PASTOR DANP O F F E n B E r G E r

Animate....draw yourself into God’s story.

This has been the theme of our worship and learning together this fall, and continues this winter and into spring. It was chosen intentionally to help everyone connect more intimately and find their way into God’s story. I am hopeful we are all finding identity, meaning and purpose for our lives as we discover the complexity of and truth in “drawing ourselves into God’s story.”

Stories have unique power in our lives. I would like to share a passage from Henri Nouwen’s book The Living Reminder that illustrates this truth.

“One of the remarkable qualities of the story is that it creates space. We can dwell in a story, walk around, find our own place. The story confronts but does not oppress; the story inspires but does not manipulate. The story invites us to an encounter, a dialog, a mutual sharing.

A story that guides is a story that opens a door and offers us space in which to search and boundaries to help us find what we seek, but it does not tell us what to do or how to do it. The story brings us into touch with the vision and so guides us. Elie Wiesel writes, ‘God made people because God loves stories.’ As long as we have stories to tell to each other there is hope. As long as we can remind each other of the lives of men and women in whom the love of God becomes manifest, there is reason to move forward to new land in which new stories are hidden.”

As followers of Jesus, we are people of the story, God’s story, which is the story of God’s love of creation and communion with people. We remember this story with all of humanity, with people of faith and grace of all generations, places and time. To forget our story would be to forget who we are.

Come to worship regularly in 2013, where we remember and rehearse the story, and where we imagine how the story will live through and beyond our lives. Use your Animate resources each week to make your home a part of the story, and where you can become a storyteller. Join in an Animate faith group for an in-home discussion and community group this winter and spring. Visit Trinity’s website at www.trinitylc.org for more information.

Let us be a community of the story, and become people who move in our time with great courage, confidence and compassion, united in God’s story for all people.

MISSION

CAREM i n i S t r i E S

As I’ve been thinking about 2013 and all that I want to do, I believe that God has called my attention to more than a few words of wisdom. In doing so, God has reminded me that even more important than the doing is being.

And from the site, afriendofhumanity.com, I share this poem with you.

Be Someone

Be someone who listens, and you will be heard.

Be someone who cares, and you will be loved.

Be someone who gives, and you will be blessed.

Be someone who comforts, and you will know peace.

Be someone who genuinely seeks to understand,

and you will be wise.

Be someone kind, someone considerate,

and you will be admired.

Be someone who values truth, and you will be respected.

Be someone who takes action, and you will move life forward.

Be someone who lifts others higher, and your life will be rich.

Be someone filled with gratitude, and there will be no end to

the things for which you’ll be thankful.

Be someone who lives with joy, with purpose,

as your own light brightly shines.

Be, in every moment, the special someone

you are truly meant to be.God bless you now and in the year to come!

Pastor Candee

Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor is a neuroanatomist who has dedicated her career to the study of severe mental illnesses. In a TED talk, she describes the differences between the right and left hemispheres of the brain and then shares her own experience of having suffered a massive left-sided brain hemorrhage. Through that experience (an eight-year recovery process), Dr. Taylor came to realize not only the significance but the choice we have in consciously living out of the right hemispheres of our brains where the circuitry of deep inner peace runs deep. The more peace we feel, “the more peace we project into the world and the more peaceful our planet will be.” (Visit ted.com and search for “Jill Bolte Taylor’s powerful stroke of insight” to watch this amazing video.)

St. Olaf ChoirSat., Feb. 16, 7:30 p.m.

For the St. Olaf Choir and Conductor Anton Armstrong, national tours are a long-standing winter tradition, and in early 2013 they will present 11 concerts on the West Coast starting at Seattle’s Benaroya Hall, followed by concerts in Oregon, California and Arizona, including a performance at Trinity! Founded 101 years ago at St. Olaf College by F. Melius Christiansen, the St. Olaf Choir is internationally recognized as a creative force behind America’s a cappella choral tradition, and has set a high standard for choral music performance. The ensemble’s 2013 tour features an eclectic program of sacred and secular masterpieces past and present, as well as dynamic music with a broad global perspective. Violinist Charles Gray, St. Olaf College Professor of Music, will travel with the choir, performing in several works for choir, violin and piano.

The past three years the St. Olaf Choir’s centennial celebration has featured new choral commissions. Among the new compositions on this tour is The World Made New: Eleanor Roosevelt’s Evening Prayer by Abbie Betinis, a young American composer who studied composition at St. Olaf. This work has a Trinity connection also; it was commissioned by Sonia Esch and her siblings in memory of their mother.

Two of Trinity’s young members are a part of the choir, Solveig Neseth, soprano and Will Esch, bass.

Tickets will be available at the door or at the St. Olaf Choir website at www.stolaftickets.com

In addition to frequent home concerts, the band tours nationally each year and internationally every few years, including a recent tour of Norway. The ensemble completed its fourth tour of Norway in May 2007 and is scheduled to tour internationally again in May 2012.

LIVES

Grateful

As stewards, we seek to understand the impact of social systems and structures. We align our decisions and actions to work toward universal peace and justice.

What exactly is justice?

According to the dictionary: moral rightness; equity; honor; fairness; due reward or treatment

I propose that justice includes basic human rights – food, water, shelter, safety and resources sufficient to meet daily needs.

I suspect that most of us haven’t thought of promoting justice as a component of a life of stewardship. Yet as stewards, we are caretakers of all that God has created. Today I will simply share some questions, thoughts and resources on the complex subject of justice, with the hope that it will spark further thought, learning, conversation and action.

“One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” (Pledge of Allegiance)

“We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, … and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.” (preamble to the Constitution)

As a country, we have spent over 200 years trying to define and refine what justice is, and carry out those beliefs in our actions. At the time our founders wrote the words above, it appears they had a different understanding of “all” than we have today. Is justice a value system?

Nearly all of us live in warm houses, dress in warm clothes, and have plenty of food for three meals a day and more. When we turn on one of the many faucets in our home or place of work, we are assured to have clean, safe water to drink or wash. Is it justice that we live in this environment? Is it justice that others will never live in an environment like ours? Does God love us more? Do we

deserve more of God’s blessings? Are less wealthy people/countries somehow less blessed? Are my kids more entitled to an education than the children of Mwatasi? Is my dog more entitled to a healthy life than children in sub-Saharan Africa?

Blessings or privileges? is the title of an article in the April 2011 edition of The Lutheran. It made the point that we have confused God’s blessings with our privileges. The opportunity to own material things is ours as a result of our economic privilege. Privilege is a result of social construction, not divine providence. We are citizens of a particularly wealthy nation. When we equate God’s blessing with material things, it can give rise to an attitude that we are an exceptional country that is somehow more blessed and better than the rest of the world because we are materially privileged. Perhaps we aren’t necessarily exceptional – just privileged. (Email me if you’d like to read the entire article.)

In closing, I share the best definition of justice that I’ve seen, and a call to action from 92-year-old June Kjome, a truly vibrant steward and justice advocate from LaCrosse, WI.

“Justice – it’s not just us! We are the people we have been waiting for.”

• 40%increasedtheirGivingPlanfromlastyear• 50%remainedthesame• 10%reducedThe financial health of our congregation is an expression of our faith, gratitude, and the stewardship of our money. As the stewards who have gone before us, may we all embrace the great privilege and responsibility of being vibrant stewards of God’s abundance.Approximately75%ofTrinityhouseholdshavenotyetcommunicated their 2013 Giving Plan to Trinity.

If you have not yet completed a Giving Plan, we encourage you to do so now. Your promise to give allows Trinity to plan for and fund ministry for the year ahead.

What is a Giving Plan? A Giving Plan is a spiritual discipline and a practical tool that confirms a person’s plan and promise for giving. For Trinity it is a management tool that assures the staff, facility, and materials necessary to support ministry will be funded. Collective giving plans affirm that together we desire to bring forth the world that God has imagined today and in the future.

Who should complete a 2013 Giving Plan? Everyone who is grateful for the difference Trinity makes in their life, in the community and throughout the world should complete a 2013 Giving Plan. If you share Trinity’s mission to offer the love of God to everyone, to call people into a closer transforming relationship with Jesus, and to serve our neighbors in the world, then you should complete a 2013 Giving Plan. (NOTE: Your Giving Plan does not automatically renew each year. Please renew annually as you grow in the grace of giving.)

Why should I complete a 2013 Giving Plan? When our giving is based on what might be left at the end of the week or month, we will never feel generous or satisfied. Intentional first-fruits financial stewardship puts God first. Making a Giving Plan is a healthy expression of all that we care about and builds deeper faith and trust in God.

How do I complete a 2013 Giving Plan? Visit us online at www.trinitylc.org for an easy link on our homepage, or fill out a card found in the pews in the Worship Center or the Church Office.

8 february 2013 • trinity.today.

We engage in spiritual practices to develop our relationship with God. Growing that relationship has some benefits. In the Bible the benefits of practice are referred to as, “The Fruit of the Spirit.” Today, people who practice and scientific studies have shown that spiritual practice brings:

• Innerpeace •Increasedenergy• Betterlifebalance •Morelifepurposeandmeaning• Emotionalresiliency •Greaterabilitytoseethingsinadifferentlight• Built-insupporttohelpmakedesiredlifechanges

Understanding your unique design, how God has created you, can help you find your natural spiritual practices. Perhaps you are one of the many who were told that you had to do a certain practice (let’s say, attend worship every week) to be a Christian or that if you engaged in too much of a certain practice (let’s say, questioning) that you were not faithful. There are many spiritual practices, or ways of connecting to God. One practice is not better than another, they are simply different branches on the tree. Your unique design points to possible ways you can find practices that work well for you.

Once you’ve established your natural practices and want to add some “stretch” to your spiritual growth, you may consider adding additional practices that offer breadth & depth to your connection to God. These practices can open you up to new levels of spiritual growth and transformation.

Happy New Year

I always wonder about the people that track such details of life. Who are they? How do

they notice bits of information like this? I don’t believe that I would catch

things like this. Then I paused, and wondered about what other interesting details I might be missing? Then again what details or interesting facts do I know that I should share? My thoughts went directly to the Mission Ministries that are taking place here at Trinity, and I thought I would highlight two bits of information.

In the domestic side of missions, November 14, 2013 is a special date. Twenty-five years ago, in November of 1988, the first Trinity Loaves & Fishes crew, led by Jeff and Kristie Anderson, served a meal in the Frogtown neighborhood of St. Paul. Since then, scores of volunteers have served over 10,000 meals. New volunteers are always welcome to cook, serve, and clean. While the January service opportunity has come and gone; the five remaining opportunities for 2013 are: March 14, May 9, July 11, Sept. 12, & Nov. 14.

Please join me in saying thank you to Jeff & Kristie, and Russ Savstrom who has joined the leadership team, for their dedication to this ministry through your gift of time or financial contributions to Trinity’s Loaves & Fishes Ministry.

If you are interested in helping with the cooking team (meets at Faith Lutheran at 3 p.m.) please contact Russ at 329-1306. For any other questions about Loaves & Fishes please call Jeff at 439-9133.

On the global side, for more than two decades Trinity has strongly supported education efforts in Tanzania by providing both educational facilities and scholarships. Once again, in 2013, Trinity has committed to sponsor 20 students through our companion congregation partners in the village of Mwatasi. A full scholarship is $400 per student, but donations of any amount are gratefully accepted and pooled together to support our students. Besides helping with the annual school fees, your scholarship also helps to provide clean water and food for three meals each day at the school. While our commitment is required February 1, we gratefully accept donations to the Education & Scholarship fund throughout the year.

Our sponsored students at the Bomalangombe Secondary School are dedicated to working hard on their studies and donating their efforts to continue building the school for the students that will follow in their footsteps. Tremendous progress has been made at the school over the past few years, and the future holds a variety of opportunities. Through our partnership we are helping to improve the lives of thousands of children over the coming generations.

These are just two of the many life- changing facts within the Mission Ministries happening here at Trinity. Please visit the Trinity website at www.trinitylc.org for information on how you can partake and support Trinity’s mission opportunities. There is also information on the website about how you can join the Trinity Mission Alumni Association and begin to share your mission experiences.

Peace, Tom Thiets

Welcome to the new year of 2013. One interesting fact that I heard as I hung up a new calendar was that this is the first year since 1987 that contains four different digits. Starting in 1988 there has been a repeating number every year until 2013.

No experience necessary and no long commitments, just a morning or two passing out bulletins and the offering plate. If there is a tug on your heart to serve, this may be a wonderful fit for you and a wonderful gift to Trinity. Contact Zanny Johnson at ext. 130 or [email protected].

Be a Trinity knitterFourth Thursday/month 10 a.m.-noon Imagine the comforting “hug” of a prayer shawl, the warmth of a knit hat on a cold night, or the joy of preparing for the baptism of a new baby with a special blanket. You can contribute to all of these and more! Knitting does not require large blocks of time and can be done at your home whenever you have time. We have an ongoing need for prayer shawls, baby blankets, scarves and hats. Contact Lois Walton at 439-6948 for information.

Update

Our Bible story for the month of January will be from John 6:1-14, where Jesus feeds the 5000. We will be learning through

video, Bible games, art and science workshops. God’s

abundance can be experienced in so many ways.

Register for Summer & Fall 2013 nowPlans are well underway for the 2013-2014 school year. Each year we try to meet the needs of families by adjusting class schedules and offerings. The updated schedules and tuition rates are on the LADC website at www.ladcfamilies.org. Families may also register or schedule an on-site tour by calling the LADC Main Office at 762-7884. Registration is now open to the public. LADC is currently partnered with seven area churches in the White Bear Lake, Maplewood, Mahtomedi, Stillwater and Forest Lake communities. Five locations are Nationally Accredited through the NAEYC, with a sixth currently in candidacy. LADC has been greatly blessed by our church partnerships! Thank you for your love and support.

MISSION

Almost 70 student missionaries have stepped up and accepted the call to action this year! We will be taking approximately 90 student and adult missionaries to Chuburna, Mexico in March. However, our student missionaries are in need of your partnership – prayer and financial – to help them make this experience possible. Students will be looking for sponsorship partners to raise the funds necessary to be a part of this transformational trip; watch for them in their bright yellow t-shirts before and after worship services! You can also sponsor a missionary online at www.trinitylc.org. Contact Cory Jones at ext. 144 or [email protected] with any questions or concerns.

Confirmation UpdateEach Confirmation small group is asked to participate in one service project within the walls of Trinity, and one mission project outside the walls of Trinity per year. Two groups in particular have taken this service project component above and beyond expectations. Marilyn Johnson and Joel Lombard’s eighth-grade young men’s group led a successful coat drive over the month of December, collecting coats, hats, and mittens for people in the St. Paul area. Also, Jolene Patterson and Therese Stoebner’s eighth-grade young women’s group has a comprehensive service plan for the entire year to focus on a different cause each month. Last month’s cause was helping a family with gas money because their young daughter is going through chemo treatments. Thanks to these and all Confirmation groups serving in God’s name!

Hey sr. high students, if you would like to be a part of a small group that you can journey together through life and faith, contact Cory Jones at ext. 144 or [email protected]. Each J-Group will have a fun and caring adult leader that will walk alongside of you as you journey. Your J-Group can meet whenever and wherever you decide! Bible studies and other faith guides will be provided for meaningful faith discussions. Fun and caring adults: If you would like to be a J-Group leader, please contact Cory at [email protected] or ext. 144. Senior High Ministry is always looking for adults (21+) to be a part of students lives!
