Training forMissio Dei through Pentecostal Servanthood

The purpose of WAAST is twofold. First, WAAST seeks to train pastors and Christian workers to understand God's Word and themissio Deithe mission of Godand to assume their roles in thatmission. Second, WAAST seeks to encourage and equip them tominister in the power of the Holy Spirit and with a servant heart.

Join us this year as we pray for WAAST and its training ministry,

from the central campus in Lom, Togo, outward. The first entrypresents two ongoing needs: personnel and partnership. Jesus prayedfor laborers and for unity. We ask that you remember these twocritical needs throughout the year. We will then focus on:

the challenges in Africa that demand Pentecostal Bibletraining (Jan. 1031)

the personnel and physical needs at WAAST's centralcampus (Feb. 721)

the needs of the students (Feb. 28March 14) the students and graduates serving in various types of

ministry (March 21May 30) other ministries based on the WAAST campus (June 627) the 10 WAAST extension centers and the AG work in the

host countries (July 4Sept. 26) the AG work in the other countries in the region WAAST

serves (Oct. 3Dec. 26) annual events, on the weeks they occur

Thank you for praying with us!

    About WAAST and AGGST

v The Lom campus is actually home to two schools: theundergraduate West Africa Advanced School of Theology(WAAST) and the Assemblies of God Graduate School ofTheology (AGGST).

v WAAST opened in 1971. Its 3-year program offers a post-secondary diploma and a bachelor of theology degree.

v AGGST opened in 1994. Its 4-year program offers a master of

    arts degree in missiology.

v WAAST and AGGST have expanded to serve some 20 nationsof West and Central Africaa geographical region as large asthe U.S., including Alaska and Hawaii (see map). More than 9million AG believers live within this huge area.

v WAAST and AGGST courses are taught in both French andEnglish.

v WAAST courses are given in block sessions twice a year.AGGST students meet for 10 weeks each summer.

v Ten extension centers make it possible for students to attendblock sessions closer to home. They spend their last semester atthe central campus and graduate together.

v Since 1994, when the first extension center was opened, enrollment has grown more than 10 times.

v Most WAAST and AGGST students are already wellestablished in ministry and are married with children. Manyhold leadership positions in their national churches.

v WAAST and AGGST are training the trainers! Severalcountries in the region have many more churches than trained

pastors. WAAST and AGGST play a critical role in supplyingqualified teachers and administrators for Bible schools all overWest and Central Africa.

    Praise God for Answered Prayer!

Thank God with us for answered prayer in these areas:

2009 Graduating Class: More than 70 WAAST students from 10nations and 16 AGGST students from 8 nations received degrees inNovember and are now moving on to new challenges.

New extensions: The 2 newest centers, in Niamey, Niger, and Dakar,Senegal, are off to a good start, with 10 and 12 students respectively. These centers are vital, as both countries have a Muslim majority

    population.

Radio Jesus Loves You: Plans are set to put RJLY online in January. The Frequency of Hope can then reach Togolese and other Africanswherever they live.

Pentecostal Revival: At a continent-wide meeting in March 2009,African AG leaders declared a Decade of Pentecost, a concerted

effort to promote Pentecostal renewal throughout this coming decade. The goal is 10 million believers filled and empowered as witnessesfor God's glory.

Adjunct Faculty: We thank God for the core of much-needed,faithful visiting professors who serve WAAST. All courses in thecoming spring session will be taught by non-resident professors14Africans, from 4 nations, and 2 Americans.

Benin: God is calling more workers, and they are seeking training.Enrollment at the main Bible school has doubled in the last 3 years, tomore than 120. WAAST and AGGST have prepared several teachersfor this school.

Senegal: The Assemblies of God of Senegal has set a goal ofestablishing a Christian primary school in every major town. AG pastors are allowed to use the Bible as the textbook for weekly

morality lessons in the public schools.

Togo: The new Bible school in northern Togo now has a well to provide fresh water. Funds are being raised for a solar system toprovide electricity for lights and fans so students can study moreeffectively.

January 17 This week pray concerningTHE CHALLENGE OF ISLAM

Mosques dot the north-south road in Togomosques wedid not see a few years ago. Islam is growing throughoutAfrica, luring young people and the poor with promisesof a better life. In some areas churches and Christians aretargeted. Turning from Islam to Christ is social suicide, as

the family rejects the new believer. Each Friday, the Muslim holy day,WAAST students pray for Muslims. We invite you to join yourprayers with ours at 9 a.m. EST.

Please prayv for patience and wisdom for believers as they show Christ's love

to Muslim neighbors.v that the Lord will meet the needs of those who have left Islam.v that God will reveal himself through dreams and miracles to

Muslims who are truly seeking Him.

January 24 This week pray concerningTHE CHALLENGE OF AIDS

More than 22.5 million people in sub-Saharan Africa are HIV-positive.Because of the fear and stigma AIDS

brings, many deny the disease or rejectthe victim. Children are left to care foryounger siblings. Spirit-filled believersset an example of compassion toward patients and families, teachmoral living to prevent AIDS, and help orphans and communitiesdevastated by their losses. They can offer what secular agencies can't:Jesus and hope for eternal life.

Please prayv that the Lord will bless the efforts of AG churches and believers

as they confront this issue and educate others.v that many HIV+ people will find the Lord in their distress.v for efforts to care for the many AIDS orphans.

January 31 This week pray concerningTHE NEED FOR PENTECOSTAL RENEWAL

In March 2009, the Africa Assemblies ofGod Alliance declared this new decade aDecade of Pentecost. Africa's 60,000 AGchurches are mobilizing to see at least 10million believers Spirit-baptized andempowered as witnesses. Launch Day isPentecost Sunday, May 23. As pastors andleaders, our students and grads will be

involved in many ways in these efforts. Forup-to-date information, see:www.decadeofpentecost.org.

Please prayv that God will bless this initiative and fill and empower those who

seek the Baptism.v that we at WAAST will be used to further this effort.

v that millions will be reached, new churches planted, andmissionaries sent within Africa and around the world.

February 7 This week pray forRESIDENT STAFF ON THE CENTRAL CAMPUS

Currently 4 American and 2 African families reside on campus. Later

in the year the composition will change as we return from itinerationand another family leaves. Visiting professors from many nations andshort-term helpers come and go throughout the year. Each shift inpersonnel brings a new dynamic with its blessings and challenges aswe work together.

Please prayv for strength, unity, and flexibility for each one as our ever-shifting

team works to run the school smoothly.v that those who come to help short-term may see and be blessed by

the good example of the WAAST resident team.

v for good relationships between resident personnel and the localschool employees.

February 14 This week pray forADJUNCT FACULTY

WAAST and AGGST are increasingly dependent on visiting professors, who come to teach for 2 or 3 weeks. Many of theseteachers are WAAST graduates and AGGST students or graduates. This diversity gives students a broader perspective of God's work andan appreciation of other cultures. We thank God for this growing bodyof qualified teachers for both the main campus and the centers.

    Please pray

v that the Lord will strengthen those who leave their own duties tocome teach.

v for funds for travel; air travel within Africa is expensive, and thecost of travel from the U.S. prevents some from coming.

v for still more qualified teachers for these programs.

February 21 This week pray concerningCAMPUS IMPROVEMENTS

Some construction and renovations are needed to meetthe physical demands as WAAST hosts more students. An older 2-story dorm needs a facelift and a new roof($20,000). A second story needs to be added to aclassroom building ($90,000), and anotherclassroom/office building needs a new roof ($20,000). The school

also needs better and cheaper Internet access. New study resources, especially in French, is an ongoing need.

    Please pray

v for funding for the renovation and construction projects.

vfor funds for Internet fees, and for a satellite hookup.

v for more study resources; WAAST must build up its library tobetter serve the doctoral program hosted on the campus.

v for wisdom in planning for future growth.

February 28 This week pray forTHE NEW SESSION AND NEW STUDENTS

Students are now arriving for the 9-week session that begins Monday. They will take 6 courses during this time. First-year students inparticular face new challenges. Some have been out of school forseveral years and must learn to study at the college level. Many haveleft their families behind. For many, adjusting to a multiculturalenvironment and new ideas is a challenge. All the students, both newand returning, need strength for the intense schedule.

Please prayv for health and strength for both students and professors.v for new students as they adjust to the rigorous study program,

encounter new ideas, and relate to others from different countries.

March 7 This week pray forSTUDENTS FINANCIAL NEEDS

Like so many in college, WAAST and AGGST students have financialneeds. Many are pastors with meager salaries, and they struggle tofind funds for school. Travel expenses for some are high. Somereceive help from their churches or a partial scholarship. For most, itis an opportunity to learn again of God's faithfulness and miracles ofprovision, both for themselves and for their families while they areaway.

Please prayv that the Lord will work miracles of provision for students who

do not have the funds, and for their families.

vthat these testimonies of provision will build their faith andencourage others to pursue God's call and to trust Him to meettheir needs

March 14 This week pray forSTUDENTS FAMILIES AT HOME

One of the greatest stressors for students isconcern for their families as they are away.Sometimes the wife struggles as she takes onmuch of the ministry responsibility, childrenfall sick, or issues arise in their church orministry. Those left behind need Godsprotection, and those here need peace of mind to study well.

Please prayv that the Lord will ease the homesickness many of the students

feel, and give them His peacev that the Lord will give peace and health to family members.v for the smooth running of the churches in the absence of their

    pastors.

    March 21This week pray for

    NATIONAL CHURCH LEADERS

As we visit various places in West andCentral Africa, we find more and moreAssemblies of God headquarters staffedby alumni and students of WAAST andAGGST. Their training for missio Dei

through Pentecostal servanthood ischanging attitudes and strategies at thenational level. These leaders are movingtheir churches toward more Spirit-empowered evangelism within theircountries and toward missions efforts in other lands.

Please prayv for Gods wisdom for these influential leaders.

v that under God's guidance these leaders will continuallyemphasize the Holy Spirit and outreach, thus helping the growthof the churches to continue.

v that leaders may effectively inspire and train those under them.

March 28 This week pray forPASTORS AND CHURCH PLANTERS

Most WAAST and AGGST students serve as pastors in theirrespective countries. Because of the shortage of pastors in manyareas, some must oversee several churches. Many train lay workers tohelp them. Other students are planting churches in new areas.WAAST's flexible format of 6- and 9-week sessions allows pastors toimmediately apply and teach what they have learned to lay workersand to their congregations.

Please prayv that the Lord will bless and keep these churches during their

pastors study leave.v for these students/pastors as they train effective lay leaders.v for those pioneering new churches, that the Lord will help them

establish a solid foundation and give them favor in thecommunities.

April 4 This week pray forMISSIONARIES

WAAST and AGGST emphasize the responsibility ofevery believer in completing missio Deithe missionof God. Many are replacing the receiving mentalitywith a sending mentality, and graduates are

answering God's call to serve as missionaries in otherAfrican nations and in other parts of the world. Someare burdened for Muslims and go to difficult places. The teaching they have received in WAAST'smulticultural setting helps them as they adjust to newcultures and challenges.

    Please pray

v that the Lord will call still more students into His harvest field.Often they can go where American missionaries cannot.

v for strength and peace for these missionaries in times of difficultyand even persecution, and that their lives will be an example tothose around them.

More than 6,000 students are enrolled in 100 AG Bible schools andextension programs throughout West and Central Africa. Many ofthese are led and staffed by WAAST and AGGST graduates. Somegraduates have begun new training programs or schools. Graduatesfrom non-AG denominations apply their knowledge to improve theirown church's training programs. It's still not enough! More well-trained teachers and administrators are needed as the churches and theneed for leaders grow.

Please prayv for those graduates working in Bible schools and training

programs as teachers and administrators.v that the Lord will call more workers to attend these schools.v that the Lord would meet the material and financial needs of these

    schools and their students.

Please prayv for the women studying at WAAST and AGGST, that God will

April 25 This week pray forYOUTH PASTORS

African youth today are confronted withmany issues that the global village hasbrought, such as gay marriage and Internetpornography. Poverty tempts many to joinIslamic sects or follow other false teachingsthat promise fortunes. They need pastors who canmodel godly living and ground them in the Word ofGod. Young converts may be rejected by their

families. Some WAAST and AGGST students andgraduates work with youth in the high schools anduniversities, showing them the Way to right living and true riches.

Please prayv for the young people of Africa as they face temptations from the

world, that the Holy Spirit will draw them to the Lord.v for the youth pastors as they teach these young people and as they

help those who face opposition from their families.

May 2 This week pray forCHILDRENS WORKERS

The children sing loudly and proudly, thenperform a skit for the church on Children's Day.

They invite their friends to kids camp and learnto pray and tell others about Jesus. They aretomorrow's church leaders, and some WAASTand AGGST students and grads specialize inministry to kids. Some train children's workers.Others teach in schools or reach kids throughrelief efforts and ministry to AIDS orphans and street children.

Please prayv that the Lord will give these pastors and workers strength and

wisdom as they minister to children.v that many kids will come to the Lord and become witnesses to

    unsaved family members.

May 16 This week pray forWORKERS AMONG MUSLIMS

Some WAAST and AGGST students andgraduates work in Muslim areas. Some grew upin Muslim homes themselves and are wellequipped to speak and minister to them.

Because of opposition against Muslims whoconvert, these workers and their congregationsoften become responsible to care for outcastbelievers. As Islam tries to claim more power, land, and souls in West and Central Africa, they must minister in thepower and wisdom of the Holy Spirit.

    Please pray

v that God will protect and give favor to workers and believers inMuslim areas and help them to be effective witnesses.

v for the salvation of the families of Muslim-background studentsand alumni; this is a heavy burden many carry.

Christian literature from the Western world does notaddress African issues in an African way; Africans canbest meet this need. WAAST and AGGST studentslearn to thoughtfully write for their people. Some
