GO FOXES!!!

President’s MessageBy Tia Purdy ‘82

Fall has begun to bring rains and cool temperatures. The kids have returned to school. As I reflect on the past few months I am amazed at all of the things that have hap-pened. We can look at all the fires in Oregon and be relieved that they are nearly out. The rain has again started to bring back the green in our lawns. But mostly it is a time to reflect and slow down, with all of the summer hustle and bustle finished.

I was sitting at the recent Home-coming game watching a group of kids play and enjoy their com-panionship of friends. I started to reflect on what homecoming means. The familiar faces and new faces intermingle with the sounds of the referee whistle and cheers from the crowd. These sounds take me back to when I was young and in high school attending activities. The games on the football field are played basically the same, and are comforting in their familiarity. Being able to recall familiar sounds of the fight song being played by the band make me smile and relax. What a great community in which to have grown up. I was raised on a farm in Monitor, and attended Monitor Grade School. I was in a class of 28 students. When we left the small class and went to Silver-ton High School, I never imagined that I would find my way. But I did. I gained new friends who are as diverse in their background as am I. The feeling of being lost was

quickly replaced by the feeling of belonging.

Homecoming is that time of year when we all get the opportunity to remember that we belong. The memories and experiences that we have are timeless. The opportunity to keep the relationship with our Silverton High School family is always available.

During the Alumni Dinner we had the opportunity to share the evening with Donna Liechty '41 and to welcome many younger gradu-ates from the class of 2007. The age gap was not as big as it would seem. We are a family and seeing the many age groups reflect that. We are in a sense having our homecom-ing each year at the annual all class reunion dinner.

The classes have begun many fun traditions and attend the dinner with anticipation. We all have the op-portunity to give back to our young graduates as they move forward to college and adulthood. The Alumni is proud to give out scholarships to so many deserving young people. We cannot give out the number of scholarships that we do without the generous support of the alumni of Silverton High School. We are all one family and taking care of those to come is a satisfying and welcome commitment that we have estab-lished.

As we begin this season of homecomings throughout the fall and winter season, remember that it is because of you that we are able to help our fellow graduates embark on their journey.

Snowbirds ... and Ex-SnowbirdsBy Judy Nunn, Editor

Are you still a snowbird? Some of you have reported not receiving your copy of the newsletter. I have a list with different addresses for June and December for several of our alumni.

All were changed from their home address to their "away" or snowbird address for the December Newsletter.

Please!! If you no longer leave your home address during the win-ter, let me know. It would be a good idea to send me your current travel dates so I have an updated list.

As a guideline, the June newslet-ter is sent the third week of May; the December newsletter is mailed the third week in November.

Thanks for your cooperation!

Mailing Label Alert

Please check the expira-tion on your mailing label on this newsletter. If it has an ending date of 2017 or prior, it’s time to renew your dues. If it says “Com-plimentary Copy”, we’d like to invite you to join our Alumni membership. To renew, use the form inside the back cover. No renewal notices are sent out.

WANTED: Yearbooks from

1960's, 70's & 80'sThere are many Alumni that

missed out on the opportunity to purchase a yearbook while in school. There are others who no longer have their yearbooks for various reasons and wish to obtain one. The SHS Alumni Association has a supply of yearbooks for sale, however there are many requests for books that we do not have.

Those requests have been added to a wait list which continues to grow. If you have a yearbook that you no longer want, please consider donating it to the Silverton High School Alumni Association. Dona-tions will be accepted at the alumni office at 303 Oak St., Silverton. We will sell the yearbooks for $10.00 each with the proceeds to be used for scholarships.

Please contact Tracy at [email protected] or 503-873-8441 if you have any questions or wish to be added to a wait list for a year-book.

Fundraiser ResultsBy Tracy Duerst, Treasurer

SHSAA had another successful Fundraiser with dinner catered by the Wooden Nickel and a silent auction on August 4, 2017. At-tendance was great, as the Class of 2007 joined us to hold their 10th year reunion.

The silent auction brought in over $4,556. Cash donations prior to the fundraiser brought in $1,275. There will be expenses (food, advertising, hall rental, etc.) to be paid from those monies.

The 50/50 drawing brought in $434 for SHSAA and the lucky winner was Bob Riches who quickly turned the money back as a donation to the SHSAA. We thank him for his generosity.

Randy Pflaum was the winner (as usual) for the Condo in Sun-

river. He won a 3-night stay at the condo.

The Almquist portrait was won by Kim White.

Remember this is an annual event. So set the calendar in your smart phone for August 3, 2018. Watch the airlines for bargain rates, and come join us next year. If your class is planning a reunion for 2018, encourage them to join us at our event .

Editor’s MessageBy Judy Nunn ‘60

A deadline is necessary in order to have time to process the articles and information to be reported in the newsletter. Even a day late in submitting the text to the publisher can delay the newsletter.

If your class is planning a re-union, please let me know so I can save space for your information. Deadline for the June Newsletter is April 17, 2018. Early notices are quite welcome!

At our Annual Fundraiser we welcomed the class of 2007! They were celebrating their 10-year re-union and are the "youngest" class to attend our Fundraiser.

This is a reminder that attendance is limited to those over 21 years of age. All family and friends, not just classmates, are welcome to attend.

Information of your class re-unions are welcome in this news-letter, at no charge! Please let us help you notify your classmates of upcoming get-togethers and/or reunions.

For a class roster, please send an email to: [email protected].

Senior Awards NightWow!By John Smith ’61

Out of curiosity, my wife Car-men and I decided to attend Senior Awards Night at the high school on June 1st. When we graduated 56 years ago, there were just over 100 graduates who, according to our yearbook, were awarded a total of 16 scholarships. Things change.

This year there were more than 300 graduates who received a total of almost 300 scholarships. About 200 of these scholarships were provided by local organizations. We were proud that 44 of those local scholarships totaling $38,750 came from SHSAA.

A big thank you goes to all of you who have contributed to this cause through your fund raising ef-forts and donations.

In addition to the local scholar-ships, there were very large awards made by universities, and the Chemeketa Scholars Recognition Program with total scholarships of approximately $2,000,000. Wow!

Scholarships Awarded for 2017

There were 81 scholarships in various amounts awarded to the high school graduates and post-graduates, totaling $68,500. Many of the recipients have sent thank you notes to SHSAA. We'd like to acknowledge receiving them from the following recipients:

Ashton Alexander, Rachel Brock-amp, Jocelyn Brown, Jasmine Ce-lio, Leah Doeden, Aiden Edsinga, Lindsey Garlinghouse, Julie Golan, Dustin Gubbels, Jordan Hess, Le-anne Kuenzi, Victoria Martusheff, Megan McElroy, Jacob Metzger, Coleton Myers, Kameryn Myers, Jeslyn Pool, Angie Rueda, Rosie Riley, Joseph Schaefer, Desiree Sinn, Samantha Sinn, Kiara Snook, Alina Stratton, Jacob Stutzman, Chad Treichler, Madi Ulven.

Thank you notes were also received from Sofie Andres, Alex Cross and Chryssi Wagner for their Errol and Eaden Ross Scholarships. Ashley Kuenzi was thankful for her Gladys & Craig Clark Scholarship. Megan Mannion's note thanked the SHSAA for awarding her the Phil Clites Scholarship. She will be studying Civil Engineering at Cal Poly.

Recipients of the Loar Schol-arships Post-graduates Maddie Fuhrman, Daniel Schurter and Nichole Beyer also sent thank you notes.

We'd like to share just a few of the notes we received:

I want to thank you so much for awarding me with a generous scholarship from your organization. I am so honored to be a recipi-ent for this year. It truly means so much to me that you are choosing to invest in my future endeavors. I am beyond excited to be heading to Southern Oregon University in

the fall. I would not be able to do it without your financial help. Your generosity will allow me to focus on my education and not the burden of how I am going to pay for it. I promise to put every penny to great use and be a great representative of the Silverton High School Alumni Association.

Leah Doeden

Thank you very much for this scholarship from the Alumni Asso-ciation! I have loved attending Sil-verton High School these last few years, but really I've loved all my schooling experience in Silverton. I think its wonderful that you help support so many people who are hoping to follow their passions in all different directions. Personally, I hope to become a nurse-midwife. Thank you again for this honor.

Jocelyn Brown

Thank you so very much for awarding me a scholarship. This 2017-2018 school year will be my last at Pacific Lutheran University, after which I will graduate with a degree in both Social Work and His-panic Studies. Your support over the years has helped me get to where I am now.

With enormous gratitude, Shannon Kelley

Thank you so much for your generous scholarship. I am very appreciative of you investing in my education and future. This scholar-ship will help with school expenses.

I am entering my sophomore year at University of Hawaii, where I am studying public health. I am very honored to have received your scholarship. Thank you again for your investment.

Maddie Fuhrman

Thank you so much for your generous contribution to help me complete my undergraduate nurs-ing degree at Linfield College. I am excited to share with the association that I am already serving those in need by working for the VA Port-land Medical Center as a student nurse technician. Because of your contribution to my education, I will be able to complete my degree this year.

Class of 1982 Celebrates 35 yearsBy Patti Miles Tischer

We had a nice time this August celebrating our 35th Reunion. There were eight of us who attended the Alumni Fundraiser at the Mt. Angel Festhalle on Friday, August 4th.

On Saturday night, August 5th we celebrated at the Silverton Elks Lodge with 42 Classmates in atten-dance. We had a great time; many said it was the best reunion they had attended. We were lucky to have several in attendance that had never been to a reunion before. It was so nice to visit with everyone.

Be sure to join our Facebook page Silverton High School Class of 1982. If you do not use Face-book, please be sure to give Patti your email address so we can keep you up to date on future events.

Jack Hande Tribute PoemBy Carol Lewis Rickard

Silverton High Class of 1960It was in 1957 at Silverton High

When Mr. Jack Hande introduced us to pi.The very first day he declared

That the area of a circle is pi times R squared.Pi is that famous constant 3.14

But really there are more numbersIn the decimal after the three

In fact, they go forever, out to infinity.Mr. Hande filled my young mind

With shapes and forms of every kind;A sphere, a triangle, a square, a pentagon

The list just goes on and on.At 15, even though I would tryI couldn't see how in my lifeGeometry would ever apply.

Then time, as usual, did quickly passAnd on our last day of class

I asked Mr. Hande which form is the best.He said remember the circle over all the rest.

Be patient for the older you growYou will understand and come to know

That with each friend we make,With each trip we take,

We expand the area of our circle of life. And yes there will be much joy and sometimes strife.

Mr. Hande also saidThat our circle of life's constant equivalent of pi

Is somehow strangeBecause in the circle of our life

The only constant will be change. So, Jack Hande, I want to thank you

For what you told me is so trueBecause now with grandkids and a beautiful wife

I understand, We are surrounded by our very own circle of life.

Class of '56By Nellie Graves

We have been having a good turnout for our class brunch. Everyone seems to be enjoying visiting and eating. If you haven’t attended you are missing out.

We meet the second Wednesday at the Home Place at 10:30 a.m. We look forward to seeing you there.

Most of the class of 56 will be turning 80 next year (2018). Does anyone have any great ideas of what we can do for our 80th birthday party? If you have any suggestions, let one of your reps know.

Want more information? Nellie can be reached at 503-874-4698 or email [email protected]. Fritz Skirvin may be contacted at [email protected].

An Idea! Here's a suggestion for a unique gift for that hard-

to-buy-for person. Birthdays, anniversary, holidays or just because you like them . . .

An "in honor" donation to the SHSAA Scholar-ship fund might be the perfect gift. See our donation form on page 19.

Class of 2007By Kendra Purdy Coxen - 2007

For our ten year class reunion (class of 2007), we hosted our event at the annual Alumni Scholarship Fundraiser. As the time came to have our reunion with little ideas or knowledge in planning a class reunion, a few of us noticed that the Alumni Association encouraged alumni classes to hold their events in conjunction with the annual Alumni Association fundraising dinner.

It was the perfect solution to host our reunion by having a nicely located venue, catered dinner, and bartended event, all ready to go with little to plan. We used a portion of our class funds to create a basket to donate to the silent auction to support the scholarship fund. Some of our money also went to supple-ment drink costs for our classmates and to purchase flowers and light decor for our tables.

The association was incredibly easy to work with and so helpful in providing ideas. We brought out-door games to play in the lawn and our class stayed and enjoyed the evening until the event wrapped up.

This was a great way to plan a low-stress and neatly organized event, as well as give back to the SHS Scholarship Fund as many of

our classmates were able to benefit from scholarships when we gradu-ated.

I would highly recommend this to any class looking for a convenient way to hold a reunion.

Class Of '62 Plan-ning 56th Reunion

As planned, our 56th Reunion in 2018 will be held on Saturday, August 4th at noon. Mel Ulven will be hosting at his country home in Hubbard. We had the pleasure of celebrating our 45th reunion there in 2007. Watch the June newsletter for more details.

We are looking for changes of address for any class members who have moved. If you know of class members without email addresses, pass the word on to them please. We'll follow up with letters to all next summer.

To attend the SHS Alumni Assoc. Friday night dinner, let Georgie know so a place or places at the Class of '62 table(s ) will be held for you. See dates and application form elsewhere in this newsletter. Reser-vations and cost for the fundraiser will be handled directly through SHSAA. The form is included in this issue.

If you have ideas for this reunion or future reunions, your suggestions are always very welcome.

You may contact Georgie at 503/873-4399, 503/510-0212 (cell, text if you like), or [email protected] (email).

10 Year Reunion for Class of 2008By Ashlie Rios- 2008

As your Class Rep, I'm an-nouncing the plans for our 10-year reunion next summer. I have a Roster from ten years ago, but need updated addresses and emails.

One idea is to have our reunion in conjunction with the SHS Alumni Fundraiser, held at the Mt. Angel Festhalle on August 3, 2018 with an evening out afterwards in Silverton. The cost of this event is $30 per person which includes a delicious dinner. I would like to have a small group of 2008 graduates who can meet once a month before the reunion to brainstorm and organize this event. Interested?

My contact information is [email protected] or you can find me on Facebook. I have created a "Class of 2008 Reunion" Face-book event so that we can connect and brainstorm other options for our 10 year reunion.

I can't wait to see everyone and catch up. Go Foxes!

Calling All Alumni!!By Tracy Duerst

We need volunteers to help continue the mission of the Alumni Association. The Silverton High School Alumni Association awards thousands of $$’s in scholarships each year to help our students fur-ther their education. We need your help to continue to grow our Asso-ciation and increase our scholarship funds.

This is a great way to get involved and make a difference in your hometown, even if you no lon-ger live in Silverton. Most positions only take a few hours per month and can be performed from home if you have internet access. Here is a list of areas in which we need help:

Trustees and OfficersFinance Committee MembersVolunteer RecruiterWebsite maintenanceFacebook managementAssistant Newsletter EditorAlumni Access Database Management & MaintenanceFundraiser helpHomecoming parade and Activities chairHigh School Display Case

If you or classmates you know have the skills to help in these areas, please let us know and we can provide more information on the specific tasks involved. If you are interested in one of these posi-tions, please contact one of our Trustees or Officers.

“Many hands make light work”! Although this list may seem large for our organization, we have thou-sands of SHS Alumni, and many with the skills that would truly benefit our organization.

Please consider volunteering to help us ensure the Alumni Associa-tion continues to grow for future generations!

Attention Classes Planning Reunions

Is YOUR class planning a reunion for 2018? Check the list on page 3 of this newsletter! There is no charge for publishing these articles.

Many classes have a reunion ev-ery five or ten years. We have been working with class reps to update addresses for all alumni.

One of the services the Silverton High School Alumni Association provides is a mailing list for your use. But we need your help in keep-ing it up-to-date. Request your class address listing from the Alumni As-sociation and compare it with yours, and we can help figure out who has the most recent addresses. We can also publish a list of missing class-mates in the newsletter. Some may be listed in this newsletter. If you recognize any in those lists, please contact either the rep listed within the article, or SHSAA (see below).

If you provide us with the current addresses for your class, we in turn send out a newsletter to all your classmates. Paid membership is $5.00 per year, but we send com-plimentary copies to those who are having reunions in the current year. Included in every newsletter is a membership form.

Want to make it easier to hold a reunion? Plan your reunion for the same date as our Alumni Fundraiser and meet with us. SHSAA arranges the venue and sells the tickets. All you have to do is invite your class-mates, and that is also part of this newsletter. Check out the Fundrais-er information on pages 10-11.

Why spend your time looking for just the right restaurant or planning a banquet and having to collect the fees? By holding your reunion as part of our Alumni Fundraiser din-ner, you will see folks from other

classes in addition to your own. SHSAA sells the tickets, and all you have to do is attend and enjoy yourself and your classmates.

Your attendance also helps SHSAA raise money for scholar-ships. As you'll see in the Fund-raiser information pages, we hold a silent auction. Local merchants and businesses donate merchandise and/or gift certificates for our silent auction. Handmade items from SHS Alumni add to the silent auction.

Many classes like to meet with "just their class", so we suggest a picnic at the park or at someone's home the next day. There's not much to plan for that part.

Contact Judy Nunn, 4728 Jade St. NE, Salem, OR 97305-3138. Email address is: [email protected] or you can mail a printed list. Email is encour-aged, faster, easier, and cheaper! Please put “alumni” or “reunion” and your class year in the subject line. The deadline for articles for the June 2018 issue is April 17, 2018.

Class of '65By Jean Gruber Kent

Members of the Class of '65 had a great "birthday party" in August. We connected with some class members we had not seen for a while. The turnout was great.

Classmates and spouses are continuing to meet every month for breakfast. Please note the meet-ing day has changed to Tuesday because the restaurant is closed on Mondays.

Make plans to join us on the third Tuesday of the month, 9 a.m. at 3 Ten Water Street Restaurant in Silverton. For more information, please contact Jean Gruber Kent at 503-873-4887 or [email protected].

Class Challenge - 2018What started out as a simple idea turned into a great scholarship fundraiser. In August, the class of 1959 got the

ball rolling with $59.00 cash donation to the annual silent auction fundraiser. With a posting on the Silverton High School Alumni Association's Facebook page, the '59 class challenged all other classes to meet or beat the dol-lar amount with their class donation. Several classes stepped up and took the challenge: 1955, 1956, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1961, 1963, and 1970. Donations came in various amounts, many different than their class year.

At the annual Alumni and Friends' Fundraiser, the class of 1961 took the honor of not only meeting but beating the '59 challenge with donations of over $2,500.00! This brought our total over $3,400.00.

Now is the time to jump in and see what 2018 will bring! For your convenience, we have provided a form for you to cut out (or copy) and send in your donation. Be sure to indicate your class year. After much discussion at our Annual Meeting, we will name one of the $1,000 Scholarships for the winning class to a graduate annually.

The "Class Reps", as listed in the back of this newsletter, have received detailed information in case you have questions. Please check the listing for the current name, e-mail and/or phone number for your Class Representa-tive.

What? There is no Class Rep listed for your class? You need to step up to the plate and volunteer. Every Class needs a person or two to help keep track of address changes. Contact Judy Nunn for a class roster so you can let all your classmates know about this Class Challenge.

NOTE: Dues, Memorial and other designated donations (named scholarships) will NOT be included in the Challenge calculation. Donations to the Challenge must be specified with the contribution. The form below should be included with your check. Please do not send cash! The SHSAA office will send you a receipt for tax pur-poses.

You can read more about our annual fundraiser on pages 19-20 in this newsletter.

Attention Class RepsBy Judy Nunn, Editor

In reviewing the list of Class Reps in the newsletter, I discov-ered there are several without an email address listed. I’d like to add YOURS if it's not printed.

Please take a look at your information. Is the mailing address cor-rect? How about the email address? Many people change their emails often, so please take a look and make sure the correct one is printed. Phone numbers are also helpful for your classmates to keep in contact with you.
