Principal’s Report Dear Parents and Carers Flexible Furniture This term four of our classrooms have undergone a flexible furniture upgrade. The students and teachers of 3E, 4P, 4/5KD and 5PD are very excited with their new and upgraded learning spaces. We know that everyone will enjoy the benefits of working collaboratively in small or large groups with the ability to be adaptable to learning modes and technology.

Cyber Safety Lady Presentations In line with our goal to support students and parents to make informed and effective decisions when online, we engaged the services of the ‘Cyber Safety Lady’, Leonie Smith. She worked with our Year 5 and 6 students on the topic of ‘How to be an Amazing Digital Citizen!’ This included her top tips for students such as not uploading or sharing videos or photos of others without their permission. Persuasive Writing

Our writing focus across the school this term has been on persuasive writing. There have been some great writing examples from our students and I will share some of these later in this edition of The Billboard. Using the 7 Steps to Writing Success program has helped our students to chunk their writing and gain success with their ‘Sizzling Starts’, ‘Banning the Boring Bits’, and ‘Exciting Endings’.

Semester 1 Reports

Our Semester 1 reports will be sent home with students in Week 10 of this term. In English and Maths we focus on progress so far this year. Teachers will also identify learning goals for students to continue to develop in each of these key learning areas. This report complies with the Department of Education requirements and compares your child’s achievements against state-wide syllabus criteria. It identifies areas of strength and areas for future development. All Key Learning Areas are reported upon. Feedback about your child’s social development and commitment to learning is also provided. A letter will be sent home with reports further outlining the new report structure for this semester. Kindergarten 2020 – Enrol Now

If you have a child commencing Kindergarten in 2020, please see the office to obtain an enrolment pack or join us on our school tour next Tuesday 25 June at 9:30 am. Students and parents for Kindergarten 2020 should also join us for our Showcase and School Tour on Tuesday 6 August at 9:30am. Every student will receive a passport to collect stickers as they tour around the school with our senior students.

Roofing Works and Supervision

Over the next two weeks, all roofing across the school is being replaced (this may take longer depending on the weather). The new roof on the OOSH block was completed last the weekend. This includes insulation of the roof cavities. We appreciate your support in keeping everyone safe by avoiding the teacher car park area at all times and ensuring that your children are not dropped at school prior to supervision being available at 8:45 am.

There are places available at before and after school care should you require care for your children before 8:45am or after 3:15pm. Please contact Primary OSHCare to book your place.

Education Week Open Day and Grand friends’ Day

Please save the date – Wednesday 7 August, when we will hold our Open Day and Grand friends’ day from 9:30am. There is more information available later in this edition of The Billboard.

Kind regards Caroline Desmond Principal

Year 3 – 6 News All students thoroughly enjoyed the Opera Australia performance of ‘The Owl and the Pussycat’. The high energy presentation showcased the genre of opera and was a great culmination to the unit of work that has been taught across all classes in music lessons this term. A huge thank you to Mrs Carden for her work in preparing the classes, the high level of knowledge that our students displayed was commented upon by the visiting performers.

Preparations are underway for our annual athletics carnival, which is being held in the last week of school (Thursday 4 July). If you are able to assist on the day, please return the parent/carer helper slip (located on the bottom of the permission notes) to Mr Dickson. Last Tuesday our bands held a very successful, and popular!!, Sip n Sizzle event. Thank you very much to all of the band families who assisted with this event and to all of the students who supported the day (end enjoyed their delicious lunch). Some reminders re students who are attending winter PSSA. As per the permission notes, all students need to be present at 8.50am every Friday morning for a roll call with their team coaches. Coaches have spoken to their teams regarding their organisation and expectations for team training sessions. Students are reminded that they should be wearing short, white socks as part of their PSSA representative uniforms, apart from our soccer teams who need to wear the long blue and yellow football style socks. If you have any questions, please direct them to your team coaches – Netball (Miss Edgtton/Mrs Mackie) / Soccer (Mr Patterson) / AFL (Mr Dickson). Trish Fox Assistant Principal

K – 2 News Opera Australia was a highlight this last fortnight, we were so lucky to have the opportunity again to enjoy the polished performance. The students thoroughly enjoyed being exposed to a genre they are usually not as familiar with. A huge thank you to Mrs Carden, our Performing Arts teacher K-6, who has worked tirelessly during lessons to prepare the students and their knowledge. After the performance one of the performers told a staff member that out of the 110 shows that they have completed this year so far, only 4 schools have been prepared and ready to participate (there are sections during the performance where the students can join in and sing and participate) and Wakehurst was one of these 4. Congratulations students and Mrs Carden. Athletics Carnival In Week 10 is the Athletics Carnival- A note will be sent home soon regarding details specific for K-2 and a parent helper request slip with the annual K-2 novelty. If you’re able to help we’d love to see you! Jane Packman Assistant Principal

From the Administration Team New Sign in Process for all Visitors We have installed a new visitor sign in system at Wakehurst Public School. Passtab is a leading electronic visitor management system. All visitors to the school must visit the school office on arriving at the school to sign in and obtain a visitors badge. This includes parent volunteers participating in reading groups, canteen and uniform shop. Parents attending an assembly do not need to sign in as you are all assembled in the one place. It is a requirement for Workplace Health and Safety regulations that all visitors sign in at the office on entering the school. Term Statement of Accounts As we are getting close to the end of Term 2, we ask that parents please ensure all Term Accounts have been paid. Payments can be made via the school website https://wakehurst-p.school.nsw.gov.au/ on the Home page via the “Make a Payment” tab or directly at the office with cash or cheque. All extracurricular activities organised by the school on behalf of students require payment in order to cover the costs of the activities, including excursions, incursions, sporting program and events. Your assistance in prompt payment is appreciated. We would like to thank all the parents who are up to date with their Term Account payments. Lynda Trevenar School Administration Manager

P&C Events & Fundraising

We are looking for a volunteer for the P&C Treasurer role. The Treasurer receives and deposits all monies, maintains records, draws cheques and presents accounts to each meeting, and presents all records for auditing each year. The Treasurer is responsible for: • Receiving and depositing money. • Maintaining records. • Drawing cheques and presenting accounts. • Being signatory on bank accounts. • Ensuring books are kept up to date. • Auditing – organising and co-ordinating audit of books. • Reporting of all transaction and a bank reconciliation at P&C meeting, an annual report to be presented at P&C AGM. So what are the minimum skills you really need to do the role? 1. Have used internet banking 2. Have used a computer 3. Able to text/email 4. Time: approx. 1-2 hours a week on the role and about an hour or two getting ready for the monthly meeting. We use Xero to manage our accounts but experience is not necessary as we can provide full training, but for anyone with Accounting skills and experience it would obviously be an advantage. So if you are interested in helping the school out, and the kids love the fact you are on the P&C, please email [email protected] or see the below link for more information. WAKEHURST OSHC CENTRE

Email address: [email protected] Mobile: 0427 255 966 We are happy to announce that we have drafted a new afternoon tea menu for winter. The menu will include much warmer items for the cold afternoons coming up and has been created in line with dietary guidelines and nutritional checklists using suggestions and feedback received from parents completing our Menu Survey and some of the children’s suggestions. For children with dietary requirements and allergies, an alternative will be offered along with the assorted fruit platter that is served each afternoon.

We are super excited for our upcoming July Vacation Care! This term’s program was created using suggestions from the children and feedback from parents in our April Vacation Care Survey, and will include; pyjama and electronics day, a reptile show, sports world cup, Disney On Ice and an excursion to stomping ground to celebrate the end of the school holidays. Please note that Disney On Ice is now fully booked. We’d like to remind families that permanent bookings can be changed via your portal at www.myfamilylounge.com.au. If you wish to cancel your bookings, you will need to fill out a cancellation form which can be found in the centre. Casual bookings are always available and can be booked through the My Family Lounge app.

Any known absences due to illness, holidays, or family occasions should be relayed to the team at WOSHC as soon as possible. Absences that need to be followed up will incur a $30 non-notified absence fee as this takes time and attention away from the rest of the children attending. As we do each term, we have a free Health & Wellbeing program for children who attend the service which usually runs weekly for 5 weeks and embraces and promotes healthy attitudes and lifestyles for children. The participating sports and days of the week vary each term and the sports are decided upon by the children. Primary OSHCare employ professional coaches to conduct these sessions and the staff are also encouraged to participate. This term we had Baseball and Soccer on a Wednesday and Thursday and were pleased to see all children giving it a go.

Families can contact Centre staff on 0427 255 966 or by emailing [email protected]

Kind regards Ellie, Erin & the WOSHC team!
