Mentoring forExcellence

Do you want support to get into a top uni? Are you between 16-18 and are you aiming for A*/A at GCSE?

Our Mentoring for Excellence (MfE) scheme aims to identify and support students with the potential to progress to top universities including Oxford and Cambridge. Students on the programme have access to a senior member of our College community as a mentor.

What is it? Our Mentoring for Excellence (MfE) programme offers a unique opportunity for students to have a professional mentor to help them develop the skills, knowledge, experience and personal qualities required to succeed in progressing to the top Russell Group universities, including Oxford and Cambridge.

Who is it for?Participants will be students aged 16-18 who have achieved an A* / A in their GCSEs at school.

How does it work?Each student in the scheme will work in partnership with a senior member of the College community and meet with them regularly for a one to one review. The mentor might be a member of the Senior Leadership Team, the Governing Body or other experienced professionals within the College.

What are the benefits?You’ll benefit from the experience, advice and guidance of your mentor in so many ways. It’ll raise your aspirations, improve motivation, persistence and application, improve communication skills, self-esteem and confidence, and help prepare for interviews and university aptitude tests.

There’s also an Open the Door to Oxbridge programme and a number of university visits.

Is it compulsory?No, not at all. You’re invited to take part and we recommend that you give it a go! You can withdraw from it at any time, but last year’s mentees said they found it very helpful and they enjoyed the experience of liaising with the senior management team.

Wakefield College Sixth Form Prospectus 2016/1718

What are they?

These are government-led changes to the content and assessment of A Levels to ensure students are better equipped for higher education and for employment.

When will this happen?

The reforms are happening gradually over three years. Some subjects are already being taught in the reformed way from this year. By the time you start College in September 2016, most of the subjects on offer will be reformed.

What are the changes?

All the exams for the reformed A Levels will be taken at the end of the course. So, to get a full A Level, your grade will depend on how you perform in your exams in the summer term at the end of the two-year course.

There is a big emphasis on written exams and therefore far less coursework.

The maximum coursework percentage will be 20% and many subjects will have no coursework at all.

This includes all the science subjects, however, a separate practical assessment will be made and recorded as a pass or a fail with your certificate.

Are there any exams in the first year?

Yes. In addition to internal assessments to monitor your progress, all students will sit externally marked AS exams at the end of the first year.

This will be useful for you, your teachers and universities as an indication of how you might perform in the final exams, and it will help university admissions tutors to make decisions when offering a place at university.

However, it’s important to remember that if you continue to the full A Level, the AS marks will not count towards the final A Level grade.

Have all subjects changed?

Film, Information Technology, Law, Mathematics and Media will not change until September 2017.

For these subjects you'll sit AS exams at the end of your first year which will count towards your final grade. The remaining 50% of marks will come from your second year assessments in the A2 exams. In the case of Film, Media and ICT this includes some coursework.

A Level reforms and what it means for you

1. Ofsted and Wakefield CollegeWakefield College is a Good College - but don’t just take our word for it, look at what Ofsted say!

Ofsted conducted a full inspection of Wakefield College in February 2014, looking at every area of our work from sixth form provision, to training that will help people get back into work. They concluded that we are a ‘Good’ College.

They judged that:

“the large majority of teaching, learning and assessment is good or better;

“students make good progress and that their studies prepare them for further study or employment;

“students speak highly of the advice and guidance they receive about university applications, and that progression to further and higher study is good;

“staff are enthusiastic and well-qualified; that resources are of high-quality.”

They were also complimentary about the support we give to students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities, rating it as ‘Excellent’ and concluded that students have a strong voice. We aim to make every student’s learning experience the best it can be at Wakefield College and were delighted that the inspectors recognised this. You can read the full Ofsted report on our website or www.ofsted.gov.uk.

2. We treat our students like adults and expect them to take a considerable amount of responsibility for their own work and progress. However, we know that all students may need support from time to time, to make sure they achieve their goals. 5. SafeguardingWakefield College’s safeguarding policy ensures that all students attending activities in the College do so in a safe and secure environment.In our 2014 Ofsted inspection, the Inspectors commented:

“Managers and governors place a strong emphasis on safeguarding and promoting the welfare of students. The College meets fully its statutory requirements for safeguarding students. All staff have undertaken relevant training with regular updating. Behaviour is good. Almost all students report feeling safe and students who met inspectors spoke highly of the presence of security staff and

their visibility at all times.”

Key factors in this are:· all employment offers are subject to enhanced DBS disclosures

· no staff start work until all relevant checks are completed and recorded· all staff must undertake safeguarding awareness training relevant to their post

· College-wide anti-bullying and harassment policy rigorously applied

· Governors receive annual training and all Governors accept responsibility for safeguarding

Whilst this is all excellent news for the College, it is also excellent news for students and for their parents and guardians who can rest assured that all who spend time learning with the College will do so in a safe environment.

6. Equality & diversityWakefield College aims to become a fully inclusive organisation, eliminating discrimination, promoting equality and embracing diversity in all that we do. We celebrate the rich variety of people who make up the College community, from different cultures and ethnic backgrounds.We have put in place policies, training and procedures to make equality and diversity a reality for the whole College community.

“The college promotes equality and diversity very well and enables students of all abilities and backgrounds to engage in college life and flourish.” Ofsted 2014

How we demonstrate our commitmentFrom the outset, staff are clear about College’s expectations of them in terms of supporting equality and celebrating diversity. This commitment is further underlined in policies, planning and staff training.College ensures that all policies are analysed to address any negative impact in relation to all nine protected characteristics covered by the Equality Act 2010: sex; race; disability; marriage and civil partnership; sexual orientation; religion or belief; pregnancy and maternity; gender reassignment and age. College is firmly committed to equality objectives which will make a real difference in the classroom. Planning in the classroom is expected to maximise opportunities to promote diversity and foster good relationships among all groups of students. Regular training and development initiatives support staff in making this a reality.In keeping with College strategic objectives, to: “Connect with our District in order to raise aspirations, particularly in deprived areas “ College continues to play an active part in initiatives across the Wakefield district to eliminate discrimination and promote equality and diversity.

Measuring our progressThe effectiveness of these policies is monitored through a comprehensive range of measures, which involves regular collection, reporting and analysis of staff and learner data on the basis of a range of demographic factors. A summary of this is available on the College website. An annual report on equality and diversity, including monitoring data, is considered by the College’s Board of Governors.

“As a result of close monitoring, managers have taken successful action to reduce gaps in achievement between different groups of students” Ofsted 2014

Students’ responsibilitiesStudents, too, have a responsibility to promote and embed equality and diversity. The College Charter sets out what students can expect from the College, and the Learner Agreement sets out minimum expectations from students. Further details are available in the Student Planner on Moodle.

Care LeaversWakefield College is part of the HEART (Higher Education Access Rewarding Transforming) partnership and shares their commitment to supporting Care Leavers who wish to apply, enter and succeed in Higher Education. This commitment seeks to increase the number of Care Leavers entering Higher Education, raise awareness of the needs of this group of students, and enables Care Leavers to make the most of their time in Higher Education and to complete their courses successfully. To support this commitment, College is developing a scheme of bursaries, which will help to overcome financial barriers Care Leavers may face to access and achievement in Higher Education.
