Volume XXI, No. 1 www.lclibs.org/myerstown Spring / Summer 2017 Words from the President of the Board of Trustees MCL he state of the Myerstown Community Library is healthy. This health is supported by our valued community residents who support our community library financially. Our dedicated volunteers put in hours of work and our friends of the MCL are always there in a time of need. It’s almost a year now since we lost our biggest supporter, our past president, Gail Shiner. I continue with the help of our tireless Board of Trustees to complete her vision of MCL’s future. This year, as always, we have many projects. We have just finished up our Spring Magic Auction fundraiser and will follow by preparing for our Fall Book Sale. Besides those two big yearly projects we have many smaller projects both internally and externally. Last fall, we completed the landscaping project at the entrance and side of the library spearheaded by our past president. We also installed a security monitor system that provides us the necessary 24/7 coverage to maintain a safe and secure facility in protecting the assets of the library. Most recently, we replaced our ten year old copier. Beyond some of the obvious physical projects, we have updated some sections of our by- laws and adjusted some our investments to make them stronger and sounder for the health of the library. This spring, we will resurface and reline the old section of the parking lot. This will create a two or three day inconvenience to our patrons. A project for the future that will require some financial commitment will be the installation of a new exterior LED library sign with the ability to advertise hours, programs currently and coming to library as well as necessary community news. This is just one of many projects, small and large, that the Board of Trustees tirelessly works at to continue to improve the services offered by the library to our community residents. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I thank you all for your continued support to the MCL and our endeavors to continue to make MCL the best library in Lebanon County. Things heat up at the Myerstown Community Library in summer – both actually and metaphorically. The Summer Reading Program and Summer Story times are the “main events” for the months of June and July. This year our summer theme for all the reading programs is “Build a Better World”. Since one of the main thrusts of the summer programs for children is the desire to keep them reading so they don’t slide into the Summer Slump – the tendency for students to lose some of the achievement gains they have made during the previous school year. I urge all parents to have some form of a summer reading schedule for their children, whatever their age. (An excellent way of doing this is to lead by example –

let them see you read as well.) We welcome children from pre-readers through adults in one of our three programs. And, while the Wednesday evening programs and the prizes are fun…Reading is the name of the game! 1000 Books Before Kindergarten has proven to be a winner as well. For more information on this nationally recognized program, please stop in or give us a call at the library (717-866-2800). We have several children who have already made their 1000 book goal. Look for their faces on our Facebook page! For the older group – please join our book discussion group in August. We will be reading Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels…including all the parts that were not in your children’s abridged version! Finally, we have purchased a new copier to replace our 10 year old Sharp. The new one also does color copying ($.40/page). We expect that new computers will be next on the purchasing queue. These purchases are possible due to the generosity of the Giving Tree donors.

Thank You To our VolunTeers!Every year the Myerstown Community Library thanks their volunteers by treating them to an Appreciation Breakfast – usually during National Volunteer Week. Myerstown, like many small public libraries, relies on their cadre of volunteers for many purposes – shelving books, reading shelves, repairs and assemblies, assisting in fund raisers…and more. We would certainly be stretched if our staff were to do all this. When you see the following, please thank them for all their services to the library and their community –our Story Lady Karen Sandoe, Susan Matalenas, William Seifert, Dan Blydenburgh, Nancy Stechman Swanger, Machelle Bucher, Diana Price, Matthew Walsh, Doris Bergman, Nancy Atkins, Carol Mehler, Wanda Rabold, Betsy Brennan, Terry Miller, Renee Miller, Lisa Smith, and our intrepid volunteer coordinator Lori Swanger.

Volunteers – we salute you!

If you have LEGOS that need a new home, the library could certainly use them – as well as paper tubes, clips, pvc piping, elbows flexible tubing, clip clothes pins, funnels, wire, shoe boxes, and any other “building” supplies you can think of! Drop them off at the library so we can have enough material for our “construction crew”.

Unleashed your creative juices and help to "Build a Better World" at the Myerstown Community Library during our Summer Reading Program. We are planning a busy schedule for you to build, discover, live, sense, and transform your summer. Shows have already been scheduled with Kit’s Interactive Theatre and Miss Maggie Sings. We will also welcome back the Naturalists from Lancaster Parks and Recreation – and their programs on spiders (yeah!), pollinators, and a Dr. Seuss favorite, the Lorax. There will be some special projects based on STEM

and STEAM programs – including an introduction to Rube Goldberg. Participants will receive tickets for every 60 minutes of reading time that they log. These tickets can then be redeemed for prizes and books. The Summer Reading Program sign-ups will begin on June 5 and the program will finish on July 29. It is open to children from pre-reader through sixth grade. We will also have programs for teens and adults that will start in mid-June and run through mid-August with a chance to take home books and a special prize.

ON THE CALENDAR…It may seem to be too early to announce these activities, but the summer is a busy time and we want you to keep them in mind. • SEPTEMBER 9, 2017 – 7:30 AM to 3:00 PMThe Annual Book & Bake Sale!at Frieden’s Lutheran church pavilion. We are already collecting books for the sale – including a bumper load

of cookbooks! We welcome your contribution of clean, current materials for both adults and children.

*PLEASE – No textbooks, encyclopedias, magazines,

or materials too old or damaged to be useful to anyone.

The Friday pre-sale was a success last year, so we will repeat it again in 2017. The Pre-Sale admission fee will be $5.00/person from 6:00 to 8:00 pm – plus the price of the materials. This is the best way to get first crack at our selection. Of course, there will also be bake goods on Saturday and some of our famous miscellaneous items!

• AUGUST 15 @ 7:00 PMSail with Us and Gulliver’s TravelsMany of us may have first met Lemuel Gulliver in Classic Illustrated Comics or an abridged version and remember Gulliver and his adventures with the diminutive inhabitants of Lilliput. But are we acquainted with the other adventures he has including a visit to the Houyhnhnms? Jonathan Swift’s biting satire on human nature and “traveller’s tales” is his best-known work and is considered a classic of British literature. Whether you are re-acquainting yourself or meeting Gulliver for the first time, You are invited to join us in discussing this timeless novel on Tuesday, August 15th, at 7:00 pm. We especially invite the sophomores of ELCO who chose Gulliver’s Travels for their summer reading selection.

Become a Summer SponsorAs in the past years, we depend upon the support of the public for a portion of our Summer Reading Program expenses. With the "purchase" of outside programming, the materials needed for those children who register for the SRP, prizes, and arts and crafts materials, the cost of the summer programs is usually $2000. Please consider becoming a Summer Sponsor... the children will be glad you did! Please complete the form below and submit to the Myerstown Community Library.
