In kleinere kring bestond al veel waardering voor eerdere fi lms van deze documentairemaker, waarin thema’s als afscheid, weemoed en herinnering centraal staan. Appel heeft inmiddels een imposant oeuvre opgebouwd en geldt als een van de belangrijkste Nederlandse documentairemakers van dit moment.

In de selectie uit het werk van de fi lmmaker is tevens de opdrachtfi lm De As van Phoenix opgenomen, die Appel op uitnodiging van het Nederlands Instituut voor Beeld en Geluid heeft gemaakt in het kader van zijn benoeming tot eerste ‘Documentairemaker In Focus’.

Between fi lm connoisseurs there was already great recognition for the documentary-maker’s previous fi lms, which revolve around such themes as nostalgia, farewells and memories. Appel has now built up an impressive oeuvre and he is regarded as one of the major Dutch documentary-makers of today.

Het Nederlands Instituut voor Beeld en Geluid in Hilversum is het audiovi-suele archief van Nederland. Hier ligt honderd jaar geschiedenis in bewegend beeld en geluid opgeslagen. De collectie bevat meer dan 700.000 uur beelden geluidsmateriaal waaronder de archieven van de Publieke Omroep (radio vanaf 1934, televisie vanaf 1951), de Polygooncollectie (vanaf 1922), de Koninklijk Huis-collectie en documentaires van bekende cineasten zoals Bert Haanstra en Herman van der Horst. Een van de doelen van Beeld en Geluid is dat prachtige materiaal voor iedereen toegankelijk te maken. Dit doen we met vaste en tijdelijke tentoonstellingen en verschillende uitgaven. In de dvd reeks Dutch Documentary Collection brengt Beeld en Geluid de hoogtepunten uit de Nederlandse documentairetraditie opnieuw uit. Bij de speciale ‘In Focus’-uitgave staat jaarlijks een hedendaagse documentairemaker centraal. Deze maker wordt uitgenodigd om een fi lm te ma-ken die geïnspireerd is op de collecties van Beeld en Geluid. Tevens wordt het werk van de maker bijeengebracht in het archief, zodat het nog generaties lang voor iedereen toegankelijk blijft. Deze ‘In Focus’ uitgave is tot stand gekomen onder het conserverings- en digitaliseringsproject ‘Beelden voor de Toekomst’.

The Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision in Hilversum is the audio-visual archive of the Netherlands. It is the storage place for a hundred years of the history of moving images and sound. The collection comprises over 700,000 hours of audiovisual material, including the archives of the Public Broadcasting Cooperation (radio from 1934 and television from 1951), the Polygoon cinema news collection (from 1922), the Dutch Royal Family collection and documen-taries by famous fi lm-makers such as Bert Haanstra and Herman van der Horst.One of the goals of Sound and Vision is to make this wonderful material acces-sible to everybody. This we achieve through permanent and temporary exhibiti-ons, and a variety of publications. In the DVD series Dutch Documentary Collec-tion, Sound and Vision is re-releasing the highlights of the Dutch documentary tradition. Every year, the special In Focus edition focuses on one contemporary documentary-maker. This maker is invited to make a fi lm inspired by the Sound and Vision collections. The maker’s work is also brought together in the archives, so that it is accessible to everybody for generations to come. This In Focus edition has been created as part of the conservation and digitalisation project ‘Images for the Future’.
