Dear SHARP Parent(s)/Guardian(s), We had a very busy April with so many school activities!!! On April 1 st , we had two major events: our annual Author Day and the 3 rd Grade Recorder Evening Concert. Both events were great! The kids and parents loved them. We had our monthly attitude assembly on “Curiosity and Creativity” presented by Mrs. Fliegel’s and Mrs. Rappaport’s classes with our musical mornings program. Our first Friendly’s Night out was a huge success!! The PTA-sponsored “Human Board Game” assembly was a hit with the kids as well as with the teachers and staff!!! We had an amazing Teacher’s Appreciation Week with our Superhero theme!!! Thank you to all the families that donated funds for this very special week. Our teachers/staff really appreciated getting smoothies, pretzels, hoagies, hot cooked breakfast, a special snack jar and the most beautiful display case full of our everyday Superheroes at school--our teachers!!! Our annual Spring Book Fair/Family Night/Ice Cream Social was a success in addition to the popular poster contest. The Sharp community loved hearing the 4 th and 5 th graders at the Spring concert in Band/Orchestra/Chorus. Our talented students made special “Trash to Treasures” projects which were on display at the annual Cherry Hill Earth Festival. Lastly, we had our yearly Sharp Phillies Day!!! This May, we have even more activities planned for the Sharp community around PARCC testing. The Second Part of the PARCC testing will take place in May. Originally, it was planned for 4 weeks, but the District was able to combine it to 2 weeks. Our last movie night of the year will take place outside on 5/8 with “Big Hero Six” being shown to the Sharp Community. Our yearly Sharp Night at the Riversharks will take place on 5/9. Lastly, our biggest fundraiser of the year--“Bingo and Baskets”--will take place on 5/26 (please see flyer attached). Most importantly, all of our events and programs throughout the year can’t happen without volunteers!!! Dear Sharp Community,

“Grit is not static. It fluctuates throughout every stage of life.” This is one of many points to ponder by

Dr. Angela Lee Duckworth, Cherry Hill graduate and 2013 MacArthur Fellowship recipient, at her presentation

on True Grit at CHHS West on April 16. Dr. Duckworth spoke to many community students, parents, and

educators about the positive outcomes that are typically produced out of one’s grit and determination to go

forward in work, especially in times of distraction or even adversity. She further explained through her

research, ranging from gritty pioneers Charles Darwin to John Wooden, that the concept of true grit is not new,

but the continuing research behind it, including some she and colleagues conducted recently in Cherry Hill,

overwhelmingly suggests that being gritty can turn plans into reality.

Talent is important, intelligence is important, but grit is also needed to maintain momentum in practice

and achievement. When practice becomes difficult, grit is what helps cultivate talent and intelligence. I

especially appreciated her comment on how grit is not granted to us, but it must be learned, often through our

mistakes, and how much of a role we play in mentoring and cultivating grit on our young learners. Dr.

Duckworth noted that grit is not something that we cultivate in one child, but something that we cultivate in the

community. We must celebrate the hard work, practice, and mistakes that help us learn. No matter what our

students want to be, it is going to take hard work and practice. We need to instill that work ethic in them now.

While Dr. Duckworth’s research has shown that grit does improve with age, it is certainly something that we can

all help nurture in our young learners.

More information will soon be available on our district website regarding Dr. Duckworth’s work and

presentation to the Cherry Hill community. In the meantime, I invite you to use the following address to view a

brief presentation Dr. Duckworth made in 2013: https://www.ted.com/speakers/angela_lee_duckworth

Our Sharp students continue to “Work Harder to Get Smarter.”

Sincerely,

Ric Miscioscia

Principal
