► when pictures and text are clear and simple.► when the warnings are combined with something that makes smokers feel more confident about quitting.

How can warning messages help smokers quit?

► by helping them understand how serious the diseases caused by smoking are and how likely they are to get them.► by linking the warning with their own experience so that the message is more believable and accepted.► by motivating them to take steps to protect their health.

Nov 228:35 AM

When do smokers notice warnings and think about the information?► when the warning is at the top and front of the package.►when warnings are specific and clear with an expanded explanation (NOT general, like “smoking is harmful”).► when warnings evoke an emotional response.► when warnings are vivid.► when warnings are changed regularly (and particularly when they stop being noticed).► when there are several different warning messages in use.

Philippines' cigarette warnings On May 24, 2010, the Philippines Department of Health announced the drafting of requirements for graphic health warning on tobacco packaging that included graphic health warnings. The warnings must occupy 30% of the topfront of the package and 60% of the topback of the package.

The order requires eight warnings in rotation for a period of 24 months, and provides for the Department of Health to issue new warnings every 2 years.

The warnings were to be in place 90 days after the publication of the order (i.e. by end of August, 2010).

Nov 228:50 AM

However.....WASHINGTON  A judge on Monday blocked a federal requirement that would have begun forcing tobacco companies next year to put graphic images including dead and diseased smokers on their cigarette packages.U.S. District Judge Richard Leon ruled that it's likely the cigarette makers will succeed in a lawsuit to block the new standard. He stopped the requirement until after the lawsuit is resolved, which could take years.

Nov 179:47 PM

Tobacco use is a major preventable cause of premature death and disease worldwide. Currently, approximately 5.4 million people die each year due to tobaccorelated illnesses—a figure expected to increase to more than 8 million a year by 2030.

Why would tobacco companies and lobbyist keep delaying the FDA from changing the warning labels?
