Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital

The Medical Oncology Service is located in DD Block at the Comprehensive Cancer Centre, Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. For directions please refer to the back page of this brochure.

Car Parking

Paid parking is available at the multi-storey car park accessible via Winthrop Avenue.

Alternatively an underground car park (DD block) is available with limited spaces and there is short term parking outside the front of the cancer centre on Gairdner Drive.

There are several disabled parking bays available outside the Cancer Centre.

Subsidised parking is available for those who meet the eligibility criteria. Please contact the Welfare Officer in the Social work department for further information.

Hospital Funded Transport

Hospital funded transport is available for patients who meet specific criteria. If you are eligible, this can be arranged via your treatment team.

Medical OncologistsThe Outpatient Clinic is where you will be reviewed by your Medical Oncology team.

Medical Oncologists are doctors specialising in the treatment of cancers.

Currently we have a 12 Medical Consultants working alongside 4 Medical Registrars.

Consultants run specialised clinics for different cancer types, therefore clinics run simultaneously and can be very busy.

Some consultants also provide limited private patient clinics for those who have private health insurance. If you would prefer this option please discuss it with the Consultant at the time of your visit.

Medical Oncology nursesMedical Oncology Nurses are a dedicated team, who provide support and advice throughout your cancer treatment.

All nurses are trained in the safe administration of cancer treatment and can advise you on side effect management.

Oncology PharmacistsThe Oncology Service Pharmacists are a team of specially trained Pharmacists working in the outpatient clinic in the Comprehensive Cancer Centre.

Oncology pharmacists are available during clinic hours to answer any medication-related queries you may have.

Clinical TrialsWe are always looking for ways to improve our treatments. You may be asked to participate in a clinical trial, and if you are, this will be discussed with you in detail so you can decide whether to participate.

WA Cancer Nurse Co-ordination ServiceThe WA Cancer Nurse Co-ordination Service is a team of nurses specialising in different cancer types.

They can support you by providing:

• Information about your diagnosis and treatment• Liaison/links with other services• Coordination of your appointments• Providing a central point of contact

If you require this service please liaise with your treatment team.

Palliative Care Services and Pain ClinicsThe Palliative Care specialists provide consultative care for inpatients or outpatients. The team consists of two specialist Physicians, Clinical Nurse Consultant, Clinical Nurses, Specialist Social Worker and Occupational Therapist.

They work in conjunction with you and your family together with your other specialist doctors.

The team provides expert pain and symptom management, support and reassurance to family and loved ones coordinate care at home or in inpatient Palliative Care Units, assist with Advance Care Planning or Health Directives, offer support in the outpatient clinic in DD block and offer bereavement/ grief support or guidance.

Nutrition and DieteticsGood nutrition is important for all cancer patients.

The Dietitians provide a comprehensive service before during and after your treatment.

If you have any concerns regarding what to eat during treatment, weight loss or gain, lack of appetite or change in energy levels then ask for a referral. This is by appointment only. Referrals can be done by your Medical Oncology Team, Nursing Team or alternatively call 9346 2850.

The team will attempt to see you during your visit to the cancer centre.

Social WorkA Social Work service is available at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital to support cancer outpatients, their carers and family members. They can help with the stress associated with a cancer diagnosis, treatment and its impact on everyday life.

Social Workers are members of the multidisciplinary health care team that offer a wide range of support and access to services.

The Welfare Officers can provide information and assistance with financial matters, transport, and accommodation options.

Referrals can be done by your Medical Oncology Team, Nursing Team or alternatively you can call 9346 4666.

WA Psycho – Oncology ServiceThe WA Psycho-Oncology Service provides emotional support to adult cancer patients and their immediate care giving adult family member.

This service is free of charge but you will need a referral from a health professional.

Western Australia Youth Cancer ServiceThis service is located on the ground floor, DD block, by the front reception area. They provide support for adolescents and young adults aged 15-25 years who have been diagnosed with cancer.

The team of Medical Doctors, Nursing staff and Psychological specialists is available to offer help to patients and their families to get through the challenges they are facing.

Cancer Council /Volunteers

Cancer Council WA understands that a cancer diagnosis may have an enormous impact on you and your family.

There is a wide range of practical and emotional support, professional services and information to assist you.

There is a kiosk situated in the clinic area of DD block with volunteers to help you when attending your clinic appointment.

For more information, please call the Cancer Council on 13 11 20 or refer to the Cancer Council WA Cancer Information and Support Services brochure.

Solaris Care

The Solaris Care Foundation at SCGH is next to the Cancer Centre on Watling Walk. It is primarily a drop-in centre, which provides a place to sit comfortably, or read a book or talk, away from the noise of waiting rooms.

Solaris Care also provides complementary therapies free of charge for patients receiving treatment and their primary carer.

They also offer access to “chemo club” exercise sessions, with a full list and weekly timetable available in the centre. For more information or bookings call 6383 3475

If you require an interpreter at your outpatient appointment please notify a member of staff by calling 6383 3000
