SHIRE ROAD NETWORK REPAIRS
Council has engaged the services of CORE Business Australia from Busselton to undertake an
assessment of roads and call tenders for their repairs across the Shire. This has been done in line with
Federal Government requirements. This is not Council’s first choice; we would like to have done the
work ourselves.
It is proposed that two tenders will be called: one for the section of shire north of the Arthur River –
Dumbleyung Rd and the other south of that road.
This process, which is totally out of Council’s control, will take time so we ask for patience from the
community. Most roads have been opened out but the proper repairs could take between 6 – 12
months.
Should anyone have any questions please contact the CEO at the Shire Office.
NEW RESIDENTS EVENING – 21ST MARCH 2017
The Shire will be hosting the New Residents Reception on the 21st of March 2017 from 5.30 at the Eric
Farrow Pavilion. Invitations were sent out on Friday 3rd of March 2017, if you are new to town and
you didn’t receive an invitation please contact Kirsty Simkins at the Shire Office.
THANK A VOLUNTEER DAY CHANGE OF VENUE AND DATE
The Thank a Volunteer day has been rescheduled to Friday 31st of March and will now be held at
the Eric Farrow Pavilion from 5.30 pm. RSVP to Donna George at the Shire office for catering
purposes.
SHIRE COMMUNITY BUDGET REQUESTS ARE NOW OPEN
If you are a Community Group or Organisation you can now make a submission for funding to
Council for the 2017/18 Budget. Applications must be received by 28 April 2017 and submission
forms are available from the Shire office. For more information and assistance please contact Tegan
Hall at the Shire.

Friends of the Wagin Library & Gallery News Our beautiful new screen has been installed! Thanks to John Parker for his quick, professional
construction. The screen features a pinup board for important notices and enables library staff to
process bulk book exchanges in a secure environment where they don’t inconvenience patrons.
Work is continuing on the provision of the computer to go in this space to enable staff to process
these exchanges without compromising the borrowing services to patrons.
All these improvements require funding so if you have any ideas for fundraising please come along
and share them with us. We intend to submit a request for funding via a Community Budget
Submission for more facilities and resources to improve the library experience for staff and patrons
alike.
If you would like to be more involved with our Library & Gallery we would love to see you at our next
meeting on Thursday March 30 at 4:30 in the Library. Ivy has been practising her special cake for
the occasion, so come along and sample it!
Some wise words from Ivy:
• Baby African elephants throw themselves headfirst into mud when they are angry
• When you blush, the lining of your stomach also turns red.
• Right-handed people, on average, live nine years longer than left-handed people.

Getting Your Act Together
Colin Chapman, the Director of Willcraft Estate
Planning will be visiting Darkan on Wednesday
March 22. The CRC will host two sessions with
one at 2pm and the other at 7pm. Colin will
talk about Enduring Power of Guardianship,
Enduring Power of Attorney and Advanced
Health Care Directives; information that you

your family. The afternoon session will include
a cuppa and the evening session a glass of
wine and cheese. There is no cost and you can
RSVP to the CRC on 9736 2000.
AusChem
Is anyone interested in doing their AusChem
training (old ChemCert) at the CRC? They
nearly have enough for the course to go
ahead so if you are interested please contact
the CRC on 9736 2000 ASAP.
Shire Welcomes New Planning &
Administration Trainee
The Shire has received funding from the
Royalties for Regions Country Local
Government Fund Youth Development
Program, which supports young people in
regional local governments through the
provision of traineeship and scholarship
opportunities, to appoint a new trainee.
Artamesia Barritt (Mesha) has been successful
in securing this position and in addition to her
studies will be providing administrative and
customer support with particular regards to
regulatory matters including environmental
health, planning, building, animal control, fire
control and emergency services and
occupational health and safety. Mesha joins
the Shire following completion of a Certificate
II in Business traineeship at the West Arthur CRC.
DrumMuster
The Shire is seeking expressions of interest for a
DrumMuster which is being organised for
March. To register your interest please ring the
Shire office on 9736 2222 with your contact
details and number of drums.
Discontinuation of Local Government Vehicle
Licensing Concessions
In January 2017, local government authorities
in Western Australia were notified that long
standing local government concessions on
vehicle licence fees and stamp duty would be
discontinued from the first licence expiry date
on or after 30 June 2017.
The direct cost to the Shire of West Arthur of this
policy change has been calculated as an
additional $44,907 for licensing fees and
approximately $17,991 for stamp duty on the
purchase of vehicles per annum. Combined
this equates to 4% of the Shire’s total rate
income. This will have a full and immediate
impact on the Shire’s 2017/18 budget and
subsequent budgets, and the cost cutting
and/or revenue raising measures required will
be extremely difficult.
Shire President Cr Ray Harrington has written to
all major political parties raising concerns this
policy change will have, which will impact rural
communities particularly hard because of the
vehicles and plant required to maintain rural
roads, and to seek the direct support of
political leaders to have the local government
vehicle licensing concessions reinstated.
At this stage it is not known whether the request
by this and other local government authorities
and the WA Local Government Association to
reinstate these concessions will be supported.
Decluttering Workshop
Do you need to regain control of you kitchen
cupboard, wardrobe, life! If so come along to
the West Arthur CRC’s Decluttering workshop
presented by Bernadette Malouf from “A
Clutterless Life.” The session is on Monday April
3 (note new date) at 10am and will cost only
$10 thanks to a big subsidy from the Waste
Authority and the West Arthur Tidy Towns
committee. RSVP to CRC on 9736 2000.

Jacaranda Blue by Joy Dettman
"Life in a small, conservative rural town in Australia is predictable and often boring, until one person's
unexpected actions ...
The consequences are startling and ripple through the community causing gossip, speculation and,
to those most closely affected, surprising reaction.
This book shows small town country life at its best. An interesting read."

Red sky ride stops in wagin by Kelly enright
The SolarisCare Red Sky Ride is an event led by local heroes committed to raising funds and
awareness for the SolarisCare Foundation, which provides free support services to WA cancer
patients and their families. The SolarisCare Foundation does not receive ongoing government
funding. As a community based health organisation they rely on the generosity of community
partnerships, support from the general public and fundraising events in particular the SolarisCare
Red Sky Ride.
On the last week of February each year, a group of cyclists will embark on an extraordinary journey
through the South West of WA travelling through the towns of Harvey, Dunsborough, Augusta,
Bridgetown, Wagin and York before returning to Perth. Good news section
by Ivy Bicknell
I would really like to begin a “Good News” section in our local Wagin Wool Press. I am sure people
need to know what great events are happening in our wonderful Wagin town. I had a telephone
call from a family member in the city this morning (9th March) to say that I had forgotten to remind
them about Woolorama. Shame on me.
People are always interested in happy events. Anniversaries, Births, Engagements, Marriages, Life
Stories. I have a few coming up to report in the next few issues of the Wagin Wool Press. Please assist
me with all the “Good News”, so I can pass it on to all the readers.
Day 6 - Bridgetown to Wagin: A rollercoaster of rough bitumen. This day is the highest increase
in altitude. Luckily the 37 degree day didn't eventuate. Posted to the Red Sky Ride Facebook
Page.

Ladies Bowling Club Notes By Bron Hegarty
A gorgeous warm day
greeted the ladies as they,
and their band of
supporters, travelled to
Darkan to play their final
game of Pennants. The
Community Bus was hired
for the day so everyone
could travel together.
Wagin are fortunate to
have excess Pennant
players so have never had
to play short.
Unfortunately, not all
Pennant players could
play the final match as
only eight were required.
But, good sportsmanship
prevailed and all ladies
came across for the
match.
Prior to this match, Wagin
were sitting on top of the
ladder and needed to win
one of the two rinks to ensure the Championship. Wagin were playing this final match against
Dumbleyung – never a team to be taken lightly.
Leanne Cook led one team with Karynne Robinson, Kerry Walker and Bron Hegarty while Gwen
Lathwell led her team of Coral Davies, Jenny Ewen and Fe Thompson.
Leanne’s team got off to a strong start and, although Dumbleyung came back in the second half,
were comfortable winners at 33-20.
Gwen’s team had a close match all day with the last end deciding the game in favour of Wagin
19-16.
Presentations were held following a delicious lunch hosted by Darkan and their band of helpers.
Wagin finished on top therefore winning the Pennant trophy.
Wagin also won two League events through the season (Fours and Triples), came 3rd in the Pairs and
runner-up in the Singles. These wonderful achievements led to Wagin also being awarded the
League Round Robin Shield.
Thank you to our supporters who came across and thanks to Kerry Walker and David Robinson for
making sure we all got there and home safely.
And thank you to Karynne Robinson who hosted our after after match celebrations!
Well done Wagin!!

Saltbush carnival By Sandra Moffatt
The Wagin Gun Club’s Saltbush Carnival is synonymous with flies, heat, sunburn and dust. Not this
year. The weekend saw 185mm of rain fall in the town with the majority of this on the Friday.
However, whilst this understandably stopped some shooters from attending a valiant bunch of 40
shooters shot over the weekend.
The first event of the carnival was the 25 Points Score Dohnbouillet Koonac Cup which was won by
Sam West with a 74/75. This is Sam’s second time winning the event – a feat which only Geoff Faulkes
had achieved in the past. The second event was the 25 Single Barrel Western Trap & Field Past
Members Trophy which was won by Neil Suckling with 38/39. Saw West and Leanne Storer flew the
Wagin flag by taking out graded prizes in this event. The final event of the Saturday was the 50DB
Betterwear Welding Special with William Freni-Lizzi taking the win with 100/101. Local superstars were
Sam West and Gary Smith who took out graded prizes. The wet, soggy but oh-so-brave shooters
were treated to a magnificent lamb spitroast feast fit for 80, so seconds, thirds and fourths were
heartily encouraged. Lizzy P made sure shooters hearts were warmed with their chosen beverages
over the evening.
Sunday morning welcomed shooters with no rain but a cold breeze – the weekend’s temperatures
never got above 18 degrees. A 10DB cash divide started the day with the attempts of warming
people up – this had mixed success. The main event for the day was the WA State Champion of
Champions Title. Geraldton superstar Gary Kelly claimed the victory with 145/150 after shooting off
with Narrogin’s David “Cowboy” Whitting. Leanne Storer from the mighty Wagin Gun Club shot
consistently to win the Ladies title with a 114/125. William Freni-Lizzi added another Junior State Title
to his collection after shooting 111/125. Another mighty Waginite in Jim West won the Veterans title
with 119/125. The final event of the day was the Norring Park 25 Continental. Glenn O’Brien finished
his carnival on a high by winning with 43/43. Clinton Smith, Leanne Storer and Pas Carbone were
the local heroes taking out graded prizes. With the Champion of Champions and Continental scores
combined it was time to award the annual Phillip Becker Memorial Cup which went to David
Whitting with 146/150 – a decent score in trying conditions!
The Wagin Gun Club’s unique event , the Woolgarre Top Gun, has been running since 2013. It sees
the top six from the high gun go out and shoot at a further 25 targets single barrel from 21m using
flash targets. This score is then added to their high gun score to award the top gun. The shooters
that made the cut this year were Josh Fleay, Neil Suckling, Gary Kelly, Trevor Morris, Sam West and
Giovanni Quaranta. Josh shot the event very impressively hitting 23/25 targets which added to his
winning high gun score saw him win the top gun too.
Overall High Gun went to Josh Fleay who overtook Sam West in the last event to claim victory. Fleay
commented that last time he won the Wagin High Gun he was three points down, this year he won
it 15 points down with 295/310. Ladies High Gun was won by Sandra Moffatt with 279/310. Veterans
High Gun was awarded to Terry Marsden with 263/310. Overall Junior High Gun was won by William
Freni-Lizzi with 283/310, Jordan Crouch second with 259/310 and third to Jacob Featherstone
228/310.
The Wagin Gun Club would like to thank all those who attended the carnival and those who sent
forth apolog ies. May next year see the return of flies, heat and dust.

Successful Season for Wagin Pennant Tennis By Cam Clifton The Wagin intra-club pennant tennis competition has enjoyed another successful season with 26
regular players and 34 reserve players enjoying mid week night pennants. The season kicked off on
18th of October with four teams playing either Tuesday or Thursday night. Teams consist of four Ladies
and four Gents playing two sets of doubles and one set of mixed doubles.
This season was the first year we have been able to hold two rounds. This gave us the flexibility to
wrap up the first round on the 10th of November, after four games each. The second round consisted
of another four games, starting 7th Feb and finishing eight days before Woolorama.
Of the 16 nights of scheduled tennis, only 3 were cancelled due to inclement weather.
The final results were;
Mick’s Machines Played 7 Won 6
Longy’s Legends Played 6 Won 4
Cam’s Crusaders Played 6 Won 2
Towball’s Terminators Played 7 Won 1
Thanks to all the regular players for their commitment this season. We are already looking forward
to next season kicking off again in October.
With only a few more reserve players needed to step up and become regular players next summer,
night teams pennants will become stronger and a lot easier for the captains to organise.
Along with the wonderful work our ladies do for the junior players, night teams pennants will ensure
a successful tennis club for the town of Wagin into the future.
New players are always welcome. Phone Cam on 0448 612 033
