Residents First and Public Reporting InitiativesResidents First is a quality initiative that is provincial in scope. The initiative is beingimplemented in partnership with Ontario’s Local Health Integration Networks (LHINs), theOntario Health Quality Council (OHQC), and sector associations such as OANHSS,OLTCA, Ontario Association of Residents’ Councils and the Ontario Family CouncilProgram, all of whom strive for quality care for residents living within long term care. Itis being implemented over a five year period, beginning in 2010, within four regions ofthe province: Central East, Hamilton Niagara Haldiman Brant, Mississauga Halton andNorth West. The initiative is also being extended to homes such as Villa LeonardoGambin that participated in an existing collaborative with the MOHLTC and OntarioHealth Quality Council, (the Pressure Ulcer Awareness Program [PUAP]).

The expected outcomes for the initiative are:• Improved resident experiences and staff satisfaction• Reduced Emergency Department Transfers• Reduced adverse events and improved clinical outcomes• Elimination of waste and improved efficiency• Facilitation of the ability of staff to “take back” time that they can then spend providing more direct care to residents

Villa Leonardo Gambin has volunteered to partner in the Resident First program and has chosen to focus onthe pressure ulcer prevention program to sustain best practice that has been implemented through our firstyear of the Pressure Ulcer Awareness Initiative. The home is striving to ensure our residents are monitored andreceive timely interventions to reduce their risk of developing pressure ulcers.

Through the Residents’ First initiative, training is provided to the leaders within the home to help them buildon proven and recognized leadership skills. The enhancement of these skills will help ensure quality practiceswithin the home, will increase staff familiarity with performance measurement tools that can be used to evaluateimprove and report on processes used within the home, ensure enhanced accountability, as well as enhancingboth leadership and resident and family commitment to quality care.

The home has also volunteered to be part of another program imitative, Public Reporting, sponsored by theOntario Health Quality Council. Currently seventy homes across the province are involved in this program. Thepublic website provides information on key areas where long term care homes are measuring quality. The mainpurpose of this site is to encourage residents, families and staff in the homes to discuss information togetherand work cooperatively on ideas to improve quality. There are currently four indicators being tracked including:falls; pressure ulcers; and worsening bladder function. We are very pleased with results which currently demonstratethat we are above the provincial average in all areas. For more information please visit the website ashttp://www.ohqc.ca/en/index.php.

World Cup 2010 At The Famee FurlaneIt’s that time of the decade once again when soccer becomes the focal point ofeveryone’s interest in the GTA. The tradition started in 1982 when Italy beatArgentina, Brazil and Germany on its way to its 3rd World Cup Title and Torontosaw a celebration that even the Leaf’s Nation would envy with 200,000 jubilant‘tifosi’ on the streets of Little Italy.

It was close in 1994 when Italy lost to Brazil in the final in Los Angeles in overtimepenalty kicks. But that was made up by the tremendous overtime penalty kickovertime win 4 years ago in Germany as Italy beat France in the Final. Can Italy doit again in successive World Cups?

Renza Ricetto and Arrigo Rossi receive their BonFurlan awards from Grand Master Gianni Ceschia.
