Note from the Editor The warm weather seems to have finally arrived to stay, though this has certainly been a cool and wet start of spring.
Enrollment of all spring courses has been well attended; some students had to be turned away for Basic Rock School (BRS). If we’d had one more senior instructor with an assistant we probably could have fit them in. The Snow School and Backcamping School were similarly well attended. I had the good fortune to assist with one of the BRS sections, which is always a good review. We had good weather for the most part, but our students will have real bragging rights, because it snowed and hailed on them on their first multi-pitch climb! Fortunately, the weather cleared up later that day.
The big news for the club, of course, is
Update on CMC Member on Everest
Val Hovland and Monty Smith continue their guided Everest attempt. As of presstime, their expedition with IMG (International Mountain Guides), was approaching a summit attempt, up to ad-vance camp 4. Monty reports some lung problems hampering his attempt, but Val seems to be marching to the summit.

Crossing the Patagonian Ice Cap in 12 Easy StepsA BCMC Program If you’ve ever dreamed of crossing the Polar Ice Caps or climbing a remote peak, this multi-sensory, interactive and hilarious slideshow is for you. Join us for this special program, as Benjamin Gorelick of the Patagonia Mountaineer-ing School in Chile took a group of six mountaineering novices across the Pa-tagonian Ice Cap, the third largest in the world. This presentation details the trials and tribulations of their expedition, from start to finish. Benjamin has worked as a professional mountaineering guide for nine years. His guiding and climbing career has taken him all over the world. Join us in the clubroom on Friday, June 6th, starting at 7 pm.
The CMC Board of Directors is pleased to announce the search for an Executive Director concluded successfully late last week. Please welcome Katie Blackett to the CMC Family. Katie is thrilled to accept our offer of employment at the Colorado Mountain Club. She begins on June 2, 2008. Katie is currently employed at NITA as the CFO. In addition to the operations financial responsibility, Katie manages NITA’s IT team. NITA expressed their support for Katie accepting our offer with the comment that they really are sure how they will replace her. She joins CMC with an incredible passion for our mission and love of the Southern Rock-ies. We will communicate Katie’s full bio to the membership thru e-newsletters, Trail and Timberline and your group newslet-ters. I will suggest to Katie that she plan to meet all the groups across the state as soon as possible. Please stop by the American Mountaineering Center and introduce when you are in the Denver metro area.

[Editor’s Note: a ful report on new executive director will appear in the July Compass]
New ED Hired
the new CMC executive director. We will all be curious as to Ms. Blackett’s background, and her vision for the club. You might be interested to know that she is a member of the CMC through the Boulder Group.

New Compass Editor NeededThe search is on for a new editor for the Compass. This could be your chance at an exciting, challenging and stimulating opportunity to learn valuable journalistic skills “on the job” in a position that is central to the information clearinghouse for the Boulder CMC. Applicants should have some experience with the Club, the responsibility to deliver a monthly newsletter, and a desire to help the Club grow; some computer acumen helpful. If interested, please send an email to [email protected].
Chair’s Report
The following are the highlights of activities in the Boulder Group over the last month:
• The state office started a new mem-bership renewal effort, as proposed by the Boulder Group. They sent a renewal reminder email to members whose mem-berships had already expired and to those whose memberships were to expire in 60 days. Some members renewed online based on this initial email. If neces-sary, the state office followed up with a renewal reminder email to those whose memberships were to expire in 30 days. After this, if members had not renewed online, then the state postal mailed the renewal forms. As soon as the state office started this effort, the Boulder Group membership increased by around 20 members. An added benefit is that there’s both printing and mailing cost savings when members renew online. Many thanks to the members who have renewed and to those who have renewed online!
• Starting with the June Compass, your membership renewal date will be printed on the mailing label. This is something that we had done for years and years with the Compass and now we’re going back to it. Check your mail-ing label for your membership expiration date.
• Peter Gowen continues to work with the US Forest Service to revamp the use permit for the Arestua and Brainard Cabins. The use permit will be renewed starting next year.
• Tom Wilson had a good turn-out
Cabins Committee Chair Needed
The search is on for a volunteer to head up the Cabins Committee, which maintains the crown jewel of the Club’s assets, the Brainard Lake Cabin. After many years of vaunted service, Otto Verdoner has decided it is time for him to relinquish this cherished role. While there are several volunteers on the Cab-ins Committee filling necessary duties in the interim, a new chair of the committee is still needed. Available time, ability to delegate responsibility and leadership
ability are the qualities needed in the potential candidate more than experience with the cabin per se. If you, or someone you know, may be interested, please send email to [email protected].
Any many thanks again to Otto for his generous service over the years...
June Monthly Program: Hik-ing the Fjords of Norway
Wednesday, 6/11, 7pm: Join us in the clubroom for a presentation by Ann Stevens. She’ll talk about hiking on the Sognefjord ( the longest and deepest in the world); the Hardanger Fjord ( many national traditions preserved in this area) and Sorfjord from the coastal town of Bergen. The presentation will also in-clude hiking into some of the Norwegian National Parks, sampling their food and learning about Norwegian customs.
for his kick-off meeting of the “Flat-iron Classics – The Top Ten Climbs”. Gerry Roach, the book author, attended and shared information on his revised edition, to be published soon by the CMC Press. There seems to be plenty of excitement about these climbs. See the online Activity Schedule for the upcom-ing climbs.
• Thanks for Jean Aschenbrenner on her informative and fun slide show on adventuring in Corsica.
Respectfully submitted,Brenda LeachBoulder Group Chair
On the technical front, the web devel-opment team is making progress on a website makeover. We are very fortunate to have some talented volunteers on our team.
As you can see in the Chair’s Report, your June issue is supposed to have your membership expiration date printed on the mailing label. This was a request of the Boulder Council to the state office (I’ll spare you the technical details), which we hope will help keep member-ships from lapsing. If you ever have any questions about your Compass or e-Compass delivery, please do not hesitate to email me at [email protected]. We’re always interested in any ideas you might have for improving how things are done in the Club – we’re all volunteers here!

From the Outings Chair:Attention Trip Leaders-Important Trip Submission Request
To all trip leaders: big thanks for all the trips! I would personally like to thank all the leaders who have so generously submitted trips for the current quarter. It is a big time committment and I appreci-ate your gift of volunteering. It is great to see so many more trips happening. Let’s keep the trend going! Believe it or not it is time to already start thinking about the late summer, fall season. (see below). The Trail and Timberline Activity Sched-ule now comes out quarterly so it sneaks up on us rather quickly. Please note the following important policy changes for trip sign-up times: First: the sign-up period for all trips has been changed to be no more than 4 weeks in advance and no later than 3 days before a trip. (The old policy was two weeks for rock climbs and four weeks for all other trips). We ask all leaders and members to try and adhere to this policy for the sake of fairness and clarity for all. Second: the Trail and Timberline Activity Schedule which used to be published twice a year is now in a new format and is being published quarterly. The next published issue will be coming out August 1st and will include trips until the end of October with a trip submission publi-cation deadline of June 15th. It is always a good idea to have your trip published in this publication as it
reaches the whole club. You may enter your trips online (preferred) or email trip descriptions to the appropriate leader listed. Our goal as a club is to try and double the number of trips this year so I am asking everyone to please consider entering in more trips, even if it is just one more than you normally would. One tip is to try and submit trips you would love to do anyways. We truly appreci-ate and are so thankful for all trips! Remember that you can enter a trip any time online by logging on to www.cmc.org and clicking on the “Leader” link in the upper right-hand corner of the page. Trips will be reviewed for approval very quickly and will also be highlighted in the Compass and GPS if possible. Trips Schedulers are:

In Memory of Walter Jessel
Walter Jessel was a member of the CMC Boulder Group for many years. He died this year in April at age 95. He served on The Boulder Group Council as Publicity Chair from 1971 through 1974 and lead the cre-ation of the first full scale Boul-der Mountain Parks topograph-ic map. During that time period, Walter was a strong voice in defining our conservation policy. He served as Chair of the State Conservation Committee and went on to be President of the CMC in 1976. John Devitt, the CMC President before Walter, recalls him as the most impressive single mem-
ber of the club during that period. Walter had a great enthusiasm for the Colorado
Mountains even in the pouring rain as Don Kava remem-bers a 10 day back-pack trip in the San Juans. He enjoyed back country skiing and had many fun loving times acting as photographer at the finish line of the social Brainard Lake ski races. Wal-ter was extremely active with several Colorado environ-mental groups helping particularly with the “then new” computer technol-ogy. We are grateful for the energy he
had in establishing our conservation awareness. In 1990 Walter was recog-nized with the prestigious Daily Camera Pacesetter award in the Environmental Category.
