THE FOREST CHURCH The oldest part of the church incorporates massive stones that were once part of a dolmen. The church building consists of two main parts, the earliest dating to the 13th century. THE GERMAN OCCUPATION MUSEUM AND MACHINE GUN SLITS The German Occupation Museum tells the tale of the five-year long German Occupation. Many fortifications built by the occupying forces remain around the coastline. The Island was finally liberated on 9th May 1945. LES HOUARDS WELL A well, known as Les Houards, was probably the only source of safe water in the area. LES VARIOUFS Les Varioufs means werewolf. It was probably given the name by smugglers who wanted to deter people from visiting the area at night. BLUE PLAQUE DEDICATED TO DENYS CORBET Born in 1826, Denys was a painter of rural life, known for his images of Guernsey cows but he also wrote poetry in the local patois and edited a French-language newspaper. He died in 1909.
