“Together We Aim Higher”
Principal Message
Dear Waikele Families,
Welcome back from Spring Break! April will be busy with grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 taking the statewide Smarter
Balanced Assessments (SBA) throughout the entire month. Families: Please help our students get a good
night’s rest, eat a healthy breakfast, and come to school on time, so they can do their best!
Thank you to our PCNC Facilitator, Kiana Moore, for organizing our 1st Annual Cha Cha Challenge Fun Run!
Special thanks also goes out to our NSSC/Performance Monitoring Team (PMT) Navy partners for creating and
monitoring the two obstacle courses, and to our Waikele PTSO for sponsoring the bright yellow t-shirts worn by
everyone that day.
We are also excited to share that we have a few capital improvement projects coming our way. 1) Waikele will
be getting photovoltaic (PV) panels installed, 2) Thanks to PTSO, we have a new LED marquee that will go up
and replace our existing marquee in the front of the school by the bus shelter, and 3) Our cafeteria will be
extended to include indoor staging, which will better support all of our wonderful performing arts events, like
our recent 5th grade opera. These are BIG projects and all are currently in the design/scope phase of the
planning process. Look for more information in the months ahead!
Thank you to everyone for continuing to support our school community. The aforementioned school wide
events and improvement projects would not be possible without your help and support.
Sincerely,
Stacy Kawamura
CISL Vice Principal

APRIL – Month of the Military Child PURPLE UP! Day -Friday, April 15, 2016
April marks the Nation’s “Month of the Military
Child,” a time to honor and celebrate military-
connected children and youth. Wear something
PURPLE on April 15th as a visible way to show
support and recognize military kids for their
strength, sacrifices and continued resilience. Purple
is the color that symbolizes all branches of the
military, as it is a combination of Army green,
Marine red, and Coast Guard, Navy and Air Force
blue. Wearing purple is also a military expression
that symbolizes loyalty to a joint service
operation. We hope everyone will take this
opportunity to recognize and celebrate Hawaii’s
young heroes.
School Community Council (SCC)
Waikele School Uniforms?
The Waikele School Community Council (SCC)
is continuing its consideration of adopting a school
uniform t-shirt. Here’s some background about the
SCC’s efforts involving school uniforms:
In 2013, the previous SCC polled parents, faculty,
and students about the possibility of adopting
school uniform t-shirts. Most were in favor of the
idea.
In 2014, the SCC welcomed questions and
comments and even began exploring possible
uniform designs and vendors before the idea stalled
with the end of the school year.
In March 2015, the matter of school uniforms was
raised at an SCC Community Meeting. As a result,
the new SCC revisited the idea at their May 2015
council meeting.
In November 2015, the SCC presented the matter at
another SCC Community Meeting, providing the
school community with another opportunity for
input.
Last month, at our first SCC meeting of 2016, the
council decided to keep the matter alive by
continuing our exploration and by creating more
opportunities for all members of our school
community to contribute their input and express
their opinions about the idea.
The next opportunity to do so will be at our next
SCC Community Meeting
Thursday, May 5, 6:00 – 7:00pm
Hale Kukui.
Mark your calendars and plan to attend this
important Community Meeting, if you’d like to
learn more about the possibility of adopting school
uniform t-shirts at Waikele Elementary.
Food Shopping Checklist and Nutrition Facts
Label Reading
Food Shopping Checklist (Family)
Plan your meals before you go.
Make a list and bring it with you! Shopping
apps for smart phones may be helpful.
Don’t go hungry! Research shows you tend to
purchase higher-calorie foods when hungry.
Shop the perimeter. Most junk food is located in
the center of the store at eye-level.
Buy mostly fresh, unprocessed foods.
Buy fruits and vegetables in season. When not
in season, frozen fruits and vegetables are good
choices if there are no added sugar and salt,
which you can find in the nutrition facts label.
Get the kids involved! (Elementary, Family)
Make the kids their own grocery list. Use
pictures and words to describe items they
are to find.
Have them cross off grocery list items.
Read the next item on the grocery list.
Have them help choose produce.
Get interactive. See examples below:
a. Who can spot something here that
would give you good energy for
sports?
b. Who can find three healthy things we
like to eat at breakfast?
c. Avoid foods with partially
hydrogenated fats (trans-fat) by
having your kids read the ingredient
list.

Physical Activity tips for the entire family Fitting in Fitness – With everything going on in life,
how do we fit in fitness? Here are some tips to include
fitness into your daily routine.
Make physical activity the first thing you do in
the morning. Start moving as soon as you wake
up!
Make plans around your physical activity (not
physical activity around your plans). Make
physical activity a priority and the rest will take
care of itself.
Involve the entire family in some kind of
physical activity. Studies show working out
with others increases the likelihood of success!
Set goals for distance, frequency, and intensity.
April’s fitness plan:
Select one of the following workout levels.
Track your start time and end time.
Novice – 35 Burpees
Beginner – 50 Burpees
Intermediate – 75 Burpees
Advance – 100 Burpees
Track the time it takes to do a set Burpees. Set a
goal and beat your initial time.
For more information on Burpees, google “How to
do a proper Burpee.”
Not quite ready for Burpees? Other activities such
as hiking or taking a walk in the neighborhood with
family is a good way to include physical activity into
your day.
Cha Cha Challenge Obstacle Fun Run
On Friday, April 1, our Waikele Warriors students
from Grades PreSchool through 6th, participated in
our 1st Annual “Cha Cha Challenge Obstacle
Fun Run”.
A huge mahalo goes out to our Navy military
partner, the Naval Submarine Support Command
(NSSC)/ Performance Monitoring Team (PMT).
This awesome team was responsible for putting
together both challenging obstacle courses in the
upper and lower campus grounds for our students.
Some staff members also participated in a round or
two. The students had so much fun they didn’t
want to stop for water.
Thank you very much to our many parent/guardian/
family volunteers who worked so hard making sure
the kids were hydrated both inside their body and
on their faces, and to the volunteers who made sure
the kids got their stickers or lap markers each time
they ran a lap. Mahalo to:
Marie Kawabata, Maureen Abe, Ron Oshiro,
Alberto Rivas, Ben Hilger, Dawni Faiola,
Judy Kim-Sugita, Linda Andersen & Tom,
Rachel Huggins, Shannon Quodala, Laura Shaw,
Shea Kataoka, Selene Sanchez, Rose Bombarda,
Wallace Kamikawa, Janice Mack, Karen Pacleb,
Mary Ronquilio, Kehau DeGuzman, Carolyne
Rafus, Joni & Allen Maluo, and Kiana Moore.
A huge mahalo to our Waikele PTSO for their
generous support in purchasing the bright yellow
t-shirts for every student and faculty member. We
all wore it proudly on the day of the event.
Mahalo nui loa to our very own Grade 5 student
Sarah Dao for the “Cha Cha Challenge Obstacle
Course” winning design! The t-shirt will be worn
proudly by students and staff in the years to come!
Mahalo also to Papa John’s Waipahu for their
generous discounted and donations of pizzas. And
to Kiana Moore, PCNC Facilitator for donations
of sandwiches, chips, and breakfast snacks.
Thank you very much to everyone who donated to
this schoolwide fundraiser. The students are the
beneficiaries of your generosity. Envelopes are still
being accepted through April 15.
