} De Pas:◦ Works with adolescent boys between 14-20 years and their family/network
in Flanders and Brussels◦ Youngsters who come from the ‘closed youth institution’ who are redirected
by the Juvenile Court } 15 guidances at the same time
In each family we do “guidance at home” at a ratio of 3 hours/week 4 places in residential care for boys who can’t live at home for the moment but
still with the focus: ‘What has to be done that the child can live at home again?’ (we make agreements with the parents how the stay of the child has to be done in our care – to make the link with the home situation as much as possible)
We focus on all the children living in the family} Multidisciplinary team: 1 team leader and 1staff member, 9

} Family with 7 children (6months – 18 years)} Father in jail and accused of murder on two family members } Mom lives with new partner and has a new baby} Eldest son (in our care) was in the closed youth institution because they
thought he was involved with the murder/not going to school/mom ‘neglected the children’
} 2 children were in other residential care (other organisation) } A lot of other youth organisations were involved in this family, everyone
with another (negative) focus: very difficult! } Judge and CPS said mother was not taking good care of her children: with
very little concrete examples ‘She was not capable’ } Judge and CPS said that the eldest son (almost 18) needed to live on his
own and could not go back to live with his mum/brothers/sisters.
} Immediately we talked with mom and asked her what she thought needed to happen/what she wanted for her family◦ Mom wanted her eldest son to live at home again (it was his wish also)
Mom was worried it would be difficult to convince the judge she was a good mother that took good care of her children. She was worried that the judge would also take her other children away from her if she didn’t agree with the conditions from the Juvenile Court.
} Mom is worried that, despite she loves her children and the children love their mom, as a mother she can not let CPS/judge see that she takes good care of her children and all their individuals needs (Davy is doing too much in the household, mom is not helping Céline enough with homework, Rik is not independent enough,…and the children are not stimulated enough in what they need. Therefore the children will not grow up in a good way, they will not do well at school, they have not enough social contact and therefore the children can not remain with mom and have to be placed in residential care.
} Mom’s goal: “Mom wants her children to live with her and wants to take good care of her children”
} 4 Family meetings within a half year – 12/15 people attended the meetings ◦ First meeting: 1 danger statement + goal + What can the network do to help
mom and her family? Start to make a plan◦ 2nd meeting: 2nd danger statement (about eldest son)+ what is mom doing
already good for her children and how is she a good mom to them/how we see that? Continue plan
◦ 3rd meeting: What specific needs does each child have (7) + who wants to be the ‘safety person’ for each child? + continue to make the plan together; Asking questions about: who will do what so the kids get what they need whatever
happens.◦ 4th meeting: is the plan working well (testing)? + who did what? +
Monitoring+ 5th meeting planned as a follow up – case closed : eldest living home again!

} Mom and Dad divorced} Two boys, 12 and 14 years old } Mom lung cancer diagnosed spring 2014
(multiple admissions in hospital)} Dad not capable to take care of the boys } July-august 2014: multiple admissions of the
boys in several institutions} The 20th of august 2014: admission MFC
Traject
} Psychological problems of mom and dad and kids being left alone◦ Complicating factor: lung cancer mom
} Important to talk with the kids} Very difficult to talk with them about their
feelings
} Using word and pictures to talk with them about situations that were difficult or important
} Example W&P to inform them about why they were taken into residential care
} To adjust the methods to the interests of the boys
} To make the methods more visual: for example: working with Urbanus ( a famous Flemish comic ) instead of using the three houses
} We wanted to install a network◦ So we did the safety circles with the parents◦ With the children Ine and Karen tried a different
approach: ‘cartoon network’
} Cartoon Network: Characters from some of their favourite cartoons shown on Cartoon Network, a Dutch television channel
} Draft } Adjustable to the client } Content:◦ Three boards: dream world, fun world and underworld ◦ Question-cards for each world
About life (pleasant things and difficulties), dreams, safety people,… Exception-questions, scale-questions, relation-questions,
} Possible players: ◦ Children (perhaps above 8 years old), youth, parents, family,
friends, safety people, …} Goal: ◦ Based on three houses◦ To get a better perception on the problems, the good things and
the future of your client◦ In a fun and playful way◦ Interaction between players
} The children created a time line together with Ine and Karen in preparation of making an historical W&P with the parents.
} Interview with the workers Karen Buttiens and Ine Cardoen
