Two Great Surprises on

Kids enjoying Loy Kratong at Bistro 33

Bistro 33…Great Food, Great Service and More

You might not tend to think of Sukhumvit Soi 33 as a place to take your family. But if you do a little exploring near the end of the soi

you will discover Bistro 33 and Tenderloins Sports Bar & Steak House, two delightful eateries. Barry Osborne manages the former, and helps the delightful Khun Aor manage the latter. You are probably familiar with Barry; he spent 16 years with the British Club. Barry actually ended up in Thailand by happenstance; he was working at a hospital in Saudi Arabia when he came to Thailand for a vacation. While here, he saw an advertisement the British Club had posted in The Bangkok Post for a head chef and applied for it. He got the job, and as time went on became the F & B Manager before becoming the Operations Manager and then General Manager. He left the British Club in 2008 to become Group Director for Kimberly Holdings Corporation Limited. The head honcho is Canadian Barry Shea, so to keep it simple Barry goes with the moniker, Baz. Kimberly runs Bistro 33 and Tenderloins Sports Bar & Steak House. Both establish-ments are well-known to TCCC members as many Chamber functions and events have been held at both locations. Kimberly also distributes wine (a minimum of six bottles per delivery) and imports and distributes Shustov and Jewel of Russia vodkas. And it does outside catering for functions and events for up to 200 people. It has even arranged and catered a New Year’s cruise for regular patrons and a coach with police escort to see Eric Clapton at Muang Thong Thani. And it also holds monthly wine tastings too. So you can see its restaurants are more than just your average F & B outlets. Tenderloins is a contemporary up-market sports bar and steak house serving tasty imported steaks and a wide choice of excellent wines. It shows sports live from around the world on seven big screens. It’s a perfect place to chill out, shoot some pool & relax.

Tenderloins’ original owner was Australian, so there’s still a strong Aussie following and Aussie sports presence on the many TVs around the bar. The websites can tell you which sports programs are showing. Popular food includes Argentinean steaks, ribs, and the “Works” burger. There’s also an open kitchen, so you can see all your meals being prepared in front of your eyes. There’s “Set Lunches” for Bt250 and favourites like “all day breakfasts” so you won’t want for selection. Happy Hour at Tenderloins goes every day from 4-7pm for Bt100 and libations include draught beer, whiskies, cocktails and house wine by glass. Tuesday night is “Ladies Night” with free drinks from 7-9pm for all females in attendance. Describing Bistro 33, Barry says, “It’s a meeting place, it is ideal venue for functions, events, parties, networking nights and children’s birthday parties. It’s really an oasis in the middle of Sukhumvit.” Barry designs special menus for these functions e.g. he arranged for Pimms and canapés, mimosas, a birthday cake and cupcakes for one party, so it’s safe to say he goes that extra distance for his customers. Bistro 33, which has a stunning large garden, has a brick-built pizza oven and is known for its salads and fresh-baked pasta. It has a Sunday Brunch (Bt1,000 with alcohol, Bt500 without, kids under 12 free) from 11am-3pm with children’s activities, such as face painting and crafts, from 1-4pm. Lee Shamrock, the one-man band, performs regularly in the garden at these brunches. Bistro 33 can serve up to 30 people a la carte in its special dining room. Both Tenderloins and Bistro 33 are great venues for families, couples, friends & celebrations. Tenderloins is open from 10am-1am; Bistro 33 from 10am-midnite. You can check out the menus of both restaurants at the restaurants’ websites.

Delegates with H.E. Cham Prasidh, Senior Minister and Minister of Commerce

Opening New Doors in Cambodia

February 14-15, 2011 saw Ambassa-dor Ron Hoffmann and the Canadian Embassy’s Commercial Section lead a trade & investment mission to

Phnom Penh that opens a new era in Cana-dian commercial engagement with Thailand’s eastern neighbour. The mission added a new dimension to comprehensive Canada-Cambodia partnerships in political relations, development assistance and security. It was only in the summer of 2009 that the Canadian Embassy in Bangkok assumed responsibility for Cambodia, a market which at the time received little in the way of inter-est from Canadian firms. It was nevertheless clear that potential existed given the devel-oping nation’s impressive decade of GDP growth that peaked clear of 13% and on more than one occasion exceeded growth in China. Cambodia is also home to a young population with half of its nearly 15 million citi-zens under the age of 25, as well as a wealth of untouched, in many cases unexplored, natural resources. The Canadian delegation represented a breadth of interest and included a diverse collection of 18 Asia-experienced compa-nies with strong records of corporate social

responsibility and expertise in aerospace, financial and engineering services, ICT and the extractive sector. Company representa-tives did well to demonstrate the international flavour of Canadian business as they arrived in Phnom Penh from offices in 10 different countries including Indonesia, the United Arab Emirates and China. Many were mak-ing their initial exploratory commercial visit to Phnom Penh while others joined to seek out new opportunities, further develop their net-works and also gain a better understanding of Cambodian government economic priorities. Export Development Canada was a mis-sion sponsor and Peter Nesbitt, Regional Vice-President for International Business De-velopment in Asia, was among those making an initial working trip to Cambodia. Nesbitt saw the mission as one that provided a “…well planned and comprehensive overview of the opportunities and risks for Canadian firms wishing to look at this market” and believes “there are definitely some good companies to do business with.” He cautions, however, that he believes the trick in Cambodia is to find the right partner and to do your homework first. A recent history of conflict and turmoil,

and a reputation for a high level of corruption, paint an image that is challenged by the en-ergy of the many entrepreneurial Khmer and foreign businesses working to turn the page in Cambodia. Rudi Carolsfeld, Vice Presi-dent, Asia Pacific Region, for RuggedCom observed that “the trade mission to Phnom Penh showed us that Cambodia has much more to offer Canadian businesses than one might expect based on the news we hear in the west, and I am convinced that through the excellent contacts we made there - and that we would probably never make on our own - we have identified opportunities for growth that will benefit both Canada and Cambodia." The success noted by Carolsfeld is indicative of the many projects now being pursued by delegates in the immediate wake of the mission that was supported greatly by excellent partners in the Royal Government of Cambodia, including host H.E. Cham Prasidh, Senior Minister and Minister of Com-merce, and H.E. Dr. Sok An, Deputy Prime Minister. Cambodia’s private sector also offered an enthusiastic reception and sig-nificant networking opportunities through the International Business Chamber of Cambodia and the Cambodian Young Entrepreneurs’ Association, as well as DFDL Mekong, Legal and Tax Advisors. The Canadian Embassy in Bangkok, while continuing to support commercial interest in Thailand and Cambodia, will next turn its at-tention to introducing Canadian companies to Laos with a trade & investment mission planned for the fall of 2011. Interested Canadian companies are invited to contact Tony Finch, Second Secretary (Commercial) at [email protected].
