While it may be a teacher’s “job” to educate, learning is constant and happens everyday, everywhere. Each of us has the opportunity to educate our youth and all learners. Workforce development, especially the growth and maturation of our youth into productive and engaged citizens, is critical to a community’s success. To that end, the Allegany County Chamber of Commerce and its Education Committee create and participate in oppor- tunities contributing to the advancement of our youth and workforce throughout the year. On March 14 th the Allegany County Chamber graduated its first class of Leader- ship Allegany! Rising students. Modeled after the successful Leadership Allegany! program, Leadership Allegany! Rising provides the opportunity for high school juniors to gain the knowledge and motiva- tion to effect positive change within the region. e Chamber also participates in Achievement Counts, Focus on the Future, the Allegany County Student Salute Pro- gram, the Drug Prevention Club Commit- tee, Mock Interviews, A.C.E.S., Allegany County Library’s Guys Read, the Local Advisory Committee for Career and Tech- nical Education, the Workforce Develop- ment Board, the Western Maryland IT Center of Excellence and P-Tech. Member Profile: The Allegany County Historical Society 218 Washington Street Cumberland, MD 21502 301-777-8678 – Gordon Roberts House 2017 marked 80 years since the creation of the Allegany County Historical Society. Since 1937 they have worked to preserve and promote local history through a variety of avenues... Today this 501 c 3 non-profit organization is driven to collect stories, give back to the community and share Western Maryland’s rich history through three museums, their special collections, educational series in schools and local museums, discovery, and partnerships. Each museum site, event and project the Allegany County Historical Society undertakes is fueled by incredible volunteers and staff. They look forward to being a part of your story, as they grow and reboot their story.

The Gordon-Roberts House Experience an historic house museum that was once home to a congressman and C & O Canal president, a musician and his family, farmers, servants, friends of Generals and more. This three story red-brick home was built shortly after the end of the American Civil War and has stories to share with you. The space is utilized for living history experiences, weddings and private events.

F. Brooke Whiting House & CollectionConstructed in 1911, the bungalow located at 632 Washington Street houses rare books, period furnishings and original artworks from the world over. Union Grove One Room SchoolhouseIn 1901, the Union Grove One Room School was built to replace the Wilson Academy. A focal point of the surrounding commu-nity, the Union Grove schoolhouse served children in the Mason and Smouses Mill

road territory, acted as a meeting house and festival grounds. In 2007 the local 4 H club donated Union Grove schoolhouse to the Historical Society and since that time, it has been completely restored. Today the schoolhouse is the last un-altered schoolhouse in Allegany County and is open May – October for immersive student field trips, a day long Family Day each summer and is available for family open houses and special events. The Chamber’s Second Annual Golf Outing will be held on Friday, April 27th at the Cumberland Country Club with a shotgun start at 9:00 am.This event is a fun opportunity to enjoy a day on the links kicking off the golf season while networking and connecting with business friends and colleagues. The Allegany County Chamber of Commerce will present a Legislative Wrap-Up Breakfast on Friday, April 20, 2018 at the Cumberland Country Club, Cumberland, Maryland beginning at 7:30 am. The Western Maryland Delegation will provide a recap of business legislation and the issues of the 2018 Legislative Session in Annapolis. The session review will consist of comments by Senator George Edwards, Delegate Wendell Beitzel, Delegate Jason Buckel, and Delegate Michael McKay, followed by a question and answer period. The cost to attend (which includes a buffet breakfast) is $20.00 for Chamber members and $30.00 for non-members.
