• Define switch
• Understand how a computer network looks like and works
Objectives
Your task:Take notes on the <Networking Then and Now>
document as you discuss the following questions.

the internet in the past? What about today?
● How many computers do you think made up a

Your task:● Discuss what a router is.
○ The “brain” of a computer network. It controls which device receives what data.
● Discuss what a switch is.
○ A device that sends traffic where it needs to go.
● Discuss what a device is.
○ Any device that needs to connect to the internet to function or use some functions.
Networking
Network ExampleA local area network (LAN) is a group of devices in one physical area connected to the same router/switch. This can be seen at your school, home, or at the airport.
Your task:● In groups, create a visual of what a network
would look like.
● The teacher will give you a labelled card indicating
what device you will represent.
● Using pieces of string, show how the network
is connected.
○ Example: the person representing the router and switch will hold
a piece of string to show that they are connected.
.
Networking (In-Person)
Digital Option: In a breakout room, complete the Jamboard with your group
Your task:● As a class, create a visual of how a larger
network would look.
● The teacher will give you a labeled index
card indicating what device you represent.
● Using pieces of string, show how each of
you are connected and make up the
network.
Larger Network (In-Person)
Digital option: Use the Jamboard
Your task:● In your student sheets: List at least three things you
learned today.
● At home, create a diagram that reflects your computer
network at home.
