August 9, 2020 W E L C O M E Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

The Mission of our parish is to serve our neighbors with Jesus, to pray in faith with Jesus, and to teach as His Church with Jesus, so “that all may have more abundant life.” (John 10:10). The Word of God, the Sacraments, and the Catechism of the Catholic Church are the instruments and standards of this work of evangelization and faith formation.

Annual Catholic Appeal 2020 We have begun the 2020 Annual Catholic Appeal. We thank all who have participated with a gift to the 2019 Appeal and ask that everyone prayerfully consider making a gift to the 2020 appeal. WEEKLY OFFERINGS: In the absence of Mass attendance, we will be grateful if you can remember your weekly offerings to the church, either through the mail or dropping them through the rectory mail slot; whether weekly, monthly, or when the emergency is over and Masses resume.

Please note that the Czech Mass will continue to be conducted in the Institute, not the lower church.

FROM THE OGLE OFFICE By the time you read this letter, our parish will have completed all our first sacrament celebrations for both our young people and adults. We believe that we are among the first parishes in our diocese to complete these celebrations after the resumption of public Masses shut down by the Covid crisis. These celebrations were the result of visionary planning, communication and pastoral care led by our Coordinator of Religious Education, Nelly Gutiérrez, and implemented by our parish youth catechists and adult catechists and mentors in the RCIA/RICA programs in English and Spanish. They all deserve our recogni-tion and thanks for implementing this essential part of our Christian mission and parish apostolate. The celebrations in question were: Saturday July 11: First Confessions for grade-schoolers (51) Saturday, July 18: First Holy Communion for grade schoolers (51) Friday, July 24: Adult Full Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Communion- 5) and completed initiation (2) Friday July 31: Adult Confirmation and/or First Communion (14) Saturday, July 8: Youth Confirmation (56) with Bishop Cisneros In particular, this week’s edition of the Tablet, our Diocesan newspaper has a fine article about our First Communion Masses, complete with a unique collage of the children created by Reyna & Eduardo: https://thetablet.org/our-lady-of-mount-carmel-celebrates-first-communion/ With these events completed, we have a “clean slate” to enter into the new pastoral year of adult and youth religious ed-ucation in September. We are now taking registration until September 18 for religious education (CCD) for all youngsters in public school who need to complete their sacraments. Parents are reminded that every Catholic child should be in religious education every year they are in school, not only the year or two before receiving a sacrament. Registration forms have been mailed to all currently enrolled students. You may also pick one up at the rectory office which is now open Monday to Friday from 1 PM to 5 PM. We also are taking registration for any adult who wishes to receive their sacraments or enter the Catholic Church. Please contact Monsignor Ogle at [email protected], or speak with Deacon Rubén Mendez at the Spanish Mass. Finally, please remember there will be a second collection on the weekend of August 15-16 for the Mission School in Nigeria of Father Peter Nwadimkpa (Father PJ).

Hello from Nigeria Greetings: Dear Friends, Father Peter Nwadimkpa (PJ) sends you greetings in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. I always look forward to being with you and to share great moments together every summer. This year unfortunately, it has be-come impossible because of the virus. I pray God to protect you in His love and for a vaccine to be developed to the glory of His name. I remain ever grateful for your donations in support of our school and the kids especially those who live in the dormitory. There are improvements in the renovations of dilapidate structures. Bathrooms for general students (about 500) have been completed; current classrooms have been renovated; current work-shops have been renovated; student’s kitchen is under construction; etc. Challenges: Last year we had an increase in the number of students living in the dormitory (from 160 to 230). Most of them come from very poor families but are ready to study hard for a better future for themselves and their families. Hence there is need for a new dormitory to accommodate the increasing number of students which is currently under construction. Also the CORONAVIRUS presents a serious challenge for the school, because the available classrooms cannot accommodate the number of students following the 2 meters COVID 19 guideline. The school is under pressure for more classrooms space. To address this problem, we cannot do new classrooms but we can complete the classroom building left over the years. In order to prepare for the resumption of schools, there are COVID 19 requirements for safety of students, part of which include more space in classrooms; isolation space, constant water supply, medical equipment like infrared thermometer, medicine, sanitizers, and so on. On behalf of our students, I make a passionate appeal for your assistance and support for our school and the kids at this challenging time. I sincerely thank the Pastor Msgr. Sean and other assistant Priests. I am grateful to those who help to provide you the necessary information/photos about our school situation. I really appreciate you all and just know that you’re awesome.
