    ✩ ✩ ✩ ✩Register and Vote!

Never underestimate the power of the ballot. One of the greatest strengths of America is that all citi-

zens are provided a voice through the voting booth. And every vote does count! Many an election has been won by a handful of votes or even just one vote.

But before you can vote in an election, you must be registered. Registering to vote is an easy process. In fact, Michigan was the first state in the nation to implement “motor/voter” registration, allowing residents to register to vote at any Secretary of State branch office. Today, over 88 percent of all eligible voters are registered.

To register, you must be a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years old by election day and a Michigan resident. Any Secretary of State branch office or county, city or township clerk’s office can register you. In addition, specified agencies providing services through the the Department of Human Services, the Department of Community Health, the Michigan Jobs Commission, and military recruitment centers also provide voter registration services.

You may also register to vote by mail—forms are available at your local clerk’s office or from the Secretary of State web site. If you register to vote by mail, and you have moved to a new voting jurisdiction or are registering for the very first time, you must vote in person in the first election in which you participate. The only exceptions are if you are 60 years old or older, disabled as defined by law or temporarily living overseas.

You also have the option of registering to vote when you renew your driver license by mail. Eligible drivers receive a voter registration application in the mail with their driver license renewal information.

As you can see, there are several options for you to choose from when registering to vote. But no matter where or how you register, you will vote in your assigned precinct in your hometown. What You Need to Know About Absentee Voting

F Download an absentee ballot application at www.michigan.gov/sos

F Send your absentee ballot request form to your clerk at: www.michigan.gov/sos

Absentee voter ballots are available for all elections. They provide voters with a convenient method for cast-ing a ballot when they are unable to attend the polls on election day.

As a registered voter, you may obtain an absentee voter ballot if you are:

F age 60 years old or olderF unable to vote without assistance at the pollsF expecting to be out of town on election day

F in jail awaiting arraignment or trialF unable to attend the polls due to religious reasons

F appointed to work as an election inspector in a precinct outside of your precinct of residence.

A person who registers to vote by mail must vote in person in the first election in which he or she participates. The restriction does not apply to overseas voters, voters who are disabled or voters who are 60 years of age or older. (Voting in person on one governmental level clears the restriction on the other levels. For example, if a voter subject to the restriction votes in person at a school election, the voter would be free to obtain an absentee ballot for the first state election in which he or she wishes to participate.)

Requesting an Absentee Voter BallotYour request for an absentee voter ballot must be in

writing and can be submitted to your city or township clerk. (For assistance in obtaining the address of your city or township clerk, see www.Michigan.gov/vote). Your request must include one of the six statutory reasons stated

LIFESPAN Candidate SurveyRight to Life - LIFESPAN, Inc. is a non-profit educational

and legislative organization. The first informs and motivates people to do something. The second speaks to changing laws. LIFESPAN can take sides and urge passage of legislation which is called lobbying. LIFESPAN is not “political.” LIFESPAN does not have a political action committee (PAC) to elect or to defeat candidates. However, we can publish candidate surveys. This has been clearly permitted on a number of occasions by the U.S. Supreme Court. We can also list office holders and tell you how they have voted on various issues. Such report-ing, as we do it, is not “political.” Because this comes under Freedom of the Press, such information can be passed out through churches, without jeopardizing their tax status (again by a decision of the U.S. Supreme Court). According to legal terminology, this corporation can engage in “issue advocacy.”

The responses to the survey questions are dependent on the honesty and integrity of the individual candidates. LIFESPAN is not responsible for any candidate’s responses that differ from his or her public stance on the issues. Any questions on discrepancies should be directed to the candidate. F

above and your signature. You must request an absentee voter ballot by mailing the application, a letter, a postcard, or a pre-printed application form obtained from your local clerk’s office. Requests to have an absentee voter ballot mailed to you must be received by your clerk no later than 2 p.m. the Saturday before the election.

Once your request is received by the local clerk, your signature on the request will be checked against your voter registration record before a ballot is issued. You must be a registered voter to receive an absentee ballot. Requests for absentee voter ballots are processed immediately. Absentee voter ballots may be issued to you at your home address or any address outside of your city or township of residence.

After receiving your absentee voter ballot, you have until 8 p.m. on election day to complete the ballot and return it to the clerk’s office. Your ballot will not be count-ed unless your signature is on the return envelope and matches your signature on file. If you received assistance voting the ballot, then the signature of the person who helped you must also be on the return envelope. Only you, a family member or person residing in your household, a mail carrier, or election official is authorized to deliver your signed absentee voter ballot to your clerk’s office.

If an emergency, such as a sudden illness or family death prevents you from reaching the polls on election day, you may request an emergency absentee voter bal-lot. Requests for an emergency ballot must be submitted after the deadline for regular absentee voter ballots has passed but before 4 p.m. on election day. The emergency must have occurred at a time which made it impossible for you to apply for a regular absentee voter ballot. Your local clerk will have more information about emergency absentee voter ballots. F

JUDICIAL CANDIDATE SURVEY LIFESPAN sent the following three-question survey to each candidate for judicial office in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb Counties, including Appeals Court, Circuit Court, District Court and Probate Court. Candidates were also asked to state, in 50 words or less, their judicial philosophy as it relates to matters of statutory interpretation. Statements provided by judicial candidates are on file at LIFESPAN’s Main Office. Please call for further information.

The following questions are intended to delve into your judicial philosophy. These questions are not directed at any particular case that you may have previously ruled upon, are about to rule upon or may rule upon in the future.

    1. Which of the following groups of United States Supreme Court Justices possess a judicial philosophy that is closest to your own? Please circle your selection. A B C D A. Justice Antonin Scalia and Justice Clarence Thomas B. Justice Anthony M. Kennedy and retired Justice Sandra Day O’Connor C. Justice David Souter and Justice John Paul Stevens D. Justice Ruth Bader Binsberg and Justice Stephen Breyer

    2. Which book most closely captures your judicial philosophy? Please circle your selection. A B C D A. A Matter of Interpretation, by Antonin Scalia B. Rights from Wrongs, by Alan Dershowitz C. Active Liberty, by Stephen Breyer D. Feminist Legal Theory: Readings in Law and Gender, edited by Katharine T. Bartlett and Roseanne Kennedy 3. Which statement most closely captures your judicial philosophy as it relates to matters of Constitutional interpretation? Please circle your selection. A B C D A. Our State and Federal Constitutions should be interpreted by ascertaining the original meaning of the words that make up these documents.

    B. Our State and Federal Constitutions should be interpreted by ascertaining the current meaning of the words that make up these documents.

    C. Our State and Federal Constitutions provide general outlines of societal goals. The interpretation of our Constitutions can change over time to reflect the changing views of society. Constitutional interpretation should not be so stringent as to preclude the flexibility needed in a changing society. D. A judge ought not commit to methods of constitutional interpretation before a case is heard. A judge should consider the arguments of the litigants and select a method of constitutional interpretation that produces a fair and equitable result in each case before the court.

    4. In 50 words or less, on the reverse side of this questionnaire, please describe your judicial philosophy as it relates to matters of statutory interpretation.

NOTE: LIFESPAN is not a political organization and does not endorse candidates for election. We have surveyed the candidates as a service to our members. The questionnaires are on file at LIFESPAN’s Main Office for your perusal. If you need further verification on a candidate’s stand on these or other issues, please contact the candidate directly.

It is not sufficient to think that, since candidate X takes the “right position” on other issues such as

the economy, foreign relations, defense, etc., but only goes wrong on abortion,

one can in good conscience, vote for him/her. Abortion deals with the first and most basic

human right, without which there is nothing left to talk about.

The Supreme Court decision on June 30 was not a dis-criminatory ruling against women, but rather a refreshing ruling in defense of religious freedom.

In spite of all the heated rhetoric from those who sup-port abortion in all its forms, the ruling does not deny any woman access to any health care, reproductive or otherwise.

If a woman wants the four types (out of 20!) that Hobby Lobby finds morally objectionable, they can still obtain it. It simply will not be a covered health care benefit.

One in three pregnan-cies end in abortioncontinued from back page

As mentioned, the idea of risk compensation is completely ignored when it comes to promoting birth control. Are such im-poverished women being taught how to use their birth control properly, in addition to being sent off to not bring any more children into such a place?

And even if birth control is used correctly, what about for those whom it fails? The Guttmacher Institute, which itself is in favor of abortion, reports that 51% of women who sought an abortion had already been on birth control. Like abortion being regarded as a “quick fix,” it seems like those seeking to improve Detroit’s abortion rates are looking to another kind of such fix, in the form of birth control.

The piece mentions that there is a “direct correlation between abortion and poverty,” according to national studies. Abortion does not improve a woman’s situation of poverty, but rather often brings upon a whole other host of problems, regardless as to what experts in this piece may say.

Pregnancy centers, however, help women with pro-viding housing, basic needs of food and clothing, and even assist women in finding a job. They enable women to keep their children as well as get out of poverty, taking away the excuse of poverty and economic hardship as a common reason to have an abortion.

The only person who is mentioned as having personal experience with abortion herself, Penelope Allen, had an abortion when she was 15. She has a daughter, Patience, who is almost 2 and is actually credited for enabling Penelope to make it with her life when she says “[m]y daughter, it was her, she helped me get my life on track.”

It would seem then that Detroit is failing not only on an economic level, but on a cultural level as well when it cannot stand to support a culture of life. How can such a city have hope when it kills off its future before they have the chance to be born? This is especially the case when the consensus seems to be to merely fix the situation with free birth control. —LifeNews.com, May 27, 2014

    Dear Friends,

August 5, 2014 is a date to put on your calendar. It is a chance for the country to begin rebuilding itself. It is time to vote and use your vote to get into office those people that most mirror your values and the values of our forefathers and mothers who oftentimes fought with their blood and sweat for human rights and freedom--for a country that was founded upon the premise that the rights of the human person is paramount.

We are entitled to the rights of LIFE, LIBERTY and the pursuit of HAPPINESS grounded on the premise that all humans have individual rights given by GOD not by the government or the leaders controlling the government.

Over 56 million babies, and counting, will never have the “RIGHT to LIFE”—we are losing our “LIBERTY” fast, especially our religious liberty—and our PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS” has been curtailed by the 1000s upon 1000s of regulations thrust upon us by the government, some of these regulations make it impossible for a group like LIFESPAN to speak freely about who is pro-life and who is not.

We, therefore, do the publication you are reading.Candidates running for office in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb Counties are sent a questionnaire. We print their responses in this newsletter. It is now up to you. It is important to vote! It is important to pass on this information to family and friends. It is a way to express your feelings and change the direction our country is presently going—especially with the attack against human life—Planned Parenthood received $540.6 million in taxpayer funding in the fiscal year 2012-2013 (that’s nearly $1.5 million per day) to kill preborn children in their clinics—IT MUST STOP.

Never underestimate the power of the voice of the people—be it with your vote or your pen. The power of the pen is also a strong way to let your values be known. We are looking to revitalize our “Committee of Correspondence.” This is another way to voice your opinion to try and change hearts and minds. Due to the fullness of this newsletter, I will describe in the next edition just what this committee is and how you can help LIFESPAN and the cause. If you have the talent to write and would love doing this, please let us know—call the Main Office, 734-524-0162, and we will discuss it further.

It is time for a change—bring our values for human life back to this country—vote August 5, let your voice be heard!!

Supreme Court rules Obama admin can’t make Hobby Lobby obey HHS Mandate

The Supreme Court ruled on June 30 that the Chris-tian-run Hobby Lobby doesn’t have to obey the HHS pro-abortion mandate which is a part of Obamacare that requires businesses to pay for abortion-causing drugs in their employee health care plans. The Obama adminis-tration was attempting to make Hobby Lobby and thou-sands of pro-life businesses and organizations comply with the HHS mandate that compels religious compa-nies to pay for birth control and abortion-causing drugs for their employees. However, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a favorable ruling in Sebelius v. Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc., a landmark case addressing the Constitutionally guaranteed rights of business owners to operate their family companies without violating their deeply held re-ligious convictions.

One in Three Pregnancies End in Abortion in DetroitBy Rebecca Downs

Detroit is the most dangerous city to be a child in the United States. And with its abortion rate, this in-cludes those unborn children in the womb as well. While the abortion rate for the United States and Michigan as a state have decreased, 31 percent of pregnancies for 2012 ended in abortion in Detroit. While experts regard this as problematic, their solutions to decreasing the rates may not be the answer.

Such shocking and tragic news was reported by The Detroit News. Included is a statement from Dr. Susan Schooley, chairwoman of the Department of Family Medicine at Henry Ford Hospital, who says that Detroit is “seeing a picture that looks more like some Third-World country than someplace in the United States.”

The reporting does contain heavy emphasis on birth control and problematic statements on abortion, from experts nonetheless. Bill Albert, the chief program officer for National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy seems to not know, or more likely, disregards the concept of risk compensation and the connection between birth control and abortion, including the slippery slope of emergency contraception and long-term birth control, as both forms can cause very early abortions:

“What has been striking has been the…conflation of contraception with abortion,” Albert said. “State and national policy makers, some of them, use these words interchangeably.”

Dr. Jay Berman, chief of gynecology at DMC Hutzel Hospital and division chief for gynecology at Wayne State University Medical School points to long-term contraceptives and ObamaCare as “[u]ltimately the (Affordable Care Act) is going to have an impact on the abortion rates.” He also claims that abortion is safe and does not lead to further complications, even with multiple abortions. Berman also regards the “stress” of pregnancy together with abortion:

Berman noted that legal abortion is a safe procedure. He said the general consensus among physicians is that abortions—even multiple abortions—do not lead to premature birth or other complications with future pregnancies.

“We certainly would like to reduce that number,” Berman said. “There’s physical stress, but there is psychological stress as well. (Unplanned pregnancy) has an effect on plans for education, for work. Women don’t take these choices very lightly. It certainly has an emotional and psychological (effect).”

Studies would go against Berman and his so-called “general consensus among physicians…” including when it comes to multiple abortions. Also curiously mentioned is that “[t]he highest number of deaths occur in the first year, most related to premature birth.” Despite what Berman may claim, such deaths could very well be a result of the high abortion rate, for those women giving birth who have had abortions previously.

And, while the piece does report such (mis)information on the safety and risks of abortion, it does include a quote from Loretta Davis, president and CEO of Detroit’s Institute for Population Health, regarding the “increasing abortion rate [as] represent[ing] a ‘public health failure.’” And Schooley, who is mentioned earlier in the piece, also refers to abortion as “…one lousy choice.”
