A GISD Maker Creator project can take many forms. Itmight be a simple idea for an invention to meet a needin the world (an automatic toast butterer?!?!) or anauthentic creative product. As a maker, students take a concept and turn it into areal prototype. This involves exploration, sharing ideaswith others, choosing and defining a project, planning, executing and refining a plan, and displaying thefinal product.

October 2015

Dear Parent/Guardian: Attached you will find the Confidential Student Report for your student’s 2015 State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR®). In Spring 2015, you should have received a copy of this report; however, the math results were not reported because the standard had not yet been set. The standard has been set and you now have a new report reflecting your student’s math scale score and performance level information. Additionally, Pearson (the vendor that produced and scored the 2015 STAAR for the Texas Education Agency) notified all districts that for the STAAR Grade 7 writing compositions, the personal narrative results were listed where the expository results should have been and vice versa. This error did NOT affect overall student performance (scale score and performance level) and does NOT affect students who took the STAAR A version of the test. If your student was affected by the error, the attached Confidential Student Report reflects the correct scores for these compositions. Sincerely,

Courtney Clearfield, District Testing Coordinator Research, Assessment & Accountability

DATE: October 2, 2015 TO: Principals & Campus Testing Coordinators FROM: Courtney Clearfield District Testing Coordinator Research, Assessment & Accountability RE: Update to the 2015-2016 Testing Calendar _______________________________________________________________________ The purpose of this memo is to notify you of an update to the 2015–2016 Student Assessment testing calendar. The revised calendar will be posted to the Texas Education Agency’s (TEA) website at http://www.tea.texas.gov/student.assessment/calendars/, the RAAD Intranet website http://home.garlandisd.net/RAAD, and the Garland ISD website http://www.garlandisd.net/departments/raad/testing_calendar.asp. This calendar reflects changes to testing dates previously communicated to school districts. To meet legislative requirements, the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR®) grades 4 and 7 writing assessments will be redesigned so they can be completed in one four-hour administration. In the current school year, the STAAR grades 4 and 7 writing assessments will be administered on Tuesday, March 29, 2016.

Our department is committed to adequately train these volunteers to provide interpretation and translation to Garland ISD campuses, students, and the families whose first language is not English. TIVCO volunteers will provide interpretation for parent to teacher meetings, parent information meetings, and extra-curricular activities. We need your assistance in identifying possible TIVCO volunteers. The qualification for volunteer interpreters is to be proficient in both languages and convey information from the English language to a target language and vice versa. Volunteers must thoroughly understand the importance of communicating accurate information without adding, modifying, or omitting any part of a message. Click on the session to register for the training in SCHED. Genre Connections: October 6, October 15, November 5 The focus of this professional learning session is to move students beyond simple genre identification and immerse readers in what makes each genre truly unique. Participants will look at the text structure for each genre and be given strategies to support not only the reading of the different genres, but the writing within each type of genre, as well. Make It Real: October 7, October 14, November 4 In this session, participants will take an in depth look at informational text. Participants will be provided with strategies to help their students identify distinctive characteristics of this genre in order to make inferences, draw conclusions, and analyze informational text. Dive Deep: Session 1 October 13, Session 2 November 3 Dive Deep is a three day training to help teachers guide students through the writing process. Teachers will be asked to use the strategies presented in each session with their students before they come to the next session of the course. DATE: October 2, 2015 TO: Area Directors All Elementary Principals All Elementary Assistant Principal Instructional Design Facilitators FROM: Mida Milligan, Ed.D., Director of Curriculum and Instruction Aibeth Laugisch, PK-5 Bilingual Education Coordinator RE: Process to Request Support from Bilingual Education (BE) ISTs _______________________________________________________________________ The BE coordinator position and the bilingual ISTs are now a part of the curriculum and instruction department. This team is working diligently to provide Spanish Language Arts curriculum and translations for our bilingual teachers. The BE ISTs have also been at campuses supporting new bilingual teachers during the first six weeks of school. As we move into the second six weeks, principals and IDF liasions may now request assistance for additional bilingual teacher support. The process for requesting bilingual teacher support from the BE ISTs has been created to provide the best classroom support for our district’s bilingual teachers. This new request process will allow us to gather detailed information about areas of need in order to best assist and fulfill those needs, in addition to providing feedback after campus/classroom visits. Please use the following process when requesting assistance for your bilingual teachers:

1. A request form must be filled out at http://goo.gl/forms/kKHoZ9hQZU 2. The database will be checked daily by Aibeth Laugisch, BE Coordinator. 3. Requests are organized by campus and prioritized by need. 4. Requests are assigned to a BE IST. 5. The BE IST will fulfill request. 6. After the BE IST provides support, a feedback form will be emailed to the

classroom BE teacher, with a copy to requestor (principal, assistant principal, IDF liaison, etc.).

If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact Aibeth Laugisch at 972-487-3990 or [email protected].
