The African Spelling Bee is a

Consortium of Spelling Bee

Organizations from across Africa

founded in 2015 with the aim to promote

a reading culture and help Learners improve

their communication skills; develop and

nurture intra-personal skills and values

such as self-esteem, self-awareness,

confidence and personal integrity; inspire

intercultural understanding by creating

learning communities in which Learners can

increase their understanding of language

and culture deliberately designed to help

them become more globally engaged.

The Ministry of Education, Science and

Technology has partnered with the Kenya

National Spelling Bee to host the 3rd African

Spelling Bee Championship following the

nomination of Kenya as the host Country.

The event will be held at the Kaskazi Beach Hotel in Kwale County, from

22nd – 25th November, 2018. The event will bring together Teams

from over 15 African Countries including

Ethiopia, Nigeria, South Africa, Ghana,

Uganda, Rwanda, Lesotho, Malawi,

Botswana, Tanzania and Cameroon,

among others.

The competition will involve the Top

3 finalists in the Junior category and the

Top 3 finalists in the Senior category from

every Country’s National Spelling Bee

Championship.

Winners of the 2018 ASB

Championship will get prizes ranging

from Cash Prizes, Medals, Trophies,

Certificates and Tablets.

The continental Spelling Bee event

will be characterized by several activities

across the Coastal region before the

coveted championship such as Tours of

the Portuguese-built Fort in Mombasa,

the one-of-a kind Wild Waters and Haller

Park in Mombasa County sponsored by the

Kenya Tourism Board.

WELCOME TO THE 2018 AFRICAN SPELLING BEE CHAMPIONSHIP

The Spelling Bee concept is about the

glory of being able to overcome the

complexities of words which makes one a

Champion Speller. The overall objective of

the African Spelling Championship is to

stimulate an interest amongst learners

in learning languages and other subjects

aimed at broadening their horizons.

ABOUT ASB

The African Spelling Bee was started with

a vision of celebrating the African Child,

inspiring them to be literate and creating

a platform for them to interact, connect

and build their confidence. The future

belongs to these children, and ASB is

determined to create an opportunity for

them to flourish.

OUR JOURNEY

The 1st African Spelling Championship

was jointly organized by 9 likeminded

Spelling Bee Organizations from Kenya,

Uganda, South Africa, Ethiopia, Nigeria,

Botswana, Malawi, Zimbabwe and

Lesotho. The spelling bee championship

took place on 16th July, 2016 at the

River Stone Lodge situated in the World

Heritage site at the Cradle of Human

Kind in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The 2nd African Spelling Bee

Championship brought together Teams

from 10 African Countries including;

Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho,

Malawi, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania

and Uganda. The event had a Senior

category made up of High School

Students and a Junior category made

up of Primary School Pupils whereby

in each category every Country was

allowed 3 participants. The event took

place at Maropeng, Cradle of Human Kind

in Johannesburg, South Africa from 14th

December to 17th December, 2017.
