The Texas A&M-Kingsville men’s basketball team will close out its pre-holiday schedule Saturday and Tuesday with non- conference games in the Steinke Center. The Javelinas host St. Edward’s at 4 p.m. Saturday, and they will be trying to reverse their only loss of the season. St. Edward’s downed the Javelinas, 89-72, earlier in Austin and that’s the only blemish on the Javelinas’ 9-1 season’s record. The Javelinas are 2-0 in the Lone Star Conference standings. The squad will host St. Mary’s at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday as a part of a doubleheader that will see the Javelina women hosting Midwestern State at 5:15 p.m. Trey Sumpter, 6-6 junior guard/forward from Birmingham, Ala., leads the Javelinas in scoring (12.1) and rebounding (4.9). Jacolby Harris, 6-2 junior guard from Delray, Fla., is averaging 9.9 points an outing. Concordia-St. Paul Wins DII Volleyball TitleConcordia-St. Paul (Minn.)

won its ninth NCAA Division IInational volleyball championshipin the past 11 years when itdowned Florida Southern,3-0, in Pensacola, Fla., lastweekend.

The Golden Bears closed theseason with a 34-3 record.

CSP has a 67-6 record inNCAA tournament play after lastweek’s sweep.

Elizabeth Mohr of the Bearswas named the outstanding playerin the tournament. She had 43assists and 10 digs in the titlematch.

The Golden Bears have won29 matches in 31 outings in the

final three rounds of thetournament, including 27 in a row.

Florida Southern ended theseason with a 30-7 record.

TEXAS A&M-COMMERCE plays for the NCAA Division IIfootball championship this weekend when it takes on West Floridain Kansas City, Kan.

The Lions become first Lone Star Conference team to reach thefinals since the Javelinas played for the 1994 championship.

And TAMUC is only the third LSC school to reach the finals.In addition to the Javelinas, Southwest Texas was in the

championship game in 1981 and 1982.Commerce and West Florida are surprises in the playoffs. The

Lions were seeded No. 5 in the region at the start of the playoffsand West Florida was seeded No. 6 in its region.

When the re-seeding took place heading into the semifinals,Commerce was No. 2 and West Florida No. 4.

The Lions beat Harding (Ark.), a former member of the LSC, inthe national semifinals last weekend. Harding lost its first threegames this season and then won 11 in a row before losing inCommerce.

THERE WILL BE no action by any athletic teams in NCAADivision II between Dec. 20-26.

The division’s Life in the Balance program requires the breakfor all its programs.

Life in the Balance seeks to give the Division II athletes abalance between athletics and other activities.

THE NCAA DIVISION II All-America football team chosen bythe American Football Coaches Association was released last weekalong with some interesting facts about the squad.

The Javelinas have long been a leader in producing All-Americans on the team, selected by the AFCA.

Here are some notes on the team:…The Javelinas have been represented 34 times by 30 players

to lead all schools.Second behind the Javelinas is Texas A&M-Commerce with 22

positions by 19 players.The other top teams represented are Northwest Missouri (21/

16), North Alabama (20/19), Pittsburg (Kan.) State (20/16), Indiana(Pa.) 19/17), Ferris (Mich.) State (19/15), Carson-Newman (Tenn.)(16/15) and Grand Valley (Mich.) State (16/15).

Other Lone Star Conference schools among the leaders areAngelo State (12/11), Eastern New Mexico (11/9) and West TexasA&M (10/10).

…The Javelinas had at least one player named to the All-America team for 18 consecutive seasons from 1986-2003, thelongest streak by any team in Division II.

Northwest Missouri is second, having had 16 straight selectionsfrom 1996-2011. Pittsburg State had nine consecutive selections.

Texas A&M-Commerce has the longest active streak with fivestraight selections from 2013 to this year.

…Texas A&I’s running back Johnny Bailey is the only player toearn AFCA All-America honors for four consecutive years at anylevel. Bailey was on the first unit in 1986-89.

…The AFCA’s Division II All-America Selection Committee ismade up of three head coaches from each of the AFCA’s sevendistricts.

The coaches in each district are responsible for ranking the topplayers in their representative districts prior to a conference callbetween the district chairmen and the committee chairmen. Thelatter group makes the team selection.

…Eastern New Mexico running back Damal Cass, Texas A&M-Commerce offensive lineman Jared Machorro, Slippery Rock (Pa.)defensive lineman Marcus Martin, Ferris State defensive linemanZach Sieler, Tuskegee (Ala.) linebacker Osband Thompson andDelta (Miss.) State running back Chris Robinson are the playerswho earned All-America honors for the second consecutive seasonin 2017.

…Texas A&M-Commerce’s Machorro, quarterback Luis Perezand defensive back Yusef Sterling/Lowe became the first school tohave more than two players named to the AFCA Division II All-America team in one year when they were honored on the first andsecond teams this season.

WITH BASKETBALL NOW underway, it was time to havemy roundball-season visits with Pete Ranucci.

He has been a Lone Star Conference basketball official foryears and we’ve visited during his many trips to Kingsville toreferee Javelina games.

We were saddened to learn last week that Pete, 74, passedaway during the off-season.

He died in San Antonio in April.From Worcester, Mass., he played basketball at Trinity where

he was All-Southland Conference and set several league records.He has been a college basketball official for more than 40 years,

calling in the Southwest Conference, Big 12, Southland Conference,Conference USA, Sun Belt, Western Athletic Conference and theLSC.

Pete officiated 20 NCAA Division II regional tournaments, twoNCAA Division II national tournaments and five NAIA nationaltournaments.

Most officials keep their distance from the fans, especiallythose who are critical of his or her calls. But not Pete. He wasknown for visiting with the fans before games and during timeouts.

He’ll be missed this season by not only the Javelina fans, but allof those he became friends with during his LSC career.

FORMER JAVELINA HEAD men’s basketball coach BillCarter will be inducted into the Thomas Jefferson High SchoolAthletic Hall of Fame next week in Joplin, Mo.

Carter is being inducted in the inaugural class.He was athletic director at the school for eight years and was

girls head basketball coach for 10 seasons. He also coached golffor five years.

LONE STAR CONFERENCE notes:…The Angelo State athletic department hosted a blood drive last

week on campus.All who donated received free admission to a men’s and

women’s basketball doubleheader with Midwestern State the nightof the drive.

…The Texas A&M-Commerce men’s and women’s basketballteams had to change the start times of their games Saturday inCommerce because of the NCAA Division II semifinal football gameon campus.

The women’s game was moved to 11 a.m., the men’s game at1 p.m. and the football kickoff was at 2:30 p.m.

…Bill Maskill was named the NCAA Division II region coach ofthe year last week and now becomes a nominee, along with thethree other regional recipients, for the national coach of the yearhonor.

The other regional coaches of the year are Mark Maciejewskiof Shippensburg (Pa.), Pete Shinnick of West Florida, Lee Owensof Ashland (Ohio) and Tom Sawyer of Winona (Minn.) State.

The national winner will be announced at the American FootballCoaches Association banquet Jan. 9 in Charlotte, N.C.

…Owen Hind of West Texas A&M and Esmeralda Fuentes ofTarleton State were named the 2017 Lone Star Conference CrossCountry Runners of the Year last week.

The league’s head coaches made the selections.Hind finished 40th in the NCAA Division II national meet

and he was 32nd at the regional meet. He was medalist at theLSC Championships in Kingsville, helping his team win the teamtitle.

Fuentes was 21st at the regional meet and was second at theLSC Championships. TSU won the conference team trophy.

…Two LSC players were ranked among the top NCAA DivisionII women’s tennis singles players in a poll released by theIntercollegiate Tennis Association last week.

Daria Panforeva of Midwestern State was No. 20 and ZheniaShviadok of Cameron was No. 34.

Two of the league’s doubles teams were also ranked.Biance Duff and Maddy Coffman of Midwestern State were

No. 5 and Sarah Frendo and Mathlide Thibadaut of Cameron wereNo. 23.

…Western New Mexico athletic director Mark Coleman hasresigned, effective at the end of this month.

He has been in the position for six years and in the first twoyears also served as the Mustang men’s head basketball coach. Hewas the basketball coach for 10 years.

During his time at athletic director, the program made thetransition from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference to the LoneStar Conference.

The Texas A&M-Kingsvillemen’s basketball team was rankedNo. 23 in the NCAA Division IIpoll released by the NationalAssociation of BasketballCoaches last week.

Three Lone Star Conferenceteams were ranked in the top 25.

West Texas A&M was No. 8,Texas-Permian Basin was No. 13and the Javelinas No. 23.

Athletes who won national or conference championships in the 2016-17 sports seasons received rings at a reception last week in the StudentUnion Building. Kaina Martinez and Javier Lopez were the Gil E. Steinke Awardrecipients and were presented their plaques last week at a reception inthe Memorial Student Union Building ballroom. The awards go to themale and female athletes of the year, and Martinez and Lopez were thehonorees for 2016-17.

The season opens at theTexas A&M InternationalTournament in Laredo and theJavelinas will face CentralOklahoma and host TAMIU in fivegames.

The Javelina men and womeneach had only one game.

Wilson, 6-1 senior forwardfrom San Diego, Calif., had 11points, 12 rebounds, a blockedshot and a steal in the women’sgame with Cameron.

Sumpter, 6-6 junior guard/forward from Birmingham, Ala.,had 13 points and 10 rebounds inthe men’s victory over Cameron.

It is the third time Wilson hasbeen recognized as the athlete ofthe week and Sumpter is honoredfor the fourth time this season.

The Texas A&M-Kingsville men’s and women’s indoor track and fieldteam will again be the only non-NCAA Division I team participating in theTed Nelson Invitational Meet Jan. 12 in College Station.

The Javelinas will compete with 13 NCAA Division I squads in theone-day event.

The meet will get underway at noon with the first of the field eventfinals and the running event preliminaries.

The running event finals start at 1:30 p.m.Joining the Javelinas in the competition will be Houston Baptist,

Incarnate Word, Lamar, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana-Monroe,Louisiana Tech, North Texas, Northwestern Louisiana, Prairie ViewA&M, Sam Houston State, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas Southernand Texas-Rio Grande Valley.

This will be the fourth season the Javelinas have been entered inthe meet.

It will be the season opener for the Javelinas, who were to havecompeted in a Dallas meet Dec. 2 but it was cancelled.

The Javelina men are ranked No. 9 nationally in the NCAA DivisionII preseason poll and the Javelina women are ranked No. 27.
