Venturing out of her comfort zone to make this a reality, Colette signed up with Projects Abroad to go to Kenya for a three months volunteer experience at a care project. Colette was placed at the Kardeesh-Ber-Nea Orphanage which was started in 2011 by a local mother, Regina, in response to the poor conditions that babies, many of them with cerebral palsy, had to live in. Colette’s responsibilities at Kardeesh-Ber-Nea included waking up the babies every morning, feeding, bathing and dressing them, as well as playing with them for the rest of the day. She also helped out by making the beds and changing nappies. Working at the orphanage and with the different babies has made a huge impact on Colette, especially baby Ramsey whose progress she was able to see improving each day, from crawling to walking. “From this experience, I have been taught how to take care of children and really treat them well.” says Colette. She plans to continue working with disadvantaged children by volunteering at another care project in Nepal. After this Colette plans to return to Kenya to tour the country with fellow volunteer, Samantha Quinn, to raise money for the expansion of Kardesh-Ber-Nea. While the Kenyan culture is vastly different from that of Belgium’s, her host family helped a lot in introducing her to the Kenyan way of life. Colette enjoyed the scenery, the friendly people, the traditional food and she particularly loves that everything in Kenya is so colourful. Volunteering and being in a developing country has opened Colette’s eyes, “I have learnt how to appreciate small things in life like the morning sunshine and a big smile on a baby’s face.” Projects Abroad hopes that great stories like Colette’s inspire more people to join Projects Abroad in making a difference, and by doing so, learn something themselves along the way. Colette Van Dingenen, a 23 year old fashion school graduate from Belgium, has always dreamt of visiting Africa.

Colette’s responsibilities at Kardeesh-Ber-Nea included waking

up the babies every morning, feeding, bathing and dressing them, as well as playing with them for the rest of the day. She also helped out by making the beds and changing nappies.

Working at the orphanage and with the different babies has made a huge impact on Colette, especially baby Ramsey whose progress she was able to see improving each day, from crawling to walking. “From

this experience, I have been taught how to take care of children and really treat them well.” says Colette.

Volunteering and being in a developing country has opened Colette’s eyes, “I have learnt how to appreciate small things in life like the morning sunshine and a big smile on a baby’s face.”

Projects Abroad hopes that great stories like Colette’s inspire more people to join Projects Abroad in making a difference, and by doing so, learn something themselves along the way.
