NEWSLETTER W ee k l y July 18th 2017 / Term 3 Week 2 www.roma.catholic.edu.au 1 Last Friday evening, the St John’s graduating class of 2017 attended their formal at Explorers Convention Centre. Students began their preparations for the formal earlier in the week with a Formal Etiquette lesson delivered by Mrs Nicole Anderson, Mr Ryan Doig and Mr Nathan Stone. Students learnt how to behave like ladies and gentlemen in a formal environment. Skills learnt included how to exit a car appropriately and with ladylike grace, how to be a gentleman and assist their partner out of the vehicle and down the red carpet, table manners, which cutlery to use for each course, and exactly which bread and butter plate is yours (the left side, otherwise the whole table is thrown out of order). Students practiced these skills doing so with lots of giggles, zipper checks and knees glued together. Over several weeks, students were also expected to collect their arrival details, including information about their vehicles and drivers, and communicate this to Mrs Anderson. For the first time at St John’s, we formally announced the graduates’ arrival. This process was well received by guests and parents who appreciated the anticipation and excitement that the announcements generated. Students arrived in a diverse range of vehicles and modes of transportation, and exited their vehicles with grace and decorum. Transportation included a horse and buggy, a mini fire truck, an old postie bike, a motocross race bike, V8s, vintage cars, muscle cars and even family cars. Members from the Roma community were generous in donating their vehicles for the evening and their efforts were greatly appreciated. Students elegantly walked the red carpet in their glamorous evening dresses and dashing suits, devouring the attention and praise they well deserved. Upon entering the venue, students formally introduced themselves and their partners to the principal, Mrs Shirley, Father Jamie, Sister Norah and Deputy Principal, Mr Penrose. The theme for the 2017 Formal was Enchanted Forest and the Formal Committee outdid themselves with fairy lights, flowers and a fantastic “2017” gold balloon display. The Explorers staff were impressed by the decorations and commented on this to St John’s staff members. Father Jamie led prayer and reminded us all to be mindful of those who don’t have the material blessings we do. Mrs Shirley congratulated students with an eloquent speech and finally meals were served. Afterwards, students boogied and danced the night away to music generously collated for by Gerard Treasure. The unanimous and overwhelming impression of the night was that students were not only beautifully dressed but exceptionally well behaved. The young ladies were graceful and the young men were charming. Congratulations to our graduating class of 2017! Nicole Anderson Secondary Teacher Senior Formal 2017

Last Friday evening, the St John’s graduating class of 2017

attended their formal at Explorers Convention Centre. Students

began their preparations for the formal earlier in the week with

a Formal Etiquette lesson delivered by Mrs Nicole Anderson, Mr

Ryan Doig and Mr Nathan Stone. Students learnt how to behave

like ladies and gentlemen in a formal environment. Skills learnt

included how to exit a car appropriately and with ladylike grace,

how to be a gentleman and assist their partner out of the

vehicle and down the red carpet, table manners, which cutlery

to use for each course, and exactly which bread and butter

plate is yours (the left side, otherwise the whole table is thrown

out of order). Students practiced these skills doing so with lots

of giggles, zipper checks and knees glued together.

Over several weeks, students were also expected to collect

their arrival details, including information about their vehicles

and drivers, and communicate this to Mrs Anderson. For the

first time at St John’s, we formally announced the graduates’

arrival. This process was well received by guests and parents

who appreciated the anticipation and excitement that the

announcements generated.

Students arrived in a diverse range of vehicles and modes

of transportation, and exited their vehicles with grace and

decorum. Transportation included a horse and buggy, a mini

fire truck, an old postie bike, a motocross race bike, V8s, vintage

cars, muscle cars and even family cars. Members from the

Roma community were generous in donating their vehicles for

the evening and their efforts were greatly appreciated.

Students elegantly walked the red carpet in their glamorous

evening dresses and dashing suits, devouring the attention and

praise they well deserved. Upon entering the venue, students

formally introduced themselves and their partners to the

principal, Mrs Shirley, Father Jamie, Sister Norah and Deputy

Principal, Mr Penrose. The theme for the 2017 Formal was

Enchanted Forest and the Formal Committee outdid themselves

with fairy lights, flowers and a fantastic “2017” gold balloon

display. The Explorers staff were impressed by the decorations

and commented on this to St John’s staff members.

Father Jamie led prayer and reminded us all to be mindful of

those who don’t have the material blessings we do. Mrs Shirley

congratulated students with an eloquent speech and finally

meals were served. Afterwards, students boogied and danced

the night away to music generously collated for by Gerard

Treasure.

The unanimous and overwhelming impression of the night

was that students were not only beautifully dressed but

exceptionally well behaved. The young ladies were graceful

and the young men were charming. Congratulations to our

graduating class of 2017!

Principal’s NewsDear Parents and Friends of St John’s SchoolWelcome back for Term Three; as always, we are full steam ahead. On Tuesday, the whole school was involved in the Leadership Mass. I commend the organisation of this event that ran so smoothly and the behaviour of students

which was exceptional. My thanks go to the outgoing Leadership Team for all the work they have done in the last twelve months and my congratulations to the incoming team who will be working with students and staff in the time ahead.

On Friday evening, I experienced my first St John’s Year Twelve Formal. I am sure that both parents and teachers were very proud, as these young men and women presented themselves, looking sensational and behaving beautifully. This, for the Year Twelve students, is the beginning of their ‘rite of passage’ into the next stage of their lives. While this is important students need to keep especially focused on their studies in Term Three as this is a crucial time for them.

There are many events in the time ahead, but our prime focus as always is on the teaching and learning that is happening in our classrooms. Have a great term and God Bless.Donaugh

AttendanceIn the last week of Term Two, I had the pleasure of reading all of the report cards that were sent home to parents. I would like to thank all the teachers and staff who write and support the delivery of these report cards for their care and hard work. In many of the report cards, I noticed an extensive time of absence from school. Term Two can often be a time of cold and flu but I was quite alarmed by the amount of time some students were away. This is a concern to me and something that I will be following up on vigorously this term. If you are having trouble with your child’s attendance, please contact a teacher or a person in Leadership so we can help you with this situation. Attendance is paramount to success at school.

St John’s Kindergarten This is exciting news for St John’s School. Many of you are aware of the recent survey to ascertain the interest in a Kindergarten and outside of school hours care facility. The results were very strong. We can now confirm the decision to proceed with this facility. As of 2018, there will be a Kindergarten and after school care facility on St John’s School grounds. This facility will be managed by Centracare Brisbane. Please find attached to this newsletter the official announcement letter.

Year Seven Humanities

and Statistics and Probability in Maths.

Students will learn about the topics and then complete a

step-by-step inquiry task showing knowledge and deeper

thinking skills. Their teamwork will play an important part

within the task.

We are utilising both English and Maths skills throughout the

task with the drafting and completion of a report.

Humanities for Semester One concentrated on History and

concluded with the study of Ancient Greece. The reward was a

well-earned Toga Party where the students experienced both Greek

food and culture. They have also been working hard to create a

newspaper article with The Western Star. It is due to be published

soon, so watch this space.

In Humanities this semester, Geography has been introduced and,

in particular, ‘The Water in the World’.

This topic is being delivered concurrently with The Earth’s Resources

Writing in Prep

This term in English, the Prep students will be learning about information

texts through the study of Australian animals. Within this they will be

exploring various ways to gather and present information including books,

videos, the internet and by talking with specialists. Throughout this, they

will be gathering information about various Australian animals and then will

create a multimodal information text to present the information that they

have learnt. To assist with the writing process, the Prep students will engage

in a variety of opportunities to further develop their writing knowledge and

skills. This will include modelled and guided writing sessions which will help

the Prep students build confidence and independence when writing.

MARK 26th AUGUST, 2017 IN YOUR CALENDAR

Running back and forth across

the oval with stop watches in

hand, you would think that a PE

class was checking their times for

the upcoming Athletics Carnival.

Instead, it was the Year 10 Science

students investigating a practical

application for the velocity and

acceleration calculation they have

been doing in class this past week.

Where possible, links between

real-world application are drawn

in Year 10 Science, whether it be

relating the egg drop experiment to

correctly packaging fragile objects,

or investigating the rate of chemical

reactions and relating it to the need

to refrigerate food to avoid spoilage.

7TUCKSHOPThe tuckshop is catering this Friday 21st

July for the Athletics Carnival If anyone

is available to give me a hand that day,

it would be greatly appreciated.

We will also have the back roller door

open for the Under Nine Carnival on

the St Johns oval on the Thursday. As

it is a normal tuckshop day, it would

be great if we had a few extra helpers

to help manage that side while we get

tuckshop organised. Also, we will sell

home cooking on both these days. If

anyone is able to contribute cooking, it

would be greatly appreciated.

REMINDERIt is greatly appreciated if the correct

money is put into the paper bags when

the order is placed. Change is quite

difficult to control, the protocol for

change is if it is under $2.00 we will

wrap in alfoil and put back in bag, and

anything over is left at the tuckshop and

a note is written on the bag to come

back and collect change. If the change

has not been collected, it is taken to the

office to send to the classroom.

Quite often the children will either

throw out the bag with change in it or

simply forget to collect, so the correct

money is very important. If you do not

happen to have the correct change,

please feel free to call into the tuckshop

and pay for the children’s tuckshop and

we will be able to give you the change

directly.

For families paying together, it is very

helpful if all of the orders are received

together with the money. I know each

individual child likes to put their own

tuckshop in, however, this is quite

confusing and time consuming when

we are getting the orders together.

We do allow the primary school children

to buy over the counter, however, they

will not be served until all children with

paper bags have been served and the

high schoolers have been served.

Year Eight ReligionAt the end of Term Two, Year

Eight Religion students had

the opportunity to create and

participate in a modified version

of the prayer called Liturgy of

the Hours. It was pleasing to see

all the students take part in a

genuine and respectful manner,

taking care to write appropriate

prayers and to present their

prayer space thoughtfully. This

attention to presentation enabled

others to listen deeply and reflect

meaningfully on the prayers. This

This term in HASS, (Humanities

and Social Sciences) we will be

looking at the early colonisation of

Australia and how this impacted

the development of our nation.

We will look at the first colonies

set up in each of the states and

territories. In particular, we will

be looking at the Port Jackson

and Moreton Bay settlements and

how they grew and developed

term, students will be learning

about the birth and initiation rituals

in Christianity, Islam and Judaism,

specifically researching Baptism

in Christianity and the actions

involved. This will culminate in the

production of a game as part of

the assessment. We are looking

forward to this being a lot of fun!

Rebecca Lynch, Anne Moloney and Nicole AndersonYear Eight Religion teachers

and the reasons why this needed

to happen. We will be looking at

a number of colonists who were

important to the early colonies

and why they were important. This

term, we will also be investigating

the law process in Australia and

how laws are made and passed.

AP FM NewsTerm Three has started beautifully with regard to the Religious

Life of the School! On Tuesday, we celebrated our annual St

John’s Day Mass, with a wide variety of students across the

year levels being involved in the choir, readings, entrance and

offertory processions and dancing! One of the highlights was

certainly the singing of ‘John and Jesus’, a much-loved hymn for

students across the year levels!

We also welcomed our new student leadership team for

2017/2018 and had the opportunity to thank the outgoing

leaders for all they have contributed to the life of our school.

The Mass highlighted the symbolic nature of leadership and

the role the new leaders will come to play in the Religious Life

of our school.

Children’s Liturgy

Every weekend during the term that Mass at All Saints Parish

falls on a Sunday, Children’s Liturgy is available for children,

aged 3-12. Mass begins at 8.30am. We have a huge range of

wonderful volunteers, from parishioners, parents, secondary

students and also teachers at school. Children leave Mass

after the Opening Prayer and participate in a range of activities

relating to the Gospel of that week in the Justin King Centre. The

children return to church around the time of Communion and

re-join their families. It is a fun and welcoming environment

and I would encourage students to attend if they have not

been before.

Bishop’s Inservice Day

On Wednesday, 26th July, St John’s will host around 130

teachers and support staff from Catholic schools around our

region, including St George, Chinchilla and Mitchell. There is

also a strong contingent of staff from the Toowoomba Catholic

Schools Office, including our Director, Dr Pat Coughlan. Staff

will participate in a range of talks throughout the morning

and the event culminates with Mass shared between all. This

year, our school has the opportunity to showcase areas of

excellence. We are proudly going to present the success of the

phonological awareness program to other schools and also,

Year 9 student, Maddy Thomas, will perform the song she

sang at the Showcase Spectacular, highlighting the talent of

our students at St John’s. It is a wonderful opportunity to meet

with other teachers and develop strong networks across our

diocese, whilst also exploring the significance and importance

of the Catholicity of our school.

Equestrian State Championships

Congratulations to Michaela Bates, Maddison Thomas, Brooke Boland, Teah Mayne, Jessica Angus and Sydney Bentley who represented St John’s School at the Interschool State Championships recently held in Toowoomba. The students should be exceptionally proud of their overall results, competing against up to 37 riders in some disciplines. For the majority of the students, they had only had between two – six months to get to know their horses and prepare them for States. It is a credit to their riding ability, determination and the ongoing support of their parents that they have received the results below.

They competed in a range of disciplines: Dressage, Jumping and Showman. Please see below for the summary of results:

The Woolworths ‘Earn and Learn’ program is starting again on Wednesday 26th July until 19th September 2017. This is how it works when shopping at Woolworths:

Collect the ‘Earn and Learn’ stickers. This can be anyone from our school community (staff, parents, grandparents, neighbours, friends)

Earn 1 sticker for every $10 spent at Woolworths Complete the sticker sheets or just drop the stickers into the St John’s box at Woolworths

Roma or at the St John’s Library circulation desk. For every sticker collected, Woolworths gives the school 1 point towards earning resources for our school through Modern Teaching Aids. This is a great opportunity for our school to gain valuable resources and we look forward to your continued support of this program. Jenny Eeles Teacher Librarian

Gardeners are making it happen!

Preparing for Moonlight Fair

Our gardening community have started to respond to our call for action in preparation for this year’s Moonlight Fair. We have already had parents potting things up, donating cuttings and unusual items for us to pot things into so we will have a great selection to choose from on our popular Plant Stall.

We are still hunting out a few things:

quirky containers that can be repurposed as a pot = boots clay pots jugs decorative china cups and saucers

old hand and bath towels (without holes) large tin cans cuttings and seedlings we can pot up

Bags of potting mix will also be a very welcome donation. We have plenty of plastic pots at the moment so please hold on to those for now.

Miss Khan’s Year 3 Maroon have volunteered to take on the preparation and running of the stall. They will have lots of fun this term with thinking up a name, little creative projects and potting activities.

St John’s Garden Club Getting Active

Students interested in plants and gardening can join in the extra-curricular activity offered at first break on Tuesdays when our school’s Garden Club meet. They get hands-on in activities such as transplanting plants that have self-sown around the school, going on discovery walks through the gardens, propagating plants and cutting flowers for their classrooms.

We meet with Mrs Moloney on Tuesdays at the green house, located between the Library and Science blocks, at the start of first break. Bring your lunch or join us when you’ve finished it.

Enjoy your time digging, adventuring, reading or wandering through the garden,

Mrs Anne Moloney ([email protected])

Principal’s NewsDear Parents and Friends of St

John’s,

I now believe I am becoming

totally acclimatised to the south

west. If we can all live through

the heat of the last few days,

then we can do anything. Our

thoughts and prayers are with

those families in the central

coast and western parts of New South Wales who have lost

homes and properties to the terrible fires. We thank God

that so far no lives have been lost. Nature can be beautiful

and destructive as we are all aware, in the bush. On Friday

morning, we had a Prep Parent morning tea after drop off.

This was a wonderful opportunity for myself as well as Mrs

Mulligan, Mrs Beattie and Mrs Densley to meet with parents

and talk about what is happening in Prep. Parents shared

their ideas, experiences and concerns around the first three

weeks. What was discovered was that lots of feelings were

shared by most of the parents in Prep. The first year is very

important in establishing good routines, resilience strategies,

friendships and learning skills. I will be in Toowoomba at the

Principals’ meeting towards the end of the week.

Generosity of Staff

Last week, Mr Penrose put together the Extracurricular List

for the staff at St John’s. This is where teachers take on

activities beyond their normal teaching duties. There are

three categories and teachers are expected to choose one

from each. These can range from coaching football / netball

to chess, musical, community service and much much more.

I have never been in a school where teachers give so much

of their time for the overall development of their students.

This is voluntary unpaid work and, as a principal, I am firstly

very proud of them and I thank them for this great effort. It

is things like this that make our school so great and show the

real face of Jesus to others.

Coping Strategies

This week is Week Four leading into Week Five where

students begin to tire. This has been exacerbated by the

very hot weather, which tends to make students very tired.

Be proactive in your approach, speak positively, emphasise

that preplanning for the workload is important and that

approaching tasks with a plan can always help.

BusThere seems to be a little confusion around the bus and the

teacher duty. Teachers will be on duty as follows:

Morning Bus: There will be a teacher on duty at the bus

stop each morning for the next two weeks. As of Week Six,

students will be walking to the Prep room accompanied by

their bus buddy without a teacher on duty. Over the next

couple of weeks, the teacher on duty will ensure that all Prep

students have a buddy to accompany them to the classroom.

Afternoon Bus: Beginning this week, Prep students will

be picked up from the classroom and will walk to the bus

assembly area in small groups with an allocated Year Six

student. Students will then be buddied with either siblings

or bus buddies before going to the bus stop where the bus

teacher will be on duty.

Yours sincerely,

Donaugh Shirley
