K-12 NEWSLETTER

On 16 - 20 July, Walcha Central School students, Anastasia Haling and Shae Partridge, attended the 2018 Equestrian NSW Interschool State Championships held at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre.

Both girls exhibited amazing talent and sportsmanship throughout the competition.

Ana Haling received overall High Point Stockhorse Champion in eventing. She went up a level to EvA95 in eventing, where she had a clear round in both the showjumping and cross country to place 15th out of 40 riders. She was also First Runner-up Champion (third overall) in the senior division of two novice dressage tests receiving a 2nd and 10th place. Shae Partridge received 5th place in the girl rider and 1st in her hack class, resulting in her receiving third place overall in the Show Horse event.

Both Ana and Shae have now been selected to represent NSW at the National Interschool Equestrian Championships to be held at Werribee, Victoria, in October later this year. Congratulations girls on getting to national level and good luck in October.

Dance Festival Walcha Central School’s dance group energised the audience at the Tamworth New England Dance festival on Wednesday 15 and Thursday 16 August.

Students performed their dance routine ‘King of the Jungle’ to an upbeat remix from The Lion King. The students are congratulated for their outstanding determination and dedication to the dance group.

A huge thankyou also goes out to our choreographers and back stage managers Nicola Hoy and Isabelle Haslem.

Student Banking A representative from the Commonwealth Bank visits before school from 8.30 - 9am on Wednesdays in the primary building corridor where students are able to present their bankbooks and deposits for processing.

New students are welcome and can collect their banking packages from school.

It is hard to believe that we have reached the halfway point for Term 3. Although we may have reached the halfway point, we are certainly not winding down.

The process of teaching and learning never stops and there are plenty more events still to come that we will share in the next edition of our newsletter.

Trial Higher School Certificate This week, all students enrolled in Stage 6 courses undergo their Trial HSC examinations. This is an excellent opportunity for all students completing HSC courses to become familiar with the many facets of HSC examinations. This includes the structure of the papers and how questions need to be framed as well as using the allocated time efficiently.

We wish all of our Stage 6 students the very best and look forward to using the feedback from the examinations to enhance their performance in the HSC in Term 4.

UNE Visit Last week, a representative from the University of New England visited the school and spoke to interested students about studying at UNE. Students were given information about entry requirements, courses on offer as well as an insight into what it means to study at a tertiary institution.

Seussical Jr™ The cast has been chosen and rehearsals have begun for Seussical. Students are rehearsing each Monday afternoon under the direction of Miss MacDiarmid. There will be performances on Thursday 13 and Friday 14 December, so mark your diaries for what I am sure will be a highlight of the 2018 school calendar.

Student success Congratulations to all students who have represented the school at various events this term. We have achieved some amazing results.

Details of these achievements have been included in this edition of the newsletter.

Staff Professional Learning This term the focus of our staff learning is on the improvement of student writing.

Over the term, staff will be working in stage specific focus groups where they will unpack the writing initiative and develop strategies to improve and support student learning through writing. This will be complemented by staff reflecting on how their teaching practice has aided student improvement in writing, leading to a shared understanding of ‘what works best’ and how we can measure that impact.

Special thanks The last week at Walcha Central School was a tough week for many students and staff as well as the school community. Despite the challenges, it was both heartening and reassuring to see all members of the school community come together to provide the support, strength and kindness that enables healing to begin.

This was complemented by the array of messages we received from across the state as well as the support given by the Department of Education. I would like to publicly thank all staff for the care that they have shown towards students and each other.

Our thoughts and sympathies continue to be with Saylem’s family.

ATHLETICS RECORD Congratulations to Stephanie Blake who broke

the 9 year old girls 100m sprint record at the

WCS Athletics Carnival. This record was set

in 2010 by Maggie Halliday with a time of

16.41s.

Stephanie has broken this record with a time

of 16.06.

Thanks to Walcha Council and

the Roads and Maritime Services

(RMS), changes have been made

to the rear (Angle Street)

entrance to the school to

improve safety in the student drop off area.

The changes include:

Removal of existing signage and replacement

with a school drop-off / pick-up zone.

The addition of a disabled parking space.

Extension of the existing footpath to end at the

intersection of Angle Street and Hill Street.

celebrations, Year 3 and Year 5

were able to experience songs,

traditions and art related to the

Torres Strait Islander culture.

Local mother, Cassie McKenna,

shared with the students her

background as a Torres Strait

Islander woman. Students learnt

about the flag, songs and made

traditional head pieces known

In the last week of Term 3, Year 7-12 students and staff travelled to Dorrigo HS to participate in the annual Dorrigo v Walcha exchange, now in its 53

rd year.

In a rare sight for staff and students, we were greeted with traditional Dorrigo weather – misty rain, which would last for the majority of the carnival.

Undeterred, the students jumped into the athletics carnival, soccer, basketball, softball, touch football, volleyball, netball, Oz Tag, cricket, Rugby League, “Open Mic” night, debating, spelling bee, squash and tennis. The students also expressed their creative flair by dressing up as “couples / duo’s” for the disco, with some amazing costumes and imagination on display.

The Dorrigo exchange is one of the true highlights of the school year and 2018 was no different. After three days of fierce competition, incredible sportsmanship and continued friendship, it was Dorrigo who handled the home conditions a little better and came out in front.

A huge thankyou goes to all coaches who prepared teams; Mrs Brown, Mrs Mackaway, Miss Saffy, Miss Bruton and Mr Hall for making their way to support the students; and most importantly, the students themselves for doing what Walcha Central does best, getting in and having a crack! Well done guys, we’re very proud.

We look forward to hosting Dorrigo in

2019.

"Oh, the thinks you can think" when Dr. Seuss' best-loved characters collide

and create an unforgettable Musical!

Horton the Elephant, the Cat in the Hat and all of our favourite Dr Seuss

characters will be springing to life when Walcha Central School, performs

Suessical Jr ™ by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens (based on the works of

Dr Suess).

Rehearsals have begun and students are ready to have fun and work hard in creating our very own

masterpiece.

Audience members will be transported from various places inside a small boy’s imagination; from the Jungle

of Nool to the Circus McGurkus with the Cat in the Hat narrating the journey. The story follows Horton the

Elephant, who discovers a speck of dust containing tiny people called the ‘Whos’. Horton must protect the

Whos from the dangers of the world while guarding an abandoned egg that's been left in his care by

the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. The powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are

challenged, but will they emerge triumphant in Horton’s quest to help those in need?

Show times are Thursday December 13 and Friday evening December 14.

PSSA Athletics On Friday 17

August, 22 students represented Walcha

Central School at the PSSA Athletics Carnival in

Armidale. All students participated in a range of track

and field events showcasing some of their many talents.

From this event we have the junior girls and senior girls

relay teams competing at North West. Stephanie Blake,

Emily Blake, Isabella Crawford and Jemma Warden will

also be going to North West in individual events.

Congratulations to all students who attended and the

amazing sportsmanship that was displayed.

Tayla Carter has been successful in her application to attend the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) in January 2019. It is a highly competitive process with a series of interviews and speeches. She will attend with over 200 students.

The NYSF Year 12 Program is a 12-day residential program designed to give students a broader understanding of the diverse study and career options available in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and to encourage continued studies in these fields.

A big thank you has been received from the

Starlight Foundation to everyone who

supported Year 8’s Awareness Day by wearing

purple and yellow and bringing in a gold coin

donation.

A total of $241.55 was raised for the charity

which helps support and brighten the lives of

sick kids.

On Friday 27 July, 4 primary and 4 secondary students attended the NSW State Cross Country Championships held at Eastern Creek.

All students ran well, many achieving personal best times.

Results were as follows:

Primary Secondary Stephanie Blake - 13th Phoebe Imberger - 80th Emily Blake - 47th Jackson Imberger - 25th Jemma Warden - 33rd Sam Feltham - 45th Isabella Crawford - 74th Anastasia Haling - 43rd.

TASTER DAY - WEDNESDAY 29 AUGUST 2018

On Wednesday 29 August, Walcha Central School will hold the third High School Taster Day for 2018.

Year 5 & 6 students from the Walcha District will participate in the Taster Day which will incorporate Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) activities as part of Science Week. Students will participate in sport in the afternoon.

In order for your child to gain the benefits from this day, please ensure that they have the following items for the day:

dressed in full sports uniform

water bottle

recess and lunch can be ordered from the canteen

pencil case

The Year 6 into 7 Orientation Day is scheduled for Year 6 students and their parents during Term 4 on Thursday 22 November 2018. To enhance this experience, we are holding an additional day on Wednesday 21 November 2018 where students will engage in workshops and activities to prepare them for high school.

Primary Debating This year, the primary debating teams have had mixed

success as far as winning debates against other schools,

however, all members have grown in confidence and skill

in presenting their opinion with evidence in front of an

audience.

Mr Williams and Mrs Watkins are extremely proud of all

the students’ commitment to practising outside of normal

school hours and the team spirit that was evident at each

debate.

The Year 6 team consisting of Charlotte Overton,

Charlotte Mooney, Ryley Smith, Ali Nivision and Isabella

Crawford finished the competition with a win against Yr 6

Westdale Public School in the last round, finishing the

season with 2 wins and 2 losses.

The Year 5 team consisting of Samuel Swain, Jemma

Warden, Emily Blake, Jazz Hayton, Harriet Crawford and

Ali Kealey were narrowly beaten by Yr 6 Nemingha

Team but finished the season with 3 wins and 1 loss.

PSSA TOUCH FOOTBALL KNOCKOUT Walcha Central School Boys and Girls Touch Football teams played at the PSSA Touch Knockout competition on Tuesday 14 August. The girls came away with 3 wins out of 4 games and the boys won 1 out of 3 games. All students displayed great sportsmanship and played hard all day.
