Campaign a Success!

The 2011-12 GIVE Campaign was a great success for our school and children!More than 600 parents, grandparents, alumni, staff, and friends gave generously to DWS – in fact, 380 donors increased their gifts over the previous year!THANK YOU FOR THIS TREMENDOUS VOTE OF CONFIDENCE IN OUR SCHOOL!

The success of this campaign is due to the work of countless volunteers calling, e-mailing, and writing fellow parents about the importance of supporting Deerfield-Windsor, so our children can continue to receive an exceptional education in a caring, safe environment, where character counts and personal responsibility is promoted.

It is a privilege to thank these wonderful individuals, and to provide special recognitionto those who went above and beyond to push past our $190,000 goal to reach$206,500 in total monetary donations plus another $22,500 in gifts-in-kind.

Dear Friends,

This report sums up the impressiveyear experienced by our school in2011-12, and it is our attempt to properly recognize all those thatstepped forward through the DWSAnnual Fund and GOAL programs to underwrite that success. I am humbled by your generosity and dedication in helping Deerfield-Windsor prepare our students to excelin an ever changing world.

As Board Chair it is my privilege toserve with a remarkable group ofTrustees committed to honoring andmanaging your resources for thebetterment of the school and its students. We sit in the unique position of looking at the school

from a “30,000 foot” vantage point – meaning that our function is not the day-to-day business of running the school, but rather to ensure the long-term viability andrelevance of Deerfield-Windsor for current and future Southwest Georgia families.

In this capacity, we set long range goals and work to establish the framework fortheir accomplishment, while recognizing that there will be adjustments along theway to meet the unexpected. It is an interesting task and is summed up in a slightlyhumorous way by cultural anthropologist Margaret Mead, “We are now at a pointwhere we must educate our children in what no one knew yesterday, and prepareour schools for what no one knows yet.”

Deerfield-Windsor is a great school because the board members who preceded me,and the parents, grandparents, alumni, and staff of the last 48 years have workedtogether to make it great. We will strive to continue their legacy – to put the interests of the children ahead of our own, to put aside minor differences to supportthe big picture. And although we may be three divisions on two campuses – we areone Deerfield-Windsor.

Thank you for choosing DWS for your children and grandchildren. Thank you for sharing your talents and resources with our school. Thank you for making theeducation, character, and safety of our students a priority in your lives.

Sincerely,

Mark LaneChairman, DWS Board of Trustees

Dear Friends,

As Deerfield-Windsor nears the half century mark, we can be proud of the strengthof this School and its bright future.

Each year we send out a “Recent Alumni Survey.” This questionnaire, sent to graduates who have completed their first year of college, enables us to learn howprepared they were for college. The overall results are always positive, but I amgratified at how accurately our young alumni assess our strengths and weaknesses. They are generous with their praise and kind but direct in their suggestions forimprovement. I want to share a note submitted by a 2011 DWS alum in responseto this survey:

Every teacher at Deerfield-Windsor is amazing. I was so very, very blessed to have been taught by each and every one of them. They are definitely top notch teachers. I neverhad any trouble going to a single teacher with an issue or concern. They were all very fair and I enjoyed getting to know each of them.

This type of feedback is so rewarding, and so motivating for us to want to workthat much harder in preparing current students for that exciting next step.

As you will see in the pages that follow, 2011-2012 was an exemplary year at DWS:

I Our Class of 2012 made us very proud with their college acceptances with nearly half accepted to at least one of the 200 most selective U.S. colleges. They also amassed $2.5 million in merit-based scholarships.

I Our athletic program was recognized as State runner-up in the GISA Class AAA All-Sports competition, out of 28 schools – an impressive accomplishment.

I Students and faculty enjoyed the renovated Lower and Middle/Upper School buildings, additional Promethean boards, reconstructed track, and new bleachers in Webb Memorial Stadium.

I Our visual and performing arts students, speech contestants, and literary competitors won numerous awards and brought credit to the School.

I Total annual support – a combination of Annual Fund, GOAL Scholarship dollars, PTO contributions, and Booster Club support – exceeded $1.2 million! We are extremely grateful to the entire DWS community for its outstanding generosity and huge vote of confidence.

I 2012-2013 is the third and final year of our strategic plan “Continuing Excellence: Toward Fifty and Beyond.” Our Chair, Dunia Edwards, shares the ongoing success of this effort in the body of this report.

I We have a newly reorganized and energized Athletic Booster Club and Parent Association (formerly PTO) under excellent leadership.

I DWS turns 50 in 2014! To make sure we properly celebrate and commemorate this wonderful anniversary, we will be convening an anniversary committee this school year. We welcome your ideas for a great celebration.

As we look forward to the many years ahead, it is our intention to position DWS as an even more dynamic, significant force inAlbany and the Southeast independent school world - with your continued support, engagement, and goodwill.

Sincerely,

Dave Davies, Headmaster

The last week of May, five members of the DWS Science Department (Jo Joiner, Connie McGee, Alyx Hall, Morris Rainey and BillSpangler) made their way to Yellowstone National Park to spend three incredible days studying the biology, chemistry, physics, geology, history and ecology of this vast natural wonderland. Yellowstone is 2.2 million acres and contains 50% of the natural geothermal activityon the planet, including two thirds of all the geysers that still erupt. These natural geothermal features present a wide range of ecologicalzones, chemical differences and physical pressure phenomena. These were all studied in great detail and the lessons we learned will beused at Deerfield-Windsor to enhance the learning environment of our science classrooms.

We arranged to stay in cabins right on the edge of the Park on the Montana/Wyoming border, as guests of the Yellowstone Association, theeducational arm of the Yellowstone network. Our cabin was at the top of a mountain ridge, where we could watch wildlife passing by as we ateour breakfast (or lunch, or dinner…but you get my point). The Association’s classes were spectacular and included transportation and the servicesof a trained and experienced guide who led us through all areas of the park. Our guide who had 15 years of experience in the park, was extremely

knowledgeable about the history, science, and recent events. We could not contain our excitement and our guide paid back our uber-nerdy enthusiasm with three days ofexemplary explanations and sightings.

All the Science Department teachers learned a tremendous amount, not only about theirown discipline, but also about how our varied scientific disciplines dovetail into one another.Biology, chemistry, and physics all overlapped into a cohesive whole that the teachers can nowbring into the classroom. We learned about the multitude of organisms that live in the park andhow they survive and thrive, the effects of pressure on the physics of the geysers, the effects ofchemistry on the environment, both natural and manmade (did you know throwing pennies inthe geysers is a SERIOUS no-no, not only because it’s littering, but also because the copper inthe pennies will throw off the chemical and biological balance of everything in the vicinity?).

Yellowstone is a Science teacher’s dream (not to mention, it’s incredibly gorgeous, that wascertainly a plus, too). The park ranges tremendously in altitude, with an average of 8,000 feetabove sea level. That means the ecosystems of Yellowstone are incredibly varied - from foreststo lakes to rivers to mountain ranges - and of course, most of it is in a huge caldera of a super-volano! That’s right, Yellowstone really is the largest supervolcano on the continent; it haserupted several times in the past two million years and is considered active, so it could go offagain. Fortunately, it did not erupt while we were there, but it was really super cool seeing theevidence of its past activity.

And, of course, there was the wildlife. We saw tons (literally!—each one weighs severalhundred pounds) of buffalo, to the point where we stopped noticing when we saw one amblingup to someone’s front yard, which they do fairly often. Our guide was also able to show us elk, wolves (one ran right past our bus!), bighorn sheep (a couple of those wandered past our backdoor one evening), an owl’s nest with owlets, an eagle’s nest with eaglets, black bears (did you know black bears are like Labrador retrievers and can be black, or brown, or cinnamon colored?), a grizzly bear (unfortunately in the far distance—although none of my family is nearly as disappointed by this as I am), pronghorn, ravens…the list goes on and on.

At the end of each day, we would sit and talk about what we had seen and learned and how we were going to share this with our students. We are all so excited to have gotten toshare this magnificent experience, and we cannot wait to pass on what we have learned toour students.

LOWER SCHOOL CURRICULUM ADVISORS

In an effort to assess and strengthen our curriculum at the Lower School, three of our teachers have been tapped to serve as Curriculum Advisors in thefundamental areas of reading, math, and writing. These advisors will workwith their colleagues on curriculum mapping and development and will beresources for and report directly to the Lower School Director.

Curriculum mapping is a process for recording what content and skills areactually taught in a classroom, school, or district over a period of time.Mapping results in a good overall view of the curriculum, both vertically(grade-to-grade, K4-5th) and horizontally (all subjects within a grade level).

The goals for these advisors include:I Ensuring curricular continuity for K4-5th gradeI Assessing current and potential future curricula and making

recommendations to the Lower School DirectorI Working with colleagues to implement curricula

Our Curriculum Advisors are: Mrs. Shay Bradshaw – math, Mrs. HaleyMcLendon – reading, and Mrs. Karen Stiller – writing.

We are excited about the addition of these positions to our program and lookforward to the positive changes that should result. Other subject mappingmay well follow in the years to come as we strive to continually assess andimprove our curriculum.

One of the lovely things about being an independent school is the flexibilitythat we have when it comes to inviting special guests to campus. As long asthe budget allows, our teachers have the freedom to request speakers andother visitors to come and address their classes whenever the topic is considered relevant to the curriculum or of special interest to the students.

During the 2011-2012 school year, for instance, our K5-2nd grade students were invited to hear author Fiona Page share her writing in ourMedia Center. Ms. Page, who lost her sight a few years ago, wrote a bookcalled Bettina the Bold about a blind butterfly who learned how to cope with her differences. The experience was a valuable one for our youngstudents, validating that it is important to respect those with handicaps ordifferences. The message of Bettina was also that having a handicap is noexcuse for being unhappy or unpleasant, and that a good attitude canmake any situation positive.

Another enjoyable program that we hosted at the Lower School last yearwas that of Slim Goodbody. The character of Slim, who has been aroundsince the 1970’s, came to our school in his latest incarnation, complete withmedia show and boundless energy to wow our students with informationabout the human body. Mrs. Amy Dent, 4th grade science teacher, wasresponsible for booking Slim since her students do an in depth study ofthe body’s systems. Mrs. Dent credits her early exposure to SlimGoodbody for turning her on to science when she was young, and shewanted to pass the enthusiasm along to her students. Fortunately for ourchildren, students in grades 1-5 were all invited to the program since itrelated to our overall health and science curricula. Who knows how manyfuture science teachers were inspired that day?!

Our 3rd-5th graders enjoyed a program from representatives of the KingArthur Flour Company out of Vermont. Our friends at Westwood Schoolin Camilla, actually arranged this visit from King Arthur and invited us to participate. We were delighted to take them up on this rare opportunity, as representatives from the company had never ventured this far south withtheir baking education program. In the Life Skills Bread Baking Program, a representative from King Arthur actually demonstrated the steps necessary for making bread from scratch. Older students were chosen toparticipate in the demonstration. Each child in grades 3-5 was given all ofthe ingredients necessary to bake two loaves of bread – one to keep andone to share with someone less fortunate. The baking was optional, but ourparticipation was amazing! We collected 140 loaves of homemade bread todistribute to organizations in our community that feed the hungry. What adelightful opportunity this was to co-op with a sister school, to learn a funnew skill, and to put our mission statement into action!

We are grateful to all who support Deerfield-Windsor financially, allowingus to make these kinds of special experiences available to our students!

12 DEERF IELD -WINDSOR SCHOOL

NEW BEGINNINGS IN THE MIDDLE SCHOOL

Each year a new class makes its way onto the middle-upper school campus, and this August was no different. In reality, however, the classof 2019 – that’s right 2019 – is stepping into a middle school that ischanging quite a bit and in many ways leading the entire school in apositive direction.

Having fully integrated a distinct middle-school schedule, Spanish program, and Dean of Students over the past two years, the middleschool certainly has not been quiet, but as those changes have becomecustom, new innovations are coming to fruition. Here are just some ofthe highlights:

A change in leadership – Kyle Belcher, class of 2004, has returned toDeerfield-Windsor, a second time.  After spending a year and half withus from 2010-2011 in the history department and earning his master’sdegree in Educational Leadership, Kyle held a position at FirstPresbyterian Day School in Macon during the 2011-2012 school year. With Ty Kinslow’s departure, Kyle returns filling the role of middle-school Dean of Students.  He is excited to be working with middleschool students in their development and preparation for high school.

A change in what we teach – The inclusion of Spanish brought the totalof middle-school academic classes to six, and to help ease the transitionfrom lower to middle school a new course has been developed for oursixth graders. Tammie Bumgardner’s Extended Learning Time is a studyin interdisciplinary learning. Utilizing the content from other coursesand middle-school experiences like field trips, Tammie teaches the traditional skills of writing, reading comprehension, and critical thinking, but without adding to the students out-of-class workload. Project-basedlearning, formative assessments, and in-class presentations are at the coreof this new and exciting course.

A change in how we teach – Technology has opened up many new anddifferent avenues to teaching, and Morris Rainey and Jessica Marshall are taking full advantage. Instead of needing an incredibly costly andseparate Language Lab, Jessica Marshall has begun to utilize a lingt-language.com – an on-line “language lab” that our students can accessthrough the middle-school laptop cart. Through the use of this virtuallyfree service, our Spanish students have the ability to practice listeningand speaking skills that were once thought to be the prevue of facilitiesthat cost thousands. Morris Rainey is “flipping” for his new teachingstyle. Flipping classroom instruction is a new approach that utilizesweb-based video instruction at home and in-class practice on problemsand what used to be homework. The concept is simple: students canview a lecture from anywhere, but providing feedback while studentswork, is near impossible with a traditional model. This process flipsthose two time periods. The results reported by teachers throughout thecountry is overwhelmingly positive.

As you can tell, things are pretty exciting in the Deerfield-Windsor middle school, and with all of the innovative and creative things goingon, it is easy to see why.

22 DEERF IELD -WINDSOR SCHOOL

As the final minutes began ticking down, seventy-one anxious DeerfieldWindsor School seniors anxiously waited in the Henry Gym to celebrate whatcould be their last time together as they prepared to leave the place wherethey grew more as a family than a class. Some shared warm hugs and someshared playful chest bumps, while others gave their best high-five or wipedaway bittersweet tears. Although the scene is repeated from year to year atDWS, the emotions and personalities constantly change. For these students, the Class of 2012, their bond seemed a bit stronger. Connected by statechampionships and literary excellence, joined by academic prowess and collegiate acceptance letters, and united by both childhood and recent friendships, the members of this graduation group solidified their chapter inthe Deerfield Windsor School history.

The graduation march resounded through W.T. Henry Gym as they madetheir entrance, led by Valedictorian Chris Michas and Salutatorian Emily Graf.Heads held high, tassels swaying with their swagger, the Class of 2012 werewelcomed by a standing room only crowd filled with family, friends, students, and loyal alumni. Before diplomas were awarded, Chris Michas expounded onhis desire to rely on improvisation to achieve success in life and Emily Grafexplained that her path to success had already begun in the hallowed halls ofher school. In DWS tradition, coveted awards, voted on by faculty and staff, were presented to three well deserving students: Amber Young received theRussell Grace Award for Service, Candace Cosby received the Graham P.Lowe Award for leadership in both school and academics, and Parks Pace was honored as the W. T. Henry Knight of Valor based on his integrity andcharacter. It seemed too quickly that Headmaster Dave Davies and Board ofTrustees Chair Mark Lane presented diplomas to the group, declaring thatthey were all now not only a part of the growing DWS Alumni, but also wellon their way into the “real world.” Encouraged by faulty speaker, Dr. Travis J.Campbell, who cheered their accomplishments and challenged their future, the 71 departed. Some beamed broad smiles and some walked arm in arm, while others shared a piggy-back ride and clasped hands and hearts.

Today, there were few tears. Today, there were few worries. Today, the Classof 2012 had just stepped into the future armed with an excellent education, awealth of knowledge, a treasure trove of friendships, and the approval of thosewho were blessed by their presence and their contributions to DeerfieldWindsor. And today, the Class of 2012 left an indelible mark on the DWScommunity that will likely remain when their children become part of thehome they helped create.

Special NoteFORMER KNIGHT

Dear Mr. Davies,

I just want to start out with a general “thank you.” When I walked

the halls of Deerfield-Windsor I had no clue exactly what the words

“college preparatory” meant. Sure, I was going to a good high

school learning all of the things that I would need to know to get

into a good college, but I had no real understanding of just exactly

how blessed I was to be going to Deerfield.

Here’s my first indication that I would excel in college:

The first assignment that I had in my English 1101 class was to write

about why we were in college. I wrote about the expectations of

Deerfield and of my family. My teacher wrote three comments on my

paper, first, he wanted to know if it was ok for him to abbreviate my

name, second, he said that it sounded as if dance was my true pas-

sion, and last but most certainly not least, he underlined the words

“Deerfield-Windsor” and wrote beside it “good school.” My teacher

is a grad student from Virginia, but somehow he has heard about

Deerfield-Windsor and the reputation that its students have.

….I would like to address the students of Deerfield.

Between my freshman and sophomore years of high school I tried to transfer (schools)…I so desperately

wanted to leave Deerfield. However, I stuck it out and for the next three years struggled and fought my

way through Deerfield-Windsor. I hated all the busy work that the teachers made me do and the long and

boring lectures on things that didn’t really matter to me… I wanted nothing more than to graduate and be

done with that place…But here I am, having finished the first semester of my freshman year of college and

all I think about is how great that place was to me.

I was accepted to every college that I applied to…two of the colleges I was accepted to, I would have easily

gotten into the honors program. While at Deerfield…I was just an average student. Now, though, I am

excelling in every single one of my classes…. I realize now that all the sweat and tears I shed while in high

school were SO worth it! So, even when the going gets rough and you are so ready to be finished and move

on, don’t quit Deerfield. You are receiving one of the best educations. All the research papers that you

write, all the chemistry equations that you balance, and all the foreign language vocab words you learn will

be so worth it when you get to college. Thank God every day that someone loved you so much to send you

to Deerfield. It truly is a fine institution. You’ll see what I mean when you get to college, but right now,

apply yourself and work hard, you owe your parents, teachers, and even yourself that much.

I really wish that I could address each and every teacher at Deerfield and tell each one how special they are

to me. I cannot even begin to express how grateful I am to my parents for sending me to such a fine institu-

tion, and to Deerfield for providing me the best education possible. Thank you to the moon and back!

Sincerely, Laura Elizabeth Martin

InterviewPA & BOOSTER

Over the summer we sat down with Joy Pilcher,President of the 2012-13 Parents Association(PA), and Christy Wright, President of the

2012-13 Booster Club, to learn more about theseexceptional DWS parents, the organizations

under their leadership, and their commitment tovolunteerism at the school.

Why do you volunteer at the School? Why have you beeninvolved in this way?

Joy – I’ve always liked being involved – whatever phase my life isin, whether in church or at the School. With 3 busy kids I foundmyself here anyway. I love volunteer work and love helping out the School.

Christy – I find that I like to volunteer, I like to help. I like toknow what’s going on in the school. I want to know how it works.Plus, I like being involved. It helps me keep track of my son’s world.

Joy – That’s with any situation. The more you put into it themore you get out of it. It you drop a kid off every day at 8:00 andpick him up at 3:00 what are you going to get out of it, if that’s theextent of your involvement? You’re going to get out of anything, what you put into it.

What is it that you hope to accomplish this year? Christy – In Booster Club I hope to accomplish organization – to

get it organized, so that other people know what Booster Club is,what it does for the sports and the School, so they’re not scared to beinvolved with it. A lot of people think that when you ask if theywant to do something for Booster, they say “Oh, no, that’s just toomuch work – I don’t want to do it.” But we’ve narrowed it down. We’ve organized it to where it’s not as big of a job as people think itis. I want people to feel comfortable coming in, volunteering, not mind being a committee chair or vice-president or president of Booster Club - because it’s not as demanding as it used to be or as intimidating.

Joy – It’s very similar for the PA. I want there to be a fiscalaccountability, so that the parents know how we make our money andwhat we do with our money. Also, for the parents and the faculty as a whole to know this is what PA does. We want to change it upsomewhat this year and make the Auction more user friendly, so, asChristie says, it’s not the “beast” - so that people don’t shun you whenyou mention the “Auction” word. Also, for there to be more gradelevel representation so that we know for example what the sources ofstress are for a 4th grader or for a 4th grade teacher. We are alsostriving for continuity from year to year so that you are not recreatingthe wheel, but that there be strong leadership year after year.

What would you say to a parent who wants to get more involved? Joy – We want you. We want you at any level of involvement

that you want to be involved at. There’s something here for everyone, whether it’s an one hour commitment or a nine month commitment. Everyone has different gifts, and there are differentopportunities for you. As I said earlier, the more you put into any situation, the more you’re going to get out of it.

Do you have to come to a Parent Association meeting to be a partof the PA?

Joy – No. Obviously everyone can’t be at every meeting, myselfincluded, but we would like for every parent to feel welcome. TheParent Association meetings are not closed meetings. We would lovemore involvement.

Christy – I agree. I just think people need to know how they canvolunteer through the Booster Club, and that it’s not a scary thing.Like Joy said, whether it’s one hour, a day, a year – whatever – theyneed to feel comfortable in doing it and know that they’re welcome.

Where can parents find out about what the DWS Booster Club andParents Association? Where can parents find contact informationand upcoming activities?

Joy – We will broadcast through the website contact informationfor me and Christie as presidents and for each of the people serving inleadership roles for our organizations. We have also taken it a stepfurther and this year have prepared gifts – goody bags if you will –that we have given to each of the new families. It has a little cardinside that gives my name and that of the PA’s New Parent Coordinator. It basically says here’s a name, email address, a phone number – if youhave any questions or if we can be of any help to you as a new parent ornew resident of southwest Georgia, please contact us.

What role does the Booster Club play and how does it help each ofthe different sports?

Christy –That’s one of the things we’re changing this year, because you don’t always see where Booster Club helps. We have arepresentative from each sport that sits on the Booster Club board. We have a president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, and then rep-

Page 27: Volunteers Make DWS - Deerfield-Windsor · 2016. 1. 5. · Volunteers Make DWS Campaign a Success! The 2011-12 GIVE Campaign was a great success for our school and children! More

resentatives from each sport. These reps help organize concessionvolunteers and talk with the coaches – see what their needs are.Different sports have different needs, but we’re hoping to be ableto allocate and fulfill everyone’s requests that come in – up to acertain amount. So that’s where we are trying to get everyone tosee how Booster Club is helping each sport.

Any final comments about what you’ve gained from being anactive volunteer at the school?

Joy – Just like Christy said, I love being involved for multiplereasons. Number one I like to know what’s going on, whetheryou’re on the Administrative Board or heavily involved with theParents Association or Booster Club, you know more about what’sgoing on within the school and therefore within your child’s life.I’ve also met a lot people this way, and it’s just an easy way to giveback. Writing a tuition check is the minimum. That doesn’t coverour children’s needs. There’s something out there for everyonehere – we want your involvement, but we also want to be therefor you – it’s a give and take.

Christy – I agree. I just say you’re investing in your child’s life – it’s going to last a lifetime you hope. They are memoriesyou keep for a lifetime. I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.

2011-2012 ANNUAL REPORT 27

The DWS Parent TeacherOrganization (PTO) Renamed

the DWS Parents Association (PA)The PTO has put forth a new mission statement and

adjusted its name to better reflect its role at Deerfield-Windsor.

We asked Joy Pilcher about both of these points:

What is the formal mission statement for the renamed DWS Parents Association?

The Deerfield-Windsor Parents Association provides parentswith opportunities to support the School through volunteeractivities, fundraising events, and enhanced communication

between parents, teachers, and administration.

What prompted the DWS Parent Teacher Association(PTO) to change its name to the DWS Parents

Association (PA)?  Why is the new name a better fit? This mission statement summarizes the goal of the Parents

Association to support both our school and the familiesinvolved. The Parent Association serves as the ears and eyesfor the school as it enhances communication between parents

and teachers and administration. On a philosophical note,“Parent Associations” are more traditional than “Parent

Teacher Organizations” in independent schools as there isno direct involvement or input from teachers. The namechange was prompted in order to better describe both our

mission statement and organizational structure.

34 DEERF IELD -WINDSOR SCHOOL

Dear Members of the Deerfield-Windsor Community,

Year two of the Strategic Plan implementation has come to a close and I am pleased to report that nearly two thirds of our goals havebeen accomplished and we are well on our way to fulfill the remaining objectives!

The following is a snapshot of what has been achieved as we begin the 2012-13 school year:

1. Ensuring Future Excellence – Developing a robust endowment a. A feasibility study was conducted to evaluate the interest of our DWS community in future school projects, including

a teacher endowment fund, and a capital campaign to support those endeavors. b. The DWS Alumni Association has been established with strong alumni support and leadership. Several activities have

taken place and two alumni awards initiated.c. Opportunities for grandparents to provide support were implemented through the GOAL Scholarship Program and

increased communication regarding the Annual Fund.

2. Facilities of Excellence – Providing campus improvements/enhancementsa. Two physical plant projects were endorsed by feasibility study participants – building a Fitness/Health Center on the

Nottingham campus and purchasing land for the possible relocation of athletic fields/facilities.b. The Board approved a capital campaign to fund these items as well as a teacher endowment (see below), and we are in

the early stages of this effort.

3. Classrooms of Excellence – Pursuing high quality in teachinga. Feasibility study participants endorsed the creation of an endowment to fund teacher professional development. b. The school is nearly complete in its installation of classroom Promethean Boards. c. Teachers have participated in technology training and a new lower school technology curriculum has been implemented.

4. A New Era of Excellence – Supporting the Transition of the Headmaster into DWS and Albanya. The Headmaster continues to be involved in numerous academic and professional organizations and was selected to

the GISA Board of Trustees and Appeals Committee. He regularly attends GISA headmaster conferences and GISA, SAIS, and NAIS meetings.

b. Mr. Davies is present at many school events – athletic contests, performances, plays, concerts, and meetings.c. He is also active in community programs and organizations including the Dougherty County Rotary Club, Chamber

of Commerce, and the Vestry and Rector Search Committee at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.

5. Excellence at the Next Level – Strengthening our college preparatory focusa. Nearly 40% of the 2012 graduating class was accepted by at least one of the top 200 universities in the nation.b. The Class of 2012 applied to over 100 colleges and universities.c. Our college counselor continues to expand the means for informing students and parents about the college selection

and admission process through programs such as the Senior College Boot Camp held at the start of the school year.d. DWS has recently formed a partnership with Albany State University to benefit our students by allowing them to

earn college credit in approved classes. Authorized DWS teachers are – in effect – adjunct ASU professors. Students enrolled in this program and taking designated DWS AP courses will earn credit hours independent of their AP exam performance. We have confirmed that these earned hours will be transferable to numerous public and private universities.

I continue to be very appreciative and impressed with the commitment shown by each and every volunteer involved in this process.None of these goals could be attained without their help and enthusiasm! Deerfield-Windsor School is right on track for ContinuingExcellence: Toward Fifty and Beyond!
