VOLUNTRY EVENTS

Qatar Red Crescent (QRC) has con-cluded its celebra-tions of the World Red Cross Red

Crescent Day, held over 10 days under the theme of “Our Principles in Action,” in tandem with 188 other National Societies around the world, which commemorate this day every year in May, under the umbrella of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

Over the week, 30 QRC volun-teers implemented a programme of charitable and voluntary events for individuals, families, visitors of public places and parks, and schoolchildren. Several government and nongovernment institutions took part in these events, includ-ing Community Policing and Traffic Police from the Ministry of Interior, Management of Awareness and

Environmental Education from the Ministry of Environment, General Cleanness Department from the Ministry of Municipality (Baladiya), Al Quds Model Independent School for Boys, and Al Maiz Restaurant.

Among the activities done by QRC volunteers were planting trees in the Al Quds School with partici-pation from the students, cleaning part of the Sheraton Park, Montaza Park, Souq Al Asiri, Souq Waqif Park and Baraht Al Jufairi, launch-ing awareness campaigns on road cleanliness and general awareness in cooperation with traffic officers, and recruiting volunteers and advis-ing drivers at Landmark Mall. More than 2,000 drivers, workers, stu-dents, women, and children were served by these activities.

Najat Al Haidous, QRC Head of Volunteers, said: “This great work by volunteers is intended to influence society members and improve their behaviour, cherish

our traditions when dealing with the environment and public places, urge not spitting or throwing waste anywhere, emphasize the impor-tance of keeping parks intact, and educating drivers about driving rules and traffic safety instructions.”

Al Haidous said that this is just the first step that will be followed by other steps by volunteers, who showed willingness to continue this campaign throughout the year and whenever is necessary, under QRC’s sustainable approach to its social and awareness programmes.

In a joint statement issued by Tadateru Konoé, President of IFRC, and Peter Maurer, President of ICRC, for all components of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, they said: “Formally adopted 50 years ago, the Fundamental Principles — Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary Service, Unity, and Universality — serve

as the basis of our decisions and actions now and in the future.

“In Syria, Yemen, Central African Republic, Myanmar, and South Sudan, dozens of Red Cross and Red Crescent volunteers have been killed or injured in the past 12 months. Aid workers battling Ebola in Guinea have been subjected to an average of 10 attacks every month. Health facilities in Syria and Yemen are being directly targeted and aid convoys are coming under threat, despite being clearly marked with the red cross or red crescent protective emblems.

“So now, more than ever, we urge all state and non-state parties to uphold the shared humanitarian values enshrined in the Red Cross Red Crescent’s principles. This is necessary to build the trust and acceptance of communities and continue to deliver life-saving sup-port to the most vulnerable.

Disney on Ice cast, crew arrive in town

The stars of Disney On Ice presents Princesses and Heroes arrived in town this week as preparations begin for the ice extravaganza fea-

turing Disney’s Frozen at the Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC) from May 27 – 30.

While the cast have been exploring the city, ice engineers at the QNCC have been busy setting the ice and the purpose-built 4000-seat arena. Using two 64,000 kilogramme refrigeration units to freeze the water, a magi-cal arena has been created that will take fami-lies and friends on an unforgettable journey.

This is the first visit to Qatar for many of the 60 cast and crew members of the mesmer-izing show, which marks the debut of Frozen, Disney’s Academy Award winning and number one animated feature film of all time, in Doha.

Performance Director, Rebecca Andison, said: “The cast, crew and staff are very excited to be performing shows in the Middle East and to be sharing some Disney magic with the region! Disney On Ice presents Princesses & Heroes is a beautiful show with elaborate costumes and world-class skaters from all over the globe.”

She also added: “We look forward to expe-riencing the culture and food, and exploring the cities and surrounding areas we’re in. This will be the first time many in our group have been here and we are excited to see the incredible architecture, arts, museums and desert landscapes that Doha has to offer.”

Told through artistic skating and acrobatics, dreamers will witness the magic of wishes coming true for eight Disney Princesses; Ariel, Belle, Cinderella, Rapunzel, Tiana, Jasmine, Aurora and Snow White. The second act will feature royal sisters, Anna and Elsa from Disney’s Frozen.

This collection of celebrated tales is pro-duced by Feld Entertainment, brought to Doha by the Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA) and its Events Diary OnQatar and organised by Sport & Entertainment Solutions (SES) in association with its venue partner the QNCC.

“We are thrilled to welcome Disney’s favour-ite Princesses and Heroes and the show’s incredible crew,” said Ali Haidary, the Founder and CEO of Sport & Entertainment Solutions (SES). “We can all now look forward to a fun and Frozen-filled couple of weeks in the final lead up to the show.”

“A production of this scale and magni-tude takes a long time to pull together, but it is always worth it when we see the look of delight on not just the children’s faces – but the parents’ too - as we bring classic and new stories together in a stunning ice display.”

Tickets start from QR150 and are avail-able from all Virgin Megastores and online www.virginmegastore.qa. The event organiser has added an ‘After School Special’ show on Thursday, May 28 at 3.30pm. A 25 per cent discount applies on all bronze, silver and gold tickets for this show only. The Peninsula

Following a landmark design collaboration with Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar (VCUQatar) earlier this

spring, Marsa Malaz Kempinski has unveiled the winning designer of the Lady in Red’s wardrobe and 6-month internship; Marwa Al Said, a fourth year VCUQatar student.

The hotel tasked budding local designers to create a wardrobe for their iconic Lady in Red, who is the First Lady of the hotel complementing the prestig-ious concierge role.

The brief asked for a collection reflecting the unique concept of her role that is synonymous with the five-star hotel’s trademark of personalised luxury; ensuring guests feel welcomed, comfortable and cared for, with no task or request too much to fulfil.

Marwa’s design process started with mood boards outlining silhouettes, cuts, materials and colours, along with choosing an era of style for inspiration. This led to the creation of 56 sketches that were narrowed down by a judging panel from Kempinski.

For the final 18 sketches, Marwa drew full designs and the judging panel then selected 12 final designs. Her win-ning sketches reflect the Lady in Red’s elegant persona and signature red clothing; stylish, chic and comfortable, flexible yet durable.

Marwa Al Said, winning Qatari designer, said: “This has been such an amazing journey! To have my designs chosen for the iconic Kempinski Lady in Red is an honour. My goal was to dress her in an elegant, luxurious and feminine cut, that’s practical yet allows her to feel comfortable and beauti-ful. I took inspiration from the 1950’s and 60’s, using soft materials such as crepe, linen, chiffon and cotton. It’s

truly an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn from such a prestigious brand as Kempinski through this internship so early on in my career.”

Wissam Suleiman, General Manager, Marsa Malaz Kempinski, The Pearl – Doha, said: “This is an exciting and important collaboration as we look to nurture and support home-grown designers and artisans. We saw amaz-ing and imaginative designs from local students who managed to encapsu-late the essence of the Lady in Red perfectly. Marwa’s designs captivated us though and were very much in line with the Kempinski heritage; timeless, fun, stylish and comfortable. We are honoured to welcome her to our team and to have worked with such inspiring talents at VCUQatar.” The Peninsula

TECHNOLOGY

BY SAMUEL GIBBS

Sony’s Xperia Z4 Tablet is the Japanese firm’s best yet, with small bezels, a bright screen and a waterproof body – but it’s when you add a full keyboard that things start to get interesting.

Sony has a solid heritage in tablets with two excel-lent entries into the Z series before now. While they have failed to sell particularly well, they have been some of the best Android tablets available. In fact, they have only been let down by the poor amount of tablet-optimised software for Android. That app gap between Android tablets and Apple’s iPad no longer exists.

This review is based on a near-final pre-production sample of the Xperia Z4 Tablet – some aspects could change, although this is highly unlikely.

Thinnest and lightest 10in tabletThe Xperia Z4 Tablet will be familiar to anyone who

has laid eyes on a Sony smartphone or tablet made in the last couple of years: a thin, waterproof body, black bezels and a brilliant LCD screen.

The big change for the Z4 is the size of the hous-ing. The screen is the same 10.1in, now quad HD with a pixel density of 299 pixels per inch, but the bezels around the screen have shrunk – the tablet is 12mm shorter and 5mm narrower, making it one of the smallest 10in tablets available. The body is thin with a thickness of 6.1mm, light at 393g, and discrete with hard-wearing black plastic back, and nylon corners that are meant to absorb the energy and stop the screen shattering if the tablet is dropped. It’s an understated design and the thinnest and lightest large tablet yet.

The 2K screen is great: it’s pin-sharp, very bright and with very wide viewing angles. It’s not quite as fantastic as Samsung’s OLED screen on the Galaxy Tab S but is in line with the subtle colours of LCD screens such as Apple’s iPad Air 2.

The screen is not covered by Gorilla Glass – the scratch-resistant glass used in most smartphones and tablets – but instead with Sony’s own scratch-resistant glass. In the past Sony’s own glass has proved to not be as scratch resistant as rivals. A screen protector might be a wise purchase.

SpecificationsScreen: 10.1in 2K (2560x1600) LCD (299ppi)Processor: Octacore Qualcomm Snapdragon 810RAM: 3GBStorage: 32GB + microSD card readerOperating system: Android 5.0.2 LollipopCamera: 8.1MP rear, 5.1MP front-facingConnectivity: Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, FM Radio,

optional 3G/LTEDimensions: 254 x 167 x 6.1mmWeight: 393g

Long battery life for work, short for gamingThe Z4 Tablet is fast and snappy throughout, run-

ning Qualcomm’s latest top-of-the-line processor, the octacore Snapdragon 810 with 3GB of Ram and 32GB of storage, plus a microSD card slot.

The Snapdragon 810 has allegedly been plagued by overheating issues. The Z4 Tablet does get warm during heavy use such as installing a bunch of appli-cations at the same time, but quickly cools and the performance is not noticeably affected in general use.

Overall the Z4 Tablet is not quite the fastest Android device I have used this year –that would be the Samsung Galaxy S6 – but is considerably faster than last year’s best Android tablet, the Samsung Galaxy

Tab S.Battery life is a mixed bag. It is excellent for less

demanding jobs – giving a full working day of more than nine hours when word processing (more on that later) – but not spectacular when playing games or anything that requires more processing power. That’s likely to do with the difference between the lower-power quad-core chip and the higher-performance, more power-hungry chip that it switches to when needed.

Sony’s excellent power-saving modes can extend battery life by days, including modes that barely limit capabilities but dramatically prolong standby life.

Is that a start menu?As with the outside of the tablet, the inside should

also be familiar to anyone who’s used a Sony prod-uct in the past five years, such as a Sony TV or a PlayStation 4. The Z4 Tablet runs Google’s Android 5.0.2 Lollipop but with a custom look. It’s not radical, and looks mostly like Android with only small visual tweaks. The main additions have been the integration of a task-bar-like additional menu of icons in the bottom left of the screen, and a start menu with recent apps and other settings that is triggered when a keyboard is connected. Sony also bundles a load of its own apps, including the solid Walkman app and a decent photo editor. A Navigon satnav and AVG antivirus app come pre-installed but can be deleted.

KeyboardSony’s big push for its new tablet is taking it into

the crossover space between PCs and tablets. The firm has made a new Bluetooth keyboard into which the tablet slots. It has a fully angle-adjustable hinge and when docked in the thin and light keyboard the machine behaves like a laptop.

It’s one of the best tablet keyboards I’ve ever used. The keys are quite short, but are almost full width with good travel and feel. It has a trackpad at the bottom that invokes a traditional mouse cursor on screen, responds to multi-touch gestures and is responsive, making it useful for fine-grain control.

The keyboard has a separate battery and is changed by microUSB. When closed, it protects the screen and creates a very thin and light PC replacement. The key-board weighs 365g, which makes the overall package, with the tablet, weigh just 758g: around 200g lighter than any laptop. The keyboard was good enough to use to write the whole of this review and many other articles sat at a desk or on my lap while on the train. My only real niggle was that the right-hand shift key is placed to the right of the directional arrows, meaning I kept hitting backslash while touch typing.

CamerasSony makes some of the best cameras in the mobile

business – the iPhone and OnePlus One use Sony’s cameras for instance. The 8.1 megapixel camera on the back of the Z4 Tablet is decent, if not exceptional, and is probably one of the best fitted to a tablet. The front-facing 5.1MP camera takes decent selfies and makes for an excellent video-chat camera.

VerdictSony’s tablets have always been excellent, but have

failed to stand out from the pack. The Xperia Z4 Tablet is the best yet and is thinner and lighter than most, with a great screen and solid battery life.

It’s also waterproof, without any fiddly doors cover-ing the charging or headphones ports, which means there’s basically no downside to being waterproof.

But the best bit is when the tablet is combined with the keyboard, making a very capable and simple laptop replacement that is thinner, lighter and lasts longer on battery than most.

Pros: Thin, light, waterproof, excellent keyboard, microSD card slot, 2K screen.

Cons: Not quite as sturdy feeling as some, expensive, variable battery life, no Gorilla Glass. The Guardian

Sony Xperia Z4: Thin tablet that’s also an Android laptopLighter than an iPad, waterproof and with an excellent keyboard accessory, the Xperia Z4 Tablet is Sony’s best yet.

BY RUBY TANDOH

As good as it is to bake with chocolate – chopped, grated, melted, in slabs, chipped, or shaved into wafer-thin curls – every chunk of the stuff that I put into a cake batter or brownie

mix is one less chunk for me just to snaffle at the kitchen counter. It can feel wasteful – and expensive – to slip good-quality dark chocolate into your baking, where it’s muted by all of the sugar and butter, its subtleties lost entirely. I prefer to bake with cocoa powder: it is more potent and bitter than processed chocolate, and with the depth of flavour to enable it to hold its own against the other ingredients in a recipe.

Black treacle cocoa brownies with clotted cream

Black treacle adds a bittersweet depth to these brown-ies – they’re perhaps the richest and most chocolatey I’ve ever had. Spoonfuls of clotted cream for serving help to balance this sweetness, sitting bright against the dark clout of the cocoa and treacle. Bake these until they’re barely set for an almost melting, squidgy middle.

Ingredients (serves 9)150g unsalted butter3 tbsp black treacle275g caster sugar90g plain flour75g cocoa powder¼ tsp salt2 large eggs150g clotted cream, to serve

Method:

Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/gas mark 4 and line a 15x22cm rectangular tin with baking parchment. Any similar sized tin will do – a 20cm round cake tin will be more or less equivalent in volume, while a 20x20cm square tin will give you a slightly shallower brownie (be sure to decrease the baking time accordingly).

Melt the butter over a low heat, then whisk in the treacle and sugar. Stir the flour, cocoa powder and salt together in a separate bowl, breaking up any rogue clumps as you go. Whisk the eggs, one at a time, into the melted butter mixture, then lightly beat in the dry ingredients, just until the batter is smooth. Don’t worry if the mixture’s slightly grainy.

Spoon the brownie batter into the prepared tin and lightly smooth the surface. Place in the oven to bake for 25-35 minutes. Exactly how long it takes to cook will vary according to the size and shape of your tin, but the most important thing is not to over-bake the brownie. For a perfectly dense, fudgy texture, cook until the brownie mix no longer jiggles in the centre when you gently shake the tin. The surface should be dried and even, and a knife inserted into the centre should come out with just a little sticky batter on it – don’t wait until the knife emerges totally clean, or you’ll have cooked it for too long.

Leave the brownie to cool completely in its tin before serving in nine generous chunks, with scoops of thick clotted cream alongside.

Easy cocoa birthday cakeChocolate cake is all or nothing: if it’s not hyperbolically

rich and chocolatey, it’s not worth making. It’s tempt-ing, then, to throw everything you have into it — melted chocolate, chocolate chips or chunks, swirls of salted caramel — to make it the best that it can be. But though I’m all for a commitment to extravagance, for me the best chocolate cakes are all the better for being pared back.

Rather than weighing down the cake with extras here, I’ve just made a simple cocoa powder batter complemented by light brown sugar, vanilla, coffee and salt. The sugar adds a toffee edge to the sweetness, vanilla and coffee bolster the chocolate flavour, while the salt brings the whole thing into focus.

You could swap the cocoa buttercream for a richer chocolate ganache, made with dark chocolate melted into an equal weight of scalding double cream, but I think that the heaviness of ganache smothers the mild cocoa kick of the cake. A compromise, if you want something a little more grown up, would be to ice the cake as detailed below, chill it well then glaze with a thin coat of ganache afterwards.

Ingredients (serves 6-8)275g salted butter, very soft275g soft light brown sugar2 ½ tsp vanilla extract4 large eggs225g plain flour75g cocoa powder3 tsp baking powder150ml weak black coffeeFor the buttercream225g salted butter, softened50g cocoa powder2 tsp vanilla extract325g icing sugar2 tsp instant coffee dissolved in 2 tsp water

MethodPreheat the oven to 180C/350F/gas mark 4. Grease

two 20cm round cake tins (loose-bottomed or springform are best) and line their bases with circles of baking parch-ment. Beat the butter with the soft light brown sugar in a large mixing bowl for several minutes, creaming the mix until it is perfectly smooth and light. Stir in the vanilla extract. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well between each addition to minimise clumping and curdling. Stir the flour, cocoa powder and baking powder together, then add this mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing just until smooth. Add the dissolved coffee and fold it in to create a soft, velvety cake batter.

Divide the batter between the two prepared tins and bake for 30-35 minutes, until well-risen and springy to the touch. A small knife inserted into the centre of each cake should emerge with no more than a couple of crumbs stuck to it. Leave the cakes to cool completely in their tins before unmoulding. For the buttercream, beat the butter until smooth, then stir in the cocoa powder and vanilla extract. Sift in the icing sugar a third at a time, mixing well as you go. The buttercream should be luxuriantly thick, but still soft enough to spread on the cakes without ripping them. Add a dash of milk or coffee to slacken the mixture, if necessary. Smooth a thick layer of cocoa buttercream over one of the cooled cake layers, then sandwich with the second layer and ice the top. Spread the remaining cocoa buttercream generously around the sides of the cake.

Home decoration ideas for busy people

Wish to revamp your abode, but don’t have the time to do it? Make use of cutlery, crockery and candles to beautify your nest. Avi Jain, co-founder of Homesake.in, shares some quick ways to spruce up your space:

* When it comes to a quick livening up of a living room, lighting helps. Add soft lighting devices like candles or votive to your living room. You can also place a few pillows on your sofa-set.

* Keep everything in your bed-room that makes you happy. Soft bed linens are a door to your blissful sleep. Place lamp shades for cozy lightings. Walls add dimensions to your room. Embellish them with your favourite colours and loads of memories by hanging photo frames.

* Essentials of a good looking kitchen include cooking and serving tools. Don’t hide your beautiful cut-lery and crockery sets in cabinets. Rather, display them. Window in your kitchen is an ideal place. Make some shelves and display your col-lection. Plus, the light through the window will make it look beautiful.

* Adorn your dining table with details like coasters, a crystal vase filled with fresh flowers.

* Always make sure to keep things back at the place where you pick it up from. This will not create clutter, and obviously a neat and trimmed room is always good looking. IANS

Actress Kate Hudson says “comfort-able” red carpet looks are the best. The 36-year-old, who is known for flaunting

lovely red carpet outfits, said her secret is to always wear something she feels she can “party in afterwards”, because listening to the guidance of numerous designers and stylists can result in a messy look.

“There are so many voices telling you what you should be wearing. I’ve learned that what works best for me is something I feel comfort-able in — something I can go on to the party

in afterwards,” femalefirst.co.uk quoted her as saying.

The How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days made the comments while talking to 61-year-old actress and former model Rene Russo, who said she “hated” Kate when she first saw her at an event because she always looks great.

“I hated you the first time I ran across you on a red carpet. You looked so happy in your skin. You looked amazing, and — I don’t mean this rudely — you looked as though you knew it... you must have a great mother,” Rossa said.IANS

09HEALTH AND FITNESS

Each year it seems there’s a new fitness craze. One that is, of course, better than any-

thing ever before and is guaranteed to get you amazing results, quickly. There are so many classes on offer that it can be hard to know which ones are best for you.

Circuit TrainingFor a workout that combines

cardiovascular and resistance train-ing, it’s hard to beat circuit training. Circuit training involves performing high repetition resistance exercises with short recovery times. The use of resistance exercises develops muscle tone and muscular endur-ance, while the high intensity pushes the heart to its maximum. The exercises are often a combi-nation of body weight resistance exercises, such as press ups and star jumps, and exercises using free weights. A typical class may involve 90 seconds of activity on eight to 10 exercise stations, with a short rest period between each exercise. The number of times the circuit is completed will depend on the inten-sity of each particular class. Circuits can be high intensity and physically demanding, but do not be put off if you are a beginner. If you pace yourself and are aware of your own fitness levels, you will quickly get

into the feel of the classes and be able to push your body hard, with-out exhausting yourself before the class has barely begun. ‘Bootcamp’ training sessions and Crossfit are both variations on the basic circuit training concept.

VerdictA fantastic total body workout,

using high tempo resistance exer-cises that helps build and tone mus-cle, while also burning fat.

BodypumpThese classes use weights to

tone and build muscular endurance. Bodypump is a toning and condi-tioning class with weights and is for just about everybody who wants to add strength training into their aero-bic workout. Using a combination of exercises performed with barbells and dumbbells, you’ll follow the routine of the instructor. As with all modern exercise classes, motivational music will help you get through the tough parts of the workout. If you are new to weight training techniques, you’ll need to have an introductory session to learn the correct form. And don’t fall into the trap of trying to begin with weights that are too heavy; body-pump classes generally involve very high repetitions, and what can seem like a manageable weight at first, can quickly feel like a dead weight.

VerdictThis class, popular with both men

and women, is fantastic for toning muscle, while also burning calories.

Boxercise/KickBoxingAs their names suggest, these

classes comprise boxing and mar-tial arts moves. Due to the somewhat aggressive nature (though no one actually gets hit!) of the classes, these classes are particularly popular with people who like a physical workout, and they’re great at helping to release built up aggression. Typical class will begin with a warm up, introducing some of the moves, then progress onto a session using punching and kicking moves. The main part of the class will use combinations of moves, to keep your heart rate up and your muscles working hard. Boxercise classes can be great fun and very rewarding, but be warned, you’re in for a tough workout!

Verdict Top class for releasing built up

aggression and relieving stress! If you are embarking on a fitness regime for the first time, or you are starting exer-cise again after a prolonged period of inactivity, it is important to have a doctor check your health status to ensure it is safe for you to begin.Contributed by Hamad Medical Corporation

Walnut diet may slow colon cancer growth

A diet containing walnuts may lead to genetic changes that can slow growth of colorectal

tumour, the third most common type of cancer worldwide, new animal study by Harvard Medical School has found.

The study examined whether walnut consumption can cause changes to micro-ribonucleic acids (miRNA), the nucleotides that are involved in altering gene expression.

“Our research demonstrates that a walnut diet causes significant changes in the expression profile of miRNAs in localised colorectal cancer tissue, and that a walnut diet incorporates protec-tive fatty acids in the colonic tumour either through its direct effects or through additive or synergistic effects of multiple other compounds present in walnuts,” said lead researcher Christos Mantzoros.

Walnuts are the only nut that contain a significant source of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an essential fatty acid criti-cal to various body processes and is known to reduce inflammation.

Walnuts also contain a variety of anti-oxidants, and numerous vitamins and minerals.

The researchers conducted the randomised study with two groups of mice. One group was fed the equivalent of two servings (56 grams) per day of walnuts for humans, while the second group received a similar control diet with no walnuts.

After 25 days, researchers found that in walnut-fed mice, key miRNA that may affect cancer cell inflammation, blood supply and proliferation were positively engaged.

The study results found that a smaller tumour size was associated with wal-nut-containing diet, suggesting that ALA may provide a protective benefit.

Tumour growth rate was also sig-nificantly slower in the walnut group compared to the control group. The study was published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry.

George Clooney talks politics at Tomorrowland premiere

Actor George Clooney, who is rumoured to be eye-ing a political career in the US, believes it is up to society to elect politicians who they believe can give

us all a brighter future. The 54-year-old signed autographs and posed for photographs in Leicester Square here on Sunday at the premiere of his new film Tomorrowland: A World Beyond, reports telegraph.co.uk.

Clooney was joined on the red carpet by British actor Hugh Laurie, who plays the villain in the film, and their young co-stars Britt Robertson and Raffey Cassidy.

The sci-fi adventure, directed by Brad Bird, is inspired by the futuristic land at the Disney theme parks and Walt Disney’s optimistic vision of an utopian future.

Clooney plays Frank Walker a former boy-genius inventor in the adventure movie who has become jaded about the future of the world, until he teams up with a teenaged girl who is determined to save it.

“I do believe that’s how we work it out - politicians are elected by us, so we as a collective can always make things better and we always have,” Clooney said at the event.

“I really do believe that every time things seem very bleak, and I believe that they look very bleak right now, we figure it out. We have to, that’s how society moves forward.

I’m a happily married man. I’m very happy,” he added.Tomorrowland: A World Beyond is slated to release

tomorrow. Agencies

Michael Caine, Jane Fonda and Harvey Keitel are combining their legendary acting heft to one of the Cannes Film Festival’s most-anticipated movies this

year, Youth, which premiered yesterday. The film, directed by Italian Paolo Sorrentino, who

won an Oscar last year for his story of Italian decay, The Great Beauty, is an ensemble piece filmed in English and set in the Alps.

Rachel Weisz and Paul Dano round out the casting. But it’s the three veteran actors that have critics and journalists most eager to watch a picture that could have a shot at winning Cannes’s big prize, the Palme d’Or. Here’s what the three big names are bringing to the movie:

Michael CainePossessing one of Hollywood’s most recognisable

voices and a 60-year career, Caine enjoys iconic status. The 82-year-old has long said he is semi-retired,

but continues to add to his vast body of work, having recently appeared in sci-fi epic Interstellar, the box-office hit Kingsman: The Secret Service, and the block-buster Batman trilogy.

Born Maurice Micklewhite to a fish-porter father and cleaner mother in working-class southern London, he chose his stage name in tribute to his favourite movie The Caine Mutiny.

He has appeared in over 115 films and been Oscar nominated six times. He won the golden statuette twice, for Woody Allen’s Hannah and her Sisters in 1986 and Cider House Rules in 1999.

His movie career started out with hits such as Zulu (1964) and The Italian Job (1969). His portrayal as a charming gangster in 1971’s Get Carter and wom-aniser in Alfie established him as the acting face of Swinging Britain. Caine was honoured with a knight-hood in 2000. He has also turned his talents to food, becoming a celebrated restaurateur with eateries in London and Miami.

Jane FondaOscar-winning actress Jane Fonda remains at the

top of her evergreen game at the age of 77.Born in 1937 in New York to Hollywood star Henry

Fonda, Jane would follow in her father’s footsteps to be a dominating presence on the silver screen.

She won her first Oscar for the 1971 film Klute and her second in 1979’s Coming Home.

She also became known for her leftist political views, becoming a vocal anti-war opponent to the US military adventure in Vietnam.

The 1980s were a heady time for Fonda. Not only

was she at the top of her acting career but in 1982, she launched a line of workout videos that became a smash hit.

She underwent another dramatic transformation in the late 1980s when she decided to stop acting and marry media mogul Ted Turner. After Fonda’s marriage to Turner, she dropped out of public view for the next decade.

Following a divorce with Turner in 2001, Fonda charged back into the acting spotlight, appearing in Monster-in-Law alongside Jennifer Lopez, and with Lindsay Lohan in 2007’s Georgia Rule.

In recent years, she played a network mogul in the TV series The Newsroom and stars in the new Netflix original series Grace and Frankie.

Harvey KeitelFrom Mean Streets to Bad Lieutenant to Reservoir

Dogs, Harvey Keitel has been one of America’s favour-ite hard-boiled tough guys in some of its most revered cult classics. Born in New York in 1939, Keitel was a marine and a reporter before trying his hand at acting. It was Martin Scorsese that first nurtured his talent,

casting him in his first film, Who’s That Knocking at My Door before giving him the starring role in his breakout film Mean Streets.

Keitel would also appear as a sleazy pimp in Scorsese’s Taxi Driver and Judas in The Last Temptation of Christ.

Despite four decades of work with many acclaimed directors, Keitel has rarely been awarded for his work, garnering only one Oscar nomination — for best sup-porting actor in 1991’s Bugsy — though he did pick up an Australian acting gong for his part in the 1993 Cannes winner The Piano.

His collaborations with Quentin Tarantino have been perhaps his most iconic, playing mobsters in Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction.

But film buffs will always associate him most with the evil and deranged addict in Abel Ferrara’s bleak 1992 film Bad Lieutenant, a film that demonstrated Keitel’s willingness to take on the most challenging and unlikeable roles. In recent years, Keitel has found a new outlet through arthouse favourite Wes Anderson, who has cast him in radically different roles for Moonrise Kingdom and The Grand Budapest Hotel. AFP

Human relationships are greater than politics. That’s what actor Swara Bhaskar has learned after two “memorable” visits to what

she once thought was “enemy territory” but where, after two visits to Pakistan, she was showered with warmth, hospitality and free ‘chai and samosas’ for being an Indian.

Her first visit to Pakistan was in 2005 with a friend.

It was, as she describes, “two college girls who just decided to liven up their lives by visiting enemy territory”.

“I think that trip taught me that people are always more important than some policies or actions of their government,” Swara said, post her second visit last month. This time, she went there for “work”. “I had gone for some meetings over a potential international film project that would require me to play a Pakistani immigrant, but also it was a chance for me to visit friends I have not met in 10 years as I visited Pakistan in 2005 and made some lasting friendships.

“Both my visits to Pakistan were made beautiful and memorable by the hospital-ity, warmth and friendship of my hosts, friends and even random strangers I met,” she added.

The talented actress, who has fea-tured in Bollywood films like Tanu Weds Manu and Raanjhanaa, recollected how in 2005, on the bus to Lahore, when some of their Pakistani fellow travellers learnt that she and her friend were travelling alone to Pakistan for the first time, they

made “three serious offers to stay in their houses”.

“In fact, traders in Lahore’s iconic Anarkali market fed us samosas and tea and biscuits when they learnt that we were Indian,” she said. After both her visits, she says “the one stereotype of Pakistanis that is true is that they are the best hosts ever and are generous and magnanimous to a fault with their guests”.

And she has spoken whole-heartedly about this in a Pakistani TV show, a video of which has gone popular in the online space. Political relations between India and Pakistan have been more of the “love-hate” kind. Over the years, increased cultural exchanges between them have eased out the tension, which has existed since the sub-continent was partitioned in 1947. In fact, Swara’s family was hesitant to let her go to Pakistan when she dis-cussed her travel plans, but the actress says this “preconceived notion about the country” is a very normal thing.

“Perhaps in the case of India and Pakistan, it is exacerbated by the political hostility between the two countries... But it requires only a little effort and intelligence to try and reach out beyond this image and realise that this can only be a part of the whole picture.

“My own experience was that Pakistan, the place and its people were very differ-ent from my imagination of them. I think the Internet and social media can play a very positive role in enabling the people of both countries to reach out and connect with each other on a human and more personal level,” added Swara, who will soon be seen in Tanu Weds Manu Returnson the big screen. Aishwarya returns with JazbaaFiery and determined — Aishwarya Rai Bachchan looks every bit of

that in the first look poster of her comeback film Jazbaa, the poster of which was launched online on Tuesday.

The poster features Aishwarya looking distressed and scrabbling in the dust with a city’s skyline behind her.

“J A Z B A A. THIS IS THE FIRST LOOK POSTER,” director Sanjay Gupta tweeted on Tuesday.

The film, which marks Aishwarya’s comeback to the silver screen after a gap of five years, is being officially launched at the 68th Cannes International Film Festival in the presence of Aishwarya and Gupta.

The former beauty queen, who has been setting fashion state-ments on the Cannes red carpet, will be seen doing some daredevil stunts in the movie, and she is said to have shot for the film in extreme conditions.

Jazbaa, a Hindi remake of South Korean movie Seven Days, also features Irrfan Khan, Anupam Kher, Shabana Azmi, Jackie Shroff, Atul Kulkarni, Abhimanya Singh, Chandan Roy Sanyal and Siddhant Kapoor. Produced by Essel Vision, White Feather Films and Viking Entertainment, it is slated to release on October 9.

Sonam’s special gift to MacDowellIt was bonding time for Bollywood fashionista Sonam Kapoor and Hollywood

star Andie MacDowell at the 68th Cannes International Film Festival here. The Indian actress gave a special gift to MacDowell to celebrate her association with a beauty brand.

The Khoobsurat actress presented the gift as a token to celebrate MacDowell’s association with L’Oreal Paris for 30 years. The face of Revitalift Skincare range, MacDowell has been a part of the L’Oeal Paris family since 1985.

The 29-year-old, who is attending the film gala as a L’Oeal Paris ambassador for the fifth year, heard about MacDowell’s relationship with the brand and she decided to surprise the Four Weddings and a Funeral actress in her own way.

As a sweet gesture, Sonam sent a congratulatory gift to MacDowell’s suite that was brought especially from India, read a statement.

Overwhelmed by Sonam’s gesture, MacDowell hugged Sonam and thanked her for the gift. The two were seen bonding over MacDowell’s long journey of 30 years with the brand and even posed for the cameras together.

After turning the red carpet of the gala into blue with her cobalt blue floor-sweeping gown, Sonam picked an Elie Saab creation in lime green colour with a combination of ruffled features, sequins and embroidered appliques.

Hollywood beauty MacDowell, 57, slipped into a summery tangerine flowing gown with a plunging neckline. IANS

How to play Kakuro:The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can

be of any size. It has rows and columns,

and dark cells like in a crossword. And,

just like in a crossword, some of the

dark cells will contain numbers. Some

cells will contain two numbers.

However, in a crossword the numbers

reference clues. In a kakuro, the

numbers are all you get! They denote

the total of the digits in the row or

column referenced by the number.

Within each collection of cells - called
