Vaughan PiIikian was born in London to an American mother and Armenian father. After studies in classical languages, fine art and filmmaking at the universities of Oxford, Cambridge and Harvard, he has gone on to produce work in different fields as a scholar, filmmaker, painter, sculptor, de-signer, theatre director and performance artist. He is the author of three collections of poetry, and two volumes of translations from ancient Sanskrit epic. ‘Flight’ is a new feature documentary by Vau-ghan Pilikian. Shot at five locations during the so-called ‘migrant crisis’ of 2015-16, it tackles the dominant theme of our age, but it does so with a fresh and raw approach. Eschewing polemic and hyperbole, the film weaves its music of images to the soaring maqaams of Iraqi saxophonist Amar Alaw, in search of so-mething more intimate and more universal. Forget about the rhetoric and the headlines. Shorn of subtitles, explanations and com-mentary, what you will witness in this film you will recognise for yourself, because it is the most basic dream and desperation com-mon to all humanity: to journey on, to survi-ve adversity.
