Study Abroad History of YFU

•In 1951 an American minister, John Eberly led a movement that brought teenagers from war-torn Germany to the United States to live with host families and attend high school for a year in an effort to heal the wounds of World War II.

•YFU was officially founded as Youth for Understanding in 1952 by Rachel Andresen, educator and social worker.

Study Abroad RegulationsYFU must comply with standards set by:

•YFU Basic StandardsYFU organizations around the world share guidelines with respect to student and host family selection, support, orientations, and organizational management.

•United States Department of State These guidelines are designed to ensure that students are provided with basic services ranging from where they will sleep to how they will be oriented about the exchange experience. The US Dept. of State has designated Youth for Understanding USA as a sponsor for J1 student visas.

•CSIET (Council on Standards for International Educational Travel)Being listed as an accredited program with CSIET provides us with the credibility to place students in local high schools across the country. The Council for International Educational Travel (CSIET) is a private organization, which overseas the administration of foreign exchange programs. CSIET was actually created by a YFU initiative!

Study Abroad

YFU is volunteer-based and volunteer supported!

•If you would like to be a part of the International Students’ experience in the US, you can help us:

-recruit and interview host families-provide support to students and host families-coordinate successful orientations for our participants-create marketing materials-project management in social media -plan and facilitate social outings with International Students

•If you are interested in our American Overseas program (AO), you can help us:-recruit students to go overseas-interview students after they apply-help with pre-departure orientation-coordination of AO Alumni events

These are only two areas to which volunteers can contribute. There are many other tasks that need to be accomplished and these can be discussed with your field director.

**We value your experiences and your individuality and believe there is a special way for you to contribute to our YFU team!

Study Abroad ConfidentialityConfidentiality is a cornerstone of our organization because we

value the privacy of our students and host families.

• YFU works on a “need to know” basis. Information is shared appropriately with others in order to carry out their responsibilities as volunteers and staff.

• YFU prohibits any release of information to non-YFU persons about host families and/or students without their permission.

• We expect host families and their students to show each other mutual respect.

-YFU considers it unethical to examine a student’s personal belongings.

-The student must respect the same rights regarding host family belongings as well as the private life of a host family.

Study Abroad Conclusion

Thank you for participating in this YFU USA volunteer orientation workshop. We are pleased to welcome you as a vital part of YFU USA, and we are looking forward to working with you!

“If you could only sense how important you are to the lives of those you meet; how important you can be to the people you

may never even dream of. There is something of yourself that you leave at every meeting with another person.”

~Fred Rogers, The World According to Mister Rogers
