The Volvo Ocean Race is acknowledged as the greatest test of sailing prowess and human endeavour. Exciting new changes have been made to the 2014-15 Race with a new route, a new boat design, increased media engagement and other innovations to ensure the Race builds on its proven track record over 11 editions, 40 years and countless miles of real human drama told through relentless ocean racing.

And Auckland will again play a major role in the Race. The 2015 Auckland Stopover, scheduled to run from 27 February to 15 March, will be the ninth stopover staged in the City of Sails in the 40 year history of the event.

As in 2012, the boats will race from Sanya, China to Auckland, New Zealand (5,264 nm), arriving in February 2015. From the City of Sails they set out for Itajaí in Brazil (6,776 nm) before going north to Newport, Rhode Island in the United States (5,010 nm). The Race continues across the Atlantic to Lisbon (2,800 nm) and a stop in Lorient (647 nm) before the final run to the finish around the British Isles to Gothenburg (1,600 nm).

Each Stopover features Pro-Am Races and an In- Port Race, with points from the In-Port Races counting towards a separate trophy.

In Auckland, the Pro-Am Races are scheduled for Thursday 12 and Friday 13 March with the In-Port Race scheduled for Saturday 14 March. The Start of Leg 5 will take place on Sunday 15 March.

“Sailing into Auckland after a 10-year gap felt like the race was coming home,” said Volvo Ocean Race CEO Knut Frostad after the last Auckland Stopover in 2012.

“Tens of thousands of passionate fans packed the Race Village each day, and the crowds for all the arrivals plus the In-Port Race and Leg Start were among the best we’ve ever had.”

More than 276,000 spectators visited the Race Village during the 11 days of the 2012 Auckland Stopover. Next year, 400,000 spectators are expected to visit the Auckland Stopover over 17 days, with live music, entertainment and local sailing events complementing a vibrant Race Village packed with activities.

A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO ENTERTAIN YOUR CLIENTS IN STYLE! The exclusive hospitality facility, the Members Lounge, will be located on Halsey Wharf, near the entrance to the Race Village in the Viaduct Harbour. An ideal client hospitality and business networking environment, the hospitality venue also offers panoramic views of the Waitemata Harbour and the Race Village and guests can watch the shore crews at work on the Volvo Ocean Race fleet moored in Pit Lane.

All guests will enjoy privacy, comfort and the very best of New Zealand’s food, wine and service.

There is a range of opportunities and activities for corporate guests including access to the exclusive on-land hospitality at the Members Lounge and on-water hospitality on board premium charter vessels that provide exclusive viewing of the action on Race days.

THE AUCKLAND STOPOVER
