First Sunday of Advent

the Commemoration of the Solemn Feast of All Soul’s Day is often overshadowed by two days that precede it - Halloween and All Saints Day. Our Catholic faith teaches: “All who die in God’s grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven” (CCC 1030). This purification is the essence of purgatory. Our relationship with our deceased relatives and friends do not end at their death. All Soul’s day and the month of November give us the opportunity to pray continuously for them and for all souls in purgatory to help free them of their sins and expedite their entrance into heaven. In All Souls celebration, the Church and its members (you and I) intercede for the Church suffering (our deceased relatives and friends).

O ur readings today offer immense consolations for anyone who has buried a loved one. I am consoled as I reflect on the death of my younger brother who left this world at an early age to meet the Lord. The loss of a loved one is

painful experience and takes time to heal. All Soul’s Day is an opportunity to remember and honor that loss. The First Reading from the Book of Wisdom helps us address this pain and reminds us that all is not lost and to have hope because: Our deceased loved ones are “in the hands of God”. It assures us that they are greatly blessed. “Their hope is full of immortality”. This gives us a reason to hope, to believe, to struggle and to live especially as our Responsorial Psalm 23, one of the most comforting of all psalms assures us that The Lord is our shepherd, we shall not lack anything. The Gospel Reading from St. John has Jesus assuring us that “it is God’s desire that everyone will come to join Him in eternal life”. He further assures us that this is the will of my Father that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life and I shall raise him on the last day”. These readings offer us immense hope and confidence that our loved ones though in death remain with us. All of us, living and dead, are claimed by Christ. Through birth, life, and death we belong to Christ. Through Christ, we are all reunited again in heaven, a place where we no longer face sadness or danger and experience complete joy with the Lord. What a great source of consolation for each of us especially those of us who have lost family members, relatives and friends as we celebrate All Soul’s Day. Do not forget: It is good and wholesome to pray for the dead; by so doing atonement is made for their sins ( 2 Maccabees 12:46).

The faithful departed in purgatory depend on us for relieving their pain in purgatory and for their transition into heaven. They are in a sort of waiting room of heaven, a place of preparation where all taint of sin has to be cleaned. They are within reach of the loving arms of Jesus but not close enough within His embrace to enjoy complete union with Jesus. Since the souls in purgatory cannot pray for themselves or shorten their time in purgatory through good works they depend on us to assist them. Praying for them therefore is a spiritual works of mercy that we should undertake. Our prayers will help them shorten their time in purgatory so that they can be with Jesus in heaven.

W e can greatly help the faithful departed by our works of charity, praying for them, offering Masses

for their benefit, making reparations and penances and offering our suffering for the remission of their sins. These sacrifices are the best way we can show our love for those who have gone before us and await their encounter with God. When we do this, we also benefit ourselves by shortening our own passage through the waiting room to heaven!

Twice the benefit! On this special day, and in fact all of November, let’s take a few minutes each day to remember and pray for our deceased loved ones and all of the soul’s in purgatory, especially those souls who have no one to pray for them.

Catholics In Action

CIA is a community of youth who desire to become closer to God by living the faith through prayer, study and service. “We put these works into action.”

National Vocation Awareness Week: November 2-8, 2014

NVAW is an annual week-long celebration of the Catholic Church in the United States dedicated to promote vocations to the priesthood, diaconate, and consecrated life through prayer and education, and to renew our prayers and support for those who are considering one of these particular vocations. (www.usccb.org/vocations)

Vocations in General:

Vocation to priesthood, permanent diaconate, and religious life: Some people are called to a “religious vocation” - specifically, that of ordained ministry in the priesthood, permanent diaconate, or vowed life as a brother or sister.

◊ Religious congregations (or communities): There are groups of men and of women whose members are devoted to lives of prayer and apostolic ministry. Each community is dedicated to a specific charism rooted in the life of the founder and in the needs of the historical period in which the community was established.

◊ Cloistered communities: Some congregations of men and women are devoted to the charism of contemplative prayer. Their daily lives of prayer and work take place in cloisters, monasteries, or convents which they seldom leave.

–“Catechist” October 2014

The CIA is sent out on mission: to live out the Gospel, to be Jesus’ witnesses, and to work for the coming of the kingdom:

• Sunday, November 2: 5:00 pm Youth mass, Fellowship, and 7:00 pm Adoration “Could you not watch one hour with me?” (Matthew 26:40)

• Friday, November 7: CIA meeting 7:00 pm in P1/P3

assistance or provide the information to those who could benefit from our food distribution service.

NEXT WEEKEND, our parish will take up the Collection for the Archdiocese for the Military Services (AMS). The guiding mission of the AMS is to provide the sacraments and the re-affirming Word of Christ to the men and women serving in our Armed Forces, patients in VA Medical Centers, civilians working for the federal government beyond U.S. borders, and the families of these populations. To provide these services, they need your help. The AMS receives no federal funding.

The image of the Sacred Heart is shown as surmounted by a cross, pierced and crowned with thorns, depicting His wounded Heart of love: His burning thirst and ardent desire for our love, His call for reparation for our failure to return His love. This image suggests that we can console His wounded Heart by making a return of love. In short, this traditional image of the Sacred Heart is Jesus is calling us back to Himself: calling us to love Him back, calling us to make that response of love in which our sanctification and beatitude ultimately consist, in return for all His tender, affectionate, and wounded love for us.

The Image of The Divine Mercy emphasis is not so much on the movement from us to Christ, but more from Him to us. Christ is graciously taking the initiative, seeking us out in the darkness with rays of His merciful love. He is shown walking toward us, coming to find us -stepping forward with rays of merciful love, His hand raised with a blessing of peace even before we ask for it. Jesus said to St. Faustina: Be not

afraid of your Savior, O sinful soul. I make the first move to come to you, for I know by yourself you are unable to lift yourself to Me (Diary, 1485). Here what Christ calls us to do is simply to receive His grace trustfully: "Jesus I trust in You."
