American Bikers for Awareness,Training, and Education (A.B.A.T.E.)of Minnesota is a not for profit, grassroots organization that is committedto educating motorcyclists and thegeneral public about motorcycling.A.B.A.T.E. members ride many dif-ferent types and brands of motorcy-cles. We are all people with acommon interest in a common activ-ity. The fact that we share an interestin motorcycling is more importantthan the type of motorcycle we ride.

There are chapters of A.B.A.T.E. lo-cated throughout Minnesota. Each ofthese chapters is represented on theA.B.A.T.E. Board of Directors (BOD).The BOD also includes theA.B.A.T.E. state officers. The BODmeets once each quarter to discussthe operation of the organization. Inaddition, each chapter holds amonthly meeting in their area of thestate. A.B.A.T.E. is a member drivenorganization. Members are encour-aged to participate in any of thesemeetings.

A.B.A.T.E. seeks to promote the pos-itive aspects of motorcycling andstrives to protect the rights of motor-cyclists by being involved in the local,

state and national political process.Safer motorcycling, reducing acci-dents and fatalities can be best ac-complished by education andtraining of both the motorcyclists andthe general public, not necessarilythrough additional legislation.

Our ability to enjoy many freedomswhile riding motorcycles in Min-nesota is the direct result of the workdone by motorcyclists in our state. These people have joined togetherto fight for our rights and freedoms.

The efforts of these people havemade Minnesota a leader in motor-cycle safety. We have one of thetoughest licensing standards in thenation, the best public awarenessprograms, and the most comprehen-sive rider education programs in thenation. These efforts have helped re-duce motorcycle accidents, injuries, and fatalities in spite of the growingnumber of licensed motorcyclists inMinnesota.

To continue these efforts we needyour support and participation. Showyour commitment to protecting andpreserving your rights as a motorcy-clist in Minnesota. Participate in the

meetings, rides, and the fundraisingactivities. You will be informedabout the motorcycle activities inthe state by receiving Road Noise, the A.B.A.T.E. monthly news publi-cation. A.B.A.T.E. is fun, educa-tional and a great way to meetpeople and make new friends withsimilar interests.

With your help, we can continue topromote the positive image of mo-torcyclists. If you want more infor-mation about A.B.A.T.E., pleaseattend any of our meetings, meetother members, and ask questions.

We are pleased that you have de-cided your rights are worth protect-ing, that the positive aspects ofmotorcycling are worth promoting, that education is important, and thatthe cost of an A.B.A.T.E. member-ship is a small price to pay to pre-serve and promote these principles.

Members are the most importantthing that A.B.A.T.E. has, so ThankYou for becoming a member andwe look forward to seeing you atour events.

First off, a big Thanks to Donna & Mark Beckstrand for theirHospitality.

Now the State Rally is over and from my point of view, I had agreat time. Ron and his crew should be proud of this year’sRally. Good weather and great fun.

October means shorter days and animals on the roads duringthose cool nights riding. Always expect the unexpected and besurprised when it doesn't happen.

Chapter fundraisers, holidays and before you know it, Bikerdayat the Capitol. Make plans now for February 8th. Tell your bossyou need that day off. With it being 4 1/2 months away, therewill be no surprises when you're not at work. There is strengthin numbers and this is a good way to show that we will not backdown and we are informed voters.

All right, since I am late with this, I better end this here. Re-member, we all are in this together, sink or swim, we decide.

See you soon and then some... Kevin

Where’s my flying car?

When I was about 12 I remember seeing an article in a sciencemagazine about flying cars. The article went on to describe asoon to be utopia of organized travel with commuters buzzingabout in the air. Now, 40 years later, we are still driving aroundwith wheels on the pavement. I often think about that when Ihear people or groups make crazy predictions about the futureor outrageous claims about the certainty of their agenda.Maybe the guy who wrote about the flying cars had no doubtthey would become reality. Or maybe he was just doing whathe was paid to do; write something controversial and impossi-ble to confirm that would hold people’s attention for a whileuntil they moved on to other things. Kind of like when theNTSB or NHTSA comes up with incredible estimates of livesthat could be saved if everyone would just wear a helmet whileriding motorcycles. Their methodology is very questionable butit doesn't matter, you simply can’t prove what might have beenin the past or what could happen in the future. It is pure specu-lation, much like the flying car. And big paychecks with greatbenefits make it a very rewarding career. Insurance industrygroups play the flying car game too for a very different reason. They know they can’t stop car drivers from hitting bikers andfewer motorcycles on the road would make them more profitable. Mandatory helmet laws reduce the number of motorcyclists on theroads. So they roll out the cherry picked statistics, create future projections based on nothing, and lobby very hard with lots of money torestrict your motorcycling freedom. We cannot match the money of the insurance companies or the office buildings full of governmentbureaucrats, but we do have a very powerful weapon – you.

A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesota’s Bikerday at the State Capitol will be Wednesday, February 8th and all freedom minded motorcyclists need tobe there. Constituent based, grass roots lobbying is a very influential tool. A strong showing on Bikerday will keep the things we don’twant from happening and will make the things we want a reality. They say those who show up run the world. If you want to control theway you ride a motorcycle in Minnesota, coming to the Capitol to rally in large numbers and personally meet your elected officials is theway to success. Don’t let others make your motorcycling choices for you. And if anyone tries to say your future will be safer based onmeaningless predictions and assumptions, just remember these four words – Where’s my flying car?

Yours in freedom,

Mack

PS - Thank you Mississippi Valley Chapter for the hospitality at your August meeting.

COMMITTEES AND REPORTS

Hello to all A.B.A.T.E. members!

Well, another rally has come and gone. Looks like, from whatI've seen, the people that were there had a good time.

The weather was perfect. Nice during the day, cool at night forsleeping. The memorial ride was a good ride on Saturday, thanks to FFR.

Our next focus is Bikerday at the Capitol. Also, all the fall ridesand winter parties that I hope all A.B.A.T.E. members try to at-tend in order to support the chapter fundraisers.

I hope everyone remembers that A.B.A.T.E. is a MotorcycleRights Organization that runs on memberships so everyoneshould have tri-folds on them at all times. If each of our 4000plus members went out there and signed up one person, justlook how the numbers would increase! So, for the month ofOctober, I'm putting a challenge out there to all A.B.A.T.E.members to try and sign up one person. You can even sign upa renewal that is not been a member for two years. Just thinkwhat our numbers would be in November!

To all chapters: If you need tri-folds or tear-offs, send me anemail or call and I will have them sent out in a day or two.

Also, Chapter Reps can pick up some at the B.O.D. in Octo-ber.

JUST A REMINDER: RIDE SAFE!!

Mickey

STATE RALLY REPORTRON ERNST (320) [email protected]

Worker of the month: Many!

From set-up to tear down, many stepped up and helped outand I appreciate all of you greatly. Thank you! I would like toextend a special thank you to Fred Pawelk and Reed Carlson. They have been our electricians for several years now, andthey donate about 24 hours to us each year, saving us a lot.Remember our sponsors; please continue to patronize themthroughout the year. Without their financial support and loanedequipment, the Rally would not be possible.

Lastly, I would thank all of you who attended. I hope you had agood time. For those of you who skipped it, you missed it! Iparticularly enjoyed the Bike Games. They were fun!

Planning 2012 begins next month. Please join us on the com-mittee. We'd like to see more involved. It was my pleasure towork for you again, -Ron

EDUCATION REPORTPAUL TJEPKES (320) [email protected]

October is here and riding time is now limited to those really nice days. We will soon ready our bikes for winter (ugly word) but we dolive in Minnesota. Along with winter comes the time when we are not on the road visible to the motorists. One way to keep us visible isto present Share the Road classes. If your chapter is not doing classes, now is a good time to start. Let's get Share the Road to be themost seen presentation ever presented to the public. We will then be noticed and recognized by the motorists of Minnesota. It's nothard. Be as excited about presenting classes as you are about taking that ride on that perfect day.

GO OUT, do a class, be the first in your chapter. YOU WILL enjoy the experience.

Till our paths cross, ride safe & free,

Paul

GAMBLING REPORTKIM OSTLUND (507) 334-7592 [email protected] WILSON AVENUE, FARIBAULT, MN 55021

Next meeting:October 14th, America’s Best Value Inn, Crookston, 7:00 pmNovember 19th, Bonfire Bar & Grill, Litchfield, 6:00 pmDecember 10th, Home of Frank Ernst, Chanhassen, 1:00 pm

First, I would like to especially thank Lorie Sindt for helping me with vendors at the rally. Without her help, I would not be able to dothat and take care of the gambling.

Secondly, I would also like to thank all the folks that helped sell tickets and draw tickets. It is so nice to not have to worry about gettinghelp at the rally.

And last but certainly not least, I really would like to thank my committee. Without them, there would be no gambling. They are alwaysthere whenever I need them. They are truly the best and I wish I had more of them.

Well, as of this writing I am still sorting through raffle tickets from the State Rally. So I don’t have a final count as to how many ticketswere sold. I can say that we did sell more than last year. I also don’t know which chapters sold the most tickets before the deadline. Iwill be revealing that at the October B.O.D. when I award the plaque. What I can tell you is who won. Congratulations to all the luckywinners:

• Bike Winner – Clay Linscheid, Butterfield, MN Ticket #3928 Sold by Rolling Prairie Chapter• $500 – Justin Anderson, Hastings, MN Ticket #3088 Sold by Mike Burgess River Valley Chapter• $500 – Renata Norgaard, Tyler, MN Ticket #848 Sold to herself Buffalo Ridge Chapter• $500 – Michael Groll, Ogden, UT Ticket #5037 Sold by South Central Chapter• $500 - John Ombler, Strandquist, MN Ticket #783 Sold by Bruce Berg Borderland Chapter• $500 – Jason Fuller, Roseau, MN Ticket #4642 sold to himself Borderland Chapter

For those of you that weren’t at the July B.O.D., during my report I mentioned that the chapters needed to start spending some of theirgambling funds or A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesota was going to have to pay taxes on those profits. Non-profit organizations are not exemptfrom all taxes and have to pay tax on certain types of income. For A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesota, that includes the profit we make from ourgambling activity. Non-profits are allowed to deduct all of their charitable contributions against their gambling income.

In the past, A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesota has spent more in charitable gambling than we had in profits for the year so there has been no tax.In recent years, this trend has been reversing and in 2010, A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesota did have to pay a small amount of tax to the IRSand also the State of Minnesota. These taxes can be avoided as long as we spend down our gambling accounts. A.B.A.T.E. of Min-nesota has a fiscal year that ends on March 31st. If your chapter has more in their gambling account on March 31st than they did onthe previous April 1st, then the gambling account has increased and there may be taxable income. So, it would be best to spend downtheir balance before the next March 31st.

I know that some of the chapters have small balances in their gambling accounts, but this does apply to everyone. For those of youthat have fairly large balances, may I suggest donating to Motorcycle Dial-A-Ride and possibly getting a trailer in your area! Or maybedonating to a rider’s training program in your area to help them upgrade the motorcycles used for the program. These are just a coupleof ideas. If you are uncertain as to whether a donation would qualify, please contact me.

Once again, if you are interested in joining this committee, we certainly would welcome you. New faces bring new ideas. Currently, weare deciding on the A.B.A.T.E. U 2012 raffle and if you are thinking same old, same old, then you need to get involved. This committeedoes make a lot of important decisions and spends a lot of money. But when you have the same 4 – 6 people doing these things, theytend to get stagnant. Even if you don’t want to commit to being a full time member, come and check out a meeting or two. LEGISLATIVE REPORTTODD RIBA (952) [email protected]

“I didn’t see the motorcycle”

Here I am on September 10, 2011 sitting down to write this month’s article and I don’t have to look too far for inspiration. I took a lookup the street that Dawn and I live on and the American flags are flying from nearly every house in our neighborhood. Tomorrow is thetenth anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks. It’s great to see my neighbor’s patriotism on display, but sadly on September10th ten years ago there weren’t nearly as many flags flying as there is now. It took a cowardly attack by some filthy evil dogs to bringout the flags and that attack put the fire in our bellies and our patriotism was renewed, let’s hope that we never let it get old.

Like I said it took a cowardly attack to bring out the flags, I sometimes wonder what it’s going to take to get bikers fired up about ourenhanced penalties bill. Will it take the death of someone close to us to light the fire in our bellies? Are we going to wait for a brother orsister of the road to get hurt before we take this effort serious? While Dawn and I were in Sturgis this past August we got a call fromMike Berger. He informed us that his wife Mary was involved in a motorcycle crash. A young teenage driver violated Mary’s right of wayand caused the crash. Mary’s bike is totaled and she will be out of work for at least a month and she has one year of physical therapyahead of her. That’s just a short list of the trouble, trauma, and anguish that the Berger’s had to deal with and will have to deal withover the next year. Do you know what happened to the teenage driver? She was charged with failure to signal a lane change. After thecourt costs were added that teenage driver paid a $150.00 fine and walked out of the courtroom with her driver’s license in her pocket. If you consider that to be justice then stop reading now, if that pisses you off then please continue.

We need to get this bill passed so we can get some justice for the victims of these senseless crashes. We also need to get justice forthe friends and families of the victims. We need to get the message across that “I didn’t see the motorcycle” is no longer a valid excusefor killing or hurting people. How are we going to do it you ask? It’s simple; we need to use a four point plan that has been used by mo-torcycle rights activists around the country over and over with great success. This isn’t a personal crusade, it isn’t some wild goosechase, this is time tested plan that has worked all around the country and here it is.

• Attend Bikerday 2012, if you can’t make it find a way to support it.• Contact your elected officials and tell them you want justice for the victims of these senseless crashes.• Contribute some cash to Motorcycle PAC of MN, these funds will help us get people elected that will help our cause.• Get in front of your elected officials at town hall meetings, parades, and chapter meetings and tell them

you want their help to get this bill passed.

Let’s get some justice for our brothers and sisters of the road, together we can get this done. I have heard motorcycle rights leadersfrom all over the country tell me how this plan has worked in their state. I have never once had a MRO leader tell me that division, con-spiracies, and soap opera atmospheres get bills passed. A strong plan and unity will get this deal done.

God bless America and our troops, may we never forget September 11th and the patriotism and unity we all experienced after that day.Stand and be counted or get the hell out of the way.

I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to every one that helped with the Entertainment Committee at the rally. From get-ting the stage lined up and put in place, setting up and tearing down, and Robbie with all his sound equipment. Helping set up and teardown the bands and keeping them happy. And let’s not forget at the end of every night cleaning out the shed of all the empty bottlesand cans. Every band that played was very pleased and happy and wanted us to extend a big Thank You to everyone in A.B.A.T.E.Thank you again for all your hard work.

Hello to all and welcome to fall. I had a good time at Rally this year, even if I was at the table most of the time. Hey, it just means every-one has to come to me (haha). I had good feedback on the new shirts and the ladies were wild for my two-tone long sleeve shirts. Thenew stuff will be on the next items list I will be handing out at the October B.O.D. Also, for everyone who asked, I will try to havepullover sweatshirts at A.B.A.T.E. U.

I would like to give special thanks and mention to the people who really helped me out. This is not in any order: Groucho and Doris -you guys were awesome, the lovely ladies from Metro (sorry I don't want to misspell names) but you know who you are, and Roger yourocked the clearance table. A thank you to those who helped me park the trailer and saddle back up: Jim and Jim go figure (haha). Thefolks who were silly enough to set up tables with me in the dark, who else but Straight River. Last, I would like to thank everyone whovolunteered to put this event on every year. Without you we wouldn't have a Rally.

Well, I think that does it for me this time. Everyone take care over the coming months and continue to work toward keeping our rights toride. I hope to see everyone at Bikerday. If the young pup can get the day off, so can anyone. See ya out and about.

I would like to thank everyone who called me about not getting their membership cards, but kept their receipts from the Algona rally. Icould not have entered you without that receipt. I would also like to thank everyone who worked at the Minnesota membership tablesin Algona and told these people to hold onto their receipts and that it was their temporary card until they received their "Hard" cards. This surely diffused some possibly difficult situations.

So,If you did not get your cardfrom our State Rally in Litchfield (Labor Day weekend) but kept your receipt, please call me at 800-224-6570. I will need a copy of your receipt and a new membership form filled out, but I will be able to get you entered.

MRF REPORTTODD RIBA (952) 239-0929 [email protected]

By the time you read this report, the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) will have already held its annual “Meeting of the Minds” con-ference. Riding season is winding down, and for some in the far northern reaches of the state, it may already be over. But what is notover is the need for you to join the MRF. Especially in these very tough financial times the MRF depends more than ever on your mem-berships. If you have yet to renew, give me a call and I’ll take care of all the paperwork for you. If you’ve been a regular member, howabout upgrading to a Sustaining Membership? The extra dollars will go a long way towards keeping the MRF’s office open in Washing-ton D.C. and keeping our lobbyist, Jeff Hennie, at work in the nation’s Capitol.

Freedom is never free, and unfortunately it takes more than mere dedication and hard work to defend, it takes dollars. And I know youprobably get tired of hearing Todd or me begging for those memberships. But please, if you have yet to renew, or if you’ve never beena member and are thinking of joining, give me a call or drop me an email. I’ll be happy to explain to you personally all of the great workthat the MRF has accomplished on your behalf, and how your membership dollars will help support the fight for freedom.

NCOM REPORTFRANK ERNST (612) [email protected]

The “It’s all About The Kids Run” sponsored by the COC (Confederation of Clubs) of Minnesota and supported by the MMCC (Min-nesota Motorcycle Club Coalition), A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesota and many independent riders took place July 23. I was not able to attendbut have been told the ride was definitely a success.

Here is some information on topics I continue to watch and hear about through NCOM and from others.

MMiicchhiiggaann hheellmmeett llaaww::

We are still waiting for action on Michigan Senate Bill 291. Michigan is one of 20 states with a mandatory helmet law for all riders. TheSenate voted 24-14 on June 28th to repeal their 40-year old helmet requirement for motorcyclists 21 or older, who have been riding forat least two years or passes a safety test, and have $100,000 in personal injury insurance.

A.B.A.T.E. President, Vince Consiglio, has asked for help requesting all rights activists to send a post card to Michigan's Governor,Rick Snyder, urging him to support motorcycle helmet choice for adults.

Mail to: Governor Rick Snyder, State Capitol, P.O. Box 30013, Lansing, MI 48909 or call (517) 373-3400 or e-mail [email protected].

Motorcycle Only Stops:

North Carolina, “HB 381 an act to prevent law enforcement agencies from establishing patterns for vehicle stops at checking stationsbased on a particular type of vehicle is now Session Law 2011-216,” reports Doc Ski, legislative director for CBA/A.B.A.T.E. of NorthCarolina and a member of the National Coalition of Motorcyclists Legislative Task Force (NCOM-LTF). We are also waiting on the re-sults of Mitch Proner’s law suit in New York concerning motorcycle only stops and checks. We will continue watching as these andother actions progress.

Insurance protection information:

The economic downturn is thought to be a major factor in the increase of uninsured motorists. In a new study, “Uninsured Motorists,2011 edition,” the IRC estimates the percentage of uninsured drivers in the U.S. is approximately 13.8%. This despite laws in moststates requiring drivers to maintain minimum coverage. (I have seen estimates from other sources indicating nearly 25% of motoristshave inadequate or no insurance).

As we have said before, protect yourself by making sure you’re fully covered, including uninsured / underinsured coverage.

National Sport Bike association:

In past articles and at A.B.A.T.E. Board meetings I have spoken of NSBA (National Sport Bike Association). I mentioned I would be get-ting some membership forms for those that would like them. I have received these forms and if you would like some let me know I willhave them with me at the October A.B.A.T.E. Board meeting.

12 October 2011 A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesota Inc.

TO: CHAPTER PRESIDENTS AND CHAPTER REPRESENTATIVES

SUBJECT: POSSIBLE CHANGE TO A.B.A.T.E. STATE RALLY DURATION AND DATE.

DUE TO LOWER ATTENDANCE AND VOLUNTEER RATES, I HAD A DISCUSSION WITH OUR STATE COORDINATOR ABOUT

GOING TO A TWO-DAY RALLY AND A WEEK EARLIER. I HAVE A.B.A.T.E. OF MINNESOTA PENCILED IN FOR THE WEEK-END BEFORE LABOR DAY WEEK-END AT THE MEEKER COUNTY FAIRGROUNDS IN CASE WE SHOULD DECIDE TO

CHANGE. WE STILL HAVE LABOR DAY WEEK-END RESERVED. SO WE HAVE THE OPTION OF LABOR DAY WEEKEND OR

THE WEEKEND BEFORE. SOME OF THE REASONS AND IDEAS FOR A SHORTER RALLY ON A DIFFERENT WEEKEND:

1. INCREASED COMPETITION FOR PARTICIPANTS. THE MILWAUKEE AND CONESVILLE RALLIES

ARE DRAWING MORE OF THOSE WHO HAVE NORMALLY ATTENDED OUR RALLY.

2. LABOR DAY WEEKEND OFTEN INCLUDES SEASON CHANGE TYPE WEATHER AND

QUICKLY CHANGING TEMPERATURES, THE FORECASTS OF WHICH DISCOURAGE ATTENDANCE.

3. AS THE RALLY ENDS JUST BEFORE THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL, SOME PARENTS MAY NOT

CONSIDER ATTENDANCE AS AN OPTION.

4. COMPETITION FROM THE STATE FAIR AND RENAISSANCE FESTIVAL

5. ONE DAY SHORTER ELIMINATES THE NEED FOR SIX SHIFTS OF VOLUNTEERS WHICH HAVE NOT BEEN COMPLETELY

FILLED FOR SOME TIME.

6. WE ARE THE ONLY STATE IN OUR REGION WITH A 3-DAY RALLY.

I DO NOT SEE A NEED FOR CUTTING OUR ENTERTAINMENT BUDGET. I THINK ALL WOULD ENJOY SOME AFTERNOON

BANDS AND/OR COMEDY. WE COULD HAVE A BREAK BETWEEN AFTERNOON AND EVENING SETS FOR BIKE GAMES ETC.CONTESTS COULD BE HELD BETWEEN BAND CHANGES. WE MAY EVEN SEE A DOUBLE-UP IN ATTENDANCE JUST FROM

CHANGING AWAY FROM LABOR DAY WEEKEND, THE THING IS WE DON'T KNOW UNLESS WE TRY. PLEASE DISCUSS THIS

REQUEST WITH YOUR CHAPTER AS YOUR REP WILL BE ASKED TO VOTE ON A DECISION. IT IS IMPORTANT TO DECIDE

THIS AT THE OCTOBER BOD MEETING AS MANY DECISIONS FOR 2012 NEED TO BE MADE QUITE SOON. WE HAVE A

MAJOR SPONSOR WHO HAS EXPRESSED INTEREST IN SPONSORING A NATIONAL BAND AND BRINGING BACK THE DYNO

DRAGS. PLEASE DISCUSS AND BE PREPARED TO MAKE A DECISION BASED ON FACTS AND PAST RESULTS. AND PLEASE

DISCOURAGE ANY RUMORS OR PERSONAL ATTACKS; THEY SERVE NO PURPOSE TO OUR MOTORCYCLE RIGHTS AND

SAFETY CAUSE. FEEL FREE TO CONTACT ME WITH ANY QUESTIONS.

THANK YOU,

RON ERNST

HOWEVER, THE BILL MAY YET BECOME LAW IF LEGISLATORS AGREE TO MAKE SOME CHANGES. ILLINOIS HASWHAT IS CALLED AN AMENDATORY VETO, WHEREIN THE GOVERNOR CAN REJECT A BILL AS PRESENTED FORSIGNING, BUT WITH CHANGES REQUESTED THAT, IF MET, WILL WIN HIS SIGNATURE.

AS WRITTEN, HOUSE BILL 2860 SPONSORED BY SENATOR GARY FORBY (D-BENTON) AND REPRESENTA-TIVE DANIEL BEISER (D-ALTON), SPECIFIES THAT MOTORCYCLISTS COULD RUN RED LIGHTS "AFTER A REA-SONABLE PERIOD OF TIME." QUINN OBJECTED THAT SUCH WORDING IS TOO SUBJECTIVE AND “ITSINTERPRETATION COULD VARY FROM INDIVIDUAL TO INDIVIDUAL AND COUNTY TO COUNTY." HE ASKED THATTHE BILL BE CHANGED TO SPECIFY THAT THE MOTORCYCLIST MUST WAIT TWO MINUTES. QUINN ALSOASKED FOR CLARIFICATION THAT MOTORCYCLISTS WOULD STILL HAVE TO OBEY SIGNS PROHIBITING RIGHTOR LEFT TURNS ON RED AND WOULD STILL HAVE TO YIELD TO ONCOMING TRAFFIC.

ABATE OF ILLINOIS SUPPORTED THE MEASURE WHEN IT PASSED THE LEGISLATURE IN MAY, WHICH ISSIMILAR TO LAWS ENACTED IN 11 OTHER STATES. “I WAS KIND OF DISAPPOINTED WITH WHAT THE GOVER-NOR DONE,” SAID SEN. FORBY. “ABATE’S GOING TO HAVE TO MAKE A DECISION ON WHETHER THEYWANT TO NEGOTIATE WITH THE GOVERNOR’S OFFICE OR TRY TO OVERRIDE HIS VETO.”

THE ILLINOIS LEGISLATURE HAS PLACED THE AMENDATORY VETO ON ITS CALENDAR FOR ACTION ONOCTOBER 19.

SINCE MAY 2008, ABATE HAS PUBLICLY EXPRESSED ITS OPPOSITION TO NEW YORK STATE'S TACTIC OFCONDUCTING HIGHWAY ROADBLOCKS WHICH DIVERT ONLY MOTORCYCLISTS FROM THE STATE'S ROADWAYSFOR THE PURPOSE OF CONDUCTING "SAFETY CHECKS".

BECAUSE MOTORCYCLES OPERATED IN NEW YORK STATE ARE ALREADY REQUIRED TO PASS ANNUALSAFETY INSPECTIONS, THE ONGOING NEW YORK STATE POLICE INITIATIVE SERVES ONLY TO HARASS, IN-TIMIDATE AND INCONVENIENCE MOTORCYCLISTS TRAVELING UPON THE STATE'S ROADWAYS. FURTHER, MO-TORCYCLE-ONLY ROADBLOCKS CONDUCTED IN THE NAME OF "SAFETY CHECKS" ARE A DISCRIMINATORY ANDUNCONSTITUTIONAL INFRINGEMENT UPON AN INDIVIDUAL'S RIGHT TO TRAVEL WITHOUT INTERFERENCE, ANDAN ABUSE OF DISCRETIONARY POWER AS ACKNOWLEDGED BY THE NEW YORK STATE COURT OF APPEALS.

THE OFFICE OF THE ATTORNEY GENERAL WAS REPORTEDLY RECEPTIVE TO PROSPECTOR'S REQUEST OF ANINVESTIGATION INTO THE ACTIONS OF THE NEW YORK STATE POLICE, AND A REPORTING MECHANISM HASNOW BEEN IMPLEMENTED FOR DIRECT COMPLAINTS OF MOTORCYCLIST PROFILING.

THE VIEW PAST THE HANDLEBARS

GETTING HIT

MORE THAN LIKELY, YOU’VE HEARD THE OLD LINE ABOUT HOW THERE ARE TWO KINDS OF BIKERS – THOSEWHO HAVE GONE DOWN, AND THOSE WHO HAVE YET TO GO DOWN. IN ALL MY YEARS OF RIDING, I NEVERREALLY GAVE THAT STATEMENT MUCH CONSIDERATION OR WEIGHT. YES, I KNOW BIKERS WHO HAVE GONEDOWN, SOME OF WHICH HAVE DIED AND SOME WHO RECOVERED. AND OBVIOUSLY I’VE KNOWN FAR MOREWHO HAVE NEVER HIT THE PAVEMENT. TO ME, THAT STATEMENT WAS NOTHING MORE THAN AN EXCUSE FORLACK OF RIDING SKILLS, THAT IF YOU PRACTICED ENOUGH, IF YOU WERE AWARE ENOUGH AND IF YOU WEREA SANE A CAREFUL RIDER, THEN THERE WAS NO EXCUSE FOR “GOING DOWN.” IT SIMPLY WOULD NEVERHAPPEN TO ME.AS IT TURNS OUT, I WAS RIGHT IN ONE ASPECT, IT DIDN’T HAPPEN TO ME. IT HAPPENED TO MY WIFE. ONHER WAY RIDING HOME FROM WORK THIS PAST AUGUST, A 19YEAROLD GIRL TURNED LEFT IN FRONT OFHER. WITH NO CARE, NO CONCERN AND OBVIOUSLY NO AWARENESS, THIS GIRL TURNED HER BOYFRIEND’SFATHER’S PICKUP RIGHT IN FRONT OF MY WIFE ON A 55MPH FAIRLY RURAL STRAIGHTAWAY. AND NEEDLESSTO SAY, MY WIFE WENT DOWN. SHE AVOIDED HITTING THE TRUCK, BUT HER IMPACT WITH THE ROAD STILLRESULTED IN MULTIPLE SKULL FRACTURES, A TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY, DAMAGE TO HER LEFT HAND, ABRUISED LUNG AND OTHER INJURIES. ALL BECAUSE A TEEN DRIVER CLAIMED SHE “DIDN’T SEE THE MO-TORCYCLE.”MY WORLD FELL OUT FROM UNDER ME WHEN MY NEIGHBOR CALLED TO TELL ME THAT MY WIFE WAS BEINGRUSHED TO HENNEPIN COUNTY MEDICAL CENTER. I TRIED TO CONVINCE MYSELF THAT SHE WAS OK,THAT SERIOUS INJURY ONLY HAPPENED TO OTHERS, THAT AT MOST SHE WAS MERELY SCRAPED ANDBRUISED. BUT WHEN THE CHAPLAIN AT THE HOSPITAL CAME OUT TO TALK TO ME, I KNEW DIFFERENTLY.SHE WAS ALIVE, AND WOULD EVENTUALLY RECOVER. BUT IT WAS A SERIOUS WRECK.I DON’T KNOW IF THERE IS A MORE HELPLESS FEELING THAN WHAT HITS YOU WHEN YOU SEE YOUR LOVEDONE LYING IN AN EMERGENCY ROOM BED, COVERED IN BLOOD, BADLY HURT. IF THERE IS, I DON’T WANT TOEXPERIENCE IT. AND AT THAT MOMENT, I DIDN’T CARE WHO HAD CAUSED IT OR WHY. I DIDN’T CARE ABOUTTHE DAMAGES TO THE BIKE. I ONLY CARED THAT MY WIFE, MY BEST FRIEND AND RIDING PARTNER, WOULDHEAL AND ONE DAY BE HERSELF AGAIN.UNFORTUNATELY, THIS SCENARIO PLAYS ITSELF OUT IN EMERGENCY ROOMS ALL ACROSS THE STATE ANDTHE COUNTRY. CARELESS DRIVERS DON’T SEE MOTORCYCLISTS, BICYCLISTS OR PEDESTRIANS. THEY DRIVEWITHOUT AWARENESS, WITHOUT CARE AND WITHOUT CONCERN FOR THE OTHERS WHO SHARE THE ROADWITH THEM. THEY INJURE, MAIM AND KILL, THEY CLAIM TO FEEL SORRY FOR THEIR ACTIONS IN COURT,AND OUR JUDGES CONTINUALLY LET THEM OFF WITH A MINOR FINE AND A SLAP ON THE WRIST. RULINGSTHAT ARE THE JUDICIAL EQUIVALENT TO A SPIT IN THE FACE.AS IT TURNS OUT, MY WIFE AND I WERE LUCKY. ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS SHE SAID IN THE HOSPITALBED, ONCE SHE WAS AWARE OF WHAT WAS GOING ON, WAS THAT SHE WAS NOT GOING TO LET SOME19YEAROLD TAKE AWAY HER ABILITY TO RIDE. SHE IS RECOVERING AND WHILE IT WILL PROBABLY TAKETHE BETTER PART OF A YEAR FOR THE PHYSICAL DAMAGE TO HEAL, SHE WILL RIDE AGAIN. AND I’M LUCKYTHAT I STILL HAVE A RIDING PARTNER. THIS ACCIDENT COULD HAVE GONE FAR DIFFERENTLY, AND I FULLYBELIEVE THAT IF IT WASN’T FOR THE MANY EXPERIENCED RIDER COURSE TRAINING CLASSES THAT SHEHAS TAKEN OVER THE YEARS, SHE COULD EASILY HAVE DIED THAT DAY.IT WOULD BE EASY TO GET CAUGHT UP IN THE ANGER THAT I FEEL TOWARDS THE GIRL WHO CAUSED THIS,OR THE BITTERNESS IN WHICH I HOLD THE JUDGE WHO PASSED SUCH A JOKE OF A SENTENCE, A MERE$50 FINE PLUS COURT FEES AGAINST THE TEEN DRIVER. BUT INSTEAD I’M TRYING TO STAY FOCUSED ONHOW BLESSED I FEEL TO STILL HAVE MY WIFE WITH ME. IT’S NOT AN EASY THING, LETTING GO OF THEANGER. BUT IN THE END, I’D RATHER EMBRACE LOVE.THERE’S A FAMOUS BOXING QUOTE THAT GOES, “EVERYONE HAS A PLAN UNTIL THEY’VE BEEN HIT.” MYWIFE HAS BEEN HIT, BUT SHE HAS CHOSEN TO GET BACK UP. I CAN ONLY HOPE THAT WHEN THE DAY MAYCOME THAT I AM FACED WITH SUCH A CHOICE, I CAN MAKE IT AS BRAVELY AS SHE HAS.

Now is as good of time as any to start gathering items for the silent auction and doorprizes. So if you want to see any changes please come and be part of our meetings and let your voice be heard.

If you want to be part of the buddy bear run a new date will be determined at the September 16th meeting, which has not yet occurred. Ifyou were not able to attend that meeting you can contact Justin Grotjohn or Edgar Burke for the information.

That's all for this month, I hope everyone gets out to enjoy the fall colors.

Howdy Folks,

Bikerday 2012 !!

It is all happening February 8th.

Make sure you get your time in to your boss and let him know that day you will be working for yourself and the rest of the freedom lovingpeople of Minnesota. One of the most important days of the year. Only about 1% of our A.B.A.T.E. members usually show up. That’s notmany. This isn’t a guilt trip this is the truth. WE need YOUR help.

October 15th at Americas best Value Inn, Crookston, Board of Directors meeting.

Everyone is welcome at this event. Come and see what makes A.B.A.T.E. tick.

It’s really hard for me to keep writing right now. The Shovelhead is clean the sun is shining and there’s no wind. What a Beautiful Day.Hope it’s still nice out when you are reading this.

Well Got to Ride. See you on the road.

CENTRALNext meeting:October 8th, Justin and Jessica’s house, Foley, 4:00 pm

Following the October meeting we will be celebrating the 3rd annual Wing Fest at 6:00 pm. Justin and Jessica’s address is: 11000 115thAve N.E. in Foley or call (320) 387-3534 for directions. Bring a side dish to share at Wing Fest and a beverage of your choice. Has any-one else noticed more deer crossing the roads this year than at any time in the past? I’m thinking A.B.A.T.E. should sponsor deer huntingclasses to help the hunters bag a deer this year. Last year over 800,000 deer hunting licenses were sold in Minnesota, but only 32% ofthe licensed hunters bagged a deer. That’s 256,000 deer taken and 544,000 left to cross the roads that could have been made into somegood eating deer sausage. Here is some helpful information to avoid being a victim of a deer motorcycle accident when you’re out riding.

Deer travel in groups. One deer means there are probably more, so even if the one you see is off the road and going away, slow waydown immediately. Heed deer crossing signs, particularly in the seasons and times of day when deer are active. Slow down, use yourhigh beam, and cover the brakes. The Minnesota DOT says that deer collisions peak in October and November, with a smaller peak inMay and June. Such crashes between April and August are most likely to occur between 8:00 pm and midnight. Additional good, powerfuldriving lights are worth their weight in gold on a deserted road at night. Alternatively, fit a bulb with a 100-watt high beam. Noise, a horn, revving your engine, etc., may drive deer away. (Don't count on it though.) Flashing your headlights may break the spell that seems tocause deer to freeze. Deer and other wild animals are designed to be hard to see. Aside from the flickering white tail of some species orreflection from an eye, they simply disappear. However, this absence of reflected light can also tip you off. A "hole" in a white fence or wallor "missing" roadside reflectors at night might be an animal. A reflector that "blinks" might also indicate an animal passing between youand it. And to everyone that hunts, get out there and bag one for all the bikers and other motorists that are being injured by those mealson legs.

Well another wonderful State Rally has come and gone. It was great to see all my old friends again and make some new friends. Ron andSue Ernst and Marilyn and Keith Colsh you did a fabulous job! I know it is a lot of hard work to make the rally a success. To all thehelpers setting up, cleaning up and tearing down, Thank you! I am a little disappointed that the mud wrestling between the four District Di-rectors didn't happen. Apparently there was not enough mud and I didn't bring my mud-wrestling outfit. There is always next year! Speak-ing of next year I heard there was a challenge put out there for next year. The B.C.C. girls have challenged the 2 Wheel Diva's to a plankrace! You won't want to miss that! Also "Flying Monkey" is pictured below preparing for thetire pull. He wasn't allowed to compete since he didn't have full leathers and a helmet. Iwill work on that for next year also. Make your plans now to attend!

We will be having a Northeast District meeting Sunday, September 25th at 2:00 pm at TheCricket in Rock Creek. I will send out reminder emails to everyone and hope we have anice day for a fall ride to the meeting. Everyone is welcome, but the Chapter Rep's are en-couraged to be there or send a replacement to share information from your chapter. A lotof great ideas have been shared at these meetings and everyone benefits. We will want tofinalize plans to host the January B.O.D. in St. Cloud.

As always if I can be of assistance to anyone in the district please don't hesitate to call oremail me! I would be more than happy to help with anything I can. See ya' on the road!Hmmmm..... I guess,

Hey Sand Duners and Friends,

I hope you are all enjoying this fall weather. We had our ride androdeo just before the A.B.A.T.E. State Rally and we sure had a greattime!! Thanks to all of you Sand Dunes members who put in all thetime and effort to make our rodeo successful one more year. It surerequires a team effort. You folks do a great job.

I also wanted to thank the A.B.A.T.E. folks from other chapters thatmade it out there. I know there were folks from Central and Lake forsure and probably a few I didn't get time to chat with. We got to seesome friends we hadn't seen for a while and also signed up a fewnew members.

The Sand Dunes chapter was again fortunate to have donations fromthese businesses:

• KJ's Refuge, Orrock• Hardtails American Motorcycles, St Cloud• Northern Leisure, Sauk Rapids• Stoney's Bar, Rockville• Grumpy's Bar, Cold Spring• Eddie's on Grand, Grand Lake near Rockville• Pan-O-Gold Bakery, St Cloud• Moon Motorsports, Monticello• Zylstra's Harley-Davidson, Elk River• The Rum Shack, Foley• Bailey Ray's Roadhouse in Santiago

Thank you all for supporting the Sand Dunes chapter once again.

I also wanted to say thanks to all of you out there that again workedso hard to put on the State Rally. You did a wonderful job, thank youfor your dedication.

Ride safe and enjoy the moment.

All the best to you all, "George"

Upcoming event: December 18th, Jack Pine Riders Annual Christmas Party immediately after the meeting.

The Christmas Party is “Pot luck” so bring a dish to share or just come to enjoy. There’s always lots of great food and beverage.

Fall is here and October riding can be some of the best. Falling leaves, fall colors, comfortable stops to take the chill off. Seemingly end-less views, air crisp and refreshing.

One of the best things about owning a motorcycle is that they are the perfect vehicles for scenic drives. Whether alone or with a group offriends I hope you can get out and take advantage of what for many of us, is the closing of the riding season.

Thanks to all that attended the A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesota State Rally. There was a fairly large group of Jack Pine Riders in attendance. Ithink I speak for all of us when I say we had a blast. Hope to see more of you there next year. A couple of J.P.R. members announcedtheir engagement “on stage” at the rally this year.

Congratulations Tim and Beth. Can’t wait for the celebration!

EAST CENTRAL WWW.EASTCENTRALABATE.ORGNext meeting:October 2nd, Hunter’s Inn, Cedar, 11:00 amNovember 6th, Hunter’s Inn, Cedar, 11:00 am

Hello East Central!!

Well the State rally is over and now the weather is starting to get a little colder and with that the animals are on the move, especially deer.So keep one eye on the ditch when you’re out riding this fall.

I saw on the news about an organization trying to bring awareness of bicyclist getting hit and how little penalty there is to the vehiclesdriver. There was also a group earlier this year that wanted to increase the penalty if they hit a pedestrian. This is nothing new to us. WEhave been saying this for years. But because we wear leather and not spandex, nobody listens. We have included joggers, cyclist, skate-boarders, everyone in this bill ,not just a select few. I yelled at the TV “Join US at the Capitol.” I was at work and somebody started talkingabout how screwed up it is to hit bicyclist and only pay a small fine. Yes, you are correct. I just couldn’t let this go without enlighteningthem to the facts. I told them we (A.B.A.T.E.) have been trying to change that law and told them if they think it is wrong then call yourState Senator and have them support our bill. I told them you don’t have to ride a motorcycle to be a member and help support us in thefight. If you don’t want to join, fine, but at least support us in getting this law changed before your granddaughter gets hit on her bike andthe vehicle driver gets away with murder. All it takes is a phone call. Come on Minnesota!! Join the fight, screw Minnesota nice, and makepeople responsible for their actions while driving.

It’s getting close to that time of year again. I’m talking Turkey Bowling and the annual Bikers for Children Toy Drive. It will be held in No-vember. More info will be coming on the website as to the date and time.

As always if you have any ideas, questions or concerns regarding the Chapter, A.B.A.T.E. or the Website, email or call me. Rememberthis is your chapter and without you and your support we would not be able to enjoy the riding freedoms we have here in Minnesota.

Keep looking at the State and Chapter Websites for updates of what is happening.

I can't believe that this summer has already passed by so quickly. But can't say that I didn't have fun. Seems wewent from 40 below to 80 above in a day; can't say that I'm quite ready to switch back. Hopefully we will have plentymore days to sneak in some riding.

Hoping for a good turn out at road clean up tomorrow, we always seem to turn the work into fun.

For those that came to this year's Freedom Run, camp out and ride, thank you for participating. A special thanks to Lana for chasing be-hind and hauling the grub. It was nice to see some old faces and especially nice to welcome a couple of guests. Bent Trout campgroundwas beautiful and the staff couldn't have been nicer to us. Sorry to Lana and Mark, I'm pretty sure that it took the rest of the afternoon towash down the Borax from your coffee. I swear I thought that container held sugar.

Please remember that just because summer is drawing to a close we still have work to do. Support the effort so the effort can supportyou!

I don’t know about all of you but I had a great time at the State Rally. Once again, thanks to Ron, his Committee and everyone whohelped out in any way before, during, and after the Rally. Remember, it’s called the A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesota State Rally, not Ron’s Rally. There’s no way that Ron can (or wants to) put on the Rally by himself. Planning for next year’s Rally will begin at the October B.O.D. Ithink it was lucky for me that the Mud Olympics happened on dry land if the rumors were true about the four District Directors mudwrestling. I wasn’t too worried about Edgar and Tony, but I’m not sure if I could have taken Jean.

As the days get shorter and a little cooler, that can only mean one thing. That’s right; I’ll be out and about to visit all the Chapters onceagain. And that also means that chili feeds are just around the corner. I’ll do my best to make it to the chili feeds and fundraisers in theSouthwest District. I’ve been promising Kristie a romantic night out and since I’ve set the bar low in the romance department, she won’t betoo surprised to end up at a chili feed.

In case you haven’t heard, Bikerday 2012 is set for Wednesday, February 8th. That means I have to remember two important things thatday, Bikerday and Kristie’s birthday (after what happened the last time I forgot her birthday, I won’t do it again anytime soon). Mark theday on your calendar and put in the request for vacation, or better yet, save the vacation day and just call in sick that morning (just kid-ding).

One good thing about going to all the events, the meetings, the fundraisers, Bikerday, A.B.A.T.E. U., etc. is that it makes the winter go byso much faster and before we know it we’ll be digging out the bike again.

Ride safe, till next time, Jim

It does not seem that long ago but it has been ten years since the 9-11 tragedy. Most folks remember exactly wherethey were and what they were doing when the news of the attack came through. Buffalo Ridge has been invited toparticipate in the Honor Parade in Marshall as part of the Memorial Park dedication on Sunday the 11th. Our own Jan Loft-Pilgrim will be reading the names of the fallen during the dedication ceremony, I plan to attend. This program is a memorial to our 9-11victims and a celebration of the American spirit. Let Freedom Ring.

The State Rally has come and gone and was a great time as usual. One of the high points of the Rally was the bike games, followed bythe yearly tug of war. Thanks to Dallas and Wulfy for joining the Minnesota A.B.A.T.E. tugging team, the guys from Iowa lost for the sec-ond year in a row, see you next year!

I have heard due to the wet, cold spring we had the autumn leaves will be the brightest colors in ten years. Enjoy nature’s payback andcheck out some scenery. As always be safe.

"Respect is a close relative of tolerance, and both go a long way to prevent and alleviate the negative interactions between and amongpeople." -Joseph M. Marshall III

I think that this quote really is worth pondering for a good long while. In our chapter the people we see on a monthly basis, I think that wereally have a healthy respect for each other. It's possible that we may not like each and every person that is a member of our chapter, butwe respect each other. Not everyone we meet will be likable or respectful towards us, but if we can keep our peace, we can keep our dig-nity and hopefully find a common ground with others that we need to work with. This can apply to those in government we are trying tosway, people from other sections of A.B.A.T.E. that we are required to work with, members of clubs and the general public. It is a univer-sal tenant that you should treat others as you would like to be treated. It takes a very short time to burn a bridge and a very long time totry to build one.

Respectfully yours, Metro Megs

Hello all~

I do hope you all had a great time at the State Rally. I know I did, seeing the faces of old friends and making new ones, too. I have noticedover the past two years that our attendance for the State Rally is down and I had the chance to inquire with some people why theythought this was. I got a wide array of answers, but the one thing I keep telling people is that whatever ideas or suggestions you have toimprove our Rally, bring them up to the Rally Committee or better yet, join the Committee! We need fresh ideas and people willing to pitchin and help or we will be going nowhere. That's all I have to say about that.

I want to share with you an experience I recently had. One evening Moose and I decided to go grab a bite to eat instead of cooking. Wearrived at the local Mongo's and were seated. Sitting right inside the door was a group of about eight to ten people, a few of whom could-n't stop looking at Moose's prosthetic leg. We got our food and were eating when one of the groups, a middle aged man, came up to usand extended his hand to Moose. He shook Moose's hand, thanked him for his service, and told us that our meal was paid for that night.

This gentleman and his family made an impression on me, and as I write this we are approaching the anniversary of September 11th. Ican't help but think of what true patriotism means, as store windows advertise "We Support our Troops," but offer no military discounts orprograms to help soldiers, veterans, or their families. What does it mean to honor or support our military? Each of us has to come up withour own answer to this, but I know what it CAN look or sound like. It can be a simple thank you to the soldier/veteran and their family, orallowing a soldier/veteran to go to the head of the line, or buying them a drink, or even a bright smile and a welcome home. Veterans of alleras deserve the same respect as the ones of now. And the families deserve recognition and understanding too.

Until Next Time,

Live by the Spoon~Die by the Spoon~ Spoon

With the Labor Day holiday in the past, it’s only a matter of time before fall fully sets in. The of-ficial first day of autumn was September 23rd. But, even with cooler days, there’s still plenty oftime to do some riding and perhaps enjoy the fall foliage as only a biker can enjoy it; riding thecurvy, winding roads on your bike of choice. Enjoy the cool breeze, breathe the fresh air andfully appreciate the beauty of nature and the beautiful colors it provides during this time ofyear. We won’t even talk about the season that follows though!!

Fall (and that other unmentioned season) usually provides the time for planning events andrides for the next riding season that we all anxiously wait for every year. With spring and summer on hiatus for a few months and hopefullyyour personal social calendar not quite so full, no time like the present to join us for an A.B.A.T.E. meeting and bring your ideas forfundraisers, rides, and events. Fresh ideas are always welcome!!! With approximately 98 members in the Southwest Chapter, there aremaybe ten that regularly attend meetings. C’mon everyone, this is YOUR chapter, YOUR fundraisers, YOUR events, YOUR rides. Makesure YOUR voice is heard and things are being done in YOUR Chapter the way YOU wish!!! And, if YOU don’t like the way things are cur-rently run, YOU need to make a decision to become involved and make some changes where YOU see fit! We all have busy lives, we allhave jobs, kids, school events, and family functions, whatever else you can think of. But if you want changes made within the Chapter orthe government where biker rights are concerned, YOU are the only one that can step up and work to get those changes made.

It only takes willpower to give ourselves permission to make the experience.

Until next time~ Traci

Hey Y’all!

Riding season is almost over, harvest is going on and another year slips away. Last month was the 10th anniversary of the September 11terrorist attacks on the USA. Let’s take time to put into perspective what is most dear to us as a group and as individuals. I still rememberwhere I was when the attacks occurred, do you? Now as the riding season comes to an end we should be thankful that we still have sev-eral freedoms that we enjoy. We now have to be vigilant in watching our state and federal Representatives and Senators to ensure thatthey vote the way we want them to. Write your Representatives and Senators and let them know your wishes.

Don’t forget to start planning your costume for Halloween! Be sure to have plenty of treats for the trick or treaters, especially the oneswith bikes. I am sure that they will have plenty of tricks up their sleeves if they think they didn’t get enough treats. My other half says to besure to watch your partners when they get into the homemade Apple Pie, it really causes issues with judgment and balance!

Ride safe and be sure to watch out for those cages ‘cause you know they don’t always watch out for us!

Hello fellow bikers! Hope everyone had a great time at the 2011 State Rally and a safe ride home. The summer of 2011 is almost overand our bike riding season is coming to an end. But more great memories are still being made every weekend! I’d like to start out thismonth by taking a moment to say thank you to everyone for promoting this year’s Rally. South Central members, you always comethrough when asked, you not only pushed the advance tickets and Rally raffle tickets, you went out and got sponsorships, pulled the shiftswe signed up for, and showed everyone what the South Central family is all about. Also a big thank you goes to everyone who made andsold the Jell-O and Pudding shots for Motorcycle PAC. Come to the next meeting to find out the final total, it was very impressive.

The South Central Toys for Tots Fall Dance is being held in November. We need all Chapter members to go out and get at least one ormore silent auction item. We also need everyone to hang up posters. Don’t leave it to the Committee to do all the work, this is a Chapterfunction.

As a “Chapter” we have been having lots of fun this summer by attending bike runs, rides, fundraisers, rallies, and attending other Chap-ter’s events. Come to a Chapter meeting if you haven’t attended for a while and find out what’s going on!! We’d love to see you! Checkyour Road Noise events listing and join in the fun. Going to other Chapter’s meetings and fundraisers is a blast. If you would like to viewthe last Chapter meeting minutes, see the new pictures, or find out what we are doing as a Chapter, log on to our website or look us up onFacebook and check it out! If you want a reminder on what the Chapter is up to, where we’re going and when the meetings are, send the“Pres” your email address at [email protected] and he will be glad to send you reminders on all Chapter events and rides.

Till next month, Ride Safe and Ride Free!

As I write this, our Fallen Friends Memorial Ride is still going on. We had excellent weather, a great turnout, and lots of money was raisedfor Beyond the Yellow Ribbon of Watonwan County. It is wonderful to see all the people who turned out to support this great charity, whichhonors our servicemen and their families. Our first live auction was a great success and I hope we do it again next year. Thank you to allof you who donated an item and all of you who bid on these great items. A big thank you goes out to Cowboy’s Southern Grilling for thewonderful supper when we returned from the run. It was delicious as always.

Fall is fast approaching and I hear the fall colors are to be a sight. Get out there and enjoy those bikes because winter is fast approachingand they will soon be in storage. I hope to see everyone at our Halloween party this year. Of course costumes are always recommendedbut not mandatory!!!

Well, I have to get back and see how many tires get burned off this year!!!

See ya, Kelly

SOUTHEAST DISTRICT DIRECTORTONY CORPORAN (507) [email protected]

Sorry I haven't been making it to meetings, had a lot of family illness the last few months. Well, I hope everyone had as much fun as I didat the rally. If you didn't go you missed a good time. I would like feed back from the chapters in the South East District on where youwould like to hold district meetings. There will not be one before the October B.O.D. as I did not get to meetings and discuss it. So let meknow if you want it in the same place in Owatonna or somewhere else or if you would like it to change every time. Start making plans forBikerday. It’s never to early and try to figure out how to get more people there and bring it up at your next meeting. Remember there areno stupid ideas only unspoken ones. Summer’s almost over so get out and ride to visit other chapters or events.

See you on the road, TONY

Upcoming events:Bikerday at the Capitol, February 8th

As you read this we will already be into October and hopefully the weather is still good to get out and ride and enjoy the fall colors. Fromthe people that I talked to that went to the State Rally in Litchfield, it was a good time. As you can see by the upcoming events Bikerday atthe Capitol is set for February 8th, So mark it on your calendar and plan to attend. It is a very important day to let our legislators knowhow we feel.

Now, let’s see how many people read the Road Noise last month. I had stated that a friend of mine Scot Braun had been run over by adeer. Well the information I got was a little off. Guess I need to get my hearing checked. It was Scott Lenard that was hit by the deer whileriding his motorcycle. Sounds like Scott Braun gave some people the lost deer in the headlight look when they asked how he was doing.

Other than that I don't have much more to ramble on with.

Until next month.

Steve

Upcoming Events:October Board of Directors Meeting on the 15th, Crookston

Helloooooo Flatlanders!

Well fall has set in and I, for one, love it. This is the best time of year for riding bike to me. The fall colors, the cool crisp air rushing by asyou wind down that favorite little twisty road of yours that you have to fit in just one last time. It gives you time to reflect on the season’sbike trips, friends made and friends you’ve ridden with. To look back and say, did I ride all that I could this year? Maybe yes maybe no, allthat counts is time in the saddle. It also gives you time to look ahead and think, what can I do as a freedom fighter for all of Minnesota'smotorcyclist this winter. With winter coming on it’s time to look ahead and discuss what’s really important in the motorcycle safety andrights world. So get to your chapter meetings, discuss up coming events and fundraisers that all help to support the fight for the rights andsafety of Minnesota motorcyclists. When you signed up for A.B.A.T.E. you made that choice to become a freedom fighter. I am proud ofyou all for making that choice. Now get out and get that last bit of wind in your face before old man winter comes a knocken!

MISSISSIPPI VALLEYNext meeting:October 16th, Crossroads Bar & Grill in Randolph, 11:00 am

Mississippi Valley was visited by State Coordinator Mack Backlund and State Treasurer Mitch Backlund at our August meeting. We trulyappreciate the opportunity to discuss with them what Chapters can do to make sure that the 2012 Bikerday at the Capitol is a successand to explore what we can do to support legislative efforts at the State and Federal level. Thanks Mack and Mitch.

The weather finally cooperated so that we were finally able to deliver Buddy Bears to the Red Wing and Winona Fire Departments afterour August meeting. We dodged a few showers but it was a great day for a ride down the river. Both departments were very pleased toaccept our donation and assured us that the bears will be put to good use. They liked the size of this year's bears too. Small enough tomake it easy for them to store on the rigs but big enough to provide some comfort.

Hopefully the great weather we are having as I write this article will continue into the fall and we'll all still be riding when this issue of RoadNoise comes out!

TRI-COUNTYNext meeting:October 4th, November 1st and December 6th, Turtles Bar in Shakopee, 7:00 pm

Current Members: 219... yay...

Thanks to Frank and Vicki Ernst for hosting our September meeting. We had food catered by the PAC committee and, therefore, voted todonate $200 to PAC. Thanks. And it was good!

Also, note our remaining fall and winter meetings will resume at the Turtles Bar in Shakopee, 7:00 pm. Our chapter also voted on the pro-posal brought forth by Lynn as a result of a discussion held at the July B.O.D. which entailed the Enhanced Penalties Bill. We voted tocontinue to pursue this bill. This involves each and every one of us to write letters to our elected officials, increase the attendance perchapter to Bikerday which is February 8th (get your vacation day in for that already), and to meet face to face with our elected officials andlet them know our opinions!

Thanks to all who attended the Harley Heaven ride on August 20th. We had over 209 participants and Tri-County was given a check for$1320 with the other half going to Allina Hospice Palliative Care. Also, thanks to all who attended the Tri-County Fundraiser and StateRally and Adopt a Highway pickup. This is how we make money and friends and good times...not necessarily in that order! These monieswill allow us to contribute to worthy causes, which hopefully will result in good things for us bikers! Always look through the Road Noisefor further information on things happening in the courts and the streets!

BIKER JOKE:

A mechanic was removing a cylinder head from the motor of a HD motorcycle when he spotted a well-known heart surgeon in the shop. The surgeon was waiting for the service manager to take a look at his bike. The mechanic shouted across the room,"Hey Doc, can I askyou a question?" The surgeon, a bit surprised, walked over to the mechanic working on the motorcycle. The mechanic straightened up,wiped his hands on a rag, and asked,"So Doc, look at this engine. I open its "heart", take valves out, fix ‘em, put ‘em back in and whenI'm finished, it works just like new. So how come I get such a measly salary and you get the really big bucks when you and I are doing ba-sically the same kind of work?". The surgeon paused, smiled, and leaned over, and said, "Try doing it with the engine running".

‘till next time...ger

Motorcycle Riders Foundation;!)!%-#-1&7<)/)2')2-'74/-)7!%742-)2!(:5(/1#'2' A number of inaccuracies and inconsistencies have been uncovered in examining data related to motorcycle crashes, injuries and fatalities. If the information is incorrect it can only lead to theories and conclusions that are also incor-rect or, at the very least, suspect.

<!1,)2!( Since much of the data is obviously flawed and most of the conclusions are therefore speculative at best, the only true solutions to motorcycle safety are proactive measures which prevent a collision from occurring at all rather than reactive steps that may offer some level of injury mitigation only after a crash has already taken place. Rider education that prepares the motorcyclist to interact with other roadway users by learning and practicing the skills necessary for hazard avoidance and developing a strategy to deal with real world traffic is the primary component of a comprehensive motorcycle safety plan. Additionally, educating all motor vehicle operators to be alert and free of impairment as they share the road with others is critical in deterring crashes caused by inattention.

6%/2(2(=7/(+75>/%&(&''7/%&7)?&7@&#'A

Examples of how the motorcycling community works to address and implement these measures are as follows:Motorcycle Riders Foundation, 236 Massachusetts Ave. NE, Suite 510, Washington, DC 20002-4980, 202-546-0983, www.mrf.org

!""#$%&'())!)"* When errors, omissions or inaccuracies are discovered in reports or statistics, it calls into ques-tion the integrity of results. Additionally, small numbers can be easily skewed by slight or seemingly insignificant variations. Furthermore, numbers may be exploited if uncharacteristic highs or lows are used as a baseline. None of these discoveries are intended to argue against helmet use, but rather to demonstrate that suggesting a helmet law is not the solution to motorcycle safety. Individual states need to maintain the ability to determine what measures best address the needs and desires of their residents as suggested in the National Agenda for Motorcycle Safety (NAMS)

+,-.'Comparison of studies is complicated due to varying criteria, wherein one report references riders, it is unclear if that includes passengers or specifically operators. Other papers may refer to the numbers of persons, crashes or vehicles intermittently. This can be quite confusing as the numbers are usually very close and are frequently compared in error.

+,-. A Minnesota motorcyclist survived a crash only to be struck by a car while standing on the road attempting to flag down a motorist for assistance. This was subsequently counted as a motorcycle fatality.

+,-.'A Pennsylvania taxi driver, with multiple suspensions, was responsible for about two percent of the state’s total motorcycle fatalities when he caused a crash with three motorcycles and killed five helmeted riders in a single incident. +,-.'Motorcycle fatalities dropped by 10% in 2009 and preliminary reports indicate that 2010 numbers will be further reduced by at least 2%. The Motorcycle Industry Council advises that sales of replacement tires were up by 6.1% in 2010, suggesting an increase in motorcycle usage. A decrease in fatalities despite an increase in exposure would suggest that motorcycle safety and awareness programs, specifically rider education courses, have been successful. +,-.'The National Transportation Safety Board has investigated over 120,000 airplane incidents, over 60,000 surface trans-portation incidents, and just 6 individual motorcycle incidents in their entire 44 year history — Apparently enough investigation to warrant adding mandatory helmet laws for motorcyclists on their “top ten most wanted list”. +,-.'According to preliminary data from the Governors Highway Safety Association, states that have a mandatory adult helmet law had six fewer fatalities in 2010 than in 2009, while free choice states saw a reduction of 74. The state with the single largest decline in fatalities (Texas -60) is a choice state and a state which requires helmets on all riders tied for the greatest increase (New York +24).

+,-.'FARS continues to include “mopeds” in motorcycle crash statistics despite the fact that most states do not require registration of these vehicles. This practice skews the most respected method of measuring the effectiveness of motorcycle safety programs, which is the ratio of accidents, injuries and fatalities per 10,000 registrations. 11NR27 - MRF News Release - TEA Extension

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE16 September 2011

Contact: Jeff Hennie, Vice President of Government Relations and Public Affairs

TEA Extension

The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) has learned that, with current authorizations set toexpire in the next couple of weeks, the U.S. Congress passed legislation that would authorizesurface transportation programs for several more months.

By voice vote, the House passed a bill (HR 2887) that would extend surface transportationprograms through March 31, 2012. The bill also would extend certain highway-related taxes, including the gas tax, which is set to expire on September 30 under the most recent long-termsurface transportation reauthorization. The Senate also passed the extension late on Thursday, September 15. This bill has been the vehicle for numerous motorcycle-relatedlaws. HR 2887 is expected to be signed into law very soon.

"The extension keeps the current motorcycle awareness and education grants flowing. So farthe government has returned $49 million dollars to the motorcycle riders in the country; I callthat a good start," said Jeff Hennie, MRF Vice President of Government Relations.

The bill, which should be the most bipartisan bill in the entire Congress, has been stymied fora number of legislative and political reasons – so much so that is now linked to the FederalAviation Administration funding bill which is on its 22nd extension going back to 2007.

House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman John Mica (R-FL) said theshort extension represented a "bipartisan, bicameral agreement to move forward," but warnedthat it should not be a "temporary Band-Aid."

As always, the MRF will keep you updated on this issue and every other issue affecting motorcyclists in this country.

BIKER'S PRAYER

Biker angel be my guide

As I climb upon my scoot to ride

Let your halo light the way

And keep me safe from harm today

Let your wings provide me wind and air

And send it cursing through my hair

Find me a peaceful sunny place

And let it shine upon my face

Keep the clouds and rain at bay

And keep me dry throughout the day

Watch over the brothers and sisters who ride with me

Keep my wheels upon the ground

So I'll return here safe and sound

But should disaster be my fate

Guide me through Heaven's gate

If I must join my fallen brethren

Please show me the way to biker heaven
