VSS Creative Virtual Photography Club is
growing at a healthy pace getting top
photographers as well as keen beginners with
loads of talent on board. The young guns are
showing their worth in heaps and bounds.
To the traditional six categories: Avant Garde,
Creative Portraiture, Creative Pictorial,
Creative Nature, Creative Monochrome and
Photojournalism two more were added:
Creative Scapes and Fine Art.
A maximum of eight entries per photographer
are considered monthly with a max of two
TOP 10's per category.
The goal, to have the TOP 10 winners
published in an annual glossy ‘coffee-table’
book, was realised last year. TOP VSS
Creative TOP 10 Photographers 2018 made
this dream a reality.
VSS Creative TOP 10 Photographers 2019
represents some of the best creative
photography of 2019 in SA. TOP 10 2019 has
taken the benchmark one notch higher, which
almost seemed impossible when glancing
through TOP 10 2018 book.
The photos featured are more than 800
winning images from January to December
2019, from 160 photographers a 30%
increase of photographers reaching the TOP
10. Total entries for 2019 was more than
10,000 and around 500 photographers
competing.
TOP 10 winners are featured alphabetically with a
small bio of each photographer together with his /
her winning images of 2019. TOP 10 1st, 2nd and
3rd winners of month images are displayed larger
than others.
The last chapter, From our Judges features work
of the adjudicators, who for obvious reasons
could not enter the competition.
The first TOP 10 publication was almost a
Who’s Who of Photography - this, the 2nd publication, is an almost
definitive Who’s Who in Modern SA Photography.
Martin Dudley stated that, this publication printed
annually will be a historic reference of our work
and a history of photography in SA, 10 years from
now. The printed photo will always supercede
electronic versions flying around on the net.
I would like to thank and congratulate all
participating photographers, they inspired us and
collectively made VSS Virtual Club the towering
platform for most of the top SA photographers it is
today. And lastly my family and judges who spent hours
adjudicating and discussing top photos in order to
award winners - with the quality of work entered
this is a daunting task.
What strikes us, as judges, is the
diversity of work.

Lezzet Abbott She’s divine
Based in Johannesburg, South Africa, Lezzet has had no formal photographic training, beginning her adventure in 2012 with a bridge camera, showcasing her natural ability to imaginatively recognise how the magic, harmony and balance of a photograph works. Her acute eye for the 'little things' brings the everyday overlooked wonders around us to the fore in her
unique style that captures the soul and imagination of the viewer
She is inspired by the things that the average rushed individual does not see, urging the onlooker to slow down and notice the majesty of the inexplicable beauty we are cloaked in. Having sold several of her works through clients and photographic exhibitions, her impassioned flair for artistic creation within her love for the craft is a rich indication of her ability to turn the ordinary into the extraordinary.

Louis Pretorius
I'm a South African Photographer / Artist based in Pretoria. It wasn't in till 2005 that I really got in to photography after a friend invited me to photography club event. After a few events I was hooked and joined the club which formed the foundation of my photographic experience. Since then I have been in a few clubs. What started as a hobby grew into a passion of mine. It made perfect sense for me to use my photographs together with my artistic side to create some Altered Reality work. In 2007 I received my first PSSA Silver Medal at the 2nd Port Elizabeth National-Salon for the best photo in the Altered Reality category. Another category I also enjoy and specialise in is macro photography. I prefer to take photographs using natural light as it brings out the best mood and colours in my work.
I love sharing my work and experience with friends, family, club members, and fellow photographers. My favorite quote is -“The question is not what you look at, but what
you see.”

Lourens Botha
“Dark and sometimes haunting” are possibly the best words to describe the work of Lou Botha. The inspiration for much of his work comes from the life stories of the people in front of his camera – their personalities, fears, afflictions and fantasies find their way into images with always a deeper perspective to it. Multi-layered approaches with often two or more stories overlapping and intertwining, force the viewers to spend time to see “through” his works. Many of the works are not popular to the average viewer for that reason - they also confront the viewer often with the viewer's own emotions getting transferred into the image - making it often a very

close and personal experience. Lou comes from a long lineage of very creative people in many different arts and crafts, including a heritage for DIY projects – this results in a keen interest in finding new innovative ways of producing light and various effects and off-beat approaches to lighting his subjects. This ever-expanding DIY toolbox, along with a sense for the dramatic, makes it difficult even for himself to predict what is going to be next. It is the journey that matters far more than the destination.

Lucy Gemmill
Lucy moved from the Uk via Zimbabwe, a small 8 year detour, to South Africa in 2005. With a C.V. ranging from Recruitment in London to 20 years as a Commercial Pilot.
Lucy came across the “rabbit hole” of photography 3 years ago. She is an Information gatherer by nature. The constant daily learning of several chosen photographic genres, intermingled with art and many mistakes made with an ever growing hunger and gradual understanding of “seeing”, is enabling the start of her creative story.

I am a 2nd year student at VSS Creative Photo and Design College, in Pretoria. Being an aspiring Photographer I love capturing moments which speaks a million words. At age 14, I won a prize for a photograph which I took for fun, it was then when I realized I had a passion for photography.I look up to my lecturer, Hein Waschefort, and I Idolize him because his hard work and passion paid off when he got nominated as the best Africa Photographer for the year 2019.I hope to someday follow in his footsteps.
Photography to me, is a language, which I enjoy speaking. I hope to make my passion a career once I finish my studies.
Joining up with VSS Creative Club has opened a whole new world to me in photography. At club level, I was inspired by the works of Lynne Kruger-Haye and David Barnes and I yearned to do creations like them. Joining the VSS club, I got further inspired by Hein Waschefort, Charlaine Gerber, Barbara Dannhauser and Martin Dudley and many others. Martin was the one that put the right tools in my hand, after attending one of his workshops, to start my creative journey and for that I am extremely thankful. The past few months had been a very steep learning curve for me, but I am thankful for the gift that I received from our creator to see things differently and now to be able to create what I see in my mind. I have by no means completed my journey, I will keep on learning and creating.

I have been an active member of the photographic community for approximately past 10 years. On family trips to the Kruger I started with wildlife photography and progressed over the years to portraiture, photo journalism and a little bit of landscapes. I try to be as versatile and have in the past experimented with different geanres of photography. I have developed over the years a love for Monochrome as it gives so much depth and texture to a photograph. My photography has evolved frame by frame to a never ending world of opportunities. I am passionate about photography and enjoy spending most of my free time behind the camera. Photography is my “never-a-dull-moment” stress relieving, adrenalin rush
with limited boundaries.

Photography has always been a part of who I am, it defines me and gives me purpose. Initially I did it only for the love of capturing moments in nature and as an extension to my art and landscape designs back ground. In 2011, with the motivation of family and friends, I decided to broaden my photography horizons and signed up for various courses with the aim of improving my technical skills.
For me, there is nothing more rewarding than capturing moments for people that
they can treasure for years to come.
On the creative shoots, this is now a way to live out my art and passion.

God gave me the talent to see the beauty in everything. I am a passionate photographer. My camera is always with me. As photographer, its our job to make people look good. I specialize in seeing the subtitles of every moment and the candid connections between people. Photographs are memories so I try to do the best I can. I belong to PSSA and I am taking part in salons and competitions. Everyday I learn something new.

I grew up in Pretoria and even though I am left brain dominant I found my right brain kicked in from time to time as I loved to draw, write short stories and paint. At 24 I developed a fascination for Photography and bought my first Canon DSLR camera with money I got from the sale of my car which my father had bought me in Matric. The camera was my way of
remembering him as he always had a camera in his
hand.My photography until 2018 basically consisted of everyday moments and small happenings in my life. Last year my photography moved to a new level when my husband Coenraad enrolled me in Robbie's mentorship programme. My two great passions in life are travel and photography. Through photography I seek to capture scenes and events as I see them, and to share with others the beauty and diversity of the world around me.

Marleen la Grange
Attending Hein Waschefort's workshops in Hogsback, Port Elizabeth and Nieu Bethesda opened awhole new world of photography. What an experience to keep me in a dreamworld. Although still in baby shoes the possibility to create was inspired. Not being able to get around a lot this year creativityfilled my moments to explore within. The incredible creations by the artists on the VSS Creative Page arephenomenal and opened the door, after 5yrs, into the direction I would like to go. I also found thatit is a steep learning curve without any art background.

As far back as I can remember I always had this thing about photography and capturing images.
It all must have started at about 9 when I got my first basic film camera for Christmas.I want to capture my images differently, to try creating art with my camera. I found that, not only do you need to capture the correct images well... but also understanding your editing techniques is of utmost importance for me to express what I do.I try to look at the world differently and try capture it that way and then create an art form out of my imagination and the image itselfI love all aspects of photography but especially Creative Composites and Black and White. I have had no artistic training at all , the last time I was in 'Art Class' was in high school, I can't draw nor paint, No photographic training, and haven't had one lesson in
Photoshop. Everything I know has been self-taught through books and the internet. Today I give creative lessons and talks on photography, I teach creative and in-depth photoshop editing to groups, one on one lessons and on Skype to photographers across South Africa and even some photographers in Europe and as far as Dubai. How did this all happen… See…. we all been given and blessed with an amazing gift called creativity by our Creator, We just need to tap into it to reveal our own unique style and as we push on year after year we learn more about ourselves and we inspire...God Bless

Michelle van Niekerk
My interest in photography started 4 years ago. a Client at the salon one day told me about her wildlife trips and her beautiful photos. She said that she would come show me some of her photos. The next time she came and showed me I couldn't believe what a camera could do! The next week I was off to the local camera club. I saved and bought myself a beginners camera. I couldn't focus on anything but playing outside and learning about my camera. Uncle Piet from our was willing to help me to learn what its all about. I still visit uncle Piet almost every Wednesday. He taught me so much, I also played and learned some tricks. I have still so much to learn. Everywhere I go I see pictures and beautiful things. I cant always go to all the beautiful places but I try to make the best with what I have. I will make use of my talents and enjoy what I do for ever. I wish to learn something new everyday.
This is only the beginning !!

Melanie Cornelius
Melanie CorneliusTranquil moments
Professional photographer, who perceives the world in a whole different manner and finds beauty in places where others see nothing. She has always been highly creative from a young age and pursued a successful corporate career, before following her dreams and becoming a full-time photographer.
Melanie is known for her inspiration in the community, by helping others grow and her creative in-camera techniques which she has mastered and tutors in on a regular basis.
Her favourite genre is monochrome, and she loves creating an image instead of just taking one and uses altered reality to create pieces of art in post-processing. She has found a perfect balance between corporate photography and her fine art photography.
Art to Melanie is the process between creating an image and
gripping the attention of the viewer.

What is it about certain photographs that will make us stop and stare for a while?
A promise that some things will never be forgotten. A timeless piece of art that moves you inside. The stories they tell, the moments they capture which in a blink of an eye could be lost forever. Is it their resolute sense of identity, each one unique? Maybe it's about the colour they hold, or don't hold. The shadows that mysteriously draws us in. The way light falls. Or maybe it's the sense of freedom caught within a frame. A frame of mind. A frame that holds a picture. A voice on its own. A voice everyone hears in a different language. One photograph, many interpretations. One canvas, a million ways to paint it. So, now it's time for me to paint my story the way I see it on the endless roads it leads me on. The question is not whether you understand what you are visually experiencing, the question is…
HOW DOES IT MAKE YOU FEEL!

I am a photo enthusiast/amateur photographer with a keen interest in wildlife, nature and bird photography. Recently I have been experimenting with more creative in camera techniques as well as exploring the endless possibilities of Photoshop. I am basically self-taught although I have attended a few short courses. I have enjoyed mastering the art of photography over the years...
now that the rules are firmly entrenched in my head,
I am ready to break them and embark on a more creative style of photography.
Exciting times ahead.

Natasha Bird
I have always been in a creative space from early childhood and attribute this to my wonderful mother who positively encouraged my doodles and love of the arts. I have worn many “hats” comfortably over my working career. Event planning and interior design are two such fields that I have thoroughly enjoyed but it is through my picture framing business of 30 years that I came into contact with many talented photographers and artists and always hoped that one day I would be in a position to pursue photography more seriously. That day arrived in 2016 when I registered for a photography course and a few months later I joined Edenvale Photography Club and have never looked back. I am mentored by Robbie Aspeling and have learnt an inordinate amount from his tuition. A year ago, I added Boksburg Photography Club to my learning journey and VSS Creative too as I am wanting to explore the more creative aspects of photography and not merely capture a technically sound photograph. My interests are mainly birds, wildlife and portraiture with composites being my current area of interest. She danced when no-one was home (below) is my first composite attempt.I am most humbled to be included in this publication and thank Hein and the Waschefort family for your dedication and commitment to this platform
as well as every photographer that contributes and continues to be a wonderful source of both
inspiration and encouragement for me.

I started my career in photography in the days of film, in the early 70's I had my own darkroom black and white darkroom. In 2010 I rekindled my passion by visiting the local Game Reserve and found a love for wildlife photography.I have a passion for all photography which I portray through my images, as Ansel Adams quoted “You don't take a photograph, you make it”.I am well versed in most genres and now that I am retired this allows me time to follow my dream and fulfill that passion. My images have graced national and local editorials, they featured on the front page of Zululand Observer and The Bay Watch. In January 2019 I was honoured to have my photo on the cover of the Canon, Click Magazine, as well as being their featured wildlife photographer and in addition featuring in their 100th edition.I was honoured to have an image selected by the PSSA which was exhibited with top Chinese photographers, hosted in Cape Town and Johannesburg.I am an avid member of Beachcombers photography Club where I have won the title of Senior Photographer of the year for 4 consecutive years, 2016 to 2019.
