The standards and/or recommendations applied by VolvoConstruction Equipment refer to ISO, SAE and EN stan-dards.

ISO the International Standards Organization is aninternational organization dedicated to standardization.

SAE stands for the Society of Automotive Engineers,an American organization dedicated to standardization.

EN stands for European Norm a European standardwithin the framework of the EU Machinery Directive.

Depending on the application and various materialearth densities, sizes of materials, etc. an alternativetype/capacity of attachment not indicated in this ca-

talog may be chosen after consulting with VolvoConstruction Equipment.

Genuine attachments in general

Quality

The hard and abrasive materials that constitute normalworking conditions have forced us to use high-gradesteels. Since conditions are not only severe, but also

varying, mere strength is not enough flexibility is alsorequired. Through extensive testing, we have developeda large number of buckets for materials of differentdensities that permit optimum utilization of the machinestipping load.

Maximum strength and flexibility require perfect interplaybetween attachment and wheel loader. This interplaymust begin during the development of the differentcomponents. We have matched the buckets optimally toour loaders.

The geometry of the loader unit and the shape of thebucket are intimately related. In order to calculate theoptimum bucket angle, plate thickness, bottom length,bucket width, etc., it is necessary to know the anglesand other characteristics of the lift-arm system.

The product sign plate affixed to all genuine attachmentsis the buyers guarantee the attachment has been testedand approved with respect to quality and function.

The sign plate not only marks the attachment as genuine,but it also serves as a certificate of identification.

ISO 7546 or SAE J742 heaped volume.The heap angle is 1:2 or 27.

ISO/SAE calculates with a perfect horizontal position ofthe bucket. When mounted on wheel loaders, however,the bucket tends to lean forward in carry position. Theangle also varies between competitors.

The linkage on a Volvo wheel loader allows the bucket tobe almost horizontal in carry position. When the materialhas a heap angle according to ISO/SAE, the bucket willca

Our competitors mainly use the Z-bar linkage, whichmakes the buckets lean more forward in carry position. Aheap angle of 27means that the bucket will carry muchless than the ISO/SAE rated volume.

1. Volvo wheel loaders with TP Linkage will give alarger heap than the same size competitive wheelloader in the same material.

2. Choose the bucket in accordance to the wheelloaders rated capacity and consider the materialtype, the density of the material and the actualtransported volume.

Attachment bracket

General

Different materials require different types of handling not necessarily different machines. Volvo wheel loadersare continuously being developed to provide higher

capacity within different fields of operation. Quick coup-ling of attachments permits effective utilization of thewheel loader where previously only special-purposemachines, such as fork-lift trucks and mobile cranes,could be used. The idea of interchangeable attachmentsis a unique solution that has made Volvo wheel loaders amarket leader.The attachment bracket with hydraulic locking is ruggedand easy to operate. Precision fit and quality engineeringwith large, rounded hooks make it easy to guide theattachment onto the bracket. Thanks to the efficient de-sign of the bracket, the difference in operating load bet-

ween direct-mounted (pin-on) and bracket-mounted(hook-on) attachments is minimal. As designers of boththe wheel loader and the attachment bracket, we havetaken advantage of the unique opportunity to make thebracket an integral part of the machine.

Attachment bracket in logging

It makes sense to have several log grapples if you haveto work with different timber sizes or you need to opti-mize capacity in different operations. Our attachmentbracket permits rational utilization of several grapples orswitching to a wood chip bucket.Most of our log grapples are bracket-mounted, whichprovides versatility at the same cost as pin-on mountedgrapples.Bracket-mounted grapples do not project further forwardthan pin-on grapples, and the weight difference is negli-gible. Bracket-mounted log grapples offer greater flexibi-lity than pin-on-mounted grapples.

Selecting a bucket

General

Bucket volume alone is not an adequate measure of thecapacity of the loader. The crucial factor is the ability ofthe wheel loader to fill the bucket every pass. For that

reason, the right size and the right shape of the bucket isvery important. A large bucket can result in lower pro-ductivity because it is more difficult to fill, while a smallbucket that is easier to fill can increase productivity.

A number of factors have to be taken into account, suchas the nature of the material being handled, the condi-tion of the wheel loader, the operators skill, and the

transport distance. If the transport distance is long, thismay cause spillage. Since all of these factors vary, awide selection of buckets is required in order to achievemaximum productivity. The Volvo attachment rangeoffers such a wide selection.

Spade nose rock bucket

The best choice for breaking out hardand stony material and shot rock.Recommended to be fitted with1 1/2 leg type adapters, points of AMtype and segments.For gravel, fine shot rock and ore,it can be fitted with bolt-on edgesinstead of teeth.

Log grapples

Log handling

Centuries of timber handling in Sweden have given usthe experience and knowlege to design superior loggrapples. This experience, together with our own deve-

lopment work, has produced a wide range of grapples.

Versatility is a must, since the demands of the work varywidely. They may include handling different lengths,transporting logs over uneven ground, gripping and hol-ding one log, whole stems, etc. These are the points wetake into consideration when designing our complete loggrapple range, which permits all types of timber to behandled under the most diverse conditions.Torque Parallel Linkage has advantages that no othersystem can boast. Generous reach and lifting heightpermit the work to be done quickly and safely.If the grapple has to come in from above for final stack-

ing of timber or when unloading a truck, the machinemust have sufficient breakout and back-tilting torque.If the machine is not strong enough to break out the loadfrom the top, the tines have to be forced between thelogs, increasing the risk of damage to the logs and thevehicle.

Rated operating loads for log grapples are calculatedfor a wheel loader fitted with approved counterweightsfor timber handling and tires:

875/65 R29 L4.The rated operating load capacity specified will beinfluenced if optional equipment is fitted to the attach-ment or the loader.

Selecting a log grapple

One of the fundamental principles in choosing a loggrapple for handling round wood is that the longer thetimber is, the smaller the grip area and the wider the

grapple must be. The log grapples are designed diffe-rently depending on how the machine works. Size isnormally expressed in m2/ft2.The length of the timberthen determines how much can be carried.

Log grapples

Log grapples always require a 3rdhydraulic

function.

Heel/kickout

Hydraulic heel/kickout is available for unloading andsorting grapples. The heel is used, for example, for hol-ding a single log in a large grapple. The kickout is usedto make higher stacks, since the grapples do not have tobe tilted to empty; instead, the log is pushed out, making

it possible to reach about half a meter higher.Supplied as an assembly kit. Assembly not included inthe price.

The unloading grapple has short, rounded tines, making iteasier to fill the grapple when unloading a vehicle. Long,straight tines could damage both the timber and the vehicle ifused for his purpose.

The sorting grapple has relatively long and straight tines thatcan slide along the ground, so the grapple can be easily filledwhen loading from stacks and sorting bunkers.

C

Thegeneral purpose grapple is an allround grapple forhandling and sorting tree length stems or for gripping singlestems. It has longer tines than the sorting grapple.

The tree-length grapple is a wide grapple specifically de-signed for handling tree-length stems.

Fork quality

Fork frames and pallet forks must be able to withstandthe full lifting capacity of the machine. The fork tines are

designed according to ISO 2330, and they are made ofhigh grade, hardened and tempered steel, which meetthese demands with excess margin.

It is the manufacturer's responsibility to furnish data andinformation on attachments together with the loaders.We carry out inspections and classifications accordingto current standards.

All Volvo pallet fork tines are marked with:1 Max. load per tine in kg

2 Spacing for max. load in mm

Fork attachments

Fork attachments for varying needs

Due to their special features, flexibility, manoeuverabilityand unique lift-arm system, Volvo wheel loaders are usedin many different types of applications. The attachment

bracket permits the machine to be utilized effectivelywhere previously only special purpose machines such asfork-lift trucks and mobile cranes could operate. Thestability of Volvo wheel loaders and the reach and paral-lel lift-arm action of the loader unit make them particularlysuitable for work with fork attachments.

In material handling yards, warehouses and harbors,maximum use is made of the available space. Here theVolvo wheel loader's lift-arm system and efficient attach-ments are a necessity. Their high lift height and longreach permit work with high stacks. They can also loadwide vehicles from one side, permitting short work cy-

cles.

Fork tine wear (Acc. to ISO 5057)

The fork tine shall be thoroughly checked for wear,special attention being paid to the vicinity of the heel.

If the thickness of the tine is reduced to 90% of theoriginal thickness, or to the minimum thickness specifiedby the fork tine or equipment manufacturer, the fork tineshall be withdrawn from service.

The rated operating load capacity is determinedaccording to the European Standard EN 4743.For countries outside the European Common Market,

other safety requirements might apply, so the usershould always check local regulations.The determined operating load for Volvo wheel loaders,with respect to attachment load center distance, isspecified in the table below.
