can’t afford to provide. We want you to meet some of these wonderful, loving animals that you have helped save through your kind and generous support of Peggy Adams.

Meet BJOn January 18, 2017, BJ probably thought he was going for his routine walk with his owner’s granddaughter when she picked him up and headed out the front door. Little did he know that his life would drastically change that day, as the people he had trusted all his life would decide to do the unthinkable.

BJ was a little more than a mile away from the safety of his home when he found himself laying 30 feet below the Blue Heron Bridge. He had been thrown from the structure by the same person who he thought was simply taking him for a walk.

Witnesses said they heard BJ crying out in pain after the fall. He struggled to move, but collapsed from his injuries. A lifeguard heard the crying and came to his aid. Remarkably, BJ sustained only minor bruising and physical scars, but his mental scars are surely deeper.

In March, Animal Care and Control was awarded custody of BJ and this sweet dog was transferred to Peggy Adams and adopted one month later.

Meet Tucker On November 2, 2017, we received a call from Animal Care & Control about a special needs dog that had been hit by a car.Tucker, a two-year old male pit bull mix, had visual wounds to his front and back legs. When he arrived at the League, his front leg had 10 staples and his back left leg was bandaged. Tucker

also had abrasions which left him hairless on the top of his head and face.

He was given medication for the pain and had to be sedated so that Peggy Adams’ Dr. Coates could assess his injuries. She determined that his right front leg wound was down to the muscle, with some tendons exposed. His back left leg also had wounds through the skin.

The decision was made to have Tucker’s injuries evaluated by Dr. Latimer at Jupiter Pet Emergency and Specialty Center. While there, he was diagnosed with multiple fractures of the left front leg and pins were surgically inserted to help stabilize the bones. Tucker was adopted on January 8, 2018.

Walk with Peggy at our NEW Location

Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League is excited to announce that the 17th Annual Barry Crown

Walk for the Animals will take place on Saturday, March 10, 2018, at CityPlace (NEW Walk location) located at 700 S. Rosemary Avenue, West Palm Beach, Florida.

This pet-friendly walk begins at 9am with check-in and registration, live entertainment and a free breakfast. At 10:15am, after opening ceremonies, participants will enjoy a scenic walk beginning and ending near the Cheesecake Factory. The walk will be led by Smokey, a very special adopted alumni dog who has a heart-warming story.

As participants complete the route, they'll enjoy pet costume contests with amazing prize baskets at center stage. Categories include Best Dressed, Most Creative, Owner/Pet Look-A-Like and Best In Show. There will also be live entertainment, local vendors, and a fabulous silent auction and raffle area with great prizes. The event concludes at noon.

Participants are encouraged to pre-register to walk and form teams. Each registrant who raises at least $35 will receive a free t-shirt, a special gift for their pet and earn amazing incentives.

"Our Walk for the Animals has grown tremendously over the years and we are very excited to have CityPlace as the host for this year’s Walk," said Rich Anderson, Executive Director/CEO of Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League. "As a nonprofit that receives no city, state or federal government funding, Peggy Adams relies on community support to help us provide services to more than 45,000 dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens every year. Peggy Adams to offer FREE Domestic and Community Cat Spay/Neuter in 2018 to ALL Palm Beach County Zip Codes!

Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League is excited to announce that we have recently received a

$200,000 grant from PetSmart Charities™. This grant will provide free spay/neuter, vaccines and microchips to 4,000 domestic and free-roaming cats in Palm Beach County for one-year beginning January 1, 2018. Zip codes covered by the PetSmart grant are in the top ten highest intake areas: 33404, 33405, 33409, 33411, 33415, 33460, 33461, 33462, 33463 and 33470. All other Palm Beach County zip codes will be covered by additional grants and/or funding from other sources, including Palm Beach County.

All cats residing in Palm Beach County are eligible for these free services, including free-roaming cats receiving Trap-Neuter-Vaccine-Return (TNVR) services and domestic cats scheduled for surgery via the PeggyAdams.org website.

"We are extremely grateful for this generous funding from PetSmart Charities™ in support of our Countdown 2 Zero initiative to save the lives of animals here in Palm Beach County," said Rich Anderson, Executive Director/CEO of Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League. “Combating over-population is a big goal to work towards, but thanks to PetSmart Charities™, we will significantly reduce the problem of homeless and neglected cats in Palm Beach County."

Domestic cat surgeries can be scheduled online at PeggyAdams.org. Community cats can be brought for TNVR in traps and are accepted on a walk-in basis Monday through Friday from 8am-9am, with additional hours Wednesday from 1-6pm. Peggy Adams also offers a free trapping class the last Sunday of each month. Peggy Adams provides services to over 45,000 dogs and cats each year and this new grant reinforces the organization’s mission to create a community where

100% of adoptable animals have a chance for a lifelong, loving home.

The organization’s veterinary clinic at the Grace Pavilion successfully performed more than 14,000 surgeries in 2017. In addition, the clinic helped trap, neuter, vaccinate and return (TNVR) 30,994 community cats to their colonies since the group’s TNVR program started in 2010.

“Sandi’s Holiday Tail” Featured Cats & Dogs to Find

Homes for the Holidays!OVER 170,000 VISITORS MEET DUKE – THE 12' TALL, 50 TON SAND RESCUE DOG

Sandi, the world’s ONLY 600-ton sand tree, was back along the West Palm Beach Waterfront with

quite the holiday “tail” to tell! A beloved South Florida holiday tradition, her fans eagerly anticipated her 35 feet of sand sculpted perfection and the fun-filled kingdom of Sandi Land. Sandi’s dazzling 2017 debut at the November 30th Clematis by Night Tree Lighting, featured a new component and Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League couldn’t be happier!

During the holiday tree lighting, Sandi revealed a big, new personality, and the next chapter in her story, “Sandi’s Holiday Tail.” Since returning to her West Palm Beach home, Sandi had fallen in love and added a Peggy Adams Rescue Dog to her family named Duke! This 12-foot-high, 50-ton sand sculpture was revealed to the delight of the thousands in attendance. Duke sat next to Sandi, keeping a watchful eye on her

all month long; proudly wearing his Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League ADOPT ME vest with our logo sculpted beautifully into the sand.

All of Sandi Land was pet themed with dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens throughout the entire Downtown Waterfront through December, along with messaging about the importance of spay/neutering pets and saving the lives of adoptable animals. Rich Anderson, Executive Director/CEO of Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League said, “We are thrilled we were chosen to partner with the City of West Palm Beach on this annual holiday tradition. We love the message the City and Sandi promoted – Adopt, Don’t Shop for Pets – it fit perfectly with the League’s Mission.” Anderson continued with, “This added exposure helped many area shelter pets find their forever family during the holidays.”

The Loss of a Beloved Pet... A Veterinarian's Perspective

One of the hardest jobs as a veterinarian is to be involved in

the end of life process. It is not easy… it will never be easy… and it is always taken very seriously.

Practically every day, I'm involved with a decision related to humane euthanasia. I took an oath to do no harm and to end all suffering.

Over the years, I somehow learned how to put euthanasia in a special place. I am confident that the decision to end the suffering of an animal is the best thing we can do for the pet, (even when it is often the hardest thing for the owner).

But when this experience came home for me, all that professional detachment became moot. I was a mom losing her child, and not a doctor in a white coat. While I have always respected and cared for people needing to alleviate their animals’ suffering, I now have empathy and an understanding that are deeply personal.

My Great Dane, named Boomer, walked into the shelter and right into my life in March of 2014. This breed, like all giant breeds, typically has a shortened lifespan, and this big guy had a mild abnormality that put him at further risk. Despite this, I chose to take him home with me. I told my son that we might have him for six days, six weeks, six months or six years, but we were going to give him the best home we could.

I was so naïve. While I was prepping my son for the possibility of the inevitable, I never in my heart or thoughts considered my own feelings. Then again, why would I? I've been a practicing veterinarian for 15+ years and I deal with death all the time. Heck!!! I consistently help people with their grief and the loss of their animals.

Reality check: September 2017, Hurricane Irma came to town. I packed my things and grabbed my crew to stay at the shelter. Boomer was with me, but seemed not quite right. He was losing weight and wasn't eating. With all my knowledge and experience, I couldn't turn him around. I tried to feed him everything; the best dog food, the not-so-best dog food… even raw dog

food. Nothing improved, nothing was working. I tried IV fluids, concoctions, formulas, and medications. Yet, I failed.

That day, I looked in his eyes and I knew the end was coming. The question I’ve been asked more times that I can count is, “When, do I intervene? When is the right time?” …Now, I sat on the other side and just felt lost and helpless. Boomer picked his head up and looked right at me. I ran to his bed, he nuzzled his head in my lap and... all at once… he left me! The pain was gut-wrenching and the tears flowed. This was serious pain – the pain of a loss that I never experienced before. This felt as wrenching as a human death must feel. He was, even in that short time, our family.

Our four-legged children ask for nothing. Just love, companionship, food, water and a place to lay their head.

I'm comforted in knowing that my son and I gave all this to our Boomer, but the hole in my heart that I have, I never imagined would be so big. I feel like it might never heal.

I couldn't save my boy. I'm a trained professional and there was nothing I could do. I cannot adequately express my love for this four-legged, 135 pound walking heart. He saved me when I didn't even know I needed to be saved. He opened my heart when he walked into my office and allowed me to hold his head as he took his last breath.

The Palm Beach County Tax Collector's Office (TCO) employees wrapped up its Paws for Claus

drive on December 4, 2017 when they delivered food, blankets, toys and other pet supplies to Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League. The supplies were collected at each TCO office during the month of November. Volunteers and staff at Peggy Adams were overwhelmed with joy and gratitude for the much needed supplies.

Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League relies solely on contributions from supporters therefore we are incredibly grateful to the Tax Collector's Office and other companies that collected donations during the holiday season. Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League's 46th Annual Christmas Ball on December 7th at the Sailfish

Club in Palm Beach was, once again, a sold-out event! This elegant, black-tie, holiday affair supports the mission of saving the lives of homeless, neglected and injured dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens. Pauline Pitt, a dedicated League supporter and board member, enthusiastically served as Chairwoman.

This enchanting evening, filled with holiday lights, garlands, festive Christmas trees and decorations, opened with a receiving line of adorable, adoptable pets on the red carpet greeting guests with tails a-wagging. Guests enjoyed cocktails, dinner and live entertainment, and also viewed renderings of Peggy Adams Animal Rescue Leagues’ highly anticipated campus expansion. Later in the evening, the dogs and cats paraded through the party in order for the guests

to get a second look. This parade of precious pets resulted in a few furry friends finding their new loving forever homes!

“We are very grateful for the support of so many who help the animals at Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League,” said Rich Anderson, Executive Director/CEO of Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League. “Our guests at the Christmas Ball are speaking for those without a voice and there's nothing more special than that during the holiday season."

Rolf Posselt (1929-2017) has been described as a "beloved friend to many." One of those friends,

Michael Jauquet, visited Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League recently and reflected on Mr. Posselt's life. He said, "I know he loved all animals, especially dogs. He was a kind soul, offering wit and wisdom to all his friends. He is and will continue to be missed." Rolf Posselt became a Forever Friend of Peggy Adams. Frankie and Irwin F. Edenzon welcomed more than 40 supporters and volunteers of Peggy Adams Animal

Rescue League to a reception on January 23, 2018 at their Palm Beach Gardens home. Palm Beach Gardens boasts a rapidly-growing number of friends committed to Peggy Adams and a strong nucleus of support for our Promise to the Animals of Humane Care, Quality of Life, Life-Long Loving Homes, and Spay/Neuter to Control Overpopulation.

“No one has been more loyal to our program than Frankie and Irwin Edenzon,” notes Executive Director/CEO, Rich Anderson. “The Edenzons moved to this area just a few years ago and almost immediately became involved by volunteering and as members of our Leadership Circle. They offer consistent insight and always ask how we can further improve conditions for the lost, homeless, neglected and abused cats and dogs in our County. We are grateful to them for this personal commitment and for offering to host this warm and welcoming thank-you reception to others in the Palm Beach Gardens community dedicated to the welfare of animals.”

14 Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League

The Hon. Lesly Smith, Chairman of the Board of Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League, recently

announced the formation of a Junior Committee at Peggy Adams. The Committee is chaired by Judy and Fritz Van der Grift.

Fritz grew up in Palm Beach and attended Palm Beach Day School. He graduated high school from Deerfield Academy and received his B.S. in Political Science and Spanish from Palm Beach Atlantic University in 2010. Fritz is a financial advisor at Morgan Stanley in West Palm Beach where he specializes in wealth management, with a focus on complex trust and estate planning issues.

Judy also grew up in the area, attending Rosarian Academy and then Cardinal Newman High School. She received her B.S. from Florida State University, her nursing degree from the University of Miami and, most recently, her Family Nurse Practitioner degree from Georgetown University in 2017.

Fritz and Judy were married in October of 2014 and live in West Palm Beach with their two Weimaraners, Hans and Lady.

In addition to their new roles as Junior Committee Chairs, they are both active in their community. Fritz is a youth lacrosse coach and has led mission trips to the Dominican Republic and Cuba. Judy is active in their church, Bethesda by the Sea, most recently assisting with the Blessing of the Animals food drive.

Their love for animals has encouraged them to take on the challenge of leading Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League’s newly formed committee. They are encouraged by the positive feedback and are very excited to get started.

“It’s so important that we create a sense of ownership and responsibility within the next generation to care for these animals,” says Judy.

Fritz added, “I was blown away by the amount of interest among my peers who wanted to get involved. It reminded me that caring for animals is such a universal cause that spans across all groups. We are very excited about this new committee and are thankful for the opportunity to lead it!”

Have you ever wanted to add a pet to your family, but you just couldn’t? If you are someone who wants to

“watch over” the canine and feline residents in our dog and cat adoption centers, in a way that hovers above the rest, then please become one of our Guardian Angels.

A Guardian Angel funds the care of our resident cats or dogs in a specific condo or kennel. Thus, during your year as a Guardian Angel, you’ll be helping a number of pets as they await their forever home.

Your status will be recognized with a card on your sponsored condo or kennel naming you, your family, or your business as that pet’s Guardian Angel. You’ll also receive a certificate and a special angel pin. Anyone who visits the shelter will be reminded of your generosity.

The average cost of care for a dog or cat in our program is $19 a day and the average length of stay with us is 30 days.

Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League is pleased to announce that we have been certified by Points of Light as a Service Enterprise!

A Service Enterprise is an organization that fundamentally leverages volunteers and their skills throughout their organization to successfully deliver on its social mission. Peggy Adams has completed a thorough assessment, over 20 hours of training, consulting and extensive internal planning and change to even better integrate volunteers in our day to day operations.

45,994 – Total number of cats and dogs benefited by League programs and services

5,229 – Pets placed in loving homes

7,574 – Lost, injured or homeless cats and dogs were provided temporary shelter 6,314 – Lost, injured or homeless cats and dogs were brought to us by Palm Beach County residents 1,260 – Cats and dogs transferred in from Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control

434 – Cats and dogs transported by air or ground to New England shelters and other out-of-state rescues

354 – Lost pets were reunited with their grateful guardians

14,182 – Total number of spay and neuter surgeries (includes shelter surgeries)

8,273 – The number of cats and dogs spayed/neutered, vaccinated and microchipped at no cost to the community through grant funding

14,877 – Pets fed through Peggy’s Pantry Food Bank – a free community pet food bank to help keep animals in their homes when their owners are struggling financially 10,320 – Affordable vaccinations provided for cats and dogs

2,990 – Number of cats and dogs cared for by the League's Foster Program who were either too young or had health/behavioral issues needing to be addressed before entering our adoption program

598 – The number of kittens admitted to our Kitten Nursery where they received around-the-clock care – 24 hours a day, 7 days a week

662 – Volunteers donated 133,732 hours
