GIVING THOUGHT In today's Gospel, Jesus miraculously feeds a crowd of thousands. He is able to do so because the disciples of Jesus gave what they had. They gave Jesus their five loaves and two fish. Jesus blessed what they offered and thousands were fed. As disciples of the Lord we are to give what we have to the Lord, namely, our time, our talent, and our treasure so that God’s good work may continue in our world. A SPECIAL MOMENT LAST SUNDAY

Have you ever had a moment when something you had seen many times before suddenly had a fuller, deeper meaning that you had not previously appreciated.

I had one of those special moments last Sunday, July 24, at the end of our 9 am Sunday Mass. I was standing in the front of the church, on the lower level, looking into the building as the procession was making its way from the altar to the vestibule of the church. There were three junior altar servers, dressed in albs, leading the procession. One server was carrying the cross, and two others were carrying lighted candles.

Obviously, I had witnessed such a scene hundreds and hundreds of times in my years as a priest. But last Sunday as a I watched the processional cross being

carried toward the doors of the church, I "saw" something I had not seen before.

I saw Christ, represented by the processional cross, leading the people of Saint Joseph Parish. The men, women, and children who had just heard Christ speak to them in the scripture readings and had been fed and nourished by the bread and wine of the Eucharist, were now

going forth into world.

They were going out from a place of worship to a place of service. They were going forth to bring Christ into Oradell, New Milford, and to the other towns where our parishioners live.

It struck me that perhaps the processional cross should be carried not just to the doors of the church but right down the front steps. But in sense, that is already happening if we recognize that we carry the cross, we carry Christ, down the steps of the church building. As we are told by the priest, "The Mass is ended. Go to love and serve the Lord."

That scene last Sunday also brought to mind a famous Christian hymn, Onward, Christian Soldiers. It is a hymn not used too often today because of its military imagery, but its lyrics are worth considering. The first lines of that hymn are:

Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war, with the cross of Jesus going on before.

Christ, the royal Master, leads against the foe; forward into battle see his banners go!

When we go forth from church we go into a society and a world that all too often is hostile to the values of the Gospel and hostile to Christianity. Yet we go forward with hope and confidence, for the cross of Christ proclaims that in the end goodness will be victorious, the message of the Gospel will win out.

I think I saw something more last Sunday because Sister Donna Ciangio, who has been working with our Parish Staff and Parish Pastoral Council, has been making the point over and over again that as Christians we are gathered and sent.

We are gathered together as God's people, as God's Church, and then we are sent forth on a mission. We come together for Mass, and then we are sent out with a mission. We come together for a parish meeting or event, and then we are sent out. Our mission is the same one that Christ gave his disciples just before the Ascension. Christ said, "

"All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son,

and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you."

(Matthew 28: 18-19)

God brings us together as his people and then God sends us out to make a difference in this world. That is what I saw last Sunday at the end of our 9 am Sunday Mass. I saw something powerful indeed! Or in keeping with the closing hymn last Sunday, I saw something "awesome." Love, Father Tom Iwanowski

LOOKING FOR THE RIGHT SCHOOL FOR YOUR CHILD?

THEN LOOK NO FURTHER!

Our parish sponsors a wonderful elementary school that serves children from Pre-Kindergarten through Eighth Grade. Saint Joseph School is accredited by the Middle

States Association of Colleges & Schools and is among only 50 private schools nationwide nominated to submit an application to become a Blue Ribbon School.

In addition our school is opening a new early childhood learning program called

THE GREENHOUSE where little scholars begin to blossom. This full day or half day program for children 3 & 4 years of age will open this September.

MORE ON THE ROMAN MISSAL

On November 27, 2011, the First Sunday of Advent, the English speaking Church in the USA will begin using a new translation of the prayers used at Mass (The Roman Missal). A series of short articles explaining the coming changes are posted here in our bulletin so that we will better understand what will be taking place and why.

When will we starting hearing the new texts? Catholics will not hear the new texts at Mass until the First

Sunday of Advent, November 27, 2011. The is the Sunday

when the new English translation of the Roman Missal will

come into use.

Is this something that is just happening in our parish or

just here in the Archdiocese of Newark?

No, this is something happening in every Catholic parish in

the United States and across the world where English is the

principle language used in the liturgy.

Who will be most affected by the introduction of the new

translation of the Roman Missal?

Everyone will be affected to some degree. The people in the

pews will have to learn new responses and use a new

translation of the Gloria and of the Creed. Musicians will

have to learn new musical settings of the Gloria; the Holy,

Holy, Holy; and the Memorial Acclamation. But the ones

most affected will be the priests. They obviously pray more

prayers than anyone else during the Mass so consequently

they will be dealing with more prayer changes than anyone

else. For example, priests who have been ordained 30 or 40

years have become very familiar with the words of the four

Eucharistic Prayers that contain the words of consecration.

Those prayers have extensive changes. Priests will once

more find themselves relying on the book held before them

or placed on the altar. In a sense all priests will be like newly

ordained priests becoming familiar with the text of the

liturgy.

PREPARING FOR MASS

The readings for next Sunday August 7, 2011 The Nineteenth

Sunday in Ordinary Time are:

1 KINGS 19: 9, 11 – 13: The Lord revealed himself to the

prophet Elijah. He was present in a tiny whispering sound..

ROMANS 9: 1 – 5: St Paul is full of zeal for the mission

entrusted to him and wishes to save his people.

MATTHEW 14: 22 – 33: Jesus shows his power to the disciples

by calming the storm that was threatening them.

18th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Sunday Gospel

"Taking the five loaves and the two

fish, and looking up to heaven, he said

the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, who in turn

gave them to the crowds. They all ate

and were satisfied, and they picked up the fragments left over. Twelve wicker

baskets full." - Mt 14:13-21
