more visiting with residents than snapping! There were several contests held this year. One was to guess the pumpkin weight and win the pumpkin and a nice pumpkin carving set (also from Randalls). Cynthia Hewlett from Yellow Rose Trail won the contest, weighing the pumpkin in at 24 pounds, 5 ounces. The actual weight was 24.3 ounces. Good guessing, Cynthia! And then there was the Guess the Number of Gummy Worms contest…the neighbor that won this one got away without me writing down his name, but he guessed 147 worms (actual number was 159). I’m sure someone out there has his name, so please let me know, and I will publish it in the next newsletter. There was also a Best Halloween Costume Contest for the kids, and there were five winners (pictured here in the news-letter). They all were so cute that it made for some very hard choices for the two residents and two Executive Committee

How many gummy worms should I guess? Decisions, decisions. See “Picnic,” continued on page 4

BROWN BAG PARENT TEAS These bring-your-own lunch sessions are designed to be informal conversations between parents and the principal or local experts. We will provide tea and cookies and hope to expand parent understanding of the school’s programs, curriculum, and developmental and parenting issues of middle school students. Parents and community members are welcome to attend. Upcoming sessions are: Wednesday, January 16; Friday, February 1; and Wednesday, May 7. They all begin at 12:00 noon. Watch the Marquee for the topic. MENTORING A great way to get involved at Clint Small is to be a mentor to a student. Mentors serve as adult role models to students--think of it as being a life coach for a middle schooler! You help one student by volunteering your time for 30 minutes one day a week. We get amazing results with kids with just this small investment of your time. If you would like to be a Partner in Education Mentor for CSMS, please go to http://www.austinpartners.org/ and follow directions in the volunteer box on the website for becoming a mentor. Once you have applied you will be contacted by the school for further training and then be paired with a student. You may also call Sherry Lepine, Assistant Principal for further assistance or questions. We always need male mentors. Please feel free to post this bulletin at your place of employment, church or gym bulletin board.

Winterizing Your Home & Garden(really, it isn’t as scary as it sounds!)

When I was asked to write this article, I was dreading it. Really. Winterizing my home doesn’t sound interesting, and I can tell you that is not something I would consider my forte. I was even dreading googling “winterizing your home” to dredge through the myriads of opinions on this topic. But guess what I found out?! Everyone recommends basically three things (and they are easy):

Sealing leaks: on exterior walls, under eaves, and around the fireplace. You just use a lot of compound caulk. Also check doors and windows. This will help heat from escaping.Protect pipes: wrap heat tape around outdoor faucets.Insulation: check for holes or damage to your insulation. Also, consider applying insulation directly to the underside of the roof.

That was so straightforward that I decided I’d even include some tips on winterizing your garden (since so many residents have spent so many hours on their yards).

Remove spent annuals and cut perennials back to ground level. Weed now, it will save you time in the Spring.Apply winter mulch to perennials.Plant bulbs for beautiful Spring blooms. Now is also a great time to clean yard implements and mowers.

Quite painless isn’t it? I hope this will inspire you to take a few easy steps to protect your investments in your home and yard.
