26 | Rumble at the Big House High school wrestling wound up the 2013 season with the state tournaments. And, once again, Three Rivers wrestlers proved to be the Kings of the Mat.

30 | 3-Peat Fort Gibson girls swimmers ruled the competition at the Class 5A State Swimming Championships as the Lady Tigers captured the team title for a third straight year.

One For The Ages! The end of the winter sports season brought about some exciting moments and no doubt memories that will last a lifetime. The Class 4A boys’ basketball final was a classic battle with both teams displaying a refuse to lose mentality. The play of Roland’s Seth Youngblood and OC Douglass standout Stevie Parker was sensational. The Class 4A girls’ tournament

proved that defense wins championships as the Lady Tigers of Fort Gibson implemented a blue collar defensive prowess and won the big gold ball for the 2nd time in three years.

Jadon Davenport and Cale Wilson of Sallisaw and freshman Wyatt Sheets proved to be the kings of the mats by winning individual titles at the state wrestling championships proving the hard work and determination can make dreams come true.

The domination in the pool continues for the girls’ swim team at Fort Gibson by winning not only the team title but also the academic championship for a third straight year.

The heartbreaking moment that will forever be remembered occurred in the opening round of the Class 3A boys basketball championships when Hugo’s Trey Johnson scored two points at the buzzer for the wrong team giving Millwood new life to win the state championship. I just hope that Johnson gets a second chance to be a hero.

What an exciting end to the season. But, with the extended hours of daylight bringing on the start of spring sports, all I can say about this time of the year is… “Play Ball!”

Ryan HelsleySequoyah-Tahlequah High School As a three-sport athlete, Ryan Helsley understands the importance of commitment. No matter what sport or what situation, Helsley lays claim first to his personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

“Temptations are around every corner,” said Helsley, who plays baseball, basketball and football at Sequoyah High School. “Your friends sometimes are doing things and it’s easy to take the bait. But for me, the strength I find in knowing Christ gets me through every situation. Little things like reading the Bible every morning always makes my day go better.”

“It helps me to be an influence to others,” Helsley confirmed. “And that’s not always easy when you try to explain the joy of knowing Jesus Christ. You just have to trust in Him and know that he has a game plan for your life, no matter what the score.”

Basketball teams in Three Rivers Territory…are built TOUGH…

The crack of the bat…the ball popping in the leather glove…the umpire’s call…”Safe”…the sights and sounds of spring sports around the baseball and softball fields. It’s time to throw out the first pitch…VYPE Three Rivers presents this month’s VYPE FAB FIVE as we rank the top five baseball and softball teams in search of a state championship.

1. Poteau – The Pirates have charged to the top spot to open the season with Jay Werner, Blake Johnson and Michael Didway leading the effort.

2. Vian – Landon Decker and Shawn Troutman head the lineup for the Wolverines who return seven starters from last season.

3. Gore – The Pirates boast a strong hitting lineup and solid defense as Chance Douthit and Kolby Clay continue to display talents on the diamond.

4. Hilldale – After winning the Class 4A title last season, the Hornets are filling graduation losses with another talented lineup including pitching hero Hunter Harrison and speedy Miles Jackson.

5. Wister – The Wildcats are accustomed to winning and 2013 should be no different with Corey Bullard and Jesse Hammonds just two of the heroes.

1. Muskogee – With nine starters back from last spring’s lineup, the Lady Roughers pose power plus defense with Jessie Venable, Hannah Alexander, Dee Dee Emarthle, Paige Gann and Shaylee Rowland leading the way.

2. Tahlequah – Coach Matt Cloud’s squad features defense and hard hitting offensive firepower as five starters return from last season led by Randee O’Donnell, Kirsten Chase, Bub Peters, Marissa Girdner and Brittney Johnson.

3. Sequoyah Tahlequah – The Lady Indians are focused on a return to the state tournament with experience in the lineup led by Mariah Hooper and Baylee Ratliff.

4. Poteau – The Lady Pirates boast a talented lineup with Shelby Standridge swinging the bat along with Sunni McConnell for coach Misty Collins.

5. Stilwell – The Lady Indians have plenty of firepower to be a force in Class 6A including the talents of Kara Muskrat, Jamie Marshall and Sylver Price-Collins.

The VYPE Fab Five ranking may well see some changes as the season continues and local teams settle the question of which teams are the best choice for a solid gold “championship season.”

A three year member of the Lady Roughers golf team, Sydnie Rosson is a junior at Muskogee High School. Playing as the number one bag for coach Kevin Hogue’s squad, Sydnie is an avid sports fan including Roughers’ soccer and football. Rosson is the 2013 Junior class treasurer as well as a member of the Science Club and Young Republicans. Rosson, who plans to pursue a career in petroleum engineering, enjoys reading in her free time including anything by J.K. Rowling (Harry Potter series). “I’m pretty much an open book,” smiled Rosson, who has a twin sister (Sara). “I’m deathly afraid of spiders and the dark. I run and jump into my bed every night because I “think” there’s a pirate hiding underneath.”

While attending VYPE media day at Midwest Sporting Goods, VYPE caught up with Sydnie Rosson of Muskogee High School to answer questions for Triple Play. After getting her answers, we posed the questions to Sydnie’s mom, Shari, for her answers before posing the challenge to Kevin Hogue, head coach of the Lady Roughers golf team. THE BEAT GOES ONThe Eufaula High School Band continues its march to win a 7th straight OSSAA Sweepstakes trophy as the Ironhead concert band achieved three Superior-I scores during the District contest at Konawa. With their perfect scores, the 85 member Ironhead band now advances to the State championship at Ada in April. Glenn Sizemore, director of bands, and assistant Mike Palmer have the EHS band fine tuned in order to win another Sweepstakes Trophy but the band will now need Superior ratings in stage performance and sight reading to make it 7 in a row for Eufaula. This year’s senior band members, many who have been in the band since the sixth grade have captured the OSSAA Sweepstakes Trophy every year.

IRONHEAD STRONGFour members of Eufaula’s powerlifting squad qualified for the OFCA State Powerlifting Championships. Matt Beard (220lbs) finished 3rd while Brandon Mullins (157lbs) was 4th, Dillon Hale (123lbs) finished 5th and Colton Walker (242lbs) placed 6th during the regional meet at Hartshorne.

TIME TO TEE IT UPAs the clock springs forward, the high school golf season begins for the girls and boys golf teams. Both squads will compete in tournament play en route to the Class 3A regional and state tournaments.

Home is where the heart is…and for Eddie Lewis…Roland is and has always been home. From his childhood days to his current position as the head boys basketball coach for his “Runnin’ Rangers”, Lewis credits his career of wins to the influence of the Sequoyah County community that will always be his home.

“I guess I’ve been fortunate to have been able to coach in the same town where I grew up,” said Lewis. “And, any success that my teams as well as myself may have achieved belongs to the people of this area.”

“I’ve had a lot of help,” admits Lewis, who began his tenure as head basketball coach in 1982. “I owe credit to my former coach Bob Traw for giving me the inspiration to get into coaching. I was playing football way back then and Coach Traw gave me a book and told me to read it. It was the how to’s of coaching. I figured that if he believed that coaching would be a good fit, then that’s what I was going to do.”

“When I graduated, I went to Westark (now Arkansas-Ft. Smith) and then to NSU,” recalled Lewis. “I told the advisors that I was going to be a coach so help me enroll in the classes that would get me there.”

“Pat Martin, who became the coach at Roland my senior year, let me help coach the teams in the summertime,” recalled Lewis. “Then after I graduated, our principal, Gary Lattimore, gave me a chance.”

“I also know that my assistants are just as much of the reason we’ve won so many games here at Roland as I am. I’m glad they have shared their lives with me.”

“My philosophy is fairly simple,” said Lewis. “Do what we do best and everything will take care of itself. Sometimes you’re lucky as a coach to have great talent. Then, there’s years where your kids just work their tails off and give it all everyday. That’s all you can ask.”

“Since I got the head job in 1982, basketball has changed a lot, and for the better. The 3-point line has made a huge difference. And the way you can specialize players in the post and the perimeter has made for a better game.”

There’s another part of the road to success in the life of Eddie Lewis. His biggest fans have always been his family. It’s part of the team that coach

cherishes most.

“My wife (Connie) has always been my biggest cheerleader,” said Lewis in an emotion filled voice. “She’s the reason I can do what I do. As a coach, you spend so much time away from home. Connie raised my daughter (Kimberly) and son (Brandon). When I came home, she never complained when I’d take over the TV looking for another way to win.”

“My kids are special to me too. Kim was my assistant for three years. Brandon hasn’t got into coaching yet, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he takes the plunge one day.”

So, after 30-plus seasons on the bench, what remains for the veteran coach of the Rangers?

“I’ve still got the excitement,” said Lewis with energy. “It’s been a great ride and I’m nowhere ready to think about retirement. Heck, if I leave this job, I’d probably have to get a real job. I sure don’t want to do that.”

“I’ve been fortunate in so many ways,” smiled Lewis. “I’d hope that my players will always remember that we worked hard and played hard. Most of all, they’ll know that I cared about them, not just as players but also about their success in life.”

With a lifelong commitment to work ethic and a commitment for success, fans can expect the winning ways to continue for the Runnin’ Rangers with Eddie Lewis on the bench, still sporting his favorite colors, Roland orange.

The road to the Big House was well traveled as nine teams from Three Rivers advanced the OSSAA State Basketball Championships. And, as the final seconds clicked off the clock, two teams in Class 4A, Fort Gibson girls and Roland boys, were chasing the gold medal. And, for the second time in last three years, the Lady Tigers used a blue collar like determination to return home with the “big gold ball.”

After losing in the title game in 2012, Fort Gibson reclaimed the 4A crown with a 58-43 win over Mount Saint Mary’s. The Tigers, who won the 2011 championship with an undefeated season, have now reached the finals six times in the past eight years.

Coach Jerry Walker’s squad did it with old-fashioned defense. The Lady Tigers held VYPE Top 100 players Charlotte Roof (Weatherford) and Che’Ron Lewis (Cushing) to seven and two points, respectively, to reach the finals for the third straight year.

Factor in that Fort Gibson held St. Mary’s Kaely Bond – who had 43 points in the Rockets first two games – to two points as well and it’s easy to see how defense played a role in the title run.

“We held the top three scorers from each team to a total of 11 points,” Fort Gibson coach Jerry Walker said.

Senior forward Brooke Palmer recorded a double-double with 21 points and 13 rebounds while Fort Gibson teammates Allie Glover added 12 points and VYPE Top 100 guard Savannah Gray chipped in eight points and 10 rebounds in the championship game.

The Tigers’ trio joined teammate Taylor London on the All-Tournament team.

Palmer, the tournament MVP, led the Lady Tigers in scoring all three games, finishing with 64 points.

Walker pointed to the team’s ability to refocus following an Area Tournament loss to Byng as the difference.

“We had been kind of spoiled in that the previous eight years we won the Friday night (winner’s bracket) game of Area,” Walker said. “I’ve grown up a coach’s kid and when you lose there’s a lot of tears shed. After we lost, we went back to the gym, had pizza and talked about Saturday’s game. We did not talk about the Byng game again.

The Runnin’ Rangers of Roland and Muldrow Bulldogs were among the eight teams battling for the Class 4A boys crown. In what may become an instant classic, second-ranked Douglass got 51 points from Oklahoma State signee Stevie Clark to edge top-ranked Roland 82-80 and win its fourth consecutive state championship.

Equally impressive was the offensive exploits of Roland’s Seth Youngblood, a VYPE Top 100 selection, who poured in 41 points for the Rangers. Both players were on fire from beyond the 3-point line, draining nine treys.

“From the coaching standpoint, and for the players and the fans, the last game was special,” said Roland coach Ed Lewis. “It was fun to coach and I’m sure it was fun to watch. We had several chances at the end to win the ball game.”

“The first quarter was a good as it gets,” recalled Lewis. “Seth and Stevie were kinda playing the game with the approach anything you can do, I can do better.”

“We approached the state tournament with the belief of “do what you do” best. Every one of our players, Seth plus Brooks (Robertson), Gunner (Lynch), and Austin (Cantrell) left it all out there. Corey (Whisenant), Marcus (Chestnut), Jordan (Brock) and Michael (Byrd) were all a part of our success this year.

Roland, which finished the season at 28-2, had three players named to the All-Tournament team including Youngblood, Robertson and Whisenant.

The Muldrow Bulldogs were among those chasing the 4A boys title. All-VYPE selection Nate Hamilton and teammates dropped a first round encounter to the eventual champion, Douglass, to finish the season at 20-9.

Sequoyah-Tahlequah is another area school with a tradition rich basketball history. And, after a three year absence from the state tournament, the Indians returned to both the girls and boys Class 3A state tournaments.

Coach Jay Herrin’s boys team, after

a stunning defending of 2012 state champion Centennial in the area tournament to advance to Oklahoma City, used an 18-0 run during the first half to oust Sperry in the opening round. The Indians had nine 3-point baskets in the win.

In the semi-finals, the Indians saw Class 3A’s No. 2-ranked Okemah Panthers scorched the nets for a 54% shooting spree en route to the 55-35 win and end Sequoyah’s season with a 20-9 mark.

The championship game turned into a marathon as Millwood outlasted Okemah 59-53 in triple overtime to claim the 3A championship, the 15th in the Falcons’ school history.

A roller-coaster season of emotions for the Lady Indians in 2013 was eventually rewarded with a state tournament berth. In the opening round, Sequoyah faced unbeaten Adair. Perhaps with a memory of a 2007 title loss to the Lady Indians coupled with a 2008 setback in the semifinals, the Lady Warriors overpowered coach Larry Shade’s team 61-39 as All-VYPE performer Courtney Jones ended the season with a 20-9 campaign.

The 3A girls crown featured two undefeated teams as Sulphur won gold with the 42-34 verdict over Perkins-Tryon.

Talihina advanced to the Class 2A boys state tournament seeking to win the title the Golden Tigers had won in 2011. With just two seniors on the roster, the Golden Tigers faced fifth-ranked Latta in the opening round. Despite the efforts of senior guard Clark Austin, coach Darian Dickson’s team dropped a 58-43 setback to finish the year at 19-9.

Latta would eventually win the 2A boys gold ball with a 58-41 win over Haworth.

The Northeast Lady Vikings capped off an undefeated season at 30-0 to win the Class 2A girls crown with a 53-36 victory over Alva.

Keeping with the tradition of success, the Eagles of Red Oak returned to the Class B championships with both teams among the field of entries.

After narrowly missing the tournament a year ago, the Red Oak boys’ team proved they belonged this year with a 56-39 victory over Fargo in the opener. Coach Trey Booth’s squad, with three seniors including Devan Crose, Dylan Fazekas and Tanner Crockett, saw its dream of gold end in the semi-finals with a 69-62 setback to Coyle. The Eagles finished the year at 27-4.

A phenomenal second half effort from VYPE Top 100 selection, Tyler Tune, propelled Arnett to the state championship with a 71-60 over Coyle.

Despite a rash of setbacks including late-season injuries, the Tahlequah Lady Tigers showed their determination to achieve the unexpected. After winning the Class 5A area tournament, Tahlequah faced Midwest City Carl Albert in the opening round.

Coach Chad Walker’s team got inspired play to take a first half lead before the Lady Titans rallied to earn a 44-37 win and close the year for Tahlequah with a 15-10 record.

In Class 6A girls, Edmond Santa Fe’s Lady Wolves search for a third straight championship ended in the semi-finals where eventual champion Booker T. Washington eliminated the defending 6A champ 72-70.

The Lady Hornets closed the season with a 15-game winning streak in the state finals with a 52-46 win over Bixby.

The Class 6A boys championship included dramatic last-second finishes. After a 3-point win in the opening round, Edmond Memorial had to survive a double overtime 53-50 classic against Owasso to reach the championship against top-ranked Midwest City.

Throughout the final two weeks of action, there were an unlimited number of “shining moments” for high school basketball teams in the chase for the gold ball. And, in tradition-like manner, teams from Three Rivers would once again prove to be “Oklahoma’s Best”.

Gold medals were the top prize at the OSSAA State Wrestling Championships involving teams and individuals from Three Rivers. Eleven schools advanced qualifiers to the two day event in Oklahoma where three individuals claimed first place finishes along with five wrestlers earning the silver medal at their respective weight division. Four other wrestlers battled back through the consolation rounds to claim the bronze medal during action at the State Fairgrounds Arena.

Class 4A wrestling produced the trio of state champions out of the five local teams competing. Sallisaw qualified five individuals for state including Jadon Davenport at 195 pounds who won gold for a second year

in a row combining a fall and a technical fall to reach the finals where the Black Diamonds junior earned a 5-1 decision for the title and complete a 23-0 season record. Cale Wilson raced through three bouts at 182 pounds winning by decision including an impressive 6-1 win in the championship round. Chance Blount at 132 pounds and Gabe Taylor at 138 pounds each picked up third place medals for coach Darrell Hume’s squad that finished third behind 4A champion Tuttle.

“We made a change in our order,” said Hume. “Before the regionals, we bumped Cale to

the 182-pound division and it certainly paid off. I’m proud of the way Cale and Jadon got the job done.

Overall, all of our kids wrestled well both weeks. And, we get most of them back again next year.”

The other gold medal belongs to the new kid on the mat from Stilwell as freshman sensation Wyatt Sheets completed an undefeated season at 42-0 with three wins at 126 pounds, including a 5-2 decision in the championship round.

Poteau and Wagoner tied for ninth place overall in the team race. Tyler Tustin’s bid for a third consecutive gold medal came up short as Poteau’s 138-pounder recorded a technical fall and a pin in the opening rounds before dropping a hard fought 3-1 decision in the finals. a combined 42-2 record. Devan Anderson gave the Pirates, who qualified four for state, their other top performance with a 4th place at 120 pounds.

Coach Micco Charbonneau’s Wagoner squad included only seven wrestlers after an injury to Travis Greer at 106 pounds forced the Bulldogs’ senior to withdraw from the meet. Brad Boswell used a pair of falls in the first three minutes of action during the 145-pound consolation round action to reach the finals before dropping an 8-5 decision to finish the year at 32-6. Roman Rodriguez used a major decision verdict over Stilwell’s Malachi Wood to reach the 182-pound consolation finals before dropping a 3-1 verdict and ending the season with a 31-6 mark.

Fort Gibson advanced a trio of wrestlers to state topped by the performance of Andrew Brestel at 285 pounds. The Tigers’ senior recorded a fall in the second round before losing a tightly contested 3-1 decision in the

gold medal round to complete his senior season with a 30-3 campaign.

Class 3A competition produced four medals as wrestlers from Vian and Hulbert joined Webbers Falls and Keys in the two-day meet. The Wolverines, who qualified four wrestlers, claimed a pair of silver medals including 220 pound senior Tre Locust recording a pair of falls on his way to the gold medal action and a 24-2 campaign. Rowdy Simon recorded a fall in his opening match at 182 pounds en route to the championship rounds where he dropped a 3-1 verdict and closed his career with a senior season record of 29-5. Cale Mays earned a fall in his first match at

195 and then battled through the consolation rounds to finish in fourth place with a 28-6 mark.

In Class 6A, Muskogee sent seven wrestlers into battle and finished with three medals for their efforts and an eighth place finish behind state champion Edmond North. Jacobe Smith wrapped up a sensational junior season at 42-2 and claiming the silver medal at 152 pounds using a fall and a decision in the first two matches before missing out on the gold medal with a 4-3 decision in the finals. Dawaylon Barnes battled through the consolation round action at 138 pounds to finish third with a 1-0 decision to take the bronze medal and conclude his junior campaign at

Over the past four years, Tyler Tustin has dominated his opponents on the wrestling mat. The Poteau High School senior has used a mental approach to each match while recording 168 victories and only eight losses. This season, Tustin competed at 138 pounds resulting in a combined record of 42-2 while earning the silver medal at the Class 4A state tournament.

Following a third place finish as a freshman, Tustin won the gold medal at 130 pounds with a 44-1 record. As a junior for the Pirates, Tustin repeated the state championship effort with a 47-and-1 mark.

“I try to approach each match the same way,” said Tustin while referencing his technical style of competition. “I don’t get too excited and just try to block out all the distractions around me and get the job done.”

Tustin, who also played football for Poteau, is a champion in the classroom with a 4.0 grade point average.

Tahlequah made good use of their four entries against the 5A field as the Tigers put a trio of wrestlers into the championship round action. Hestin Lamons used an 8-1 decision to claim the bronze medal at 145 pounds and complete a 30-7 season while Reese Davis claimed third place with a 9-3 win in the consolation finals to end the year at 24-10. Mitch Sellars earned a fourth place finish for the Tigers and wrapped up a 28-8 season record. Tahlequah finished 10th overall behind state champion Collinsville.

At the Dual State championships, Muskogee proved its overall team strength battling their way to the Class 6A finals. Coach Bobby Jefferson’s squad advanced to the semi-finals by defeating Southmoore 34-31 in the opening round. The Roughers rallied from behind and got a matching winning decision by Chase Soper to defeat Broken Arrow 28-27. In the finals, Muskogee built an early lead but could not hold off Edmond North for the title dropping a 43-28 decision to the Huskies.

In Class 4A, the Wagoner Bulldogs advanced to the semi-final round by ousting Piedmont 34-17 in round one. Coach Micco Charbonneau’s grapplers narrowly missed the championship round losing 33-27 to Vinita. Tuttle claimed the championship with a 43-10 win over Vinita.

In Class 3A, coach Jason Adams’ team made three straight trips to Dual State. The Wolverines came out strong with a 43-29 win over Plainview before dropping a 42-27 contest to Perry, the eventual state champion.

Back-to-back-to back…the Fort Gibson Lady Tigers swim team captured the Class 5A Academic State Championship for a third consecutive season. These sixteen student athletes proved their dedication to academics and swimming with a combined 3.82 GPA to match their efforts in the pool where Fort Gibson won a 3rd straight team title.

Members of the 2013 varsity roster include seniors Hannah Cantrell, Kelsey Longpine and Hali Martin. Juniors include Leslie White, Whitney Stroup, Audrey Ross, Kyla Martin, Kimber Goodwin and Eryn Maplethorpe. Sophomore members are Lexi Gilliam, Shelby Jackson and Taylor Pratt. Freshmen swimmers include Sara Nichols, Lauren Martin, Meg Garner and Lyndsay Warren. The Tigers are coached by Connie Dean along with assistants Trent Rose and Barva Herzog.

One is good…twice is nice…but three times is terrific…when it comes to swimming at Fort Gibson High School. The Lady Tigers made it three in a row by once again capturing the Class 5A State Swimming Championship. And, just like the past two years, the girls’ swim team also earned the Class 5A Academic State Championship.

In the water, Coach Connie Dean’s team outpaced the field including a new state record in the 200 freestyle relay. The quartet of Kyla Martin, Whitney Stroup, Leslie White and Hannah Cantrell eclipsed the previous mark, set by Fort Gibson in 2010, touching the wall in the championship time of 1:46.34.

“As a senior, that was my last race,” recalled Cantrell. “I was so excited, I wanted to cry right there in the pool. To break the state record was unbelievable.”

Junior standout Leslie White captured a pair of gold medals by repeating last year’s first place finish in the 100 breaststroke in the time 1:08.96 while also winning the 200IM gold medal

with a time of 2:16.66. Both events were personal bests for White, and new school records at Fort Gibson.

The seven girls’ efforts resulted in a team total of 299 points to finish ahead of second place Stillwater by 39 points. While two seniors, Hali Martin and Hannah Cantrell, finished their career with 3 gold medals, a talented group of underclassmen anticipate another shot at the title next year including this year’s qualifiers including White, Whitney Stroup, Kyla Martin, Audrey Ross and Sara Nichols.

“We had a target on our backs,” said Cantrell. “But, we also could feel the support of our fans cheering us on. It was awesome to repeat for a third time.”

“We felt the pressure from the first event in the prelims,” admitted Hali Martin. “It’s a huge relief to have done it again, and it’s awesome to pass it along to next season.”

girls swim team captured their third consecutive state and academic state titles, Dean let the girls have a little fun.

“We had done so well in the prelims, I let them wear the tutu’s they had made,” Dean said. “That was their swagger I guess.”

The championship effort in the pool was equally matched in the classroom as the Lady Tigers won the 5A Academic State title for a 3rd straight year with a composite 3.82 GPA.

“Winning both championships for a third straight year,” smiled Fort Gibson coach Connie Dean, “is wonderful. It’s proof of just how hard these girls work, in the pool as well as the classroom. I’m so proud of every one of them.”

Fort Gibson’s boys swim team placed 7 swimmers in the two day competition held at the Jenks Aquatic Center. Collectively, the group finished in fourth place with 199 points as Bixby won its third title in the past four years.

Junior swimmer Brandon Walker claimed the silver medal in the 100 freestyle while sophomore James Huggins earned the bronze in the 200 freestyle.

Just like the girls, the Tigers return five qualifiers next season while seniors,

Chris Huggins and Derek Cookson, wrap up their career. Joining Walker and Huggins next season will be Dalton Martin, Myles Wood and Connor Schaap.

Actions speak louder than words…a simple phrase with proven meaning. For Westville High School senior Jaci Blackwood, actions are what matters most whether in sports competition or living life everyday.

“There’s only one way I know how to do things,” said Blackwood. “If its worth doing, then do it with all you got. When you approach things with the right attitude and a commitment to do your best, it works out most of the time.”

Blackwood is always looking for the opportunity to be a part of the solution. A member of the cheerleading, basketball, soccer and golf teams, the compassionate Blackwood is proof that character counts.

“Jaci is a kind and sensitive young lady,” confirmed Staci Heustis, cheerleading coach at Westville. “She always takes the feelings of others into consideration before her own desires.”

“Everyone has a bad day,” said Blackwood. “So whether it’s in practice, a game or anywhere else, I try to help those I meet have a better day.”

“Jaci is always willing to help and is truly a ‘cheerleader” of her fellow students, even out of uniform,” said Heustis.

In addition to her involvement in sports, Blackwood is a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council, Arvest Leadership Board, Educational Talent Search, Safety Committee, FFA and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

“Character is about what you do for others,” said Blackwood, who also devotes a part of her week to volunteer at the Hope Center in Westville that provides food and other necessities to those in

need.

“Jaci is the role model for everyone to follow,” said Renae Price, principal at Westville High School. “Her work ethic coupled with her courtesy to others is truly remarkable. In everything she does, Jaci takes the initiative to get the job done.”

“Within her team, Jaci’s word stands tall,” acknowledged Price. “Her word stands as proof her integrity. And, Jaci is the same compassionate person everyday, no matter the situation.”

“I try to always see the opportunity to help someone,” said Blackwood. “Sometimes people just need someone to listen. And, when you can take a minute and put a smile on your face, it can make the day better for someone. In those special moments, I find satisfaction and a boost to my day too.”

“Jaci is a living example of character,” said Staci Grooms, Blackwood’s soccer coach for the Lady Yellowjackets. She can diffuse any situation with a soft spoken voice that’s genuine. Jaci continuously looks to give her teammates and classmates the attention needed and celebrates when others achieve success.”

“What you do is who you really are,” said Blackwood. “When you can find a way to help others to be successful or survive through the tough times, everything works out.”

Past performance is a true measure of future opportunities for success. No doubt, the day by day efforts of Jaci Blackwood give hope for a forecast of victories.

Stilwell High School proved it had plenty of muscle as the Indians captured the Class 4A Powerlifting State Championship. The event, sponsored by the Oklahoma Football Coaches Association, proved to be a nail biter as coach Josh Eubanks’ team racked up 15 team points to edge second place Cleveland by a single point.

Powerlifting competition includes 3 events consisting of the dead lift, squat and bench press with athletes in eleven different weight classes. Points are earned in each event and weight class for first through fifth place.

Stilwell junior Dillon Duval used a first place finish in the 157 pound class bench press competition

with a lift of 280 pounds to achieve a combined weight total of 1090 pounds to earn third place points.

Paco Sam completed a dead lift of 345 pounds on his way to a combined total of 755 for the event and a fifth place individual finish. Taylor Halley, a 132 pound senior, earned points in the squat lift competition along with Jack Hudgins in the 242 pound class and Lane Johnson in the 275 pound division.

Other state qualifiers included Javier Prejo (123), Taylor Lawson

(123), Dylon Martin (132), Jesus Garcia (157), Jose Saravia (168), Zach Jordan (181), Cody White (198) and heavyweight Carlos Alvarado.

“The number of qualifiers we had at state were an advantage for us,” said Eubanks. “Our workouts are an Olympic style. These kids come to the weight room everyday with a purpose and intensity. When they won the regional title, they weren’t going to be satisfied until they got the team championship at state.”
