INTELLIGENT STORAGE SOFTWARE

A Conversation with Paul Sallaberry, Executive Vice President, Field Operations, VERITAS Software — Part 1 of 2

The Ability to Execute, the Power to ChangeWhat Intelligent Storage Software Means for Your Business

market trends to develop betterproducts and services. The solutionsnecessary to manage this new age ofdigital information go beyond theconventions of storage management, which are tactically focused onsimply “parking” and protectingdata.

VOX: And if you can summarizeVERITAS’ contribution, what would itbe?

PAS: In the digital marketplace, dataachieves its maximum strategic valueand impact when in motion —allowing it to be rapidly accessed, shared, replicated and manipulatedin critical applications at every levelof a business enterprise. VERITAS’Intelligent Storage Software keepsdata in motion by enabling reliable, unfettered delivery across diversecomputing environments, from thedesktop to the data center. Broaderand more strategic than storage

management, VERITAS’ solutionsempower users to fully leverage datastorage, applications and theInternet.

VOX: How do you see the changesin the business climate affectingcompanies?

PAS: Less than 18 months ago wewere all caught up in the Internet“frenzy.” The push was on to launchnew e-businesses. Every organizationwas in a race to leverage the Web.The opportunities seemed limitless —extend marketing capabilities, keepcustomers on sites for extendedperiods of time, turn site visitors intorevenue generators — acquire apredictable share of the customer’sannual spending and deal directlywith the customer. Maximizing thereturn on IT spending was not apriority. The Net was paved with gold— getting there first was all thatmattered.

Enter the economic downturn, andwith it, the transition from revolutionto evolution of systemsinfrastructure. Companies arebacking off the e-commerce pushand putting more emphasis onefficiencies — investing intechnologies to help reach customers, deliver better customer service andleverage their underused ITinfrastructure. They find new ways toservice the customer. They streamlineprocesses so they can respond tocustomers fast. They are looking tocontrol their inventories — build todemand, not to capacity. And, if theydon’t know how to do something

Today, even thesmallestgain inefficiency and abilityto deliver higherquality of service tothe internal andexternal customer —matters.”

VERITAS is the world leader inIntelligent Storage Software, delivering heterogeneous

interoperability — across servers, storage devices and storagenetworks. VERITAS simplifies storagecomplexity, facilitates competitivereadiness and enables organizationsto efficiently and effectively leveragedata to attract and retain customersand respond competitively tobusiness opportunity. If you’re inbusiness today, your opportunities, risks and challenges are very differentfrom what they were just a few yearsago. Paul Sallaberry explains how theInternet has changed the ways wedo business today and explains whatIntelligent Storage Software fromVERITAS is all about and what it cando for you.

VOX: Paul, how has businesschanged with the Internet?

PAS: The arrival of the Internet hasforever altered the role of data inbusiness. The “connected”marketplace creates limitless reachand opportunities — presenting thepossibility of cultivating targetmarkets by fostering highlypersonalized one-to-one customerrelationships. This introducesunprecedented competitive pressuresand customer demand for realtimeresponse.

In this environment, data is clearly acompany’s greatest asset and mustbe intelligently leveraged to ensuresurvival … track and pursue newmarkets … anticipate and meetindividual customer needs … identify

well, they outsource it to aconsultant partner who does.

VOX: Does that mean businesspriorities have changed?

PAS: Our customers tell us that thepriority has shifted from investing intechnologies that drive growth toinvesting in technologies that lowercosts. But two things have remainedconstant: the ever-growing demandfor data and the correspondingpressure on the IT infrastructure tokeep pace.

In the wake of the Net “boom,” ITinfrastructures have entered a newrace — the race for efficiency. Focusis on mapping business applicationneed and criticality of data to the ITinfrastructure investment. Efficienciesare sought across the board — it’s allabout using IT resources moreproductively. Companies must domore with less and free scarcehuman assets from mundane tasks toenable more focus on the applicationenvironment and its user community.

We’ve left an era in which ITinvestments were prioritized basedon “big bang” potential and whereincremental improvements wereviewed as a waste of time. Today, even the smallest gain in efficiencyand ability to deliver higher quality ofservice to the internal and externalcustomer matters.

VOX: What role does technologicalinnovation play in thesedevelopments?

PAS: Innovations that open accessto information, and the speed atwhich it can be acquired, perpetuatea never-ending pile-up in the sheeramount of data in the enterprise.Innovation has also changed the way

V O X V E R I T A S 4 . 36

opportunity mandates that simplicityin the ability to adapt — absent ofrisk — be intrinsic to the ITinfrastructure.

The user experience must beunencumbered. Consistency in theability to access informationautomatically and transparently —regardless of location or time and atthe highest performance — hasimmediate impact on internalcustomer productivity and externalcustomer satisfaction and retention.

Simplified management in the faceof expanding complexity can beachieved only if interoperability isbuilt in across the application, operating system, storage device andnetwork. Flexibility to install, changeor expand capacity and capabilitywith uninterrupted service is the newmandate to cope with increasingdemands on data. To be effective, the infrastructure must be a utility, not a constraint. Traditional ITmetrics such as capacity, performance and scalability havetaken on new meaning, andindependence — complete freedomof choice in the selection anddeployment of the physical IT asset— is the new metric by whicheffective management of the storageinfrastructure will be measured.

The solution? An IT architecture builton the capability of software, nothardware.

VOX: This infrastructure is whatVERITAS brings to businesses andtheir IT environments?

PAS: Yes. With that, VERITAS givesyou the ability to execute. The powerto change. What does that mean?VERITAS’ portfolio of IntelligentStorage Software solutions is built on

in which we do business and pursuerecreation. ERP systems, CRMapplications, the need for “instant”business intelligence, online videoand music — these are just a fewexamples. IT is the center ofinnovation, and innovation iscreating a significant expansion indata volumes and need forcontinuous efficiency improvements.

In addition, tasks once viewed asdependent on human interventionare now being automated. Withautomation comes the expectation ofexpanded access to IT resources andenhanced levels of service in terms ofboth response time and quality.

VOX: What should be the role of ITdepartments in accommodatingthese changes?

PAS: The true leverage of IT isfound in the environment’s ability torespond quickly to opportunity, whatever its form — technology,time-to-market, competitive oreconomic. Maximizing the return on

Independence —complete freedom ofchoice in the selectionand deployment of thephysical IT asset — isthe new metric bywhich effectivemanagement of thestorage infrastructurewill be measured.

an architecture facilitatingunmatched interoperability amongthe application, operating system, storage device, and the network.VERITAS’ Virtual Storage Foundationis the only heterogeneousarchitecture specifically designed tomaximize data access and protection, while simplifying storage complexity— delivering the digital freedomcritical to competitive response andcompany success.

VOX: And how does this allow youto realize the return on opportunity?

VERITAS’ Intelligent Storage Softwaresolutions empower users to designan availability strategy that meets therequirements of the customer andmarket opportunity. They allow youto invest in that level of availabilitythat is best positioned that deliversthe greatest return on opportunity. These powerful software productscover a broad range of data accessand protection, from desktop to datacenter, across all major serverplatforms, operating systems, networks and storage systems. Eachcomplements the other, and extendsthe reach and capabilities of the dataavailability environment.

VOX: How does high availabilityfigure into this?

PAS: The intensity of e-business hasestablished the expectation of systemavailability 24/forever. Today, downtime is measured in minutesand seconds — not hours or days. There’s no time for backup windows. There is little time for scheduledmaintenance, and no time forunscheduled maintenance.Corruption of data cannot betolerated. That’s why VERITAS’ highavailability solutions ensurecontinuous availability for mission-critical applications. Our market-leading multi-platform solution forhigh availability ensures quick recoveryof applications and data, thescalability to meet performancerequirements, and unifiedmanagement of clusters of databaseservers.

VOX: What else does the portfolioinclude?

PAS: VERITAS’ data protectionsolutions provide backup andrecovery, scalable from the desktopto the data center. They protect theintegrity of corporate data across allplatforms and all databases.

VERITAS’ innovative SAN solutionsoptimize networks dedicated forstorage. They manage storagecapacity requirements effectively, andmaximize application and storageinfrastructure performance. At thesame time, they realize the accessefficiencies of consolidated data.

The VERITAS Intelligent StorageSoftware portfolio also includescertified solutions experts in VERITASConsulting. They can design andimplement a comprehensive disasterrecovery plan to reduce your reliance

Whatever thedemands on data,VERITAS’ IntelligentStorage Softwareensures the availabilityessential to successfulexecution in responseto market andtechnology change.

on key individuals, automatecomplex and periodic tasks, andminimize decision making during therecovery process.

VOX: So, we’ve really gone farbeyond efficiency increases tochange management and on tocontinued business competitivenessand agility, no matter what platformyou use.

PAS: Right. VERITAS’ IntelligentStorage Software supports all opensystems servers across distributednetworks. It optimizes server storagefor all applications and ensuresreliable data access and protection.Management costs go down, because the complexity of theinfrastructure is hidden from theuser. You can perform storage-related tasks online withoutapplication disruption, removingtypical storage limitations. As datavolumes expand, and utilization ratesof existing resources increase, youcan quickly provision new storage forunlimited scalability.

Whatever the demands on data,VERITAS’ Intelligent Storage Softwareensures the availability essential tosuccessful execution in response tomarket and technology change.

The conversation with Paul Sallaberrywill continue in the next issue ofVOX VERITAS.

SUCCESS STORY

V O X V E R I T A S 4 . 38

From a data center of more than 6,300 square meters,Lufthansa Systems Infratec GmbH provides completeIT services for Lufthansa, the German airline, and

other airlines all over the world, in addition to travel andlogistics companies and service organizations in otherindustries. Data security and uninterrupted 24-hour serviceare essential requirements. The company meets them withhigh availability technology, redundant service delivery andspecial safe data storage facilities with maximal protectionagainst any interruptions. Data protection via backup playsan enormous role in this.

Even a highly available environment does not completelyprotect against data loss — a main reason for lost orcorrupted data is, for example, human error. To limit theconsequences of such data loss events, a business must beable to restore data as completely and quickly as possible.Lufthansa Systems Infratec has to meet extremelystringent service requirements in this regard, because it isnot just the computing center for one of the world’slargest airlines, but also offers IT services to many otherclients who greatly value data security and highavailability. Responsibility for data protection at LufthansaSystems Infratec extends not just to its own, but also tothe customers’ critical data. At the same time, the serviceprovider needs to operate efficiently to maintain itscompetitive edge. This means using resources optimallyand keeping administrative overhead low.

Rigorous requirements for backups andrestores

The IT infrastructure of a services provider such asLufthansa Systems Infratec needs to be able to respond toall customer requirements. This makes the computingenvironment very complex, which takes us to one of themain criteria for choosing data storage managementapplications, including backup and restore: the ITdepartment has to support heterogeneous platforms andapplications for steadily growing data volumes, without

needing an equivalent increase in administrative resources.Backup technology at Lufthansa Systems Infratec has tosatisfy the following requirements:

• Automation of backups and restores

• Support for a heterogeneous environment

• Support for all current applications

• High reliability

• High performance including very fast restores

• Centralized administration

• Effective protection of at least 10 terabytes of dataevery day

• Scalability

A new data protection infrastructure withVERITAS NetBackup™

After evaluating the popular backup products, LufthansaSystems Infratec settled on VERITAS NetBackup™, theenterprise backup software. A large amount of the data, protected by project manager Henno Rathmann and histeam in the client/server computing area, is produced bySAP systems and other Oracle-based applications runningunder Sun Solaris, IBM AIX and HP-UX. VERITASNetBackup can accommodate this heterogeneity. It hasoptional extensions for SAP and Oracle databases, andadditional agents and options for many other applications. It would have no problem supporting new databases andapplications if that became necessary.

With its multitiered master/slave architecture, NetBackup isoptimal for open systems with high data volumes.Altogether, Lufthansa Systems Infratec deploys eightdifferent environments, each one with its own masterserver, which controls the planning and execution of allbackup jobs. All databases are backed up online every day.Simultaneously with the backups, the system stores anarchive log on separate media, with copies made bothbefore and after the online backup. In case the file systemhousing these offline redo logs fills up to a predetermined

OverViewhigh-water mark either during abackup or in between backups, itautomatically launches an additionalbackup. This prevents a potentialcrash of database operations with asubsequent freeze. As backuphardware, Lufthansa Systems Infratecuses three StorageTek tape silos andseveral smaller tape libraries.

Performance, integration,reliability

High performance during backupand fast, complete restores areextremely important to LufthansaSystems Infratec. VERITAS NetBackupaccomplishes this throughmultiplexing, transferring datastreams from up to 32 differentsources to tape at the same time. This allows the hardware to reachmaximal data throughput. Supportfor Oracle and SAP is alsostreamlined to satisfy the need forhigh availability and maximalperformance of these applications. For this purpose, NetBackup wasclosely integrated with online SAPbackup utilities.

Reliable backup is a basic componentof doing business at LufthansaSystems Infratec. However, in case ofan actual loss of data or an entireserver, rapid full restore and recoveryare most important. VERITASNetBackup has a range of capabilitiesto support this. For example, it canproduce complete or partial restoresfrom a primary backup, and evenrestore separate applications orcomplete servers. It can automaticallygenerate copies of primary backupsfor offsite storage in a data vault, another data center or anotherbuilding. This improves dataprotection in case of events such asfires or floods. NetBackup can“demultiplex” tapes so that it canwrite data on them contiguously.

Lufthansa SystemsInfratec GmbH

The CustomerLufthansa Systems Infratec GmbH,founded on January 1, 2001, is theresult of a restructuring of Lufthansa’score information technology business. As a leading e-business systemsintegrator with approximately 1,000employees, Lufthansa Systems Infratecdevelops customized IT infrastructuresolutions worldwide in all industries.Lufthansa Systems Infratec offers acomplete range of IT services includingmodular operations, application servicesand outsourcing. Its main competence isin the integration of e-business andwireless mobile applications. LufthansaSystems Infratec runs one of the mostadvanced and capable data centers inEurope and has extensive experience inthe areas of network andcommunications, server and middlewaretechnology, and desktop support.

Business Requirements• Protection for a daily data volume of

10 terabytes

• Support for all common UNIXderivatives, Windows NT clients,Oracle and SAP databases

• Simple administration

• Fast backups and restores

The SolutionVERITAS NetBackup™ meets all ofLufthansa Systems Infratec’srequirements with its multitieredarchitecture, vast compatibility andpowerful capabilities for rapid databackup and restore. Lufthansa SystemsInfratec uses VERITAS Global DataManager™ for increasingly centralizedand automated, low-overheadmanagement of backup operations.

This function allows saving andrestoring of the informationhierarchically, according to itsrelevance. It also makes sure that themost important data is restored firstand any impact to businessproductivity kept at the absoluteminimum.

Centralized, automatedadministration and a movetowards fibre channel

Another consideration in favor ofchoosing VERITAS NetBackup for theexperts at Lufthansa Systems Infratecwas its simple administration. Themore data protection can beautomated and centralized, the lessintervention by system administratorsis necessary. However, backup jobsmust have the flexibility to adjust tothe individual needs of eachapplication. Given a backup volumeof approximately 10 terabytes perday, this is no small order. LufthansaSystems Infratec solved this problemwith VERITAS Global Data Manager™.A single administrator can nowmanage a multitude of NetBackupstorage domains from a centralconsole without any limitations ofNetBackup master server functions.System managers can implement thesame data storage managementstrategy consistently throughout theirdata center and can add new storagedomains without incurring additionaloverhead.

To consolidate all enterprise datastorage, accelerate operations andcentralize data management evenmore, Lufthansa Systems Infratec isnow changing over to fibre channeltechnology. This restructuring is noproblem for the backup software.NetBackup is fully SCSI- and fibrechannel-compatible, and was one ofthe first data protection solutions tosupport storage area networks.

INITIATIVES

V O X V E R I T A S 4 . 310

In 2000, VERITAS and IBMconcluded a joint developmentand marketing agreement. The

agreement calls for close cooperationin many areas of productdevelopment. This includes VERITAS’bringing its products over to AIX,IBM’s UNIX-based operating system. To understand better what theefforts of the VERITAS IBM StrategicBusiness Unit (SBU) are all about,VOX talked to Kevin Reinis, VicePresident of the SBU, and EricBurgener, Director, Product Strategy.

Kevin Reinis has spent 16 years inthe data storage industry. For 14 ofthese years, he was at IBM, mostrecently serving as IBM’s Director ofBusiness Line Management for theStorage Systems Division. In that role,Reinis was responsible for all aspectsof IBM’s Desktop and Entry Serverhard disk drive business, includingP&L management, sales, businesspartnerships, product marketing andproduct life cycle management. When he left IBM, he was the VicePresident and General Manager,PowerVault Storage, at Dell ComputerCorporation before joining VERITAS.

Eric Burgener has had a 14-yearcareer in the high-tech industry, focusing on product marketing andproduct management in clusteringand storage management. Between1996 and 1999, he worked inavailability product management atVERITAS. As the director of productstrategy for the IBM StrategicBusiness Unit at VERITAS, Eric isresponsible for all productmanagement and marketingresponsibilities associated withVERITAS’ IBM business.

Fulfilling the business needsof IBM and VERITAScustomersA conversation with Kevin Reinis,Vice President, IBM Strategic BusinessUnit, VERITAS Software

VOX: Kevin, why did VERITAS createthe IBM Strategic Business Unit towork with IBM?

KR: For VERITAS and IBM to workclosely together makes sense fromboth a business and a customerservice aspect. Both companies andtheir customers stand to benefit.Right now, we are taking all of theavailability technology assets ofVERITAS and mapping them to theneeds of IBM customers. That meansbringing each of VERITAS’ productsto the IBM platform AIX. Initially, theIBM SBU will engage very strongly inthe IBM server market, one area thatwe have not focused very strongly onyet. It is important to note thatVERITAS is dealing with all of IBM,not just with the AIX group.

VOX: How does this effort alignwith VERITAS’ growth perspectives?

KR: VERITAS’ strategy calls forexpansion across platforms, throughtechnological innovation and inworldwide geographic regions. Aswe work with IBM, the avenue ofgeographic expansion becomes wideopen. IBM has a large market sharefor AIX in Asia — for example, inChina and Korea. VERITAS will beable to have a much strongerinternational presence, to the benefitof customers in these areas.

A certain advantage we have is thatthis is really the last major platform

that VERITAS is supporting. All of theothers are already well established interms of VERITAS products andcustom options and agents. The IBMSBU can use the existinginfrastructure VERITAS has and fullyleverage it. As a platform team, ourobjective and our main expertise isinfrastructure enablement. Ourplatform specialists will assist thesales organization and customers, with the full experience of VERITASsupporting them.

VOX: Can you tell us more abouthow customers will benefit from thiscollaboration between VERITAS andIBM?

KR: In many ways, this is theculmination of our heterogeneouscustomer strategy. We know that thisis what the users want. Our fieldrepresentatives have told us for manyyears that customers want to accessVERITAS technology in the AIX space. What customers look for is aframework for their storagemanagement that is able to lowertheir total cost of ownership. Theydon’t want to have to retrain theirsystem administrators for backup, forexample. They want to keep theiradministrative overhead low. We canhelp them do that.

Customers don’t want to changeaway from a hardware or softwaresolution that works well for them. There are customers who like IBMhardware and VERITAS software, andwant to keep using both. With ouropen systems approach, they will beable to use their existing investmentswithout any platform restrictions.

VOX: I understand there are severaldifferent groups within the IBM SBU.Can you tell us what they do?

KR: The IBM Strategic Business Unit(SBU) is a relatively small team. Itmay grow as time goes on, but sincewe can use VERITAS’ resources anddelivery infrastructure, we don’t needto build an additional organization.

There are three main groups in theSBU. One of them concentrates onplatforms, strategy and marketing. They try to understand and learn allthey can about IBM’s various marketsegments, working closely togetherwith other groups in VERITAS todevelop the business intelligence thatis needed be successful. They alsowork with our field organization tomake use of their experience.

A second group, platform supportoperations, are AIX experts whosupport the field operations. Thesepeople are developing a relationshipwith IBM Global Services, with thegoal of providing fully heterogeneous,platform-independent services tocustomers. IBM Global Services is thelargest systems integrator and serviceprovider in the world today.

The third group in the SBU doesstrategic account management. Theytalk to the many different IBMproduct groups and establish workingrelationships there.

VOX: Can you give us a briefoverview of the agreement betweenVERITAS and IBM?

KR: It is important to note thatVERITAS and IBM signed a jointdevelopment agreement, not anOEM agreement. In the agreement,VERITAS and IBM agreed to worktogether at the engineering level toport VERITAS products to AIX andoptimize them for use in thisenvironment. This will require kernelchanges to AIX, which IBM ismaking. IBM will assist VERITAS inmarketing VERITAS’ storage solutions

once they become available, but allfulfillment will be through VERITASand its authorized distributors. Thejoint development agreement is alsobacked by cooperative supportagreements that will give ourcustomers enterprise-quality supportfor VERITAS storage solutionsrunning on IBM platforms.

VOX: IBM is one of the world’smost powerful and best-knowncorporations. How much doesworking with VERITAS mean to IBM?

KR: IBM is eager for us to enter itsmarket, because we can addsignificant value to its offerings, andhelp IBM grow beyond its traditionalareas of strength.

Corporate leadership on both sides isvery strongly engaged in this endeavor. There have been a series of meetingsat very senior levels. For example,Gary Bloom, our CEO, and I metwith Bill Zeitler, who runs all of IBM’stechnology group outside of theirplatforms. We can help IBM and itscustomers with intelligent availabilitytechnology that span all of itsplatforms and solutions. Of course,we have a strong value propositionfor DB2 as well. Some products forDB2 support are already available.Eric will talk more about that.

What it comes down to is that IBMand VERITAS are giving each otheraccess, and increased support fortheir customers, that they did nothave before. Success will be theresult of a balanced, collegialrelationship between all parties.

Bringing VERITAS’intelligent storage softwareto a new platformEric Burgener, Director, ProductStrategy, IBM Strategic Business Unit,VERITAS Software, answered VOX’squestions

VOX: Eric, there are several VERITASdata protection and availabilityproducts already available for theIBM AIX platform now. Can you tellus what some of them are, and whyVERITAS started making themavailable first?

EB: Over the last ten years, it’s beenclear that AIX is one of the topcommercial UNIX serverenvironments, and much of the datathat requires backing up would bestored under it. VERITAS NetBackup™

has been available for AIX since1991, and we have continued tokeep up with new AIX releases, particularly as AIX has moved to atop-three ranking in terms ofimportance in UNIX servers.

According to Dataquest’s servermarket share report for the fiscalyear 2000, Sun, HP and IBM occupythe top three spots. In fiscal year2000, IBM grew its server revenue by21%. In the fourth quarter of theyear, its growth over the samequarter in the year before amountedto 38%, as reported by IDC. Giventhat IBM has a major new platformlaunch coming up in the last quarterof 2001, we expect them to continueto do very well this year.

VERITAS NetBackup for AIX supportsall major databases and messagingproducts today. That includes Oracle,DB2, SQL Server, Sybase, Informixand others, plus ERP systems fromSAP and Peoplesoft and messagingapplications such as Exchange andLotus Notes. Optional NetBackupproducts, such as Vault Extension, are also supported under AIX, andwe expect to add NetBackupAdvanced Reporter™ support forNetBackup for AIX in the first quarterof 2002.

INITIATIVES

EB: Yes. We have alreadyannounced several of these products. They include, for example, a DB2Agent for VERITAS Cluster Server™

for Sun Solaris. VERITAS NetBackupruns on the latest pSeries platformproducts under the latest version ofAIX, 5.1. VERITAS supports the IBMEnterprise Storage Server — ESS, alsoknown as “Shark” — in VERITASFoundation Suite™ and FoundationSuite/HA configurations for Sunenvironments. We are currentlyworking on a VERITAS DatabaseEdition™ for DB2 underSPARC/Solaris. It will be availablebefore the end of the year. There aremany other core VERITAS productsthat will be available under AIX 5 inthe first half of 2002. We will makethe announcements about thembefore the end of 2001.

The AIX server market has a dollarvolume of approximately $5.4 billionand grew at 21% last year. This is avery significant business opportunityfor VERITAS. Collaboration effortswith all of IBM’s business units, including the pSeries, xSeries,Storage Systems Group (disk andtape), Data Management Systems(DB2) and IBM Global Services, isbuilding momentum now and willcontinue to expand with the releaseof VERITAS storage managementsolutions for AIX 5 later this year.

VOX: How is VERITAS supportingDB2, IBM’s database application?

EB: We have shipped somesupported products, and are workingon several others. We support onlinebackup of DB2 databases throughour DB2 Agent for VERITASNetBackup on Solaris, AIX and otherplatforms NetBackup runs under. InMay of this year, we announcedsupport for highly available DB2configurations, using the DB2 Agent

for VERITAS Cluster Server. We arenow preparing a new release ofVERITAS Database Edition for DB2under Solaris, planned for the fourthquarter of 2001. A version ofDatabase Edition for DB2 under AIX 5is scheduled to be released in 2002.

VOX: We have talked a lot aboutUNIX. What about Windows?

EB: As you probably know, IBM isvery active in the Windows worldthrough their xSeries server division— formerly called “Netfinity.”VERITAS Backup Exec™ is the leadingbackup product worldwide forWindows-based workgroup andmidsize environments. Based onGartner Group research VERITASowns 45.1% of the Windows NTand Windows 2000 backup market, making it the leading provider. Theclosest competitor, ComputerAssociates, holds 27.6%. And 80%of those 45.1% are installations ofBackup Exec. This is a natural comingtogether for both companies; wealready have many commoncustomers.

VERITAS NetBackup is the industry-preferred product for data backup inenterprise Windows environments.Customers can use it as a backupserver in the data center or, with ourNetBackup BusinesServer™ edition, indecentralized configurations. Expectto see joint solutions or initiativesaround our backup solutions, whichwill involve several divisions of IBMthat provide storage media on tapeor disk or on appliances.

The inclusion of VERITAS VolumeManager™ technology in Windows2000 opens additional storagemanagement opportunities forVERITAS in direct attached storage, network attached storage andstorage area networks. We areengaging with a number of IBMgroups to pursue these opportunities.

Windows laptop and desktopnetwork-based backup is anotherarea of shared interest. OurNetBackup Professional can play alarge role here. We also have backupand restore management technologythat runs on IBM xSeries systems, supporting Microsoft SQL Server andMicrosoft Exchange. We will leveragethe recent joint initiatives betweenVERITAS and Microsoft in theExchange and SQL Server areas tobroaden the VERITAS solutionsportfolio for the xSeries market. ForMicrosoft Exchange, we have agentsto run with both NetBackup andBackup Exec and specific datamigration solutions such as VERITASNetBackup Storage Migrator™ forMicrosoft Exchange.

We are also engaging with somedivisions of IBM, including the xSeriesgroup, in discussions surroundingsoftware solutions based on VERITASStorage Replicator™. Also, againworking with several IBM groups, weare pursuing pretested configurations. You will see announcements onthese in the next few months.

VOX: Are there any otherinteresting products in the pipeline?

EB: Beyond Windows- and UNIX-based environments, both companiessee Linux as a growing platform witha user community in need of high-quality availability technology. Wewill be announcing Linux initiatives inthe next few months.

One more thing. I can’t give you anymore specifics on this today, butthere will be a major announcementat VERITAS VISION2001™ inNovember. If you’re attending, youwill hear about it there. If not, watchour Web site for news.

VERITAS ON THE MOVE

VERITAS Moves into New GlobalHeadquarters in Historic SiliconValley Location

VERITAS recently began moving employees andfunctions from five distributed facilities into itsnewly built headquarters at 350 Ellis Street inMountain View, California. The 425,000-square-foot complex on 20 acres will houseresearch and development units, executive andmarketing offices, and other teams. VERITASexpects to fully occupy the site by early 2002.The new campus consists of three largebuildings and a central courtyard. Two four-story buildings are dedicated to office andresearch and development space. The third onewill be a one-story Commons Building andfeature a health club, a cafeteria, a store andother amenities, all open to the public.

The location of VERITAS’ headquarters is widelyregarded as one of the founding sites of SiliconValley, formerly occupied by companies such asIntel, Fairchild Semiconductors and RheemSemiconductors. Rheem Semiconductorsowned and occupied the site beginning in1958. Later, Raytheon acquired and operated itfrom 1961 to 1997. The rich history of the sitewill be commemorated by a public display witha timeline of the property's occupancy.

The city of Mountain View praised the newlocation because 40 percent of it has been setaside for open space. This widely exceeds the15 percent required by the city. In addition, thecampus is close to the Middlefield station ofthe Valley Transit Authority (VTA), allowingemployees and visitors to use public transit.VERITAS Software is providing its employeeswith Eco Passes, with which they can enjoy freerides on VTA Bus and Light Rail, seven days aweek. VERITAS Software joins more than 120other leading companies in the Valleyparticipating in VTA’s Eco Pass program.

“The opening of VERITAS Software’s newheadquarters is symbolic of the company'scommitment to expansion and growth. Thenew campus will serve the company well in thecoming decades as we plan to grow to becomea $5 billion company.”

V ERITAS Software and SunMicrosystems Inc. havecollaborated to bring

network attached storage (NAS) intothe mainstream through the storageindustry’s first “open,” enterprise-class data availability appliance forNAS to leverage existing industry-standard components. Together, theyhave also changed the deliveryparadigm for NAS by harnessing thebroad and efficient delivery andsupport capabilities of authorizedchannel partners. The result isimmediate access to a NAS solutionthat minimizes risk, allows for rapiddeployment and protects investmentsin people, processes and products.

Potential and limitations oftraditional networkattached storage

NAS appliances have emerged as asimple and effective solution thathelps companies manage explosivedata growth. NAS appliances attachdirectly to a local area network andare optimized for a single purpose:to provide file services over thenetwork. NAS appliances simplifystorage management byconsolidating storage on a singlenetwork-accessible system and alloweasy-to-use methods for onlinemanagement, clustering and backup. These appliances also let users accessand share files from anywhere on thenetwork, using industry-standard NFSand CIFS protocols — withoutcompromising security or dataintegrity. System managers can placeNAS appliances quickly and cost-

effectively at strategic points on thenetwork, allowing online allocationof storage resources to meetchanging needs.

Although NAS appliances offer manyadvantages, most suffer fromlimitations imposed by proprietaryhardware and software. In turn, these NAS appliances limit options inimportant dimensions such asstorage capacity, availability and dataprotection. These limitations can addsignificantly to the total cost ofownership. VERITAS and Sun haveteamed up to change the deliveryparadigm by providing a turnkeyenterprise-class data availability NASappliance solution.

An innovative softwareapproach to NAS

Data availability for NAS powered byVERITAS and Sun combines VERITASServPoint™ Appliance Software forNAS with Sun Enterprise servers andSun StorEdge T3 arrays to createeasy-to-use, industry-standardappliances — scaling from theworkgroup to the data center. Theappliances are pre-tested, deliveredand supported through mutualchannel partners, resulting inreduced risk, rapid deployment andincreased customer satisfaction.Three configurations are available:

• Workgroup

• Department

• Data Center

Each configuration is available in astandard or high availability version. For high availability and additionalscalability, users can cluster from twoto 32 nodes. These choicessignificantly reduce risks associatedwith NAS implementations, but offerthe flexibility to add processingpower, network bandwidth andstorage capacity to meet growingdemands.

Using the graphical user interface ofVERITAS ServPoint, storagemanagement is easy. You canschedule or initiate PointIntimeCopy™

(PIC), assign shares, reconfigurestorage or replace disks online. Youcan back up your appliance withNDMP or VERITAS NetBackup™, theindustry’s leading backup software. For IT organizations with Solarisexpertise, configuring NAS servers in-house is a fast process. Dependingon the amount of storage, VERITASServPoint typically installs on a Sunserver in less than 30 minutes from asingle CD. If you need a higher levelof availability, the Cluster Wizard inVERITAS ServPoint lets you cluster forhigh availability in minutes.

In short, VERITAS and Sun havetransformed NAS infrastructure froma traditional storage repository, offering basic file services in UNIXand Microsoft Windows NTenvironments, to an enterprise-classsolution with value-added capabilitiessuch as scalability, high availabilityand data protection.

PRODUCTS AND APPLICATIONS

Oracle Corporation has stated thatOracle9i is the first database to offerunlimited scalability and reliabilitythrough Real Application Clusters(RAC). Before Oracle9i, the more thedatabase grew, the more unreliable itbecame. With Oracle9i, you have adatabase that actually increases itsreliability along with its size.

Oracle9i can perform a hot failover inless than 30 seconds from a failureusing Oracle9i RAC in conjunctionwith Oracle Data Guard and newonline maintenance features. Theresult is that the requiredmanagement effort is reduced by asmuch as 40 % because of the self-tuning and self-managing features inOracle9i.

NetBackup for Oracle andOracle9i Real ApplicationClusters

In joint testing at Oracle’s RedwoodShores, Calif., headquarters, theVERITAS NetBackup for Oracle Agentwas installed on two Oracle9i serversin a RAC configuration. Backups werestarted on both Oracle9i servers withNetBackup. Then one of the Oracle9iservers was deliberately disabled, causing the backup to fail on thatserver. However, the backup runningon the other Oracle9i servercontinued processing withoutinterruption and completedsuccessfully. This demonstrated thatNetBackup for Oracle can protectOracle9i databases in a RACenvironment. It also showed thatNetBackup can exploit the power of amultimode Oracle9i RACenvironment. During the testing, weobserved substantial linear backupand recovery performanceimprovements.

Here is an illustration of this test:

NetBackup for Oracle andCheckpoint/Restart

NetBackup for Oracle now supportsthe backup and recoveryCheckpoint/Restart functionality thatcomes with Oracle9i, called“Resumable Backup and Restore” byOracle Corporation. This allows aNetBackup for Oracle user to resumea failed backup from the point offailure. For example, if a backup failsafter it has completed backing up80% of the Oracle9i data files, theNetBackup for Oracle user canresume the backup from the lastsuccessfully backed up data file. Theresult is that the user will now haveto back up only the remaining 20%of the data.

Before NetBackup for Oracle andCheckpoint/Restart, you could notrestart the backup from the pointwhere the backup failed. Instead, you had to restart the Oracle backupfrom the beginning. The benefit ofthis new feature is that NetBackupfor Oracle backups can be completedmore efficiently in a shorter period oftime in the event of failure. Oracle9idatabase performance can improve, because the machine will not beused as frequently for backups. Thisis very important — database backupwindows are rapidly decreasing andcorporate IT resources must be usedmore efficiently.

NetBackup for Oracle andBlock Media Recovery usingOracle9i RMAN

NetBackup for Oracle now supportsthe Block Media Recoveryfunctionality that is available withOracle9i RMAN. Oracle9i BlockMedia Recovery allows corruptedOracle data files to remain onlineduring the recovery of damaged datablocks. With NetBackup for Oracle, you can restore individual data blocksfrom the backup tape while thedatabase is kept online. The mainvalue of this is that the Oracledatabase can continue to accept andprocess user transactions. NetBackupfor Oracle only restores and recoversthe individual data blocks that areneeded to recover the Oracledatabase, and not the entire Oracledata file or tablespace that wasaffected. As a result, Oracle databaserecovery times decrease significantly.

If you do not use NetBackup forOracle and the Oracle9i Block MediaRecovery feature and even a singleblock of any Oracle data file ortablespace is corrupt, recovery takesmuch more effort. In that case, before you can restore and recoverthe Oracle database, you must firstrestore a backup of the entire datafile and apply all of the appropriateOracle redo logs generated for thatfile after the backup was created.

Coming soon: NetBackupAdvanced Block LevelIncremental Agent andOracle9i

VERITAS NetBackup Advanced BlockLevel Incremental (BLI) Agent willoffer enhanced functionality forincremental backups and restores forOracle9i databases. The VERITAS

Advanced BLI Agent does not requirean entire scan of the Oracle9idatabase during the backup process, improving database performance andshortening the backup window.

The NetBackup Advanced BLI Agentallows you to back up and restoreyour database files using BLI StorageCheckpoint technology. NetBackupAdvanced BLI backs up all of thechanged data blocks as needed. TheOracle tables remain online duringthe backup. You need to useNetBackup Advanced BLI Agent toensure that all changed blocks arebacked up.

Improved Oracle9iperformance withNetBackup Advanced BLI

NetBackup Advanced BLI reduces thebackup window and takes theoverhead off the Oracle9i databaseserver. NetBackup Advanced BLI usesthe Oracle9i RMAN Proxy Copyfeature. Proxy Copy allowsNetBackup Advanced BLI to back upthe specified files and gives themedia management software controlover the data transfer between thestorage devices and the Oracle datafiles on disk. The result is thatNetBackup, not Oracle RMAN,decides how and when to move thedata. This procedure transfers mostof the backup overhead to theNetBackup media server, taking mostof the I/O workload away from theOracle production database. Thereduced CPU use on the productionOracle database during backupsresults in a quicker and moreefficient backup.

NetBackup Advanced BLI can recoveran Oracle9i database to a specificpoint in time. NetBackup Advanced

BLI, using the VERITAS File System™

Storage Checkpoint feature that ispart of VERITAS Database Edition™

for Oracle, creates a stable point-in-time view of the file system that isused for recovering the Oracledatabase.

VERITAS Database Edition™ 3.0 for OracleHarnesses the Power of Oracle9i Oracle Disk Manager

By Matt Miller, Product Marketing Manager, VERITAS Software, and Kevin Closson, Senior Staff Software Engineer, VERITAS Software

V ERITAS Database Edition™ forOracle 3.0 leverages the newOracle Disk Manager (ODM)

API — developed jointly by VERITASand Oracle — to deliver improvedmanageability and performance forthe Oracle9i environment. ODMsupplies major enhancements for filesystem I/O, file management and fileidentification. VERITAS DatabaseEdition for Oracle integrates withODM and adds robust, online logicalvolume management for new levelsof efficiency in Oracle databaseadministration and optimizeddeployment of existing IT resources.

The massive growth of data andInternet applications as the basis ofIT infrastructure now positionsrelational databases as mission-critical applications for largeenterprise businesses. According toMeta Group, by 2003, 80% of alldata will reside in databases. At thecenter of the database market isOracle, with a commanding 33.8%market share in the year 2000.

The database administrator (DBA)faces the challenging complexities ofimplementing, managing andmaintaining the significant andcontinuing growth of thesedatabases. DBAs must not only keepup with the rapidly evolving technicaladvances of the database itself, butalso be cognizant of the othercomponents of the IT infrastructure:networks, servers, storage and

operating systems. This is ademanding task, even for the mostskilled DBA.

When Oracle released the Oracle9idatabase in June 2001, a major focuswas on making the database easierto manage. One of the essentialcomponents of this focus was thedevelopment of the Oracle DiskManager (ODM). ODM providesDBAs with a tool for easier diskmanagement and, at the same time, improves system performance. Thisarticle discusses ODM and showshow VERITAS is working with Oracleto increase manageability andimprove performance of Oracle’snewest database environment.

Background on ODM

Prior to January 1999, Oracle andVERITAS completed their specificationfor an optimal I/O interface for theOracle Server and named this newinterface the Oracle Disk Manager. InJanuary 1999, Oracle and VERITASsigned an agreement to implementODM by extending VERITAS FileSystem™ with new, specialized OSinternals and user libraries.

Oracle9i is the first database releaseto use the ODM disk managementAPI. The first commercial softwarebuilt to support ODM is VERITASDatabase Edition™ 3.0 for Oracle, released in September 2001.1

ODM Overview

DBAs face constant challenges inmanaging database storage, particularly if they manage databaseson multiple platforms. In order toeffectively tune I/O performance andmanage disk space, they needplatform-specific expertise to befamiliar with issues such assupported I/O types and port-specificdifferences. Tuning an Oracleinstance for optimal I/O performancein such an environment is complex.

ODM offers a simpler environmentfor managing and tuning Oracledatabases by rendering all platform-specific I/O-related calls and settingsunnecessary. Oracle automaticallydetects if ODM is present and uses itwithout any prior setup. All I/Ooperations are supported on both filesystem files and raw partitions.Because file system files areinherently easier to manage, they areexpected to be the natural choice forOracle9i databases. ODM alsosupports mixed file types (rawpartition and file system files), whichbenefits existing databases andsupports migration from rawpartitions to file system files.

In an Oracle environment, the Oracleserver generates a very complex arrayof I/O system calls, includingscattered reads, single-block reads, direct reads, direct writes, single-block asynchronous writes and large

asynchronous writes. To performthese reads and writes, a largevariety of system calls are used, which increases CPU overhead andreduces performance of the Oracleapplication.

With ODM, a single I/O system callis used to perform all the basic filemanagement functions, includingfile creation, file resizing, fileidentification, file read and filewrite. ODM replaces the complexset of system I/O calls with asimplified architecture thatincreases I/O performance, usessystem resources more efficientlyand improves file management.

The performance goal of ODM is toenable optimal I/O for Oracledatabase applications withperformance equal to or greaterthan that of raw partitions. Earlyperformance test results haveshown that ODM equals theperformance of raw partitions whilerunning on VERITAS File System.

ODM Features

Advanced Support for FileSystem I/O

ODM finally puts to rest the longand tedious debate over whetherto store datafiles in file systems orraw partitions. Historically, DBAschoose between file system filesand raw partition storage byselecting the “lesser of two evils.”File system files are easier tomanage, but raw partitions providebetter performance. An applicationthat doesn’t have substantialperformance requirements when

W W W . V E R I T A S . C O M 25

2 The Archivelog destination must be a directory in a file system. ODM offers improved support for large sequential writes and therefore aids theArchiver process in its task of spooling logs to the offline location.

3 Generically speaking, Oracle9i will do such cleanup in the absence of ODM. However, since ODM executes in the context of the Operating SystemKernel, it is the only way to ensure such cleanup occurs.

4 In file systems that include non-Oracle files, there may be cases in which there are insufficient contiguous blocks in the file system. In this case, ODMcreates the datafile or extension with as many contiguous blocks as possible. This should not happen on file systems used for Oracle datafiles only.

initially deployed may change overtime; in many cases, this forcesadministrators to migrate datafilesfrom file systems to raw partitions.

ODM changes all this. All ODM diskI/O traffic uses a single system callthat supports all Oracle file I/O types, including sequential reads, sequentialwrites, direct reads, direct writes, scattered reads, Database Writerbatch writes, Log Writer Redo Logbuffer flushing and archiving of RedoLogs by the Archiver process. UsingODM, all of these I/O types areenhanced on both file system filesand raw partitions.2

Oracle9i still supports the use ofdatafiles on file systems that do notsupport ODM, using non-ODMinternals. This minimizes disruptionwhile migrating datafiles into anODM-compliant file system. ODMsimplifies configuration, as it requiresno system tunable parameters. It alsoallows administrators to storedatafiles in file system files withoutsacrificing performance or advancedI/O capabilities.

File Management Features

Managing space for large, complexdatabases is time-consuming anddifficult. Routine tasks, such asadding and naming datafiles, areprone to mistakes. Databases withunpredictable growth patterns alsopose significant capacity planningchallenges.

Oracle9i with ODM simplifies thesetasks with atomic file creation andOracle Managed File support.

File Creation with ODM

When the Oracle server is in theprocess of initializing a newdatafile, any number of thingscan go wrong. The DBA mustclean up from the point of failure, which may entail removing a file3

from a file system that was toosmall for the data being added. On large systems with manyexisting datafiles, these cleanupoperations can be dangerous.

ODM reduces the failures that canoccur when adding a datafile to adatabase by using a simplified setof file creation routines:

• odm_create()

• odm_commit()

• odm_abort()

An Oracle datafile is not a file inthe file system until Oracle hasfully initialized it and calledodm_commit(). If an Oracle failureoccurs during the operation, before odm_commit(), the filenever even appears in the filesystem.

Additionally, datafiles created withODM consist of contiguous filesystem blocks. In traditional filesystem files, the disk space is notallocated contiguously, and thepotential degradation of tablescan throughput fornoncontiguous datafiles is one ofthe reasons DBAs choose rawpartitions for datafile storage.4

ODM files look and feel like anyfile system files, without specialnaming extensions or file systemmount options.

V O X V E R I T A S 4 . 326

Oracle Managed File Support

To reduce administrativecomplexity, Oracle9i offers afeature called Oracle ManagedFiles (OMF). OMF managesdatafile attributes, such as filenames, file locations, storageattributes and whether the file isused in a database. For acomprehensive overview of theOMF feature set, see the Oracle9iAdministrator’s Guide.

OMF requires file system storage. It eliminates the mundane task ofproviding unique file names andoffers dynamic spacemanagement using the auto-extend functionality of Oracle9i.OMF should be used only in filesystems residing in striped/RAID-configured logical volumes thatcan support dynamic file systemgrowth. File systems intended forOMF usage should support large(greater than 2GB), extensible filesto enable tablespace auto-extension, a key integration pointwith VERITAS Database Edition3.0 for Oracle, which providesthese capabilities.

Managing a large databasetraditionally means tracking alarge number of files. Using OMFallows DBAs to think oftablespaces, online redo log filesand control files as databaseobjects rather than as collectionsof datafiles — simplifyingdatabase administration. OMFfiles are created with the auto-extend capability by default.Using this feature significantlyreduces the capacity planning

associated with maintainingexisting applications anddeploying new databases. In thepast, DBAs have been cautiousabout using auto-extend, due toconcerns over file systemfragmentation. ODM eliminatesthis concern through theintroduction of the odm_resize()routine, which allocatescontiguous file system blocks tofiles. Eliminating potentialfragmentation assures that tableand index scan throughput doesnot degrade as the tablespacegrows.

File Identification

Traditionally, the Oracle serveruses a standard system call toobtain a file descriptor from theoperating system. It then usesthat file descriptor to perform fileoperations such as reading andwriting.

File descriptors require anallocation structure in the OSkernel. Although they are notlarge data structures, a serverhosting a large Oracle databasewill have many kernel structuresallocated as file descriptors foropen files. For example, consideran Oracle database consisting of200 datafiles, with 1,000processes attached to theinstance. If all processes open allfiles, the OS kernel would need toprovide for 200,000 active filedescriptors.

To support file open calls for allprocesses on all datafiles, DBAsmust tune both system-wide and

5 Such an occurrence would be due to faulty administration. ODM is added assurance that such a mistake won’t happen. If running Oracle 7 or 8, continue to use VERITAS Quick I/O for proven I/O performance equal to that of Raw I/O.

per-process limits. For a largedatabase, the DBA may need toset the system-wide limit for openfiles to more than 500,000 (aone-terabyte database with fileslimited to 2 GB would have 500datafiles; supporting 1000attached processes requires500,000 active file descriptors).

Although today’s UNIXimplementations can handle thesekernel requirements, this is clearlywasteful. Kernel-managed filedescriptors require concurrencycontrol. On multiprocessorsystems, the kernel open file list istypically protected with locking. On an active server, this lockinguses an unnecessary amount ofprocessing power.

An ODM File Identifier replacesthe file descriptor, eliminating thisOS overhead. ODM file identifiersare shareable — once a file hasbeen identified in ODM,subsequent processes using theshared identifier do not incur anykernel overhead.

ODM file identifiers also enhancereliability. Calls to access a filethrough ODM are regulated usinga special key value that Oracleattributes to a database. For largecomplex server systems hostingmultiple applications and Oracleinstances, this eliminates thepossibility of a datafile beingopened by two nonparticipatinginstances.5 Without ODM, it isconceivable that this could occur.

Improving Backup Performance with the NewIntelligent Image Option in VERITAS Backup Exec™

for Windows NT and Windows 2000

By Kevin Mikalsen, Product Marketing Manager, VERITAS Software

V ERITAS Backup Exec™ forWindows NT and Windows2000, version 8.6 equips you

with many features to improve dataprotection reliability while increasingyour backup performance. IntelligentImage Option, a separately licensedand priced option (it runs withBackup Exec Server Edition,Advanced Server Edition and SmallBusiness Server Edition) cansignificantly boost the speed ofbacking up data directly from a localmedia server via SCSI or fibrechannel. See also page xx for anoverview of new and enhancedcapabilities in Backup Exec 8.6.

Keys to upgrading yourbackup rates

Intelligent Image Option upgradesbackup rates and data protection for

active servers with live file systemscontaining a very large number ofsmaller or compressed files. It deliversoptimal benefits when used withBackup Exec Open File Option onservers with many open files.

Intelligent Image Option acceleratescomplete backups when deployed ona server with a file system containingthousands or even millions of files.Although servers with a relativelysmall number of larger files may notrealize a performance boost overtraditional file-by-file backups, usersmay still benefit from IntelligentImage Option’s consistent point-in-time backups.

High-performance backup devices(whether tape or hard disk) maximizethe speed of Intelligent ImageOption, since backup rates are

limited by devices that are muchslower than the file system.

Three steps to point-in-timebackups of open files

The integrated open file technologybehind Backup Exec Intelligent ImageOption creates a snapshot or point-in-time image of the volume whileother applications continue to sendread and write requests to thevolume. Intelligent Image Optionthen searches for and locates theobjects selected for backupprotection and creates acomprehensive “map” of the filesystem. Next, Intelligent ImageOption writes the data as a singleimage directly to the backup mediaat very high speed.

Page 28: VOX Shell July00-3 - Chris Lemoine...vox veritas the voice of verit as issue / four.three the ability to execute, the power to change what intelligent storage software means for your

Faster backups with reliableprotection for open files

• The greater the number of files, the greater the backupperformance improvementprovided by Intelligent ImageOption. When a server containstens of thousands or more smallerfiles, backing up data as a singleimage is much faster thantraditional backup, evenconsidering the overhead imposedby map creation.

• Compared to the traditionalmethod of writing data from theselected files to the backup mediaone at a time, Intelligent ImageOption writes files as a singleimage, using fewer host serverCPU cycles and freeing upvaluable resources for otherapplications.

• Unlike some raw-image backupsolutions, Intelligent Image Optionreduces backup mediaconsumption and increasesbackup speed by not backing upunused or temporary space, thereby decreasing the overallbackup volume.

• During this entire backup process,Backup Exec Intelligent ImageOption uses the same open filetechnology found in Open FileOption to deliver safe and reliablepoint-in-time backup of active filesystems with many open files. In atraditional Backup Exec file-by-filebackup, open files might bebacked up while otherapplications are writing to them.Without open file technology, thedata could become corrupted andunreasonable, or the open filesmight be skipped and not backedup at all.

Intelligent Image Optionfeatures

Flexibility distinguishes Backup ExecIntelligent Image Option from otherimage solution backups:

• Backup and restore ofcompressed files – IntelligentImage Option increasesperformance by not expandingcompressed files during backup, unlike traditional methods that

expand compressed files beforecopying them to the backupmedia.

• Backup and restore of openfiles – Open file technology keepsapplications and datacontinuously available duringbackup and restore operations. This technology is installed at thesame time as Intelligent ImageOption. If Backup Exec Open FileOption is installed already, it isautomatically upgraded, ifnecessary.

• Backup of encrypted filesusing nonimage methods –Encrypted files are backed upusing a nonimage method in thesame job in which the imagemethod is used for other files.

• Full, incremental anddifferential backup methods –Intelligent Image Option retainsyour access to these methods soyou can continue routine backupstrategies developed fortraditional backups.

• Individual file, multiple filesand entire volume selectionfor restores – For restores, makeselections down to the file level. All selected files are restored tothe destination disk in originalvolume order in a single pass.

• Restores of compressed andnoncompressed files – If thevolume the files are beingrestored to does not supportcompression, the files will berestored in their expanded form.

• Restores using VERITAS BackupExec Intelligent DisasterRecovery™ – Intelligent ImageOption is available when usingIntelligent Disaster Recovery tocreate a bootable tape image, bootable CD or a set of recoverydiskettes that contain all the filesrequired to recover the WindowsNT and Windows 2000 mediaserver.

• Product integration – RunIntelligent Image Option from theBackup Exec administrationconsole, from the Backup ExecCommand Line applet or from theBackup Exec Network StorageExecutive console.

Minimizing IntelligentImage Option backup time

During the Intelligent Image Optionbackup process, the open filetechnology imposes some overheadwhen it creates a temporaryworkspace called the “staticvolume.” You can minimize theimpact of this overhead and furthershorten backup time by eitheroptimizing the size of the staticvolume or by eliminating the needfor it altogether via the use of a splitmirror.

Optimizing static volume size

The larger the size of the staticvolume, the longer it takes to create.Automatic size defaults are providedwithin Intelligent Image Option;however, the static volume can bemade smaller via the use of theBackup Exec Open File Optionwizard, which is available whenIntelligent Image Option is installed.Under certain conditions, you can setthe static volume smaller than itsdefault calculated size withoutnegative effect on the backupprocess, resulting in improvedbackup time.

As a guideline, if the amount of dataselected for backup is at least 30%less than the total amount of data, the backup may run faster if theOpen File Option wizard is used todecrease the size of the staticvolume. Caution is advised whenentering a specific size for the staticvolume, since the specified size willbe created regardless of the size ofthe volume being backed up. Thiscould result in job failure if there isinsufficient space available.

Detailed information about changingthe static volume size via the OpenFile Option wizard is in theAdministrator’s Guide for VERITASBackup Exec for Windows NT andWindows 2000.

Boost performance even moreusing split mirrors

An application produces a split mirrorof a volume when it creates an exactduplicate or copy of a volume at aspecific point in time. IntelligentImage Option can use this static splitmirror instead of creating its ownstatic volume, while the originalvolume is online, active anddynamically evolving. This results in afaster total backup by eliminating theneed for open file technology andregaining the time normally requiredfor creating the static volume andother related preprocessing.

Create split mirrors using VERITASVolume Manager™ or CompaqEnterprise Volume Manager. Achievefaster backup performance using theBackup Exec Command Line Appletto run an alias backup withIntelligent Image Option selected.

Measurable backupperformance improvementswith Intelligent ImageOptionThe results of performance tests onan active file system illustrate theperformance benefit that IntelligentImage Option offers: tests. The testconfiguration included a host serverwith quad Pentium III 700Mhzprocessors, 2GB total physical RAM,Ultra160 SCSI HBA and two 9GB7200rpm SCSI hard drives with anUltrium tape drive as the IntelligentImage Option backup device. It alsoinvolved a total of 60,800 files.

The first tests compare traditionalfile-by-file backup using Backup ExecOpen File Option to protect openfiles versus backup using IntelligentImage Option. The use of IntelligentImage Option increased total backupperformance by more than 30%. Putanother way, traditional file-by-filebackup took 43% longer to

complete than the Intelligent ImageOption–based backup.

A second test highlights howIntelligent Image Optionperformance can be improved evenfurther by optimizing the staticvolume size. The Intelligent ImageOption results described above useda cache partition created withautomatic defaults to calculate itsrequired size. Another test wasperformed under the sameconditions except the static volumewas created using the Open FileOption wizard to manually set thestatic volume size to a smaller, yetstill adequate, size. The performancedifference was significant. TheIntelligent Image Option backupusing the optimized static volumesize was 44% faster than the backupusing the default-calculated staticvolume size.

Highly fragmented or completelydefragmented file systems canachieve similar results. In the tests

described above, the file systemswere fragmented up to 47%. Thisfragmentation is typical of active filesystems that contain a very highnumber of smaller files that are in aconstant state of change. A secondset of tests performed with filesystem fragmentation at zero yieldedperformance improvements close tothose of tests that were run onsystems with high file fragmentation.

Please not that a number of variableswill affect Intelligent Image Optionperformance. These include systemload, machine resources, backupdevice, number of files, average filesize, temporary cache partition size, system fragmentation and others.

Background

What is Dynamic Multipathing (DMP)?

DMP is a method of providing two or more hardwarepaths to a single drive. For example, the physical hardwarecan have at least two paths, such as c1t1d0 and c2t1d0,directing I/O to the same drive. VERITAS Volume Manager™

arbitrarily selects one of the two names and creates asingle device entry, then transfers data across both pathsto spread the I/O.

Figure 1: Two I/O paths to a singledrive or array

DMP is enabled bydefault. VolumeManager detectsmultipath systems with

Universal Worldwide Device Identifiers (WWD IDs) andmanages multipath targets, such as disk arrays, whichdefine policies for using more than one path.

Benefits of DMP

High availability – DMP introduces greater reliabilitythrough a path failover mechanism. In the event of a lossof one connection to a disk, the system continues toaccess the critical data over the other sound connectionsuntil the failed path is replaced.

Improved performance – DMP allows for greater I/Othroughput by balancing the I/O load uniformly acrossmultiple I/O paths to the disk device.

Paths supported in VERITAS Volume Manager 2.5.xvs. Volume Manager 3.x

On Volume Manager 2.5.x, DMP supports 42 paths. OnVolume Manager 3.x and beyond, DMP supportsunlimited paths.

Active/active disk arrays“Active/active” is a DMP-specific term for disk arrays thatallow I/Os to disks through multiple paths simultaneously, without causing any performance overhead. For these diskarrays, in the 2.5.x releases, Volume Manager follows theround-robin policy for issuing I/Os across available paths.

In its 3.x releases, VERITAS Volume Manager uses the“balanced path” policy to distribute I/Os across availablepaths. Load-balancing ensures that I/O throughput can beincreased by using the full bandwidth of all paths.Sequential I/Os starting within a certain range are sentdown the same path to optimize I/O throughput usingdisk track caches. However, large sequential I/Os that donot fall within this range are distributed across multiplepaths to take advantage of load balancing.

These disk arrays are used in load-balancing mode bydistributing I/Os across all available paths. Some examplesof these types of disk array are A5X00 (SENA) disk arraysfrom Sun, the SPARC Storage Array (SSA), EMCSymmetrix, Hitachi 7700E.

Active/passive disk arrays“Active/passive” is a DMP-specific term for disk arrays inwhich controllers “own” logical units (LUNs)/disks. Onlythe controller that “owns” the LUN issues I/Os to theseLUNs. The controller that “owns” a LUN is called the“primary” path and the alternate controller is referred toas the “secondary” path to the LUN.

Accessing a disk/LUN through multiple available paths onsuch disk arrays is not allowed. If a LUN on anactive/passive disk array is accessed simultaneously viamultiple paths, the “ownership” of the LUN shifts backand forth across the controllers, causing the “ping-pong”effect. Because changing ownership is a time-consuming

operation, this can cause immense performancedegradation.

For such disk arrays, DMP policy is to use the availableprimary path as long as it is accessible. DMP shifts I/Os tothe secondary path only when the primary path fails. Thisis called “failover” or “standby” mode of operation for I/Os.Examples of such disk arrays are Hitachi 5700E, Hitachi5800E, Nike (Model 10, 20), Galaxy and Purple (T300).

Scheduling I/Os

Volume Manager 2.5.x

DMP follows the round-robin policy of scheduling I/Osacross available paths. I/Os within 64K on either side ofthe last I/O are sent down the same path. This sequentialI/O detection is done in Volume Manager 2.5.x for A5000disks only.

If DMP cannot identify multiple paths on Volume Manager2.5.5 on Solaris 2.6, it may lack the proper license to turnon multipathing, or the disks are not returning uniqueserial number information in Standard Inquiry data inbytes 36–47.

Volume Manager 3.x

DMP follows a “balanced path policy” for scheduling I/Osacross available paths for Active/Active disk arrays such asEMC.

Balance random I/Os across all the available paths usingthe following method:

iopath = ((bp->b_blkno >> 7) % dmpp->tpaths);̀

This means that all I/Os starting within a certain 64Krange go through the same path. I/Os that start withinother 64K ranges on the disk will be routed through adifferent path.

dmpp->tpaths indicates the total number of paths to thisdisk, and iopath is the path used for the I/O. I/Os are sentdown only those paths that are enabled. In other words, the I/O load is balanced across all the available paths, andsequential I/Os within a 64K range are sent down thesame path.

Path failureIf a path fails, alternate paths are used. If all access pathshave failed, the disk is considered to have failed. A diskdriver failure will not cause a DMP failure.

The flow of event notification during I/O failure is asfollows:

Page 32: VOX Shell July00-3 - Chris Lemoine...vox veritas the voice of verit as issue / four.three the ability to execute, the power to change what intelligent storage software means for your

V O X V E R I T A S 4 . 332

1. Device driver/HBA controller issues SCSI III commands todisk and command fails

2. OS kernel trying to issue write fails, generates an error

3. Based on the error code, the DMP driver takes thecorrect action and fails over the I/O to the alternatehost-bus adapter

4. I/O is reissued down alternate path

The failover process can be very fast for an active/activedisk array like the XP256 or EMC Symmetrix. The DMPdriver itself does not take any time to switch over. However, the total time for failover is dependent on howlong the underlying disk driver retries the commandbefore giving up. On HP, the user can set the PowerFailtimeout value for that disk.

DMP allows the administrator to indicate to the DMPsubsystem in Volume Manager whether the connection isrepaired or restored. This is called DMP reconfiguration. The reconfiguration procedure also allows the detection ofnewly added devices, as well as devices that are removedafter the system is fully booted (if the operating systemdetects them properly).

Disabling DMPNOTE: The following procedures will require a systemreboot for the changes to take effect.

Typically, DMP is disabled when other multipathing driverscannot coexist with DMP, or when DMP does not handlecertain devices properly.

Disabling DMP on an HP system

Follow these steps:

1. Stop vxconfigd using the command vxdctl stop

2. Save the /stand/system file as /stand/system.vxdmp byexecuting the command

cp /stand/system /stand/system.vxdmp

3. Save the /stand/vmunix file as /stand/vmunix.vxdmp byexecuting the command

cp /stand/vmunix /stand/vmunix.vxdmp

4. Edit the /stand/system file and remove the vxdmp entry

5. Run the /etc/vx/bin/vxdmpdis script

If all of the steps are completed successfully, reboot thesystem. When the system comes up, DMP will have beenremoved.

Verify this by running the vxdmpadm command. Thefollowing message should appear:

Volume Manager:vxdmpadm: ERROR: vxdmp moduleis not loaded on the system. Command invalid.

Also the command vxdisk list <da_name> should notdisplay any multipathing information.

Disabling DMP on a Solaris system

In Volume Manager 2.5.x and Volume Manager 3.x, theuser can disable DMP by following these steps:

1. Remove the directories /dev/vx/dmp and /dev/vx/rdmpand any files in these directories

2. Use the following commands to link the /dev/vx/dmpand /dev/vx/rdmp directories to the /dev/dsk and/dev/rdsk directories, respectively:

# ln -s /dev/dsk /dev/vx/dmp

# ln -s /dev/rdsk /dev/vx/rdmp

3. Remove the line forceload: drv/vxdmp from the/etc/system file by commenting out that entry to * forceload: drv/vxdmp or by deleting that line

4. Go to the /kernel/drv directory and execute thefollowing:

# mv ./vxdmp ./vxdmp.orig

Considerations for Disabling DMP in VolumeManager 3.1.1

Adopting the current method of removing the DMP layeraltogether is not flexible. This takes away the multipathingfunctionality that DMP provides for other devices in thesystem.

Two new features, coexistence with third-partymultipathing solutions and platform-independent devicenaming, require that the DMP driver always be present inthe system. In Volume Manager 3.1.1, customers will beable to prevent Volume Manager (DMP) from multipathingsome or all devices on the system, without removing theDMP layer.

The user will be presented with interfaces throughvxinstall and vxdiskadm to do the following:

• Suppress devices from Volume Manager’s view

• Unsuppress devices that were previously suppressedfrom Volume Manager’s view

• Prevent devices from being multipathed by VERITASDMP

• Allow VERITAS DMP multipathing for devices thatwere prevented earlier

The user can specify the devices for the above operationsusing the following mechanisms:

Page 33: VOX Shell July00-3 - Chris Lemoine...vox veritas the voice of verit as issue / four.three the ability to execute, the power to change what intelligent storage software means for your

W W W . V E R I T A S . C O M 33

• Using a VendorID:ProductID combination, e.g.,EMC:SYMMETRIX

• Using controller name, e.g., c1

• Specifying path names, e.g., c1t0d9

• All devices on the system

Files are used to keep the exclude information the userspecified (through vxinstall or vxdiskadm).

• Devices that the user has suppressed from VolumeManager’s view are kept in the file/etc/vx/vxvmexclude

• Devices that the user has specified not bemultipathed are kept in the file/etc/vx/vxdmpexclude

Enabling DMP on an HP System (whereDMP is fully disabled)Follow these steps:

1. Stop vxconfigd using the command vxdctl stop

2. Save the /stand/system file as /stand/system.vxdmp byexecuting the command

cp /stand/system /stand/system.vxdmp

3. Save the “/stand/vmunix” file as “/stand/vmunix.vxdmp”by executing the command

cp /stand/vmunix /stand/vmunix.vxdmp

4. Edit the /stand/system file and add the vxdmp entry toit (after the VxVm entry)

5. Run the /etc/vx/bin/vxdmpen script

If all the steps are completed successfully, reboot thesystem. When the system comes up, DMP should beenabled. Verify this by running the vxdmpadm command. This command should show multipathing information. Also, the command vxdisk list <da_name> shouldshow multipathing information.

Retrieving Information on DMP NodesThe vxdmpadm utility is an administrative interface to theDMP subsystem. Using the vxdmpadm utility, you can:

• List all controllers connected to disks attached to thehost

• List all the paths connected to a particular controller

• List all paths under a DMP device

• Retrieve the name of the DMP device correspondingto a path

• Enable or disable a host controller

• Rename an enclosure

This issue, in a break with tradition, insteadof answering several of your questions, Iam going to look a little more closely atiSCSI. Several of you have asked me aboutthis and what it means to storage — theconcept seems to be on everybody’s mindright now.

What is iSCSI?

One of the new technologies that is emerging in the fieldof storage is iSCSI, or IP Storage, also referred to asInternet Storage or Storage over IP. There are also vendor-specific names. All of these mean the same thing —applying standard TCP/IP that is used for standardEthernet connectivity to storage.

What does this mean? Well, most computers attachdirectly to their storage through the Small ComputerSystem Interface (SCSI) and run a block-level protocol togive the best performance. In the past, this has meantthat the furthest the storage could be from the computerwas a few meters. Even though you could buy additionalhardware called SCSI extenders, the distance was stilllimited to less than a 100 meters (ca. 330 feet), withoutdegrading the performance. Then storage area networks(SANs) happened. SANs provided a new mechanism forattaching storage to servers using a serial optical interfacecalled fibre channel, which transported the SCSIcommands to give access to the traditional storage. Thisincreased the distance by which you could easily separatethe storage from the server to more than 10 kilometers(ca. 6.2 miles), creating a new flexibility in storagearchitectures. In addition, it was a way to increase theconnectivity, so more servers could attach to the samestorage without the prohibitive cost of a multiported diskcontroller. Separating storage from the server andallowing it to be connected in virtually any way required,SANs created a new level of flexibility. However, thisrequired a whole new infrastructure, including fibre-basedswitches and hubs as well as the fibre interconnect.

Administrators neednew skills toeffectively managethe new network, and new tools tohelp them.

It seemed like a lotof trouble and effortwhen all thecomputers werealready attached toa network. Was itpossible to use the

existing network rather than having to introduce a newone? The answer is, of course, yes — and so the iSCSImovement began.

Why wasn’t this done before?

The standard speed of an Ethernet network is 10Mbps(megabits per second). While many organizations are nowupgrading to 100Mbps, it is still not fast enough forefficient storage using block-level protocols like SCSI. Incomparison, fibre channel was introduced in 1997 at1,000Mbps and now has been upgraded to 2,000Mbps.However, with the current availability of Gigabit Ethernet(1 Gigabit per second = 1,000 Mbps) and with 10GbpsEthernet in the foreseeable future, the network will soonhave the bandwidth to sustain storage transfer rates thatare comparable to those of SANs1. This will mean that ITdepartments can use not only the existing infrastructure, but also the same management tools. The skills of atraditional network administrator will easily adapt to thestorage network. Another key factor is that the hardwarefor Ethernet networks has been around for many years, and compatibility is not an issue. This is still a challengefor SANs.

One of the fundamental differences in using TCP/IPinstead of fibre channel protocols is the way in which theclient consumes the packets of data. In TCP/IP, the packetsare sorted and assembled in a buffer before beingprocessed by the application. When using fibre channel,

The Doctor Explains: iSCSI

1 Note that there will be 10Gbps Fibre Channel as well as 10Gbps Ethernet, and they’ll use essentially an identical physical interface. 1Gbps fibrechannel and Gbps Ethernet use the same physical parts. For historical reasons, the actual data rates are slightly different.

Page 35: VOX Shell July00-3 - Chris Lemoine...vox veritas the voice of verit as issue / four.three the ability to execute, the power to change what intelligent storage software means for your

W W W . V E R I T A S . C O M 35

the packets can be written straight to the application, saving time and hence improving applicationperformance. However, within a few years we will seespecialist interface cards that will carry out this operation, removing it from the main processor. This will result in abig performance improvement over the currentmechanism. Even with the new bandwidths, there will belatency issues for distances over 20 kilometers (ca. 12.4miles); the size of iSCSI networks will be limited.

Who are the players?

The list of companies that are investing in iSCSI is verylong. It includes big network players such as Cisco andIntel and leading operating system and server vendorssuch as IBM and HP, along with many storage hardwarevendors such as EMC and Adaptec. VERITAS is exploringthe technology, so are other software providers and manynew start-ups including Nishan Systems, Falconstor,SANValley and Alacritech are becoming involved. At aniSCSI event organized by the Storage Network IndustryAssociation (SNIA) earlier this year, more than 30companies took part — proving that iSCSI is taken veryseriously.

Does iSCSI mean the end of today’s SANs?

Some people say that it will, because iSCSI will useexisting infrastructure and management. However, sincedeployment is 12 to 18 months away, and SANs havenow been around and deployed for more than two years,it is unlikely that they will be displaced. Some observersthink iSCSI is a way for smaller companies that have notinvested in a SAN to gain most of the benefits a SAN canoffer without the added complexity or cost.

Be aware that most of the iSCSI supporters also supportfibre channel. Most of the players realize that both iSCSIand SANs using fibre channel have their place in theenterprise and can justify organizational initiatives forboth.

What does this new technology mean forVERITAS?

In one way, iSCSI makes very little difference for VERITASproducts. It is just another interconnect that uses SCSIcommands and has TCP/IP as its transport protocol. If thedrivers work, our products will as well. However, there are

other ways to exploit this new interconnect. Developersneed to create a new set of functionality to allow forthings like storage pools on iSCSI and third-party copytechnologies. Discovery of devices will be as important iniSCSI as it is in the SAN. Without being able to easily findand use devices as they appear on the network, thebenefits will be limited. VERITAS is working with ourpartners and the standards industry to ensure that ourproducts use the new iSCSI functionality transparently toadministrators. This will mean that if you start to use iSCSIin your organization, our products can incorporate it andwork seamlessly with it.

and in the computer lab, and ExcelMath is a program that inspiresstudents to take math to the nextlevel, already used at Capri for threeyears. The $9,000 grant given toCapri will be used for these twoprograms.

Girl Scouts of Santa Clara Countyprovides a unique program to itsmembers: In-School Scouting (ISS),now in its tenth year, is asupplementary science andtechnology program for studentsbetween grades two and six in eastSan Jose. The public educationsystem has difficulties in findingsufficient teaching staff trained toteach hands-on science to its youngstudents. T elia, online at www.telia.com, is a service providerheadquartered in Sweden and active in almost 40countries worldwide. The company has approximately

30,000 employees. Its core services are mobile services, fixednetwork services and Web portal services. The last includesDedicated Web Hosting. Customers in the Scandinaviancountries are extremely sophisticated in all aspects ofcommunication and Internet technology. Telia aims todistinguish itself from its competitors by being the first tooffer the latest and best technology and by offering user-friendly and responsive services.

Customers want performance, scalability,availability

Telia’s growth has been very rapid, especially in the Webhosting area, which is its newest service offering. Telialaunched the Dedicated Web Hosting services in April of thisyear. The 24/7 services give customers the means to have afull presence on the World Wide Web without having to hireand train their own dedicated staff and make investments inhardware and software. Telia owns, manages and maintainsthe complex service infrastructure, including hardware, software and communications. The services are available tocustomers under both UNIX and Microsoft Windows 2000.Customers require high performance, full security, uninterrupted availability of data and scalability of the servicesas data volumes keep expanding.

Ulf Hedin, Product Manager for Dedicated Web Hosting, explains the customers’ mind-set. “Today the Internet hasmoved on from being all media hype about user interfacesand graphical design to become part of the mission-criticalbusiness infrastructure of many companies. At least this iswhat today’s customers expect. For them there’s no differencebetween how corporate Web sites must work and the waycustomer service, telephone sales or call centers work.”

”Our standardized anddedicated environment meanswe can guarantee ourenterprise customers dataavailability, which is a majorcompetitive advantage for us.”

— Ulf Hedin, Product Manager, DedicatedWeb Hosting Services, Telia

VERITAS’ technology, responsiveness andunderstanding of customers support serviceinnovation

Telia decided to offer a high level of data availability as acompetitive advantage. After evaluating several softwareproviders, it settled on VERITAS and a full range of VERITASavailability and storage management products. Today, thecompany is using VERITAS NetBackup™, VERITAS File ServerEdition™, VERITAS Database Edition™, VERITAS Cluster Server™,and VERITAS Foundation Suite™, which includes VERITAS FileSystem™ and VERITAS Volume Manager™. As Ulf Hedinexplains, “There was more than one factor in favor ofVERITAS. First, VERITAS is very strong in software forclustering and backup, and simply offers the best solutions.Second, VERITAS has a solid strategy for serverless backupthat is going to become essential to our SAN environment.VERITAS also has a great deal of expertise to offer. They speakthe same language as the customer and they are availablewhen needed. In other words, customer focus.”

Hedin explains how the services are set up. “The basic ideabehind Telia Dedicated Web Hosting is that we use astandardized server farm as a controlled environment in whicheverything is in place from the start — from firewalls toVERITAS’ solutions for data availability ... [to] backup powerand cooling — everything. Our customers can use anyapplications they like as long as they are Web-based. This is amajor difference compared with traditional outsourcing, where services are still produced in a mixed customerenvironment.”

Exceeding customer expectations with focus onthe user experience

This makes Telia Dedicated Web Hosting a platform tailored tothe Web, databases, applications, intranets and extranets, aswell as integrated business solutions. Telia’s standardconfiguration guarantees 98 percent availability with aservice-level agreement (SLA) for the operations environment.Every customer is assigned a dedicated Telia support engineerand can enjoy the extra resilience of an environment that ismonitored around the clock. The solution is based on storagearea networks (SANs). Two other SLAs include asemiredundant basic package that offers 99 percentavailability and a fully redundant package that offers 99.5percent availability.

SUCCESS STORY

“Our offering goes beyond the averageindustry value proposition by measuringavailability as perceived by the user. It’sno use if every single component in thesolution works if the applicationdoesn’t respond. We therefore decidedto use network robots that relentlesslylook up pages on our customers’ sites. In cases where there’s no response, analert notifies our support staff, whothen deal with the problem. This levelof data availability is harder to deliverbut also much more important tocustomer satisfaction and theperception of superior service quality,”says Ulf Hedin.

Availability infrastructureenables business growth

The design process and implementationfor the new availability infrastructuretook almost a year. Telia implementedthe VERITAS products simultaneously. Itused one of VERITAS’ Swedish partners,Proact, for consulting during theproject. On the Intel platform side ofthe service, it uses Dell servers runningunder Windows 2000, Windows NTand Linux. On the UNIX side, there areSun servers under Solaris. Brocadeswitches power the SAN. With itsbundled management tools, Teliasupports Oracle, Microsoft SQL Serverand Sybase. VERITAS technology inplace, Telia is looking to furthercentralize data center management andreduce the administrative overhead. This frees up technicians to work oncustomer issues instead of routine datamanagement tasks.

VERITAS availability solutions make iteasy for Telia to support its fast growthwithout any service interruption and tocontinously add new customers asdemand increases. “Our standardizedand dedicated environment means wecan guarantee our enterprise customersdata availability, which is a majorcompetitive advantage for us. Duringthe past few years the Internet hasbecome an all-important vehicle forinformation, communication and trade. This requires generous opening hours. Our role is to act as a power plant inthe information economy by providing

Rising demand for reliable, available Web hosting services

The success of the Telia Dedicated WebHosting services would show that thecompany made the right businessdecision in offering high levels of dataavailability to its customers. TheSwedish Labour Market Board is usingthe service for a project of theEuropean Community: a European CV(curriculum vitae) database. Othercustomers are in education, pharmaceutics, forestry and the travelindustry. Says Hedin, “Because we canguarantee availability from day onewe’ve already noticed a huge interestfor our business concept. More andmore companies are learning about thehigh cost of not having sufficient dataavailability, either by experiencing thisthemselves or by seeing othersexperience it. It’s just not an option.”

During 2002, the market for Webhosting services is expected to grow 60percent as companies increasinglyensure data availability and cut theircosts. Ovum, an industry observer andanalyst in the UK, predicts that e-commerce will be a key driver in 2001and 2002 and that sophisticatedservices such as Telia’s Dedicated WebHosting will successively dominatedemand.

“The Swedish market will growexponentially because companies’needs are not being satisfied at alltoday. As more and more functionalityis moved into Web environments, they’ll become increasingly complex tomanage. Also, broadband connectionswill lead to even higher performanceexpectations. Environments withbroadband customers require contentand services to be delivered promptlyand on demand. Improvedcommunication capacity means thatuser expectations must be met witheven faster response times,” says UlfHedin.
