Easter Sunday April 12, 2020
St. Matthias Church | 1582 Ferris | Columbus, OH 43224 1
PASTORAL POST
God of undying life, by your mighty hand
you raised up Jesus from the grave
and appointed him judge of the living and the dead.
Bestow upon those baptized into his death
the power flowing from his resurrection,
that we may proclaim near and far
the pardon and peace you give us.
Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, firstborn from the dead, who lives
with you now and always in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever.
AMEN. ALLELUIA.
A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to John.
On the first day of the week, Mary of Magdala came to the tomb early in the
morning, while it was still dark, and saw the stone removed from the tomb. So
she ran and went to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved,
and told them, “They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we don’t know
where they put him.”
So Peter and the other disciple went out and came to the tomb. They both ran,
but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and arrived at the tomb first; he
bent down and saw the burial cloths there, but did not go in. When Simon Pe-
ter arrived after him, he went into the tomb and saw the burial cloths there,
and the cloth that had covered his head, not with the burial cloths but rolled up
in a separate place. Then the other disciple also went in, the one who had ar-
rived at the tomb first, and he saw and believed. For they did not yet under-
stand the Scripture that he had to rise from the dead.
The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord, Jesus Christ.

Where Can I Find You, Lord?
Easter Sunday (Year A)
April 12, 2020
Fr. Tony Davis
Mary Magdalene, upon being the first one to discover the empty tomb, cried out,
“they have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we don’t know where they put
him?” Not yet realizing that he had been raised, she wanted to know where he
was. We constantly ask ourselves that same question: ‘Where is Jesus?’ We usually
ask it out of frustration: ‘Jesus, why aren’t you doing what I asked you to do?’ But
this question should be asked much more often out of genuine curiosity: ‘Where
can I find you, Lord?’
Today, we celebrate Easter Sunday. It is important to remember that there was a
real change in Jesus at the resurrection. Beforehand, he was a human being like us
in all things but sin. He was born in Bethlehem, travelled from town to town, was
crucified, died, and was buried. This is all somewhat predictable. After his resur-
rection, however, he wasn’t merely resuscitated. He rose into a new life, much
stronger and more universal than human life as we know it. He was now the Risen
Christ! The Risen Christ was no longer subject to time and space. He could dis-
guise himself as a gardener to Mary Magdalene or as a stranger to the two disciples
on the road to Emmaus. He could walk through locked doors to greet his disci-
ples. Finally, he could ascend into heaven in the sight of all. In short, the Risen
Christ could take on more forms than the historical Jesus. While Jesus was limited
to a body in time and place, the Risen Christ, who still includes Jesus, was and still
is unbounded. Now, he is much less predictable.
Whenever we ask the question, ‘where can I find you, Lord,’ we should know that
we are asking about the Risen Christ. Obviously, we cannot find Jesus anymore.
He lived 2,000 years ago and the tomb he was buried in is empty. He is not here.
Whenever we ask the question, we are opening ourselves up to much more than
we initially realize. Where is the Risen Christ? The answer may seem too good to
be true, but the answer is everywhere. That’s what ironically makes him so unpre-
dictable!
Whenever we think we know where the Lord is, we usually get tunnel vision. We
focus so much on that one point to the exclusion of all the others. While we may
find him, as soon as we lose our focus, we fall back into asking the question,
‘where are you?’ out of frustration, as if it was the Lord’s fault for not being where
we needed him to be. Or, if we look for him too narrowly, we become dismissive
of other people’s experiences of God, even if they are valid and legitimate. When
this happens, we are missing out on the fullness of his presence.
The Risen Christ is everywhere, so we better not isolate him in any one place.
Do I see the resurrection on Easter Sunday as the great expansion of the presence
of our Lord across space and time?
Jesus did live in one place and was one historical person. After the resurrection,
however, the Risen Christ is revealed as the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and
the end. If that is the case, whenever we ask, ‘where are you, Lord?,’ we should be
able to find him anywhere in between.
