INSIDE

Welcome to the December issue of Wolverton and Greenleys News. December is an exciting and busy month for us all pre-paring to celebrate Christmas. Our largest event in this festive period is the Lantern Festival. This is a wonderful event for all the family to enjoy, as the towns streets are illuminated by a parade of lanterns, accompanied by music and dancers.

You can attend the many workshops to learn how to build your own lantern or come and buy a lantern from the town hall or other outlets in the town to build your lantern at home. More information on these workshops and the event can be found inside.

As part of the festivities the council have been investing in new Christmas lights across the parish. Greenleys has had the trees in the Community garden illuminated and additional lighting added outside the shops. Hodge Lea trees have been illuminated outside the local shops and following the feedback we received on Facebook, Wolverton has new multi-coloured lights for along the Stratford Road. For the first year, we asked for local businesses to contribute to the festive display enable us to illuminate all parts of our parish.

We would like to give a special thanks to all the businesses in the Square who donated money to enable us to purchase the trees for above the shops and Knorr Bremse who provided the funds to install electrics to power the lights for these trees.

As funding continues to the stretched from Government, we will be asking for both residents and businesses to donate funds to help us purchase new lights so we can continue improving these illuminations.

We hope you enjoy the new display. I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

The new academic year is well under-way and here at Greenleys Junior we have already had lots of exciting things happening. When the children arrived back in school in September they were able to see our latest, fantastic addition to the school, a fully immer-sive, interactive room. We can now transport children anywhere in the World and beyond!

We recently, along with lots of other schools, took part in a badminton festival and were delighted to get through to the regional finals which

were held at the National Badminton Centre. As well as badminton, lots of our older children also represented the school in the Milton Keynes Cross Coutry Championships at Stantonbury Fields. Our Girls team came first in the ‘small school’ category and this year’s competition marks Greenleys’ own personal best with 6 out of 14 runners finishing in the top 10!

We are one of only 16 primary schools in the country to be selected to take part in the Great Art Quest. This began with a visit to MK Gallery for some of our year 5 children and will

culminate in the children, along with an artist from the gallery, creating their own artwork for display in the gallery’s Project Space. You will be able to visit this masterpiece in January 2015.

Three children visited MK Springers in Kiln Farm for an afternoon of gymnastics. They were lucky enough to try out equipment including trampolines, balance beams, vaults and bars. They had great fun and came back to school thoroughly tired out!

NEWS FROM GREENLEYS SOCIAL GROUPA Happy Birthday celebration for Nan Seventeen members of Greenleys Social Group really know how to have a good time. On a recent visit to the Black Horse pub at Great Linford, for lunch, a delightful local resident Mrs. Moloney, better known to all her fans as Nan, was celebrating her

82nd birthday. She had a beautiful birthday cake made by Edie from Goddards Croft along with other interesting presents. All of us had a delicious meal served by a handsome waiter, followed by a spontaneous comedy show, with Jacqui presenting Nan with a glamorous pair of black panties which she was happy to show off! A fun time was had by all, and you could never stay miserable in the company of Nan!

WOLVERTON BUS ALTERATIONS

A new Timetable came into operation on Sunday 2nd November with several additions to the Wolverton bus network. Route 37 will provide an occasional DIRECT route from Wolverton to Newport Pagnell continuing onto Stoke Goldington and Olney (four weekday trips plus an early morning one on a Saturday including school holidays). From September Route 83 began to provide a single journey to and from Silverstone UTC on college days only via Deanshanger and Buckingham from The Agora 07:52am.

SubsidiesDue to continual reductions in Central Government Funding to local Authorities fewer funds are available to sustain local and rural bus routes. Routes 30/31/33/33A/37, the evening routes and Sunday Service routes 4 and 7 are totally subsidised by Milton Keynes Council. Please try to use these subsidised services as much as possible even though the journey time is longer than using your own car as without constant use these bus routes may not be available when we really do need them.

Local ReminderRoute 300 leaves every day from the Agora at 05:06 to John Lewis, Magna Park. The return journey leaves Woburn Sands (The Swan) at 22:01, John Lewis at 22:16 and one hour later on Mondays to Fridays which is also subsidised.

NEW LIFE CHURCH - RIDGEWAY OPENINGMAYOR DEREK EASTMAN OPENS NEW HALLS

Sunday 12 October was an excit-ing day for those who attend New Life Church, which is based at The Ridgeway Centre in Wolverton Mill South.

It marked the end of an eighteen-month building project and the official opening of three new halls. The building, which was originally a commercial warehouse, was purchased by the church in 2007 and underwent a major conversion programme to create a main auditorium for 500 people, and a number of small meeting rooms.

Once this was complete the facility also became available for hire by the local community and businesses for events and training. Rapid growth of its congregation soon meant that the largest of the meeting rooms was too small for the youth group and chil-dren’s group. So the church embarked on another major project that remod-elled one third of the internal space to create three larger halls capable of holding up to 180, 120 and 60 people. The church was delighted that Milton Keynes Mayor Derek Eastman was available to officially open the new facilities. Derek had been a youth worker in the past so he very much appreciated the driving force behind the work – more room for more young

people at the Friday night youth café and on Sunday mornings. In addition to church use, The Ridge-way Centre is available for confer-encing and training events, and is regularly used by local businesses and charities. It is also supportive of local community groups, and has recently hosted a choir workshop and theatre group rehearsals.

For more information on the church visit their website: www.newlifechurchmiltonkeynes.org

The cricket season is now well and truly over. The First team finished second in Division One of the Cherwell League a long way behind winners Buckingham Town.

This was a brilliant achievement for Aky Hussain's team after gaining promotion to the top division last year. The Second Team ended in 4th place in Division 6, again a remarkable achievement especially after finish-ing in the bottom two the previous year. The signs are good for the 2015 season, but we still need new players. The presentation evening went really well and trophies were awarded to both the colts and the senior players. Dominic Tofts won the Dave Maw Trophy for his contribution to the colts section during the year. For the adults the L.N. Smith "Clubman of the Year Shield" was jointly won by Malcolm Rose and Steve King.

Winter nets for the colts section start on Thursday 13th November at the Radcliffe School from 18.30 to 20.30 for 4 weeks before Christmas. They will then start again at the same time

and place from Thursday 12th March 2015 for 5 weeks. Senior nets start at the Radcliffe School on Sunday 15th March 2015 for 5 weeks from 10.00 to 12.00. Kevin is the contact for more information. Although the season is now almost finished, the club is still seeking new players, both juniors and seniors. You may be new to the area or wanting to start up again after a break, or just want a new challenge at a different club. Please get in touch. Should you be interested in joining the club please contact Kevin Pichowski on [email protected] or 07778 535009 in the first instance.

The Club archivist, Colin Kightley, has been writing a history of Wolverton Town Cricket Club for over 20 years and, eventually, it is nearly ready for the printers. The book covers the history of the club from its formation in 1894 to 2011, the significance of 2011 and 100 years at the Osborne Street ground. The book includes cricket in Wolverton before 1894, Wolverton Works Shop competition, Wolverton Knockout Cup (running since 1954), one of the oldest compe-

titions in the country. As far as pos-sible averages for everyone who has either batted or bowled for the club. Hopefully there will be photographs that have never been seen before. The book is targeted for release at the end of January 2015 in hardback. The cost has not yet been fixed as this depends on the numbers for the print run. At the present time, we are trying to find out who may wish to buy a copy with no commitment.

If you would like to express an interest in the book please email [email protected] or write to WTCC, Osborne Street, Wolverton, Milton Keynes, MK12 5HH or drop a letter through the post-box. When the book is ready we will contact you.

Our twin town, Ploegsteert in Belgium, hosts a half-marathon event every 11th November, which is a national holiday in Belgium. It attracts a huge number of runners from all over. This year we were delighted to have Cllr.Kevin Keegan actually participate in the run.

He was very pleased to get round the course in 1 hour 43 minutes 30 seconds. Cllrs. Ellen Robinson and Hilary Saunders were there as his support team. We were glad to renew acquaintances amongst the Bel-gians, many of them band members and some of them officials. Later, we placed a posy of poppies on Albert French's grave.

If anyone reading this would like to take part next year, we would be pleased to hear from you.

We’ve all seen the TV programmes and newspaper articles commemorating the Centenary of the Great War’s beginning, but now the reality of what war meant to the people of the Milton Keynes area is brought vividly home in a new book.

The Milton Keynes Book of Days of The Great War presents a day to day account of the years which changed so many lives, told by the people themselves.

Hundreds of voices tell the story for the people of Milton Keynes’ communities, through recorded memories, diaries, letters and newspaper reports (many of them from the Wolverton area) – as assembled and preserved for posterity by Living Archive Milton Keynes.

The book, of over 200 pages, is on sale locally at the Age UK bookshop in Stratford Road, Busker’s Coffee Shop, at the Museum or via Living Archive’s website www.livingarchive.org.uk.

This year saw the Western Front Association busy with events in what is now well-known as their Muddy Field events – that’s because it nearly always rains, as much as it did the first year we had a water station at the MK Marathon. Luckily since then it’s been fine and sunny for that event and we are gearing up for next year. We welcome enquiries from all like-mind-ed people. Please get in touch if you would like to know more about any aspect of the war.

There is a one-off 2015 calendar on sale with images of the 10th Essex group and these can be obtained from 21, Mill Road Cranfield Bedford MK43 0JG for £9 including postage & packing. All proceeds go to support

the work of the 10th Essex and the WFA whose unique project during the Centenary period is to raise funds for current Service Personnel, in the name of those who served 100 hundred years ago. We also support the twin-ning in this.

We meet every third Friday at the City Discovery Centre, 7 for 7.30pm and always welcome new visitors and friends. The next speaker will be John Stanyard speaking about VC’s. In December we are running our Annu-al Photography Competition on the theme of Remembrance. All entries, either prints or digital images can be brought/sent to the address above but please email or ring first. Winners will be notified by email or telephone and

exhibited locally at the WFA Christmas Social evening at the City Discovery Centre on the 12th December. All entries are judged by a professional judge with a deep-seated interest in the subject. The Western Front Asso-ciation is an educational charity whose aims are to further interest in The Great War of 1914-1918.
