John and Meg from Bigvac in central Victoria had been using a VTS tanker they brought from the previous owner of the busi-ness. It had performed well and their plan was to upgrade to a new tanker. High on top of the list was a larger vacuum pump

with a little more grunt and a power rewind hose reel.Having had experience with other vacuum tank builders John

choose VTS to build the new unit.Settling on a 600cfm Fruitland vacuum pump a tipping steel vacuum tank and a locally sourced Isuzu Giga the spec was fi-

nalised.“Extra-wide and lower hose trays and high pressure water were vital in the build for me” Says John Allen the proud owner.

Living not far from VTS it was easy for John and Meg to come and inspect the build as it progressed through the build cycle.“Having input into the build of our new tanker worked well for

us” Meg added “VTS were great to work with, it’s been three months now and the new truck is working a treat. The big pump is a pleasure to work and the extra airflow is a big help. We have had VTS refurb our old tanker so it looks similar to the new one” smiles John.

JohnJohn and Meg currently have their two Acco’s on the market, see them advertised on the back page of this newsletter.

BREAKING NEWS AT VTS16,000lt of payload on an Isuzu FYJ 2000 8x4 VTS

LIVE

6:0001/04/16

Have you ever thought that you could get 16,000lt of payload on a 8x4! Well we have broken through the boundaries and made it happen. We have recently built a 16,000lt aluminium vacuum barrel for a big waste company and with its extremely lightweight and simple design we were able to legally carry 16,000lt of payload. The system is running a 600CFM liquid ring vacuum pump, low profile primary shut off giving an overall height of 3200mm, aluminium mud guards for more weight saving and a unique look and of course the key feature of the truck is

its simplicity.

WWe have a couple of these aluminium barrels in stock in a number of different sizes and ready to fit on your truck, but you better hurry because these won’t last long.

Johnno came to VTS a few years ago. Originally from Darwin, he loves the heat and despises Mansfield’s bitterly cold winters. Funnily enough he chose to live in upper Barwite which one of the coldest regions of

the Mansfield Shire!WheneverWhenever Johnno (and Amanda, his missus) gets the opportunity to go on holidays he usually goes to the hottest part of the world and drinks his body

weight in beer every day!JohnnoJohnno is works in the assembly area at VTS and is responsible for hydraulics, electrics and putting to-gether much of the more complex parts of the build. Being a fitter by trade the quality of Johnno’s work is

very very good.Being a practical joker, he reckons the Wurth rep is fair game so he frequently leaves plastic snakes and spiders strategically located to scare the daylights

out of him (and others)His main hobby when not at VTS is propping up the bar at the local watering hole, getting wood and re-

laxing having a beer while poking the fire.

All though simple valves like everything on a vacuum truck, a little bit of maintenance is re-quired to ensure they do their job. The most common thing to cause product to pass by the valve is the ball not sealing up against the ball seat. This can be caused by a corroding ball seat or an old ball that’s no longer round and needs re-placing. As for the corroding ball seat it is possible to hold the ball up against the seat to check if there are any excessive gaps between the seat and the ball. If there is gaps, the seat can be dressed with an angle grinder. To carry this procedure out, remove the primary shut off lid by releasing the 4

MAINTENANCE

If you’ve owned a vacuum truck for some years you’ll know how the primary and secondary shut offs work to prevent liquid entering your pump. For those that don’t it is a simple valve consisting of a lid, cage and ball. As the liquid rises in the vacuum tank, the ball nestled in the cage starts to float. The lid of the primary shut off has an outlet pipe welded into it we call this the ball seat. When the ball approaches the seat the vacuum sucks the ball up and shuts off the vacuum tank to the pump, preventing any further suction through the inlet pipe of the tank. The secondary shut off works in much the same way but has its own body like a mini vacuum tank,

and its purpose is a backup in case the primary fails. and its purpose is a backup in case the primary fails.

eyebolts on top of the barrel. Ensure that the contents of the vacuum tank has been deemed safe via a gas detector or move lid well away from vacuum tank before using angle grinder. Check that the ball seat is smooth and free of debris, dints and the ball seals with no sunlight

before reassembling. Be sure to put the ball and cage back in before the lid!

Why Do We Use Hydrulic Drive Over Direct Drive? In the last couple of years we have been reducing the amount of direct drive vacuum pumps fitted to our trucks and now have converted entirely too hydraulic drive. The simplest reason being with truck manufacturers now required to comply with strict emission standards, more of the chassis space is required for ad blue tanks, DPD convertors and the like leaving less space for body build-

ers to fit components to the side of chassis. With a direct drive to be long lasting with minimal maintenance, a driveshaft angle of between 2-7 degrees, parallel alignment and ideally 2 dimensional offset is required. With the location of PTOs, rear axle drive shafts and chassis space fitting a vacuum pump off the chassis is near on impossi-ble. Using hydraulics eliminates misaligned drivelines and allows the vacuum pump to be fitted anywhere on the truck. Most of our vacuum trucks use hydraulics for other options such as a rear door, water pump or hoist it makes sense to us to convert to hydraulic drive for vacuum pumps. Hydraulics is becoming more and more popular allowing even the small mechanical and engineer-ing shops to gain experience with the systems, getting good back up and maintenance isn’t an

issue like it has been in the past.

How To Adjust A Vacuum Relief ValveWe frequently get phone calls about vacuum pumps not building up vacuum, the first thing you should check and reset is the vacuum relief valve which will be fitted inline from the tank to the pump.

A). Take off the cover (1) from the adjusting bell (2) by using the point of a screwdriver in the special incision. B). Loosen the set nut (3) by holding the adjusting bell (2) firm. C). Regulate the pressure on the spring by turning the adjusting bell (2). C). Regulate the pressure on the spring by turning the adjusting bell (2). Turn clockwise for in-creased pressure and turn anti-clockwise for decreased pressure. During this operation it is nec-essary to avoid the rotation of the stem, use a screwdriver in the special incision on the stem. D). When set, screw the set nut (3) by holding the adjusting bell (2) firm. The set nut must be screwed down with a torque of 10Nm. Insert the cover (1) with pressure on the adjusting bell (2). E). Tie a piece of wire (4) to the cover (1) and adjusting bell (2) to stop anyone tampering with the set nut (3).

2016APR MAY JUNDR. TANKER

What Pump Should I Buy?We recently received a request from Keef Fumbleigh “Which pump should I use?” A harmless question from a harmless individual… However there are quite a few different applications and these warrant a small amount of investigation prior to the question can be answered! Let’s give

it a go…

Applications of vacuum pumps in liquid waste;

Grease trap - mostly vane and some liquid ring, tank capacities range from 1000lt to 16000lt Septics - similar to aboveGeneral and medium industrial - some vane and more and more liquid ring pumpsGeneral and medium industrial - some vane and more and more liquid ring pumpsHeavy industrial - mostly liquid ring and some blowers

These are by no means set in concrete and sure there are people out there doing just the oppo-site to this. Merely just a loose rule of thumb so to speak.

PROS- Cheap to buy, compared to liquid

ring- Simple to install

- Relatively lightweight- Easy to operate- Easy to maintain- Easy to maintain- Easy to rebuild

- Easy to set up for pressure oper-ation

CONS- Burns oil used as lubricant, can smoke at high vacuum levels

- Can be noisy- Pending on the pump type (air cooled) can only run at full

vacuum intermittently- Not tolerant to any product con-

tamination

PROS- Capable of reaching high airflow- Cool running at high levels of vacuum depending on which brand of blower is used

- Some blowers can attain high - Some blowers can attain high levels of vacuum

- No oil or water is used in the day to day operation

- Relatively simple to install

CONS- Operate at high rpm

- Nois- Noisy, need very good silencing - Can be heavy and bulky due to

silencers - Complex drive required for

larger blowers- Not tolerant to any form of prod-

uct contamination

PROS- Quiet for the life of the pump- Do not use oil in operation

- Constantly capable of maintaining higher levels of vacuum

-- Is tolerant of some product con-tamination

CONS- Heavy due to the need of water as much as 300 litres pending applica-

tion-Complex to fit

- Water used in the operation be-comes a waste product

- Cast iron housing not tolerant of waters high in some mineral content - Need clean water every day of op-

eration, so need- Complex to set up for pressure op-

eration

2016APR MAY JUNREBIRTH PUMPS

THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN!

We have recently come into contact with some old Wallenstein pumps here at VTS HQ. Some of the pumps we received have dated back 15 years! However because they are Wallenstein pumps and are almost bullet proof, all we have had to do is chuck in a rebuild kit and give them

a little TLC and the bloody things are like brand new.

So if you can’t afford a brand new pump, but you are in desperate need of a pump, just give us a call and we can offer you a “almost” new pump for a fraction of the price.

It is time for a service! Don’t forget to be con-stantly checking and maintaining your truck, because at the end of the day it is your pay check and if your truck breaks down because you forgot to check and clean your Primary

Shut Off it will cost you Mega Bucks!

So we suggest that you check our Primary and Secondary Shut off Balls and if they are start-ing to show signs of wear and tear now is your chance to grab a couple of balls at these low

prices.

WHO’S THE RECIPIENT So who should receive our newsletter?

We send out our newsletter every 3 months, it contains a lot of information relevant to liquid waste company owners, operators and mechanics. It is not just about selling stuff. We attempt to spread as much info we gather around as we possibly can. The info we send will save you

much time and money.

WWe have equipment for sale, new and second-hand, the person who needs to see this info is the person buying the equipment. We have vacuum pumps and other stuff we import for sale, it is either the owner in the case of a small business or a maintenance guy who will need to see

this info.

We have some fantastic new valves we would like to inform you about, who should see this?? The operator/s the owner or the mechanics?

WWe have always published technical articles which are of great importance to many users of vacuum tankers, this info needs to be in the hands of maintenance people.

So you can see that maybe this newsletter could go to a number of people. In a very small one truck business, there is really only on bloke who needs this info, but in a larger business there

could be 2, 3 or 20!

IfIf you know someone in your business (other than you) who would be interested in receiving our newsletter, please send us their contact details and we will include them in the email group

or send them our printed copy.

Come and catch up with team VTS at the International Truck, Trailer & Equipment Show this May. The show kicks off on Thursday the 5th of May and closes on Saturday the 7th.
