/ Biology - Femalei think that this university is gettingsnootier every year. i also think that it sucksyour money out for stupid crap and thenfinds ways to take more of it.

, Biology - MaleThere are far too many negitive reviewshere to do this unversity justice. . . if you arethinking about Wake... LISTEN UP. Yes,there is a homogeneous population here. Iam white so i am not going to preach aboutbeing a different ethnicity and what campuslife is like. However, the average student atWake is by no means close – minded. It is fartoo difficult to get in to Wake to allow trulyignorant people. So please, do not look atwake just because of the mostly caucasianstudent body. Yes, there are a great dealof conservatives here but i fail to see thatas a limitation. No one will try to brain-wash your ideas and slap a ”W” sticker onyour car. There is a great deal of wealthhere. But the point of college is to be edu-cated and not comparaing each others ma-

terial means. Greek life is big but it won’tkeep you from froming friendships. I didn’tpledge but many of my friends did and it putnothing between us. Academics are greatdespite the well earned nickname Work For-est. My advice...time managment. I guessthat i am trying to stress the importance ofrealizing that some negitive aspect of Wakeare common on some level to all universi-ties. Wake students are smart, educated, and generally friendly and warm (especiallyto newcomers). Please look at Wake. I lovethis university and hope that everyone wholooks at this site will visit Wake and not bediscouraged by negitive comments.

, Business - Management and Administration- MaleWake Forest University is one of the topsmall liberal arts universities in the nation. It provides individual attention with everyday interaction with professors. There areno TA’s at Wake Forest. Wake Forest catersto well – rounded students rather than thetypical ”nerd” university. If you are lookingfor a cut – throat Duke atmosphere, WakeForest is not the place for you. The WakeForest Deamon Deacons consistently havea top notch Division I basketball team.

, Business - Management and Administration- MaleI have had an exceptional experience atWake Forest so far. I believe that its bestfeature is its size. With an undergraduateenrollment of around 4000, I see people allover the place that I know, yet there aremany people I’ve never seen before. An-other nice thing about a small enrollmentis that I really get to know my professors insmall classes. My largest class so far (evenhaving taken all introductory courses) wasabout 30 people. I also had a class of7, and a class of 6. I don’t think you’llever find that anywhere else. The facultyhere is amazing. Most of them will bendover backward to help you in your classes. They’re required to have office hours, and

are generally more than willing to acco-modate your schedule. They’re also verystudent – oriented. They are all required toparticipate in research, but they generallyprioritize that after teaching.Academically, it is pretty tough here. Istudy around 2 – 3 hours on a normalweek night. Exams are what really killme, though. I study about 5 hours beforeany given test, and between 10 – 20 hourson average for a midterm or final. It mayseem like a lot, but it’s not that bad.Intense and stressful for awhile, but theneverything gets back to normal. I definitelyhave time for other activities. I spendsignificant time working with 3 differentstudent organizations, hold 2 jobs, and stillmanage to have some free time to myselfand keep my grades up. I guess the keyis just time management. However, if youwant to party a lot and not have too muchwork, I wouldn’t recommend Wake. Wakehas absolutely amazing resources if you arewilling to take advantage of them. Peoplecomplain about not having a social life atWake, yet many of them are not involved inany substantial activities and don’t reallymake an effort to do things. As far as the Greek system goes, I don’tthink it’s as big of a deal as everyone makesit out to be. It definitely has a very strongpresence, but I don’t think it necessarilydivides the campus in a significant way. Idid not rush, but not for any particularreason. Many of my friends rushed, butdidn’t pledge, and there was not anypressure for people to do so. My friendshipsdidn’t change because so – and – so was inthis or that frat or sorority. I’d say about1/2 of my friends are Greek, but it hasn’tnegatively impacted anything.Another stereotype of Wake is that it’scomposed of rich white people. I’d say thisis somewhat accurate, although I don’tbelieve that Wake is quite as homogenousas this stereotype implies. Politically, I’dsay that Wake is pretty diverse. Not only

does it have a strong conservative voice, italso has a strong liberal voice with manystudents in between. Ethnically, Wake islacking. However, they have recognizedtheir problem and are actively trying tochange this and to integrate other ethnicgroups into the student body. There is self– segregation of different ethnic groups, butI don’t think this has anything to do withWake Forest itself. Wake is definitely on thehigher end of the socio – economic scale. Iknow of only one student here who couldn’tattend here if he didn’t have some sort ofscholarship. BMW’s, Audi’s, and the likeare all over the place, many students go tosummer homes in Aspen, the Carribean, orHiltonhead for vacations and many of myfriends are kids of diplomats, politicians, businessmen, etc. Wake has recognized thisdisparity and is working to improve this byoffering more need – based scholarships. The one thing that Wake does lack is anysort of a college town atmosphere. Therearen’t many places close enough to walkto (Reynolda Village is within walkingdistance, but it targets the rich parentsmore than the rich kids), so you have todrive everywhere. There are plenty ofeating options off – campus, but it wouldbe nice to have something close by.As I said at the beginning of this review, Ihave had an exceptionally good experienceat Wake and would highly recommend it toalmost anyone. It has its problems, but thepositive features far outweigh the negative.Wake Forest is rising in stature evidencedby increasingly selective admissions, sta-tistically improving entering classes andthe many students who turn down offersat other top schools (eg Harvard, Stanford,Duke) in favor of our small size and friendlyatmosphere. It’s a great place to be. . .

✸ Business - Management and Administration- FemaleIn 1980 Wake did not believe in grade in-flation i.e. it’s student population’s average

performance was considered a ”C”. Wewere told often that there would be no”A’s” in our classes and often they weretrue to their word. Consequently, especiallyin the business department, a grade of ”B”was a badge of honor. Unfortunately, theworld at large was not aware of this fact, and although I believe that raising the barwas, in the long run, a positive, it wasdetrimental to those who wished to go onto graduate school. I believe I graduatedwith a 2.85 with a BS in business and allthe the requirements for a BA in French(although the University would not grantme 2 degrees) and I remember feeling fairlyinadequate until I scored in the 91% on theGMAT. . . and many of my friends scored aswell or better on the LSATS and MCATS.However, most of them were not grantedadmission to graduate school because oftheir GPA’s. How unfortunate for suchhard – working and talented people to haveto post – phone theirs academic careersbecause of a grading policy that beliedtheir true abilities. The President of theUniversity, Dr. Scales, told me in a one onone interview that if two ”A” students fromthe same high school each attended Dukeand Wake at the end of their four yearsthe Duke student’s GPA would be a fullgrade point higher than the Wake’s student.Which again would not be a terrible thingif this were well known – however, it is notand that is a crime. I must say though thatmy college experience at ”Work” Forest (asthe students still call it) made transitionto the real world a piece of cake. Mywork ethic and determination to succeedallowed me to shine at from my very firstjob and beyond. While graduates fromother schools were unable to learn and beproductive and were eventually fired, I andmy fellow graduates thrived and becamevaluable employees and citizens.

Wake Forest University

Wake forest is the most homogeneousschool I have ever experienced in my life.Snooby people, all white, all rich, all fromsuburbs, all Republican, all homophobic.Don’t go to Wake Forest if you are open –minded and unique. I am transferring toeither Villanova or George Washington. Ichose WF over them last year because ofthe academics here, boy do they not matterwhen you are miserable. A lot of my friendsare leaving too, we may try to go to thesame school. . . just to experience college.

, Business - Management and Administration- MaleWake Forest gave me an opportunity to livein the South for 4 years and it was a greatexperience. My main contention with theschool surrounded my major, the CallowayBusiness school. Being from a major metr-politan area in New England, I know thatWake is a not a name every employer knowswell. The difficult academics, deflatedaverage GPAs, and extensive divisionalrequirements do not necessarily registerwith most businessmen, although manyWake professors would claim that EVERY-ONE knows how hard the school is. Thisis simply not true. Although I graduatedwith a respectable GPA, I know far toomany smart classmates who are strugglingto land jobs because of their GPAs. Wakeneeds more external awareness when itcomes to addressing academic requirementsand expectations.

✸ Business - Management and Administration- Malepos:challenging academicsfriendly students/faculty10/1 student/teacher ratio. . . you feelcomfortable asking questions, get to knowpeople in class fairly wellcampus is beautifulathletics...i see bball and football playersdaily (2 live on my hall)

Cons:challenging academics (if you dont want towork/learn, do not come herefood...subpar – however they are redoingthe entire food system for 05 – 06 yearshomogenius in race and socio – economicbackroundsmall class size...not good if you dont go toclasshope this helps...im a freshman in my 2ndsemester – i would not want to be anywhereelse

, Business - Management and Administration- MaleI just completed my second year at Wakeand my opinion of the university hasimproved. I was somewhat disappointedwith the social aspects of Wake, partlybecause my expectations where unrealistic.I have made some great friends and haveacclimated to the university and now trulyenjoy my time here. This is a conservativeplace with intelligent and dedicated stu-dents. There is some partying of course, but students work hard and are committedto being a success.

✸ Education - Female*The good:Wake has very challenging academics; I hadto work much harder for my grades, even inthe divisional classes. It’s not called ”workforest” for nothing. Your classmates are alljust as smart as you so it’s something toget used to after high school, but it’s greatbeing able to find intellectually stimulatingconversation just about anywhere. It’s likeDuke intelligence without the snobbery.Great athletics are always an option –football and basketball really bring schoolspirit out and draw the student bodytogether like nothing else can. It’s funbeing able to get to know the players sincethey live on our halls.I had no trouble finding many friendlypeople, especially on my freshman hall (I

believe that part of that experiences comesfrom choosing substance – free) and it’snot because I fit the mold of the typicalWake student (however reasonable thatstereotype might be). I am a white protes-tant, but that’s about it – I am politicallyliberal and come from a home of poverty. The amazing people I have gotten to know(both conservative/liberal, Greek/non –Greek, etc) are not judgemental of peopledifferent from them. I don’t drink and I’mnot part of a panhellenic sorority, and itstill isn’t hard to have a social life (thoughadmittedly it does suffer more than at otherschools because half of our social time isspent working together )Winston isn’t the greatest college townfor sure – but there are things to do ifyou want to find them (just not right bycampus) Good luck finding all that muchfree time anyway, with homework andextracurriculars as everyone here was thatoverachiever in high school – but there arethings to do around campus in Winston, especially if you’re into the arts.Teachers for the most part are awesome –with small classes, they really get to knowyou. They’re not spending all their timeon research, and do occasionally invite youout or to their house for dinner. Facultyadvisers sometimes do the same. There areof course profs who are very bad with thegrade deflation, but for the most part theywill at least care how you are doing and bewilling to help you (or move an exam if youget sick during exam week. . . )Excellent study abroad programs, theyreally encourage it; I spent a semester inAustralia, and have had friends spend (withWake and other programs) time in Europe,Asia, Central and South America.*The bad:Your social life will indeed suffer if youhave any trouble at all balancing hard workwith building relationships with people; itdefinately takes a lot of effort to do both ofthese things effectively at Wake. As much

as I love the motto ”Pro Humanitate”, andas much good and service I see Wake Foreststudents doing, we are often left to wonderhow they really expect us to care deeply forthe good of humanity when we’re too busydoing (sometimes) busywork to really beinvested in the community and our fellowstudents.I also question whether the grade (andego) deflation is necessary to achieve theacademic standing they strive for, and iffuture employers really care about the littleapologia for the low GPA that accompaniestranscripts. I’ll have to discover that inthe real world outside the ”bubble.” Thenew meal plan is NOT an awesome deal forincoming freshman – hence my decision tolive off – campus this coming year.Overall, I have loved my experience beinga Demon Deacon; I bear the name withpride and wouldn’t trade it for anything. But I know this is because I prayed verymuch for my college decision, and it wasn’thard knowing I wanted to come to Wakewhatsoever. It’s definitely not for everyonebut hopefully this helps if you’re thinkingabout it=)

, English - FemaleWake allows for upward mobility of ambi-tious students within their major or area(s)of interest. If they can tell that you’re ex-cited, your golden with professors and theybecome more like mentors – some treat youas colleagues whose oppinions they valuewith vested interest. I’ve had much fun atWake, but now that I’m a senior I’ve alsofound my academic niche ,and both realmscompliment eachother. It’s ok to be ’dorkycool’ here. Actually, people admire it, Ithink, as originality. . . as long as you stillmake time to hang out and drink. Gradesare often not reflective of your understand-ing or effort when it comes to divisionals, but my professors who are writing – ratherasked to write for me – letters of reccomde-

nation for graduate school, easily look pastthat and the Registrar includes a note aboutgrade deflation on transcripts. All in all, Imade my own experience here. On the onehand, no one will seek you out to be activeon campus if you don’t want to be, but onthe other hand, the school is small enoughthat professors stimulate original thoughtand diaglouge in class which, in my case, was the spring board for my dreams; thatbeing, the act of another drawing me outfrom my aloof, shy, etc demeanor. Peoplehere do care a lot about eachother, fromfriends to interclass relations, and in gen-eral will help you through rough times (asin those weeks when you feel really behindand as for help). Winston is actually a cul-tural mecca but people just dont know it,nor can I say that I have fully taken ad-vantage of the arts, music, and downtownscene as I could’ve. However, downtown hastaken great strides in improving awareness– its the first city in the country to havefree wireless internet, there’s a trolley thattakes you down to the restaurants, galleries,NC school of the Arts, and GREAT mu-sic. Small and big bands come here often, and the best part is that either way theyoften play at smaller venues, one in partic-ular called Ziggy’s, where you’re one in 500and tickets are 5 – 25$$. Anyways, plentyto do when you’re not busting your ass inthe library. Oh yeah, the campus has wire-less internet too, and of course you get twolaptops during your four years at Wake. There are things that I dont like, such as thePARKING, but there again, it’s one of theonly private schools in the south to all fresh-men to bring cars. There isnt a whole lot ofdiverstiy if you look at numbers alone, butin the classroom, minorties will often speakthe most and argue the best points. Youmight not intermix outside of class a wholelot if you dont try, but within the class-room experience the most valuable take –home lessons are those of differing perspec-tives...ok thats enough I suppose. Its late.

, English - FemaleWake is a very small school – 3000 un-dergrad, but provides so many of the ben-efits of a large university: big athletics(school spirit is the best),greek life, greatfacilities, research opportunities, and greatstudy abroad opportunities as well. Unlikelargeer univerisities, the athletes live amongthe rest of the students, there is no frater-nity/sorority row, and class sizes averageabout 20 people. For some, adjustment tothe typical Wake student may take a while.By typical I mean white, anglo – saxon, protestant – oh yeah, and RICH. As a mi-nority from very middle class, I’m still ad-justing to the girls who wear make – up tothe gym, people who drive extremely expen-sive cars, and those who’s parents are ableto pay for all of their college and still sendthem 200 – 300 dollars a week for allowance. The funny thing is that most of them do notrealize how incredibly fortunate they are orthat they have so much more money thanothers. Nevertheless, they are still very nicepeople. It’s not difficulty to make friendsand if you want to seclude yourself, it’s veryeasy to do as well. As far as weekends go,when the frats aren’t on probation, that’swhere all the parties are. Greek or non –greek, from freshmen to seniors, every oneis welcome. If you’re not into drinking, theycan still be places for socializing. Winston– Salem does provide entertainment if youmake the effort to look for it. There are tonsof restaraunts and the mall is only a coupleof miles away from campus. Campus food –average. If you’re a vegetarian, consider an-other school or you can do all your shoppingat the grocery store. Community service isbig on campus and it’s so much fun. Thereare tons of religious organizations and differ-ent clubs to get involved in as well. There’ssomething for everyone here. All in all though, I can’t imagine being any-where else and I feel as if I have made thebest decision. But just like any other school,it’s not for everyone.

, English (Alumni) - MaleA mere blurb could never do justice to the”Wake Forest experience.” One must reallywrite the book on it.

• English (Alumni) - MaleWell, I was NOT in a fraternity and canalso unequivocally say Wake Forest was theloneliest place for me you can imagine. Ifyou dont make friends easily, or are oddin any way, expect to live in your ownthoughts. A few professors at the time stillran their classrooms like court rooms. All Iwas trying to do was keep my sanity, yet Iwas berated and scolded, sometimes in frontof other students – all the more painful giventhat the classroom had become the only es-cape left to me from the all – pervadingsmugness of the Greek scene. I barely hungon through summer school but did manageto graduate in 1980. Twenty – four yearslater the nightmares continue – always witha crush of assignments to complete, neverenough time, and a court martial pending. Now, against my wishes, my daughter is setto attend Wake Forest. I try to keep an openmind, things change, but maybe not.

, English (Alumni) - MaleWake Forest was the perfect school for me.I grew up in a lower – middle – class family, went to public school, was heavily involvedin the arts, and Wake was still the perfectschool for me. I don’t think I could’ve hada better experience anywhere else. This isnot to say that Wake is a good choice foreveryone. It is a small, private, formerlySouthern Baptist, predominantly conserva-tive, tobacco – funded school.Wake’s administration tends to operate likea corporation with its own best interests atheart, rather than an institution of higherlearning where the students’ best interest isat heart. Because it is private and operateslargely on endowment funds, the muckety –mucks can seem like heartless, greedy bas-tards. But when I needed help or neededmoney, there was always someone to go to

bat for me.The social scene does largely revolve aroundGreek life. Greek life at Wake is apparentlyquite different than it is at other universi-ties. Greek organizations have a lounge oncampus, where their parties are held. Thesetend to be on the small side, and are mon-itored closely by the school. This is not tosay that they can’t get out of hand or thatyou aren’t going to have fun, but a seriesof hazing incidents and injuries lead the ad-ministration to crack down recently. I didnot belong to a Greek organization – I hadtoo much going on with theatre and bandand we had our own parties.Wake’s population is largely homogenous. There are plenty of wealthy, white, conser-vatives. I grew up a poor, white, liberalIn my freshman dorm, out of thirty girls,I probably received the most need – basedfinancial aid. It could be disheartening tohear that some of the girls were going ski-ing for the weekend, or that daddy had justbought them a new BMW SUV for theirbirthday, but I’ve never wanted to learn howto ski (too cold) and I wouldn’t take an SUVif it was offeredClass size and professor – to – student ra-tio was important to me when choosing auniversity. I think Wake excels in this area. Most of my professors were not just giftedin their fields but also interested in theirstudents and willing to offer guidance. Ofcourse there were some brilliant people whosimply could not teach; this is the case atany school. I recently asked four professorsfor references; after five years, all of themremembered me and were happy to give areference. The library, contrary to what others havesaid, is an excellent resource. It can be alittle confusing in the beginning – the oldReynolds wing and the new Wilson wingare organized in entirely different ways. Youwill definitely be able to find everything youneed to research any paper the universitycan throw at you, and if Wake doesn’t have

the book, inter – library loan can get it foryou Besides, Wake issues laptops to all itsstudents now, and if you can’t find whatyou’re looking for online, it probably doesn’texist. The best experience I had at Wake, and oneI suggest you take advantage of if you can,was studying abroad. Wake has houses inLondon, Vienna and Venice, and programsin many other countries. If Wake doesn’thave your program, it IS possible to ex-change with another university for credit.Friends of mine went to Ireland and Aus-tralia with other universities and transferredcredits. I went to the Worrell House in Lon-don with fourteen other students, a profes-sor, and her family. The BEST experienceof my life. It wasn’t the immersion experi-ence you might have if you don’t live in aWake house, but it was right for me.I found my friends in theatre and band andLondon, or through friends of friends. I hadthe same roommate for three years and westill keep in touch, as do several of the peo-ple with whom I was in London.I tend to think that if you aren’t havinga good time at Wake, you’re not tryinghard enough. That said, some people werenot meant to flourish at a small university. There are edgy, risky, avant – garde thingsgoing on at Wake, but you might have tolook harder to find them. And under yourroommate’s spoiled exterior, there might bea frightened, freaked – out little girl witha self – esteem issue who would really ap-preciate it if you showed her how to doher laundry or shop for groceries. On theother hand, she might really be a cluelessidiot, but you’re only stuck with her for asemester, and you don’t HAVE to spend ev-ery waking moment in your room

, English (Alumni) - MaleThe WFU network definitely helped.Alumni want to hire other alumni, and theWFU degree is very respected when you aretrying to get a job.

It was the best 4 years I could have spent ata school.

/ Physics - FemaleWhat makes me university good? Well, that’s easy. . . NOTHING. I go to a churchoff campus and that’s about the only posi-tive experience I ever have here. There is alot people should know before they decide tocome here, stuff that isnt in the promotionalbooklets. People should know that if youare Greek, drunk, a whore, stupid, shallow, arrogant, and closed – minded, then this isprobably not the school for you. Oh yeah,it also helps to be a rich, white, conserva-tive. The students are not friendly, the areexcluding and judgemental and do not likeanyone who is not exactly like them. Thefaculty do not ”get to know their students”,they do not invite you to their house fordinner, about half your professors probablywont know your name unless you make aspecial effort to get to know them. Manyof them come to class totally unprepared tolecture and just seem to spit out unorga-nized babble. Dont get me wrong, there aresome good professors here, and they do gen-erally know their subject, many of them justtend to be very poor teachers. In my experi-ence, some professors tend to grade unfairly, reducing grades simply because the studentdoes not express the professor’s opinion inhis or her paper, regardless of how well itis written. The food options are terrible, there is no ”regular” food generally avail-able like one might expect at home. Thereis no group dining, everyone eats wheneverthey want whereever they want, often alone. There really isnt anyplace for students just”hang out” except when studying, there isnothing to do on campus besides homework. There is no sense of community, and dep-site having the number one basketball teamthis year, there is little sports enthusiasmcompared to other schools. The library isterrible, it’s a popular study place but itis impossible to do research there. Fresh-

man are totally isolated in their own dormstwo quads across campus from all the upper-classmen. It is as though everything aboutthe university was specifically designed sothat people will have as few ”real” friendsas possible, and this is what tends to hap-pen. Also, they have a long list of mind-less divisional requirements that will take uptwo years of your time and which you basi-cally have NO CHOICE in and will probablybe bored to death and this leaves you littletime to take classes you are really interestedin, which is what college is supposed to beabout. Oh, and it’s not really as hard aspeople say it is, ”work forest” and all thatstuff. Probably not much more work thanyou had in high school and most of the peo-ple here arent very intelligent and are drunkmany mornings which is why they complain.I am an agreeable person and I have alwaysconsidered myself one of the happiest peo-ple I knew. However, since coming to WakeForest, I have been miserable nearly everyday. I have never hated a place so much asI hate Wake Forest. I constantly regret com-ing here and given the chance to do it overagain, I would go almost anywhere but here.In fact I plan to transfer as soon as I get theopportunity. Basically, I strongly advise ev-eryone against coming here, unless of courseyou are an arrogant, close – minded, slutty, conservative idiot (not that all conservativesare idiots). Or unless you just enjoy beingmiserable.

• Physics - MaleSchool is very small and homogenous. Grad-ing sucks balls. Winston – Salem sucks.Academics are pretty good.

/ Psychology - Female*No Diversity*Not a accepting environment for minori-ties, homosexuals, or economically disad-vanted*Grade Deflation

, Psychology - FemaleI had a very positive undergrad experienceat WFU. I learned to study in undergrad-uate school. If you are looking for a qual-ity education with top – notch professors, Iwould look to this school. If you are look-ing to go out every night and party it up,I might look elsewhere. You are going tolearn and grow at WFU, but you will havefun too. It is more of a party on the weekendkind of school – if you want to succeed.

, Psychology - MaleDon’t come here if you are trying tofind yourself while borrowing for tuition. You need to be clear minded about yourstrengths and weaknesses. You can beindividualistic, but then something aboutthe place tends to give everyone the stampof sameness. It seems as if every studentis always managing his environment forthe next deadline. If the mind rages aboutanything – sex, politics, equality – it doesso quietly, in reasoned ways. True, I haveplenty of fun with irony, but a real live orgynow and then would help.

/ Religion/Religious (Alumni) - MaleAh, the Forest. If I could take it all back Iwould, and here’s the kicker. . . I’m not say-ing this out of bitterness. Wake Forest is theperfect place for some people. Usually thesepeople are wealthy white guys with an affin-ity for pastel colored Duck Head shorts andBMW Z series vehicles. Racial jokes aside,in all seriousness, Wake is where positiverace interaction comes to die. The dividebetween whites and minorities is so thickit’s almost palpable. Don’t bother trying tomake any changes either, Administration isseriously afraid of the word ”racist.” Iron-ically enough, Wake becomes like an am-bulance chasing lawyer when it comes tominority recruitment. Those poor suckersnever know what they’re getting into. Thestudents that have a positive experience atWake are those who ’fit in.’ If you’re a trou-

blemaker or even the slightest bit of a freespirit, than you may want to consider an-other institution. But I’m not unreasonable. Wake For-est, educationally, is unparalleled (unlessof course we’re discussing Harvard, Yale,Amherst, or our favorite depressant downthe road....Duke). Despite desperately com-peting with said schools (usually throughGPA deflation), Wake’s rigorous cirriculumand very, very brilliant professors are almostworth the $36,000 grand. Do yourself a fa-vor though, and skip the meal plan. Finally we get to the social lives of students, meaning of course that the aforementionedwhite boys who are member of PiKA willundoubtedly have a social life. Many otherstudents are not so fortunate. However,Winston – Salem is a diamond in the rough. There is a jazz bar, an independent projectspace, and the ever – popular Avenue of theArts. Most of this cultural entertainmentis downtown, so a car is necessary for thosewho prefer more intellectual pursuits to theinfamous Wednesday night frat paries. My advice to anyone considering the Forestis simple; It’s a good place to go if you’vebeen rejected from Duke.

/ History/Histories (art history/etc.) - MaleMy experience at Wake Forest had its goodand evil. Academics were great, I loved itacademically. There were some really intel-ligent students as well, but due to the socialenvironment, I don’t believe they fulfilledtheir potential.Socially, Wake Forest was depraved; in myopinion. The Frat scene is huge and disturb-ing to say the least. All the fraternities atWake Forest do is sit around, talk about eat-ing pizza, raping women, and drinking beer.It was disgusting and almost everyone has tobe a part of it in order to have a life. Allthe children are of Southern Aristocrats andI am from the west and the school was dis-turbing at times. If I had to choose a schoolagain, I would go to UC Santa Barbara over

Wake. Also, Wake students think Wake iscompeting with Duke, but thats never thecase. Wake is a crappy wannabe of Duke.

✸ History/Histories (art history/etc.) - MaleWell, Wake Forest is for a certain type ofstudent and person. I came from Califor-nia here, and the results seemed to be dis-astrous. Firstly, I must say that my aca-demic experience was top notch and unfor-gettable. There are a lot of really smartstudents here. But, the social situation attimes can drag smart students into it andruin their academic experience. The schoolis fraternity dominated, masculinity rulessupreme. If you’re not Greek, then you’rea nobody. And frankly, the fraternities atWake Forest disgusted me. They are full ofsouthern aristocrat kids who just sit aroundall day and talk about eating pizza, rapingwomen, and drinking beer. It scared me alot. The surrounding area isn’t as bad aspeople say it is, but the university is a lotlike a dark mysterious place although thegrounds are beautiful in a way.

• Undecided - MaleWake Forest has its ups but there are manydowns. Lets begin with the ups. The classesare small, professors are approachable andfriendly, the weather is warm, acc athleticsare really good, and the degree has value. Now the downs. . . there is very little diver-sity and if that is important to you do notcome here. People are typical of a privateschool, there are cool people here, but alothave tried so hard to conform that the placeis homogeneous. After the first semester pplbecome cliquish and self segregate. There isnothing to do in Winston Salem, the girlsare bitches, the school is overrun by greekswho have the worst parties (on campus donot serve beer anymore), and the grades aredeflated like hell. To make good grades youneed to constantly talk to profs and thisgets tiresome. Overall, if you are sociallyept dont come here, if you are a shleteredrich kid come, but if you are in between its

a risk. youll love it or hate it. I pretty muchhate it.

, Undecided - FemaleWake’s social life is awesome. There are alot of parties to go to and everybody is ex-tremely nice and polite. Sure, you run intoan asshole every now and then but how isthat different at any other school? The badthing is that the work here is insane. ”WorkForest” overloads us with so much. But ifyou make an effort most professors are will-ing to work with you to bring your gradesup. If you can balance your time betweenpartying and studying you’ll do fine. Themotto here is ”work hard, party hard”.The campus is gorgeous, professors are nice, and the school itself has a very good repu-tation. If you’re willing to work hard, I’dsuggest you come here.

, Other - MaleWhile I was a law student at Wake Forest,I was Hall Director of one of the undergrad-uate dormitories for 2 years. I feel I got areally good outsider’s look into undergrad-uate life at Wake Forest, and I can say thatI wish I had attended Wake when I was anundergraduate. In some of the other surveys, people havewritten that the average Wake student iswealthy, Republican, and White. Thesethings are true, but there are other universi-ties where the average student is liberal andurbane; being Republican and white doesn’tmean that it is a bad place any more thanbeing liberal and urbane (actually, as a Re-publican myself, I might dispute how gooda liberal place is, j/k). Anyhow, it just de-pends on for what you are looking. The average Wake student might be theabove – mentioned things, but he is alsofriendly, engaged, smart, and upbeat. WhenI was a new hall director, I was worried thatI would have all manner of problems control-ing my building – after all, there was oneof me to suprvise 287 students. Instead,I found the students to be likeable people

with whom I could easily to work. Theygenerally seemed HAPPY at Wake. Thiswas so refreshing, because where I did myundergrad (Johns Hopkins) NOBODY washappy with his experience. The students DO work hard at Wake Forest, but it was not nearly as excessive or obses-sive as what I saw at Johns Hopkins. I don’tthink it got too much in the way of the stu-dents enjoying themselves. The social scene is heavily Greek domi-nated. . . and I can understand why the peo-ple who were not in fraternities or sororitieswould feel excluded from alot of the campussocial scene. If you don’t like a Greek atmo-sphere, Wake might not be for you; however,I did not tend to see the boarishness oftenassociated with fraternties.I don’t think that Wake Forest lacks di-versity in the dictionary sense of the word;there are people from every region of thecountry and from many places in the world. However, it is not ”diverse” in the politicallycorrect sense of the word; you are not goingto find a dailygripe session for lesbian eskimos to talkabout how they fell oppressed by the pa-triarchy and corporate America. In the PCsense of the word, however, what you actu-ally have isthe same left – wing orthodoxy which per-vades so much of higher education. This isrefreshingly absent amoung the Wake stu-dent body. Rather, at Wake, you will find amix of people who mirror an upscale versionof America as a whole;people from different backgrounds with dif-ferent viewswho generally get along with one another.Wake is very cloistered – Winston – Salemis a neat little town, but really isn’t a collegetown. There is no college village surround-ing campus. When I lived on campus, I leftonce a week to go to synagogue and the gro-cery store. Sometimes, older Wake studentswill go down to Burke Street to attend oneof Winston – Salem’s 3 bars. Students also

go off – campus for Church (Wake ForestBaptist Church is so watered down and PCthat very few students, or anybody else forthat matter, attend.) Besides that, there isvery little town – gown interaction.Wake Forest is not a granola – eating tree– huggers paradise, by any strecth of theimagination. If you are looking to get someZen – like revelation out of college, this isnot the place for you. However, if you wanta rigorous education taught by motivatedprofessors, classmates whoare friendly and upbeat, and beautiful sur-roundings thinkstrongly about Wake.

• Communications (Alumni) - MaleI would highly recommend Wake to intel-ligent high school students who are look-ing for a nurturing place to grow, an aca-demically rigorous environment, and a com-munity that offers interesting classes, fasci-nating travel, and numerous volunteer ac-tivities. Wake Forest is an incredible placeThe academics are first rate and much isexpected but the professors quickly becomefriends and are extremely accessible. Ittruly is a small school with all the resourcesof a large research university. There is an ac-tive Greek community but those who choosenot to pledge are welcome at Greek eventsand have vibrant social lives. I found myfirst job out of college through a Wake grad-uate and continue to enjoy the benefits ofthe strong WFU alumni network. I treasuremy time at Wake – the skills I learned andthe amazing people I learned with and from.If you have the opportunity to become a De-mon Deacon I urge you to take it.

, Communications - FemaleWhen I was in High School Wake Forest wasthe only college I wanted to attend. I amcompletly satisfied with my experience andwould highly recommend it today. The stu-dents are friendly, the facilities are amazing, and the course work is rigorous. An excel-lent combination. However, Wake is rather

homogenous. The students are mostly con-servative republicans and are appropriatelydeemed ”preppy.” This can be comfortingto some traveling away from their home en-viornment. Wake has amazing study abroadprograms as well. I would encourage all stu-dents to look at the houses Wake owns inmany European countries. They are amaz-ing in every aspect.

, Communications (Alumni) - MaleI loved my time at Wake Forest, but I agreeit isn’t for everyone. As a minority student,I never felt out of place or like I was be-ing ignored, but I think many of my friendsdid. The racial make up of WF was some-thing I was used to because my high schoolwas not that diverse. I was thrilled to seeother black students with high aspirationsand academic achievements; it was a totallydifferent group of peers than what I dealtwith in high school and that impressed me.I struggled academically at first because Iwas not used to having to put in the timethat I had to in order to make good grades.I almost lost my scholarship, but the Learn-ing Center was a lifesaver (and money savefor my parents). WF provides a lot of re-sources for its students if they choose totake advantage. All too often I believe stu-dents wait for people to coax them into do-ing what needs to be done. Students need totake some initiative and ask for the help be-fore the matter gets out of hand. Studentsalso need to realize, whereas in high schoolthey may have been the top dog, when youcome to Wake, there is always going to besomebody smarter than you, more outgo-ing than you, driving a nicer car than you, skinnier than you (boy is this ever true );but I think it gave me a greater apprecia-tion of the unique differences in my peers.Even the frat guys that were highly annoy-ing with their one sided way of thinking con-tributed in some positive form to the climateof campus. I loved my experience, abso-lutely LOVED IT and I feel a great debt

to Wake for what the university and com-munity gave to me. I was that out of placegirl in high school, yet I managed to fit in atWake. My parents would agree that it wasworth every penny and is still worth everypenny that I give back as an alum.

• Economics (Alumni) - MaleWake Forest was an excellent choice for me18 years ago. The professors and classeswere generally excellent. I don’t doubt thatthey are still excellent. Unfortunately, thesticker price of the school has outpaced itsreputation. It saddens me to say that atthose prices, I’ll send my children to Har-vard (same price, better reputation) or UVA(better price, same reputation). I’m aneconomist, I will pay for a human capital in-vestment (or reputation) but not consump-tion.

• Economics (Alumni) - MaleWake Forest has provided me with a tremen-dous experience that I continue to utilize inmy career. Wake does demand a lot fromits students – GPA’s quite often are evidentthat the demands of the school can be veryrigourous. In fact, my GPA fell victim tothe challenge of WFU, but in the end, I feelas though I am much better prepared for acareer as well as other challenges in the ”realworld.” I would encourage any student to, atleast, give Wake a look. It is not for every-one – truthfully, no college in the world isperfect for everyone. But those that come toWake and look for ways to become involvedand active members of the campus commu-nity will not be disappointed with their ex-perience. College is what you make of itand Wake offers the chance to create a life –changing, incredible experience if someonetakes advantage of what is available. Nomatter how grades turn out, a Wake For-est student will be prepared to take on anychallenge and probably complete that taskmore quickly and efficiently than most any-one else in a workplace.

• Economics - MaleO.K. Ive had it with all these postings downon the frat/Greek scene at Wake. Do youreally think just because Im in a frater-nity I patronize everyone I meet. MaybeI do know what hell is more than you know.So you want me to prove it? What aboutseven years of Ritalin in elementary school?Or the priest who tried to rape me whenI was ten? Got that? Or must you meetmy gay Brother with AIDS? Kiss him? Ido. And FIVE student loans, not just one. Then a funeral for a friend every year sincehigh school. Yep. Seventy – five kin gassedat Auschwitz (thirty soap bars and seven-teen lamp shades) Now kicked off campustwice daring to smile (administrative ass-holes ). ,,,,,,,, Whats that? The end of theuniverse? Kiss my ass and bring anotherI PRONOUNCE YOU ALL BEER OFF ADUCKS BACK

, Economics - MaleI am just now starting my second semesterhere at Wake Forest. I can honestly say Ihave had the time of my life since cominghere last August. First of all, as everyoneesle has said, the Greek scene here is huge, but it’s not necessary to be in a frat/sororityto have friends or to have fun. I rushed fratslast month, but I’m not pledging anywhereright now. Even if you’re not interestedin becoming a frat brother, please considerrushing – it is an amazing timeSince cominghere, I have met some of the coolest peopleI know. Some people come across as a littlearrogant, but that is definitely not the norm.I come from a middle – class family fromNew England, which is definitely not abnor-mal here either. If you’re worried about be-ing a Northerner in the South, don’t worryabout it Besides the occasional talk about”How the Civil War Should Have Been”,you’ll be fine. The average Wake student isupper middle – class, white, moderate polit-ically (people are saying ”Conservative” justbecause our school is definitely more conser-

vative than other schools), and easy – going. Most people here work hard all week so thatthey can have an awesome time during theweekends. The workload is heavy, but itis bearable. There is so much opportunityhere that I still need to take advantage of,such as study abroad programs, etc. Thisschool is amazing, but it is definitely notfor everyone. If you’re high strung and noteasy – going, I’m pretty sure you won’t fitin – then again, where would you? We’rethe 2nd smallest Division 1 school, whichmeans you will see the basketball team al-most daily, and probably get to know a fewof them (well). The athletes are mixed inthe residence halls with everyone else. ACCbasketball games are incredible. My onlycomplaint about Wake is the food. It getsboring quickly. But, if you’re a prospec-tive, this is nothing to worry about becausethe school is completely changing our din-ing system over the summer of ’05. Everystudent is given an amazing computer dur-ing Freshman orientation, and then again atthe start of their Junior year. This place isawesome

, Economics - MaleWake’s an unbelievable school. A schoolwhere you will go home for the weekend andafter being home for a few hours will alreadystart missing the life at Wake. Great time ata great school that has a great reputation.

/ Economics - MaleWake Forest is a first – class private uni-versity. Everything is upscale, except theadministration and about 20 percent of theprofessors. There are a lot of know – nothing, affir-mative action – type administrators. Theseare mostly deans or assistant deans and aremostly women. They are only superficiallypolite and very quickly turn defensive andnasty when they do something stupid, whichis quite often, and you happen to point itout. They have a serious attitude prob-lem toward students and parents. They act

like they are working at some state univer-sity with 20,000 faceless students whose par-ents are paying peanuts for tuition. Let meput it this way: Customer service is not intheir vocabulary. Picture the people you seeworking for the U.S. Post Office, and youwill get the idea.About 1 in 5 professors ought to be fired flatout for incompetence. The trouble is, theycannot be fired because they really have nojob at Wake Forest. These are the so –called visiting instructors who drift in andout over the course of a year or so. Theyteach mainly lower level core courses to clue-less freshman, but they still do a lot of dam-age before they disappear. What they repre-sent is a sort of stealth TA force. They allowWake Forest to technically claim that onlyprofessors teach courses, but these driftersare not much better than TAs. So WakeForest saves another buck at the expense ofits students and parents.

, Political Science (Alumni) - MaleSome things never change. Many bright, aspiring students who go to Wake getwashed out of the competition for profes-sional school, as I was for law school. Thuswe form our own clique of tacit knowledgeabout our plight. At age 22, compelled tosalvage the remains of the day, we usuallytack on a teaching certificate around the 2ndsemester of our senior year.

• Political Science (Alumni) - MaleA Wake Forest degree is a real albatross. For starters, you will probably graduate ow-ing money, and how do you plan to pay itback? Teaching school? In that case, ev-eryone who attended a state school alreadyhas an advantage on you, socially & finan-cially. Then, to the extent you took up theuniversity challenge to be a renaissance manor woman , spending all your freshest hourscuddled up with the books, to that extentyoud better learn to rap well. Youll be for-ever the straight man, always hat in handto fad and fashion. Have dignity amidst the

rabble? You arrogant bitch. Your resumenot always on the make? What happened tohim? (But in your case say that with a veryknitted brow.) Oh, and what do you call aWake graduate who becomes a beach bum?A Republican beach bum, always. God, wejust cant help ourselves.

• Political Science - FemaleWake is an amazing school if you are will-ing to look past its flaws – yeah, it’s Greek.Yeah, it’s pretty white. Yeah, it’s prettywealthy. But there are plenty of people onscholarship or with loans, plenty of kids whoare thinking and working outside the box, tons of brilliant minds gathering togetherand speaking with elevated vocabularies –it’s an intellectual place, minus the bingedrinking nights.Socially, it can be quieter than most of itspeer institutions – if you don’t want to workhard, you don’t want to be at Wake. But forall my classes, the work has been worth it.Even the little crappy papers have taughtme something, even if it’s just how to editmy writing more concisely. Anyway, I’mnot Greek but tons of my friends are and Ihave a great social life without doing manysorority/frat functions at all. As long as youget involved in a non – Greek organization, you’re going to meet fun, interesting, excit-ing, perhaps even artsy, less typical wakestudents. They exist. And even people thatyou try to pidgeon – hole into the rich bitchstereotype pop out of the box that you’veput them in.If you enjoy working hard and drinkingharder, don’t mind rich people and highfashion, and appreciate hard working pro-fessors, go to wake. As simple as that.

, Political Science - MaleWake Forest University is a place of historyand a place of pride. Students not only re-ceive an excellent education, but form life– long bonds with both other students andfaculty. A reason why alumni continue tosupport this University so strongly is be-

cause of the community atmosphere. We arethe 2nd smallest division I school, but wemake up for that with large resources and alove for the students. Our students, facultyand alumni take pride in being a part of theWake Forest community. It’s a great school,I encourage you all to try and apply.

✸ Art & Design Department (Alumni) - MaleHi, if you’re sonsidering Wae Forest, hereare some things to consider. Some are smallsome are major. Just read on and you’llsee. I’ll stat by saying, be wary of the Artdepartment. I learned a lot, and I spent allthe time I could on those classes. I likedmany of the classes there, especially JohnPickels classes and Paiges classes. A cou-ple of the profs are assholes. There are acouple of saints too though(Pickel(photo)and Paige(painting)). Don’t take too manycredits in your major. This will only piss offthe gods who regulate such things. It’s bestto just stay low and take the classes youretold you need. Any form of overachieve-ment not business or math oriented willbring yucky reparations that you just don’twant. There is no parking here, or so you’reparking tickets will soon suggest. If youreally want some student diversity in yourcollege experience then by all means. . . nothere. No. What we have the most of atWake are skinny rich white girls. Don’t getme wrong they are plenty easy on the eyes;they just tend to be quite stuck up. Themany white guys just tend to be close –minded and immature, (must be the richfamily thing). There are few black studentshere. In fact the University has actuallydeemed them obsolete and is phasing outthat group. We have tons of republicanshere, so if you’re one of those, come on downand meet the upper crust of the white trashcommunity. The campus is a beautiful one.It is well manicured and has lots of nicetrees. Though the grass glows in the darkand the trees grow at an unholy rate. It is ina good location, close to the NC Mountains

and the Blue Ridge Parkway. The school’sbasketball team is wonderful as is the ACCcompetition. The biggest warning I have togive is: Do not come here if you are lookingmainly for a great social life, ESPECIALLYif you are neither rich, white, stuck up, ofbad taste, and have an open mind aboutanything other than sports and drinking andmoney. Do attend if your top priorities aremoney, money and more of that. Most thatI have talked to note that any real, deeplasting social life is hard fought and littlerewarding at this school. Something aboutthe school and its aura just make it veryhard to develop and maintain lasting, truefriendships (esp. outside the frats and soror-ities). But I shouldn’t complain too muchmore, I did however find my soul mate herelast semester. And yes, she’s white, butno she’s neither skinny, rich, blonde, stupid, nor close – minded like 87% of the girls here.Good Luck

/ Finance - FemaleI constantly think about how bad of a deci-sion I made in coming here. I should havespent more time researching schools. Aca-demics are fine, and although that is themost important thing it is not enough. Thepeople here are horrible, and the surround-ing city isnt much better. So many peopleare snobby, sheltered, and close minded. Noone cares about you. The social life is cen-tered around fraternities and sororities thatclosely resemble cults. I have never beenmore lonely in my life. Everyone is the samehere. I feel like I am in the twilight zone.

How to ’get in’

• BiologyQuite Bright - Male ( ACT: 34 SAT: 1340)Work hard, all through high school and re-ally place all your efforts into the essays theypour over them.

• Business - Management and AdministrationQuite Bright - FemaleI believe that Wake is still a competitiveadmissions challenge. • Business - Management and AdministrationQuite Bright - Male ( SAT: 1450)It is hard yet very rewarding and offersmany things that huge universities have.

• Business - Management and AdministrationQuite Bright - Male ( SAT: 1470)Applying early decision will help yourchances significantly. To have a realisticchance for acceptance you should havea minimum 3.75 GPA and 1250 SAT.I would also suggest working into youressays why you want to come to WFU andwhy you consider yourself an asset for thecommunity of Wake. Good luck

• EducationBright - Female ( SAT: 1330)Of course it all depends on what they’relooking for (it helps to be minority becausethey’re definitely trying to expand that)Good SAT scores (the cutoff bottom scorekeeps going up)Essays that show that you are well –rounded and desiring to further the ”Pro

Humanitate” motto; that’s the kind of stu-dent they seek

• EnglishQuite Bright - Female ( SAT: 1270)Head of Honor Counci; newspaper ed-itor; creative writer; officer of threeclubs/organizations; published articles inhometown newspaper. I did not play sports, nor did I make great SAT scores, but I wentto a renowned private school and graduatedwith a 4.0. . . other than thay, I have no idea.I think that I wrote really good essays andI knew that one of my reccomendations wasincredible bc we received copies of them. Ido know however, that WAke is harder toget into now. The average SAT score hasgot up by 100 points in the past 4 years toa 1350. Oh, yeah and the number of high –school – student – body – presidents when Ientered was 200, whereas now the freshmenclass had double that. But, the encrouag-ing thing is that Wake truly admits peoplebased on their best qualities. My sat scoreswere a testament to that. They want peo-ple who think and feel, who want to learnabout life from the multiple perspectives ofthe liberal arts.

• EnglishBright - Female ( SAT: 1240)While admission into the school is becomingincreasingly difficult, I would simply recom-mend expressing your desire to attend theschool in your essays as best as you possiblycan. Also, community service is a plus. Andof course, there’s the basics like SAT (whichis getting higher and higher every year), andGPA are still important.

• PhysicsQuite Bright - Female ( SAT: 1440)i recommend you be white and conservative, also you should know that they seem to careabout you taking APs and stuff but theydont really give you much credit for it. um,i dont really think it’s that hard to get inhere, but I do advise against it.

• PhysicsBright - Male ( ACT: 29 SAT: 1240)I think there is like over 40% acceptancerate. apply early and you’ll get in

• PsychologyQuite Bright - Female ( SAT: 1310)*Strive for at least a 1200 on your SATs*Community Involvement*At least a 3.5 GPA*Really great personal statement ( they re-ally pay attention to those here )

• PsychologyQuite Bright - Female ( SAT: 1100)I worked hard in high school and had to takemy SATs twice – but it was all worth it. Ithink my grades and diverse background inmusic and theater helped my get into WFU– more than my SATs. Also, it is easier toget in as an in – state student.

• EconomicsSuper Brilliant - Male ( ACT: 31 SAT: 1400)Score well on standardized tests, but makesure your essay is great Good luck

• Economics- MaleIt is a difficult school to get into, yet it iswell worth it. Many kids turn down ivys toget into Wake. You have to work your ass offto get in and once you’re in you still have towork hard. The work is tough but everyoneat the school has the same mentality. . . workhard, play hard.

• EconomicsAverage - Male ( SAT: 1350)I had a high GPA and SAT scores. But myfather went to Wake Forest, so it was a snapgetting in.

• Political ScienceBright - Female ( ACT: 33 SAT: 1310)I took 6 APs in high school, but that’s nota must.I graduated 18 of 308, that’s not a must ei-ther.

I had a 1310 SAT, 33 ACT (which Wakedoesn’t even accept)I was in key club, french club, NationalHonor Society, played piano and severalsportsWhat you need is strong extracurriculars(not many, but a few and good positions)coupled with above – average academics. It doesn’t hurt to be (a) not white, (b) alegacy, (c) a good writer for the app essays,I’m sure that would push you over the edge.

• Political ScienceQuite Bright - MaleLocation(weather), sports(wake basket-ball), small classes, pretty girls, greatcampus, good college town.
