 1. Place the labels FRONT  CENTRE  BACK and OPEN  MID  CLOSE in the vowel quadrilateral below. Then, locate the 12 pure vowels of English. Finally, state whether each vowel is articulated with ROUNDED, UNROUNDED, or NEUTRAL lips. 2. Now locate the pure vowel symbols which begin the glides for each of the eight diphthongs, and the pure vowel symbols that end the gl ides. Then draw an arrow to show the direction in which the tongue moves. Follow the example. Which diphthongs are CLOSING? Which are CENTRING? Why?
