The climbs are relatively gentle to moderate and, without stopping en route, the walk takes about two hours. Victor Hugo arrived in Guernsey on 31st October 1855 and lived in exile for 15 years. The island that Hugo came to know so well is still largely recognisable today. From Hauteville House, he had a view of Havelet Bay where he liked to bathe, Castle Cornet and Herm of which he wrote and, on a fine day, his beloved France to where he once feared he might never return. VICTOR HUGO STATUE The statue is situated in the beautiful Candie Garden. Sculpted by the Breton sculptor Jean Boucher and unveiled in July 1914. VICTORIA TOWER It was at the top of the tower, erected in honour of a visit in 1848 by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, that Victor Hugo wrote some verses of La Fin de Satan (The End of Satan). Hugo and his mistress Juliette Drouet engraved their initials inside the tower. THE GREFFE AND THE PRISON The Greffe houses Guernsey’s registry office, courts and is the heart of the islands legal system. Hugo signed the purchase document for Hauteville House here in 1856. Guernsey’s old prison was also in this area, where Hugo intervened, in vain, to save a convicted murderer from being hanged. ST PETER PORT SEAFRONT Victor Hugo landed here in October 1855 and initially stayed on the seafront, as did his two sons and mistress Juliette Drouet. TOWN CHURCHVictor Hugo writes of visiting the parish church of St Peter Port, and also refers to it in his novel Toilers of the Sea (Les Travailleurs de la mer).

GUERNSEY MARKETSVictor Hugo enjoyed visiting the market buildings and was impressed by them. His servants shopped for him and his family at the French Halles, the oldest of the market buildings.

OLD QUARTERVictor Hugo regularly visited the Old Quarter of St Peter Port to feed his passion for curios. Many of his purchases can still be seen at Hauteville House.

CASTLE CORNETVictor Hugo enjoyed walking in this area during his exile in Guernsey. He saw the construction of the lighthouse and within the Castle a lifebelt and lifejacket that Hugo gave to the then harbour master can be seen.

HAVELET bAYVictor Hugo would regularly swim in Havelet Bay and refers to it in his novel Toilers of the Sea (Les Travailleurs de la mer).

HAUTEVILLEThe site of St Peter Port’s most famous address, Hauteville House (No.38), as well as his first residence in the street No 20, where he completed Contemplations. His beloved companion Juliette Drouet settled nearby.
