WINTER WEATHER IN CCRCE

The days are getting colder and with each dip in the thermometer we move one step closer to winter weather: icy roads, snow and freezing rain. For Chignecto-Central Regional Centre for Education schools, winter weather means the potential closure of schools when conditions are considered unsuitable for our students and staff. When winter weather is predicted, CCRCE staff consult with multiple weather forecasts and forecasters, and check on road conditions throughout the school board region via the RCMP and the Nova Scotia Department of Transportation, as well as our own staff members on the ground in each area, to help make the call to cancel school or for early dismissal. Decisions regarding school cancellations, or early dismissals, are made by CCRCE’s Operational Services Department and happen in the early morning (before 6:30 am). It is important that our schools have the most up-to-date contact information for parents and guardians, and that parents and guardians have alternative arrangements in place for their children, before a cancellation or early dismissal takes place. A full day cancellation or an early dismissal, due to weather conditions, will be announced in several ways:

The “All Schools Open” button on the CCRCE home page changes to red for a full cancellation or orange for early dismissal. By clicking on the button, you can get closure information specific to your Family of Schools.

A message regarding the cancellation or early dismissal is posted to the CCRSB home page under “News”, to the CCRCE Facebook page and to our Twitter feed.

Information is sent to all local newspapers, radio and television stations within CCRSB, including CBC radio in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island and CFCY radio in Charlottetown.

CCRCE thanks all parents, guardians and students for their patience and understanding as we move through the start of the winter season. Please know that all decisions regarding cancellations and early dismissals are made with great care for the safety of students and staff.

The Hour of Code… an

opportunity for WD students We live in a world surrounded by technology. And we know that whatever field our students choose to go into as adults, their ability to succeed will increasingly depend on understanding how technology works. But only a tiny fraction of us are learning how technology works. Fewer than half of all schools teach computer science. That’s why our entire school is joining in on the largest learning event in history: The Hour of Code, during Computer Science Education Week (3.-9. December). More than 100 million students worldwide have already tried an Hour of Code. Our Hour of Code is making a statement and Walter Duggan is ready to teach these foundational 21st-century skills. To continue bringing programming activities to your students, we want to make our Hour of Code event huge. Students will be using code.org and scratch to write script from grades 2-6. Grades primary and one will be using coding robots call BeeBots to code and interact with. It is exciting to be part of such a worldwide event that so many world leaders are encouraging, Obama, Trudeau, Bill Gates just to name a few have participated in Hour of Code, and Westville is joining this world wide initiative. Please take a moment to check in with your child to see what they are doing, some may even be able to show you on a device at home.
